The Fascinating World of Make-Up Artistry Make-up Designory (MUD) is dedicated to providing education in the craft of make-up artistry, as well as in related fields that are specific to the needs of both the novice and the experienced artist. In addition to MUD Studios, Make-up Designory operates two locations: the main campus in Los Angeles, and the second branch campus in New York City. MUD facilities represent the latest efforts to bring quality education and products to the make-up artist community. All courses and programs in our curriculum are taught by experienced and trained professional artisans and instructors. These intensive programs provide upto six months, and provide students with practical, realworld skills in an academic format designed to maximize the learning process. Each year, our schools train hundreds of students from around the world in a variety of make-up specialties. Whether a students chooses the intricacies of prosthetics or the delicacy of beauty make-up, Make-up Designory can prepare the student to begin a journey as a make-up artist.

Los Angeles

Located in the heart of the entertainment capital, MUD Los Angeles campus offers more than amazing weather. At our most recent Open House in June, graduate Emily Peck took 1st place in the David De Leon MUD Makeup Competition, granting her a 1-on-1 lunch with the Emmy Award winner. Emily was successful in selecting a beauty makeup image from De Leonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s professional website and re-created an awesome inspired look! Mr. De Leon is a popular guest artist and speaker at makeup schools, conventions, and seminars worldwide. Also, say good-bye to traditional classroom whiteboards, the LA campus upgraded and updated all classrooms with digital Sharp AQUOS Boards â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which are being received positively by students and faculty. Melissa 'Missy Munster' Stell is featured on Season 9 of the SyFy show Face Off, a competition/elimination series where special effects make-up artists participate in elaborate challenges for a grand prize and the honor of being Hollywood's next great effects artist. In addition, NY graduate Brittany Leslie has been getting some Special Effects refreshers here at the LA campus to compete in Season 10. Graduate Maddie Hill and her team were nominated for Best Hair and Makeup for her work on a short film project, Birdie's Song, at the 168 Film Festival.

Features of Make-up Designory LA & NY

The NYC Campus has been in their new location in downtown Manhattan for almost a year now. With extra classrooms the school has been able to make classes more available and hold Saturday workshops through the MUD Studio. Over the past year MUD NY has seen a number of graduates compete at IMATS, as well as, on the Syfy show Face Off. Career Services has brought in some great speakers from different parts of the industry, some notables were Michael Key, Michael Develis, James Vincent and NZINGHA.

These weekly lectures, by some of the industry's most prominent leaders, cover a wide variety of career-related topics, and provide a forum for artists to exchange ideas.

From its humble beginnings, Make-up Designory has grown to become the largest educational system exclusively focused on make-up artist training. A strict adherence to educational standards, curriculum development and teacher training have helped to create a standard form of make-up education that can be found in classrooms around the world. The same curriculum, high standards and MUDcertified teachers can be found in MUD’s main campuses in New York and Los Angeles, through their network of partner schools operating in the Unites States or internationally in MUD Studios. MUD Studio provides a perfect mix between classroom and retail. Each MUD Studio is locally based and managed and features a modern showroom where the right MUD product can be found for every occasion and customer type. With every product in MUD Studio comes the knowledge of a MUD Make-up Artist. Dedication to a knowledge based product line is essential to the MUD Studio experience. According to Tate Holland, MUD CEO, “we don’t want to do just makeovers in our stores, we want each make-up application to become an individual make-up class.” Beyond individual tutoring sessions, the store also hosts a number of smaller workshops that are geared to the needs of the everyday woman and make-up enthusiast alike. The education does not stop in the store. It travels to the classroom where aspiring make-up artists are taught the fundamentals of make-up application and the theory necessary to adapt make-up techniques to differing conditions - from the retail floor to a film set to a brides special day. Courses are derived from the same curriculum that can be found at Make-up Designory’s main campuses, but are divided in such a way as to allow the student to progress through the various subjects at their own pace. The courses are divided into two levels: Level I is comprised of Beauty Essentials and the completion of this course allows the student to move on to the classes that comprise Level II, which include classes in Airbrush Make-up, Studio Make-up, High Fashion Make-up Trends, and Bridal Make-up. One of the unique features of the program is that students are able to not only choose courses that they feel will benefit them, but to take courses at different Studios in varying cities. While the courses remain the same at each MUD Studio, Partner School or Main Campus, traveling to different MUD locations allows the student to add culture and life experiences to their make-up education and artistic expression.

