MUD ART Students from MUD campuses and MUD Studios
Inspiring Students Around the World See what MUD is doing to educate aspiring professionals worldwide
The make-up industry is an intricate business, and we’re here to offer students the best hands-on curriculum available. With award-winning staff and state of the art facilities, we prepare budding make-up artists to work in television, film, fashion, theater and retail. MUD has two main campuses, the first which was founded in Los Angeles in 1997 and the second founded in New York in 2005. Both of these campuses are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC), and offer our full range of makeup programs and individual courses taught by our elite faculty. Additionally, we have over fifteen MUD Studios and MUD partner schools across the globe using our curriculum and products, making a top-tier make-up education accessible in dozens of countries. Our MUD Studios are small boutique stores loaded with opportunity, where professional artists guide visitors through products and educate students in fully equipped classrooms to teach our structured curriculum. MUD Partner Schools are then an opportunity for students to enjoy the benefits of the MUD curriculum and products in pre-existing schools worldwide. Whether you’re enrolled in one of our centrallylocated main campuses or using one of our bold lip colors at a Partner School, MUD will give you the tools you need to become an expert in the trade.

MUD Insider ... In 2005 MUD expanded nationally opening their New York City branch. What began as four classrooms in a loft in SOHO has grown to occupy the 15th floor of the historic, 21-story American Express building in the Financial District. The New York City branch now offers eight classrooms, administrative offices and a student store. MUD’s branch campus in New York received initial accreditation in 2008 and is continually working with ACCSC to bring excellence to their students.
York City has long been a hub for the beauty, fashion, theater, film, television and art worlds. When MUD’s New York Campus opened its doors in 2005, we were excited to create a center for aspiring and working make-up artists in one of the most bustling cities in the world.
The New York campus is located amidst the bustle of the world’s most renowned fashion designers, theaters, and network studios including ABC, CBS, ESPN, CNN and HBO just to name a few. Throughout all this growth and expansion MUD continues to always put their students first.

MUD Insider ... Make-Up Designory is located in beautiful Southern California with a short drive away from the wonderful beaches of Malibu. Being in the heart of Downtown Burbank, the campus is only minutes away from highly established production studios including Disney, Warner Bros. and NBC. Burbank is named after Dr. David Burbank, a real estate agent who famously built a ranch house where he raised sheep – which is now the Warner Bros. backlot! The MUD campus was formally a department store and an auto service center, oil stains can still be seen on the stripped floors. Award winning artists regularly visit the campus to speak to students, telling them their story and giving them the opportunity to have one on one conversations. “The Godfather of MakeUp,” Dick Smith, would regularly check out the MUDShop and FX supplies, while MUD has had the privilege of hosting Louie Zakarian from Saturday Night Live, Dave Elsey, Eryn Krueger Mekash and many more.
that’s no coincidence. When we founded MUD in 1997, we had a vision: to create a school for make-up artists, by make-up artists. Here, students can gain expertise in the varying aspects of make-up artistry from a team of educators who are also industry professionals.

LOS ANGELES
The Valley offers an urban life complete with countless cafés, movie theaters, and shops, and a close enough proximity to the city to keep things exciting. And don’t forget the beaches! The cities of Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, and Huntington Beach are what Southern California is all about.
GET INSPIRED BY LA MUD lives and thrives in the L.A. suburb of Burbank, a place many entertainment businesses also call home—from large studios, to many small production companies. Although L.A. has more than 13 million people, Burbank somehow feels like a small town. The Downtown District on San Fernando Boulevard has movie theaters, boutique shops, restaurants, and nightlife.
MUD’s flagship location was a car dealership almost a century ago, but today it’s a modern retail and learning space. The campus has nine remodeled classrooms, a full retail store, professional photo studio, sink room, and a learning resource center. The best view is from the street—where curious folks can peek in through the windows to see teachers doing workshops or MUD Shop employees giving free makeovers.

