What is going to happen to all the great architecture of the world? When a building or structure gets made it will serve its purpose until it is destroy. What if it doesn’t get destroyed? What if it has lost it’s purpose? If the architecture is well loved there is a chance it was be preserved as a monument for future generations to enjoy. However sometimes the architecture can be forgot and them it slowly fades away as a relic of the past. These two scenarios and extremes of either situation. What I intend to explore during my Brown Fellowship Program is when architecture is in between being recognized as monumental architecture and being lost as a relic. The trip is split into three legs each one in a different country (England, Wales, Scotland). After each leg there will be a period of introspection in larger cities (London, Manchester, Edinburgh). This period is meant to explore these larger cities and try to envision local architecture as it becomes a relic or a monument. The bulk of my journey will be visiting castles around the United Kingdom. I will explore the local context of each castle. How to the people in each city use the old castle? How often do people visit them? All castles will be analysed architecturally as it is and as it once was (If records can indicate the status of each castle in their former glory). When picking which castle to visit I considered many factors (popularity, city size, as a building, level of ruin, nearby) and I did my best to pick a variety across the united kingdom. As of now the itinerary is quite ambitious and I will look into optimizing the trip more if chosen. Why Castles? The School of Architecture does a great job teaching about the history of architecture. However, I have never heard any faculty talk about Medieval Castles as architecture. Medieval Castles were born into the world out of a necessity for safety; in a time and place when there was none. As the years went on castles became part fortress/residence/statehouse. Each one is vastly different playing up local site integration (moats, cliffs, river, etc) for defensive purposes. All Castles use local materials and were built local master builders. Castles today are all in a variety of conditions. Some castles are celebrated with reconstruction, tours, gift shops. While others have gone by the wayside to be forgot. While exploring what the future holds for magnificent architecture, castles are the perfect topology to gain perspective.

Monument Relic Presentation ~ 1 hour This will be mainly be about my thesis of what architecture can become as either Monument or Relic. The presentation will relate my findings to a more global context. It will be a series of images of my trip and photoshop collages of modern day architecture in ruin. Contrasting this will be a series of the ruined castles restored in modern day collages . Book I will put together a comprehensive booklet detaining each castle. Castle details will include (but are not limited to): plans, sections, sketches, photos, brief history. Presentation will be included and a collective essay on my final thoughts