Make-up Designory has courses and groups of courses to meet the needs of licensed professionals. For this reason, al l classes require Beauty Essentials as a prerequisite. Al l classes are also offered as continuing education for beauty professionals. These courses have been developed to build upon one another, so that students wil l benefit from the combined materials and the progressive nature of the curriculum. MUD has created groups of classes to il lustrate possible combinations. These groups are designed to provide comprehensive training in various aspects of make-up artistry. P lease note that some classes may not be available at al l locations. A Certificate and Card are awarded for successful completion of any course or group of courses.

Today's beauty professionals need to know more than hair and skincare, they must be competent in al l aspects of their craft. For this reason, Make-up Designory has created a group of classes in make-up artistry to help students of cosmetology and esthetics and licensed professionals meet the ful needs of their clientele. The courses are held convenient ly at MUD's main campuses, Partner Schools, and international ly at MUD Studios. MUD Studio courses are based on the same great educational methodology and teacher training that has helped to make Make-up Designory a bedrock in make-up education. The courses are pul led from the same curriculum that comprises the longer programs at MUD's main campuses in Los Angeles and New York, but are broken up into smal ler modules. These modules can be taken separately or combined, al lowing the student to transfer their education to one of MUD's main campuses.

Learn the techniques employed by professional make-up artists working on advertising and editorial. Vanja Djuran 1. You just got back from a photo shoot in Vienna, how has the rest of this year been for you?

3. What type of feedback do you usually receive for your work as an instructor and as a make-up artist?

There have been so many things happening at once for MUD, like opening new MUD Studios, developing new products, MUD Art Magazine photo shoots and teaching… like I always say, “this year has been great!” If I keep repeating that sentence every year, then the sky is the limit.

I am really trying hard to remember some negative feedback or comments in order to not sound pretentious, but I cannot remember one. I think once you realize that you are learning every day, you simply enjoy and love what you do, only good things get back to you.

2. What is a greater challenge, teaching future make-up artists or training make-up artists to become teachers?

4. What are your thoughts on creativity in a commercial world?

Teaching IS a big challenge, and god knows I love it! When it comes to students, I teach them how to do make-up. With teachers it is a little bit different, I teach them how to teach make-up. The most important thing is to care about your students' success and to make sure that your students are learning. Actually for me, to answer your question, there is no difference between the two.

Thinking as an artist doesn’t have anything to do with commercial theoretically, because being an artist is expressing your inner emotion, your inner-self and personal point of view. Technically artistic presentations have a great visual impact on people which is exactly what an artist wants to achieve. Basically, the question answers itself - finding the balance between creativity and living in a commercial world is the key to success.

5. What is the creative process you follow when developing a new makeup collection or look? Whenever I am inspired I immediately start drawing on a face chart because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to let the idea disappear. Then I always have a stock of looks to choose from. Research is a never ending process for a make-up artist, you always need to be on track with new collections and trends. I am always questioning who is designing the trends and if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s necessary to fully follow them. I prefer to add a lot of my personal touches and transform the trend into my own unique creation.

6. If you had to pick one, which would it be: doing make-up for fashion week, photo shoots, movies or theater? Hmmâ&#x20AC;ŚI think I feel the same as if someone would ask a parent to pick a favorite child. (Laughing)

Fashion weeks are so dynamic, there is so much preparation and creative teamwork. Photo shoots in studios are completely different, they can be very intimate and quiet, but sometimes you travel to a certain location just to get one great photo, freezing a moment in time. Movies are probably the most complex, sometimes taking over a year to com-

plete production. Theater has a certain romantic feel to it and was one of the first fields where make-up artistry became a profession. It is impossible for me to choose one, but I can admit that my strongest one is creating new looks and working on photo shoots.

