EDITOR’S LETTER
Dear Readers, You—our audience—curated this magazine issue. You chose well too. Thank you. You cast over 105,000 online votes to choose the Best Of 2015 winners. To be precise, you cast exactly 105,617 online votes. Those are extraordinary numbers! It’s our great pleasure to present the Best Of 2015 winners to you in this issue, online at makeitbetter.net/Bestof2015 and at our Best Of 2015 Celebration at the Chicago Botanic Gardens on September 1. (By the way, please be our guests for this music-filled night under the stars in Chicago’s most beautiful outdoor venue by registering at makeitbetter.net/ bestofcelebration.)
YOU CHOOSE. WE WIN. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! BY SUSAN B . NOYE S
In this issue though, you didn’t just curate the Best Of 2015 list. You also influenced much of the other content too, because we “reverse publish” from online into print what our audience finds most engaging. We’re also particularly proud to share two other newsworthy facts with you: FACT #1 Make It Better Cofounder Mindy Fauntleroy and I recently received Top Women In Media Folio Awards. We were given these awards as Most Inspiring Entrepreneurial Women in New York City on June 8. We were the only regional publishers to win. Other winners included the New York Times, Hearst, Financial Times and the Harvard Business Review. In the publishing world, this was a bit like winning an Oscar. Pretty cool, right? You can see the video at makeitbetter.net/mibtv/folio.
This award was only made possible because of the outstanding quality of our audience. Remember, we reverse publish what you tell us is important to you. Fortunately, because you are smart and have great values, you intuitively create or support win/win scenarios. So following your lead takes us in inspiring and successful directions. Again, thank you very much. FACT #2 94% of our audience reads our magazines cover to cover. The Circulation Verification Council (CVC) audit data we recently received proves that our audience keeps our magazines three months or longer, refers others to our content, and intentionally supports our advertisers. This is powerful data. And, again, that is because of you. You are powerful for us too. Therefore, please keep engaging with Make It Better Media. If you don’t yet do so, please follow us online by subscribing to our biweekly “Better Letter” email newsletter and MIB TV videos, join our vibrant social networks listed below, come to the events we sponsor. Sign up for the Better Letter at makeitbetter.net/subscribe. But, even more importantly, please keep telling us what is important to you. Because you are important to us. Thank you, very much. With Warm Regards,

Bill and I were at a friend’s house for a BBQ. My girlfriend told everyone at dinner how she had come from a girls’ night out to find her husband sitting on the sofa with his feet propped up reading our Summer Go Guide. We All Scream for Ice Cream
Northbrook is now the primo destination for some of the best ice cream around. Graeter’s, founded in 1870 in Cincinnati, has opened its first Illinois store, and it’s an unqualified success. The fourth generation of the Graeter family has brought in some new ideas—gelato, low-glycemic flavors, fruit smoothies—but their core dedication to the French-pot, small batch process and the finest, freshest ingredients remains unchanged. This ice cream is so thick that the pints must be packed by hand at the factory. Black Raspberry Chip, Graeter’s most popular flavor, is chock-full of their signature dark chocolate chunks and Oregon berries. One of downtown Chicago’s favorite fast-casual places has made it up to the northern suburbs: Freshii has opened in Evanston. Locals can be found lining up for the über-fresh juices (the Green Refresher— filled with kale, green apples, celery, cucumbers and lime—is a favorite), smoothies, soups, salads, bowls and wraps. Vegetarians, vegans and pescetarians can rejoice, but meat lovers will also dig the antibiotic- and hormone-free chicken and steak options. Plus, they offer Lifeway’s Frozen Kefir, so you can get your sweet on in a healthy fashion. FRESHII: 1596 Sherman Ave., Evanston, 847448-4300, freshii.com—JC