MUD GRADUATES - EMMYS®
credit: Television Academy
Looking back on 2018, there’s one thing we know, we are exceptionally proud of: our Emmy® nominated MUD graduates! Everyone knows MUD alumni are some of the most talented and professional artists in Hollywood, but we saw MUD represented more than ever before at the Emmys this year. Not only were nine of our graduates picked for acknowledgement, but two of our alumni, Melissa Buell and Carleigh Herbert, were nominated twice. Additionally, we saw some of our MUD graduates nominated for working on the same shows together, and we are proud to witness the Make-up Designory family living on long past when our students leave. These projects included Jen Fregozo and Nicole Faulkner both being nominated for Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and both Melissa Buell and Kristina Frisch being nominated for their work on GLOW. The winning artists this year spanned across a wide range of styles and decades, from the millennial remake of Westworld to Tina Fey’s episode of Saturday Night Live. Amongst this year’s winners from Make-up Designory were Emma Faulkes for her prosthetic work on Game of Thrones, and Natalie Driscoll for her hairstyling on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. We are incredibly proud of all our nominated graduates, each which did unique and innovative work on their respective television shows. With nine incredibly talented MUD alums recognized for projects ranging from monster prosthetics to 80s glam, here’s a breakdown of each of our Emmy nominated graduates this year.

life
Photos by Deverill Weekes and Shelby Michael Patton On November 3rd 2018, I was sitting in my car outside of Todd Tucker’s Illusion Industries, mentally preparing for the day ahead. The sun wasn’t even up yet, but I was ready to begin the day and finally apply the make-up that I had been building for the past month. The moment was utterly surreal - I had completed Make-up Designory’s Masters in Make-up Artistry program 4 years ago and here I was, about to apply an original prosthetic make-up for a feature spread in Make-Up Artist Magazine.

LIFECASTING AND MAKING YOUR POSITIVES
To ensure that the prosthetics fit your model exactly, the first step in all custom prosthetic make-ups is to take a lifecast of the model or actor who will be portraying the character. I recruited Kwame Head to portray Death. As a fellow MUD graduate, Kwame already had a

your career if you choose to pursue prosthetic make-ups.
2
SCULPTING AND MOLD-MAKING
Sculpting is another core part of the process of making a prosthetic make-up. The best sculptors spend years practicing and refining their craft, with many ultimately specializing in that skill exclusively. Even if your goal isn’t to become a master sculptor, learning the basics of the skill will greatly improve your understanding of make-up as a whole. MUD’s FX 301 program requires students to sculpt a wide variety of prosthetics – from small cuts and injuries to faces, full heads and overlapping make-ups. Once your sculptures are finalized, you’ll begin to prep them for molding. This includes doing a mold lay-up with clay (both oil and water-based clays are commonly used) to create a cutting edge, properly releasing the positive and sculpture so the mold can be easily opened and cleaned, and prepping your work station and materials for molding. For Death, I made a traditional ultracal positive and negative mold for the face, but for the cowl I decided to make a fiberglass negative (using the West Epoxy system) to keep the mold as light as possible. One of the benefits of MUD’s FX 301 program is that it allows students to gain practical experience working with a variety of mold-making materials, including stone and fiberglass. Once you have finished creating your negatives and cleaned out the clay, you will have the molds that will be used to create your prosthetics.