7. What music do you play while you are working? Besides being a make-up artist, music is probably one of the most important elements of my life. It really depends on a situation, sometimes there is already music playing and there is not much to choose from. If I am the one choosing the music I always adapt it to the mood of the make-up, similar to how a soundtrack is chosen for a movie. I never get enough of Shirley Bassey, Chet Baker, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Massive Attack and Air.

8. Do you have any friends or family that helped lead you to become an artist? My grandfather was a painter, but unfortunately, I never got the chance to meet him so I must have inherited (or stolen) some of his genes. I also always enjoyed watching my mother do her make-up, so I need to thank her because I was never really interested in make-up or any other girly thing at the time. She did my make-up for my prom and nobody recognized me; I instantly felt the magic of make-up, which was probably my breakthrough moment.

9. Who inspires you the most in life? It will probably sound cliché, but my life is my inspiration, along with my friends and the people I work with. You don’t search for creativity, you simply live it!

10. What makes you really happy? There are a lot of things that bring joy and happiness to my life, but it comes down to, simply waking up in the morning knowing that there is a whole new day full of surprises waiting for me!

11. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

My life, as a make-up artist, is full of constant changes. Meeting new people on a daily basis, changing work locations, traveling and diving into new cultures is what I love and why I chose to do this in the first place. I’m always creating, teaching and learning, so I hope in 5 years it will be the same…same, but different.

Used for centuries to create definition and to draw attention to the eyes, eyeliner comes in different types and styles. While some applications are used for correction, others are purely for fun and fashion. The possibilities are endless: Precise sharp lines are great for dramatic looks and soft smudges offer a more subtle approach. You can also control the thickness of the line with the amount of pressure you apply and with your choice of brush. (A light touch will allow for a thinner line than you get with a heavy hand.) For well defined, sharp lines you may choose to use a cake liner, gel, liquid or even a wet application of eye shadow. For a softer look, choose a pencil or a dry eye shadow and blend. You can also layer more than one product to add depth. Once you master our four basic Eye Liner applications, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extremely easy to customize your own.

Seventies

Straight Liner

A straight liner is used to define the top lash line and follows the natural curve of the eye. The straight line does not have any corrective elements, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primarily used for definition. It is also a great base for most eye liner positions.

1. For a well-defined straight liner, use the Cake Liner in Black or Brown with Brush #100. 2. Wet the brush and twirl it into the cake liner until it comes to a point and you have a perfect slurry of color. (Too wet and it may look like a wash, too dry and it may skip.) Test on the back of your hand to ensure you have the right consistency. 3. Do not stretch the eye from the outer edge - it will distort the eyeliner and may cause added wrinkles later on. If necessary, tug upward from the eyebrow to really get into the lash line. To gain better control, lightly lay the brush flat against the lashes on the top lash line with the tip pointing toward the tear duct. 4. Drag the brush to the center of the eye.

Natural Liner

This liner position is used to add an optical lift toward the outer edge and to define the eye. The natural liner is thinner in the inner corner and as it follows the curve of the eye, it thickens and ends with a wedge at the outer corner.

1. Use the same method for a well-defined straight liner for the base of the natural liner application. 2. Next, lightly place the tip of the brush toward the highest point of the wedge (To create the lift at the outer edge, use the edge of your lower water line to gauge where your wedge should be placed.) It is very important not to exceed the outer edge especially when you are trying to lift the eye. 3. Lay the brush flat with the tip touching the highest point of the wedge and follow the curve of the eye toward the center. You may have to repeat this step to build the thickness.

5. Flip the brush and lay the brush flat against the lashes with the tip facing the outer corner and drag the brush toward the center so the lines meet in the middle.

Fashion Liner

The Fashion Liner creates the illusion of close-set eyes appearing farther apart. In this corrective position, the lower liner meets the upper liner at the outer corner of the eye to create a lift at the outer edge.

1. Begin with a straight or natural liner with any of the products mentioned above and envision a horizontal line that runs through the eye. Place a dot at the outer corner of the eye just above the horizontal line. 2. Place your choice of tool and product on the dot and follow the lower lash line. Taper the lower liner as you move toward the tear duct. 3. Next, connect the lower liner with the top liner. Place the tool and product on the dot and follow the upper lash line. This line should also taper as it nears the

Glamour Liner

This corrective eyeliner position is ideal for wide-set eyes. It creates the illusion of the eyes closer together, with a lift at the outer edge. Although this eyeliner position is very popular, it is not recommended for a person with hooded lids as the fold will most likely distort the shape of the wing.