SELLING OUT STADIUMS MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND MARVEL UNIVERSE LIVE!, MONSTER JAM & MORE BY SUSAN B . NOYE S
Juliette Feld’s grandfather was a rock ‘n’ roll promoter who expanded into other forms of live entertainment. His business, Feld Entertainment, eventually grew to include Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney On Ice, stadium motor sport events and the recently launched Marvel Universe LIVE! The family business he founded is remarkable, but 33-year-old Juliette Feld herself is his greater legacy.
Feld and her two sisters grew up immersed in the family business. “Every vacation was spent at Disney On Ice rehearsals or the Ringling Bros. winter headquarters near Tampa, Florida,” she says. “Clown Alley clowns were my babysitters.“ She fell in love with Chicago and met her future husband as an undergrad at the University of Chicago. Now, her marriage,
30
A U G U S T/ S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 5
30_SusanColumn.indd 30
too, is immersed in the family business. For example, every Valentine’s Day is spent in Chicago at Monster Jam—one of her motor sport productions, “What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than at Monster Jam?” Feld laughs. In the newest Monster Jam format, one athlete—male or female—competes in seven events, driving three different tricked-out vehicles (trucks with huge tires, super jackedup golf carts and ATVs). Feld proudly notes that Monster Jam is an equal opportunity sport for women and men. “The women often win!” she says. “It’s very aspirational for women and girls.” This petite woman makes no small plans. Feld spent two years developing Marvel Universe LIVE! The extravaganza includes more than 25 Marvel characters, flying, crashes, new projection technology that transforms the arena floor from NYC to the Himalayas, and more.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF JULIEETE FELD
A petite, beautiful mother of a 6-month-old, Feld is also smart, focused and determined. Before age 30, she became America’s first female motor sports producer. She’s now an Executive Vice President and lead producer of the live Marvel show, the company’s most ambitious production yet. MBA-trained, Feld works closely with her father and two older sisters to keep the company strategically focused on its mission to provide the highest-quality family entertainment around the world. As a young female executive in a male-dominated world, she’s a fantastic role model for other women and girls.

Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation (CEC)
“Because it’s Marvel, people have high expectations based on the comic books and movies,” she says. “This is the first time they will see all their favorite superheroes in one show and we can’t disappoint.” The production comes to Chicago’s United Center in September, so you will soon be able to decide for yourself if Feld achieves her goal.
Marvel Universe LIVE!
Fortunately, all those elephants will have a good retirement waiting for them at the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation (CEC). The nonprofit was established on 200 acres outside Orlando, Fl. in 1995 for the retirement, reproduction and research of Asian elephants.
Being attentive to the audience can lead to difficult decisions, too. Her family announced earlier this year that elephants will be phased out of the three Barnum & Bailey Circus productions by 2018. “We listened to the customers,” Feld says. “They are no longer comfortable with elephants in shows.”
In short, with her good brains, good values, make-no-small-plans sensibilities, and enthusiasm for and pride in her work, Feld is already carving out a bigger and better legacy for her family’s remarkable business while serving as a role model for other young women looking to become leaders one day.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF JULIEETE FELD
Feld says watching families react to her shows is one of the best parts of the job. “I get to see the audience consume the experience—watching parents and children react as Spiderman flies right at them.”
“As a family, we are very proud of our elephant conservation work,” Feld says. “It translates to better support for about 40,000 elephants in their native habitat too, particularly Sri Lanka.” Feld delights in the fact that more than 26 elephants have been born at CEC. “This is more than the births in all other facilities and zoos in the US put together.”

SHOULD YOU
REDSHIRT YOUR CHILD FOR KINDERGARTEN? BY MAUR A FL AHERT Y
Kathy Hardy, Winnetka Community Nursery School Director, says she has always regretted not “buying” her daughter, now 27, an extra year of preschool.
“Every year until my daughter was 23, I sort of felt that she lagged behind socially and emotionally,” she says. Hardy has worked with young children and families for over 22 years, and she says she has seen parental concern over redshirting become increasingly more common in the past few years. Statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) support Hardy’s observation, showing redshirting has grown substantially in the past 40 years, now nationally at a rate of 9 percent of kindergarteners. The trend occurs much more frequently in boys.