CASTING PROSTHETICS
Prosthetics can be made out of many materials, but two of the most common are foam latex rubber and encapsulated platinum silicone. There are pros and cons to each material, and as a make-up artist you will frequently need to decide which material is most appropriate for the given job. Because Death didn’t need to be particularly translucent, I opted to make my prosthetics out of foam latex. Afterwards, the molds were baked in MUD’s oven to remove moisture and any lingering gases. Injection ports were added to the cowl so that foam latex could be injected into mold once it was fully bolted closed. The face mold was an open pour, with the mold being closed after the foam latex was poured into the negative. Bleeders were also added to both molds to release air and prevent the formation of steam bubbles. In total, I ran 2-3 copies of both the face and cowl prosthetics, so I could pick the best runs to use for the photoshoot. Due to time restrictions, I opted to use some RBFX prosthetics to complete
4
my Death character – both the chest prosthetic and the foam nails featured on Death were purchased from RBFX, one of the absolute best providers of ultra-high-quality ready-made prosthetics.
PRE-PAINTING AND SEAMING After your prosthetics are successfully run, you’ll need to prep them for application. If you have a prosthetic that came out of a mold with multiple negative pieces, you’ll most likely have seam lines that need to be removed and patched (seam lines are where two pieces of a mold meet, leaving a small line marking that separation). For foam latex, any seamlines created from where two pieces of a mold meet need to be burned away with soldering tools and then cabo-patched (patched over with prosaide thickened with cabosil). If this is done carefully, the seamline will be completely undetectable after painting. If you have the time, pre-painting is a particularly useful trick for any make-up artist. It drastically reduces the amount of time it takes to apply the make-up to your model. Additionally, it allows the artist the opportunity to think about their painting process and color choices. For Death, I took the first run of my face prosthetic and used it to test out two different color options I was considering. While the differences might seem subtle, having the time to pre-paint allowed me to practice and refine the way I wanted to paint Death for the photoshoot. I used a combination of custom-made PAX paints (prosaide mixed with acrylic paint), an acrylic wash, and alcoholbased paints spattered with airbrushes to complete my pre-paint. After painting, the pieces were heavily powdered to protect them during transportation.

Magic
of Make-up Make-up is ultimately magical when it comes to correcting someone’s face, enhancing natural beauty, or telling the story of someone’s life right on their face. For our characters we incorporated as many techniques as possible, including basic corrective beauty, body painting, airbrush, tattooing and prosthetics. Our goal for this editorial was to showcase the transformative effects of make-up on the same model and represent five distinct characters; the warrior elf, the doll, the lady of society, the punk rocker and the girl next door. The Doll // Vanja created this doll look using a generous amount of both cream and powder highlights and shadows. Luster Highlight Powder is used to create that porcelain doll effect. For the illusion of larger eyes she decided against using false lashes, rather she drew the lower lash line with our Brown Cake Eyeliner. Marusha applied a half wig to add more length and volume to our model’s hair. She curled the hair and used a back combing technique to the upper back part of her head for dramatic volume. 02. He used a thinned mixture of our HD Air Liquid Make-up in a custom freckle color on low pressure so that the airbrush “spit” small spots of color onto the skin in a random pattern. Marusha created a naturally wavy hairstyle using hot curlers. 03. The Lady of Society // HD Air, an airbrush and lace are used to create the lacy dress for the “Lady of Society”. Black HD Air was applied first by Vanja and Marusha across the chest and onto the shoulders. Once set, lace was laid over the black and sprayed with white make-up, which cre ated the delicate look. 04. Marusha took the lead on this look and
created an upscale hair style with a strong beauty make-up with cream foundation that is accented by a winged liner with our Black Cake Eyeliner. 05. The Punk Rocker // For the punk rock look we did minimal make-up with more chiseled shading, smoky eye and we lightened the eyebrows. Additionally, Vanja freehand drew tattoos using our Taupe and Black Eye Pencils and a bluish shade of alcohol-based make-up. For the hair we created the illusion the model has a short hair style with a simple updo. 06. MUD interview with a visual artist, performer and make-up artist: Hungry
At MUD, we’re proud to recognize students who have gone on to inspire us as much as our teachers. Hungry is one of those students, a graduate of our MUD Studio in Berlin, who is making waves across the worldwide drag and make-up scenes. The visual artist and performer (formerly introducing himself as a drag character) Hungry develops alien-like make-ups that are both unnerving and delightful, and spent last year working with the likes of Bjork while staying based in Berlin. We caught up with him to talk about his experiences.