1. Create your slurry of color with the Black or Brown Cake Liner and Brush #100. 2. Look straight into the mirror and notice if/where the fold of the crease falls on the lid. If it does, be sure to keep the wing below the fold. 3. Point the tip of the brush toward the highest point of the wing at a 45 degree angle and drag the brush down to the outer corner of the lash line to create an extended incline line. Repeat on the other eye for balance. 4. Next, lay the brush down with the point at the tear duct and drag the brush to the center of the eye. Then turn the brush in the opposite direction. Graduate Spotlight Danielle Lyn Saunders

Written By: Scott Essman After graduating from MUD in 2002, make-up artist Danielle Lyn Saunders worked on an array of low-budget horror films and “any job she could get her hands on” where she created numerous character make-ups. After 18 months of paying her dues, Danielle joined Local 706 where she did make-up on game shows before getting her first episodic television show, Touch, a major accomplishment in her life and career. After marriage and family beckoned, Danielle returned to TV, department heading sitcoms including Dads in 2013 and Cristela in 2014 after which she joined Disney in 2015. With regards to her first job after graduating from MUD, Only in Hollywood, Danielle realized that she had to stand out from the pack. Though a throng of make-up artists were vying for the position of doing make-up on the show, even though its total salary was $50, Danielle offered to work on the show for free. However, the director wasn’t buying that, as other potential artists had already volunteered their labor for free. Concocting a unique strategy, Danielle asked the director “if he had 30 minutes, so that she could make him look homeless.” She nailed the make-up and got the job. Danielle left no stone unturned in building her career, so she tried every avenue: pouring through the industry trade magazines, checking Craigslist for jobs, answering all ads she

could find. In addition to doing a dose of freebees, Danielle reached back to MUD to find paid work, no matter the size of the project initially. Danielle noted that she flew by the seat of her pants, often devising on-the-spot make-ups for shows such as Touch. Adding a bruise make-up or bloody gash would regularly arise, so Danielle kept her make-up kit fully stocked in anticipation of these spontaneous challenges. Her most valuable lesson learned was to be ready for anything and always be adequately prepared when working on set. Her greatest strength, Danielle notes, is her ability to create anything asked of her, regardless of her given prep period. For Untold Stories of The ER, she fabricated such unorthodox make-ups as “hooks through a neck, or tree stumps in head”, which to her delight, always stood up on camera. She surmounted such challenges through a combination of her MUD training, her developing skills, and her steadfast belief in herself. Moreover, Danielle has proactively been surrounded by friends who have supported her and likeminded craftspeople from whom she has continued to learn. In the future, Danielle looks forward to balancing her professional life and her family life, which is also precious to her. Given her ongoing position as the make-up department head on many top television projects, Danielle looks to have a very bright career ahead.

For a highlight, lightly sweep Canvas Eye Color on the brow bone with the #320 Oval Shadow Brush.

Joel Harlow Interview

Not only have MUD graduates made a name for themselves, but the friends of MUD are always artists that believe in setting their own path to success. Events like Industry Speaks at the New York and Los Angeles campuses give students the opportunity to speak with lead artists every week. Some of the hottest names in the entertainment and beauty industry have graced the doors of MUD to show them what’s at the end of the tunnel of opportunity after graduating. Academy Award and Oscar winning artist, Joel Harlow sat down with MUD to share his humble beginnings from Grand Forks, North Dakota to on location with Johnny Depp. Growing up

Career

I was always interested in creating art. More specifically Monster or Creature art, and what started two dimensionally in sketchbooks and textbooks ultimately developed into three dimensional sculptures. As a youth, I knew I wanted to make monsters. As I grew, however, I realized what that really meant was that I wanted to create characters. My parents, Steve and Irene, were always very supportive and aided me in obtaining the various materials and tools I needed to advance in this arena. Without their support and encouragement, I am positive I would have followed a very different path.

