A Toss to Prosperity Yee Sang or Yu Sheng in Mandarin, is a raw fish salad consisting of over 20 ingredients, each one signifying blessings of abundance, success and prosperity. Some of the ingredients are: pomelo, to add luck; pepper, for attracting more money; carrots, for blessings of good luck; green radish, to symbolize eternal youth; daikon (white radish), symbolizing prosperous business; peanut crumbs, to mean a household filled with gold and silver; sesame seeds, for a flourishing business; and plum sauce, for a sweet life.
An Emperor’s Feast Makati Shangri-La proudly presents a new signature dish to welcome the Chinese New Year: Poon Choi This casserole dish is steeped in history, said to be invented the late Song Dynasty in the 13th century. A young Emperor fled the capital after the Mongol invasion, and settled in Guangdong Province. The locals, in deference to the sovereign, gathered the best food that they could find, and cooked them altogether in claypots to serve the Emperor and his generals. Thus, poon choi was born and became a distinctive dish suitable for large gatherings. It consists of abalone, pork, beef, lamb, chicken, duck, ginseng, fish maw, prawn, crab, squid, fish balls, shrimp, dried eel, dried mushroom, bean curd and radish. Made from glutinous rice flour and sugar, the sticky sweet confection symbolizes family unity, and is a popular gift for family, friends and business partners.