IS MAKE-UP JUST A TOOL IN THE ART DIRECTION OF YOUR CHARACTERS?
There is quite an objective view on beauty, which would be symmetry, understanding of color,

HOW WOULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF?
WHEN CREATING A LOOK, WHICH PART OF THE PROCESS EXCITES YOU THE MOST?
Whenever I am introducing myself now, I usually call myself a visual artist and performer. I used to introduce myself as a drag character, but it still has

REGARDING YOUR ARTWORK, ARE YOU FONDER OF THE CONCEPTUAL APPROACH, THE AESTHETICS AND VISUAL, OR IS IT ABOUT THE MESSAGE OF YOUR ART?
BESIDES THE PRODUCTS, WHAT IMPORTANT TECHNIQUES HAVE YOU LEARNED AT MUD? DO YOU INCORPORATE ANY OF OUR TECHNIQUES INTO YOUR WORK?

YOU’VE SAID YOU BEGAN WITH STAGE PERFORMANCE AND THEN TRANSITIONED TO MAKE-UP. DID DRAG LEAD YOU TO YOUR MAKE-UP WORK?
Also, my approach to cleaning and organizing my kit really changed after being in a class environment. I became very serious about having my tools very clean and neat.
When I started drag, I was doing very normal makeups. Then, I was wearing the outfits that I made and realized that the make-up didn’t really do them justice — so I reinvented the whole thing. I can

What keeps me going is creating something new, and especially new characters. So, whenever there is a standstill and I don’t get the chance to work on new projects or outfits, it drains me in a way.

AS YOU MENTIONED, THE LAST YEAR WAS VERY INTENSE. YOU GOT MORE AND MORE WIDESPREAD ATTENTION. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS THE MOST SURPRISING THING YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF?
IS HUNGRY YOUR ALTER EGO OR IS IT YOU? Hungry is me — just a bit more playful and outgoing me. Whatever you do with drag helps you be more outgoing and social. You are forced to be social because you are noticed, because you force

most me I can feel. That to me is me being present, it’s me being in a look, and it’s me being in a character or in drag. Everything that is not that, like men in the daytime, is what I consider the worker behind it. The person I am is more of a hermit who creates the things and who is less out-there. I cannot really compare my everyday self to my drag self, and I have come to realize that I can actually focus all of my energy into being my drag self. I don’t really need to care of my personal self that much. It’s not the healthiest approach I suppose, because I don’t treat myself as well as my character.

“ WHAT KEEPS ME
GOING IS CREATING SOMETHING NEW AND NEW CHARACTERS.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER MUSIC TO BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR LIFE?
IN A PERFECT WORLD WHERE EVERYBODY EXCEPTS EVERYBODY, DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD STILL HAVE THE NEED FOR THIS OUTGOING VERSION OF YOURSELF?
Music isn’t necessarily a big part of my life. Growing up I would just like what my siblings liked, and I never did my own research. There are definitely

much noise everywhere, so I try to completely tune everything out.
WHAT IS YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA AESTHETIC? WOULD YOUR PATH BE THE SAME WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA? Without social media and without my Instagram, my work would not be where it is right now. With the constant competition, it gives you an instinctive drive. Also, it gives you so many more opportunities and chances. Because I approach Instagram and social media like it’s my portfolio, I present everything in the manner I would like it to be presented. Then, I just leave it to the people to like it or not like it.

New York City goes by many names: The Big Apple, The City That Never Sleeps, and
New York
The City of Dreams, to name a few. The
energy of NYC is unmatched, full of rushing
taxis and bustling pedestrians from every walk of
life. If you have an aspiration, sparkling, gritty, sky-scraper
decorated New York City is the place where you can make your dreams a reality. While we may know New York as the home of Wall Street and Broadway, it has also become an international hub for make-up artists and industry professionals. For this reason, New York is home to our second MUD campus, a school occupied by some of the most forward-thinking students and experienced professionals in the world. Thus, we’ve chosen to continue our "People Of" series in The City. We invited passersby to have their make-up done by some of our talented staff. Their image was captured while discussing their lives in The Capitol of the World.
If there’s one thing we know at MUD, it’s that the diverse people who make up our world are our biggest strength and inspiration. With a little extra pampering, we hope to give people the confidence they need to be their truest selves. 128