A high school friend of mine, Mark Pederson, had moved to Florida and hooked up with an independent filmmaker named Tim Ritter. Tim was about to start shooting a film entitled, “Killing Spree” and I went down to handle the make-up effects. The entire budget was $1000 and I was tasked with building seven elaborate death scenes and bringing all the victims back from the dead.

Entertainment industry King Kong (1933 version). I remember being awestruck by Willis O’Brien’s stop motion of Kong. That experience stayed with me so deeply that when I moved to New York in 1986 to study film, I enrolled in the animation department.

Big Break I think moving to L.A. was perhaps the biggest step forward for my career. I don’t think that this would have happened when it did if I hadn’t met Gabe Bartalos while still in New York. Gabe had just finished shooting “Frankenhooker” and was gearing up to start “Basket Case 2.” I interviewed with Gabe and started the next day. After the film wrapped, Gabe offered me a position at his L.A. studio, Atlantic West Effects, on a film called “Happy Hell Night.” I gladly accepted and moved to Los Angeles, which I have called home ever since.

Heros and mentors I am always learning from other artists, but I’m not sure I would call them “heroes.” “Inspiration” is more appropriate, I’d say. If there were any make-up artists I would refer to as a mentor however, I would have to name two. The first would be Steve Johnson. I worked at Steve’s company XFX for about eight years when I first moved to L.A. and the things I learned there would fill a book. I think one of my favorite make-ups that I’ve created has been “Bootstrap Bill” from Pirates 2 and 3, however, the “Hell on Wheels” sequence from “The Lone Ranger” is loaded with special character make-ups and regardless of any critics opinion (armchair or otherwise) it is at the top of my favorite films list...I think that’d have to be it.

Inspiration My inspiration can come from anywhere. I surround myself with the work of other artists, both two and three dimensional, both classic artists and make-up artists. I will also derive inspiration from music or audio stories. There are inspirations everywhere, one just needs to be open to them, from the very obvious imagery in painting or sculpture to the images in the grain of a piece of wood or the shapes in a coffee stain on a desk...

Johnny Depp Working with Johnny is truly a dream come true. In developing a character, he brings no ego to the process. By that I mean that he is not concerned at all about seeing “himself” through the make-up. It’s all about designing the right look for the character, and he is very involved in the conceptualization process. We have developed a shorthand over the years which allows us to play around with looks (prosthetic or otherwise) with fantastic results. He understands the make-up world completely. He is very conscious of the time it takes to create and apply make-ups, as well as the potential fragility of a make-up once applied. There is a mutual respect we share for each other when it comes to creating a character...that is VERY rare!

Winning the Oscar The most important part of that evening was being able to share it with my parents. I was able to have them both at the awards presentation and after that evening, I gave them the award. & Shadow 101 Have you ever wondered why your make-up looks different than the images you see in magazines, on TV or in movies, and wondered why models and celebrities look so amazing? The secret is that make-up artists use highlights and shadows to completely transform a face and now you can incorporate highlights and shadows into your own make-up regimen. The beauty of using highlights and shadows is that you can utilize a little or a lot depending on if you are using these tips for everyday use or for a special occasion.

REMEMBER THAT HIGHLIGHTS BRING AREAS OF THE FACE FORWARD, WHILE SHADOWS PUSH THEM BACK

The art of highlighting and shading are techniques used in a make-up application to accentuate features and add depth. Used alone or together, they can help a face appear thinner, add lift to the eye area, create high cheekbones, and a defined the jawline, which will help the face look well balanced and youthful. Choosing a highlight or shadow product will create the most dramatic effect, however lighter and darker shades of foundation can be used for a much more subtle effect. By simply applying one shade darker foundation just beneath the cheekbones and blending it down to the jawline, you will create a slimming of the face. Using a highlight under the eyes or at the very corners of the mouth can brighten those areas and create a youthful appearance. If you use a cream foundation, use a cream highlight or shadow for maximum blend-ability. Set the cream products with a loose or pressed powder, then add a powder highlight and shadow to further enhance the cream.

The most common mistake we see is when someone copies what someone else does. What works on your face will not work on your friend’s face. Every application is different depending on the correction needed and how the make-up is viewed. You have a lot of product options when it comes to highlighting and shading your face, you can choose cream products, liquid products and a variety of powder products from bronzers and cheek colors to eye shadows. The application is determined by the effect you’re trying to achieve and which product will work best. As an example, if you have dry skin stay clear of powder products because they will enhance the texture of the skin.

Quick Tips: When highlighting with a Cream or a HD Liquid Make-up, use Brush #330 or a sponge. A smaller brush (#300 or #930) can be used for a more precise application. When using a powder such as the Lemon Cream, DFL1 or DFL2, use Brush #340 or a sponge. When shading with a Cream or a HD Liquid Make-up, use Brush #350 in smaller areas and Brush #340 or sponge for larger surface areas. When using a pressed powder, such as DFD1 or DFD2, use Brush #350 on smaller areas and Brush #510 or a sponge on larger areas.

For this model we wanted to diminish the size of her forehead and help balance her face. Using a shading color at least a shade or two darker than the foundation. We applied shading near the hairline and just above her temple to give the forehead dimension.

To create a defined jawline, apply the shading just below the edge of the jawbone and blend down towards the neck.

To add dimension to the bridge of her nose and to correct the slight bend at the end of her nose we shaded from the eye socket down the sides of the nose. We also shaded the slight fold above her eyelid to create a beautiful crease. Do not go below the outer corners of the eyes.

Adding highlight brings an area forward and is at least a shade or two lighter than the foundation. We applied highlight to the center of the forehead to help add dimension and we applied it to the center of her nose to help strengthen her bridge and to help correct the bend at the end of her nose.

To strengthen the cheekbone apply shading right below the cheekbone at a declined angle that follows the highlight. This shadow should be deepest in the hollow of the cheek. There should be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;blendingâ&#x20AC;? space in between your highlight and shadow on the cheekbone.

To bring out the brow bone and help define the eyebrow, we added a highlight just below the brow and you will also notice that this highlight helps to lift the outer corner of the eye. To correct the natural appearing shadow under her eye we added highlight just to the shaded area to pull it forward.

To finish creating a strong cheekbone we applied highlight to the top part of the cheekbone in a decline from the hairline to the apples of the cheeks. We also applied highlight to the outer corners of the mouth, below the lower lip, the top edge of the upper lip and the center of the chin for a bit of correction.

Finally, apply the highlight in the darkest part of any wrinkle to counteract the negative shadow, in this case we wanted to diminish her nasal labial folds.

Finish the look by blending the highlights and shadows with a sponge or a foundation brush to soften the edges and to create a gradient of color from light to dark. The highlights and shadows should be soft and subtle to the naked eye for day wear and more exaggerated for evening looks.

· Before applying lash strips, measure and trim any excess using MUD’s Manicure Scissors. · Apply a small amount of lash glue to base of strips or individual lashes. Allow 30-60 seconds of drying time for glue to become tacky. · Use MUD’s Orangewood Sticks to gently guide false eyelashes to base of lash line. · For a dramatic look, use MUD’s Cake Eyeliner over the lash line.

This attractive distribution model has made a positive impact in our beauty industry and MUD has partnered with top make-up artists, brands, national beauty pageants and professional outlets. The privilege to launch a MUD Studio was well celebrated on the 4th of June, where we saw celebrities and local press being introduced to the MUD Studio offering and international training curriculum. The team were honoured to have a whole week of insights and teachings from Paul Thompson leading up to the launch evening. Troy Watson provided us with visions and practices from around the world. We will most certainly keep the values of the MUD brand in high esteem in our market place and have already seen an exceptionally positive response in the last few months of trading. Brenda Botha, owner of MUD South Africa and MUD Studio Sandton, offers endless support to all of the showrooms and national distributors. Brenda is a dedicated leader who gives all of her time and efforts to growing and upholding the values of MUD international.

Our team travelled to visit the MUD showroom in Nelspruit/Mpumalanga which is located just outside of the Kruger National Park. Home to the BIG Five - Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, and White/Black Rhinoceros.