Earlier this year, The Alliance for Early Childhood invited Dr. Samuel Meisels, president emeritus of the Erikson Institute and the nation’s leading authority on the assessment of young children, to Kenilworth to speak about redshirting. While Meisels has published nearly 200 articles, graphs and books, and appeared on “60 Minutes” to discuss this very topic, he warns young parents and educators that there is no clear answer. “This topic is really sort of a mess,” Meisels says. What he means is little data has been collected nationally on redshirting, and from that little data, the conclusions sway both ways. He references research from Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers,” which discusses studies showing that most professional hockey players and CEOs were all older for their grades. He then counters that with research that indicates kids who are older for their grades experience more social problems and tend to experiment with more drugs and alcohol in high school.

“As parents you can’t help but want the leg up for your child,” Hardy says. Hardy is referring to academic redshirting, the practice of intentionally holding your child out an extra year before entering kindergarten. Hardy’s daughter was the youngest in her class with her birthday at the very end of August. Despite the preschool teacher’s warnings that her daughter seemed young for her age, often acting on impulse, Hardy sent her ahead.

His biggest warning against redshirting comes from an ethical standpoint: An extra year of preschool is not free, and not everyone can afford to pay for it. “This conversation doesn’t take place very much on the South Side of Chicago,” he says. “There isn’t any free or public preschool for 5-year-olds.”
“One of the pros of buying your child an extra year is that they become more of themselves, or more of who they are becoming,” Hardy says. In that extra year, she says children can practice social skills, moving in and out of groups and selfregulatory skills.
Another consideration, he says, is the effect redshirting has on educators, who will potentially be dealing with classrooms where children span even greater age gaps and academic abilities.
Her advice to parents who are not sure about whether or not to hold their parents back is to sit down and talk to the child’s preschool and future kindergarten teachers.
REASONS PARENTS CHOOSE TO REDSHIRT
“Where you have raised a child, we have helped raise hundreds,” she says. “Our classrooms are our laboratories.”
Meisels says there is legitimacy behind parents’ concerns about whether to let their child move ahead to kindergarten, which he blames on today’s curriculum. “Today, if we look at the curriculum in first, second, third grade and in kindergarten, it’s roughly a year beyond what was expected a decade ago,” he says. “I wouldn’t be surprised to hear you say, ‘Well, I’m not sure that what they’re asking my little boy or girl to do is something that he or she is comfortable doing.’”
Hardy says her school district uses these six skills as a guide to assess readiness: 1. Sits on the rug and listens to others 2. Demonstrates a comfort level when engaging in problem solving, learning experiences and unstructured play experiences 3. Displays self-regulation and control impulses in age-appropriate ways 4. Communicates needs, wants and thoughts verbally 5. Takes turns and shares 6. Demonstrates enthusiasm and curiosity
PHOTO <CREDIT>
Hardy agrees with Meisels that redshirting is quite a tricky topic. She says that she and her staff have recommended parents redshirt their children, but it is uncommon. When the staff does recommend a parent redshirt a child, she says it has to do with the child’s development, specifically a child’s social and emotional development.

6 DESTINATION SPAS THAT ARE SO WORTH THE TRIP BY AMBER GIBSON
Although Chicago has some great spas, there’s nothing like escaping the city and sinking into the deepest kind of relaxation. You won’t want to leave the property at these resorts, which combine extraordinary spas with extravagant accommodations, scrumptious food and impeccable service. The extensive menu of indigenous Native American treatments is inspired by the healing traditions of the Pima and Maricopa tribes. Don’t miss the most luxurious of all: a Ho’ishp sacred prickly pear body treatment. First, your body is enveloped in a space-age steam capsule after you are loofahed and painted with prickly pear red clay. The red clay detoxifies the body while the steam allows nourishing prickly pear antioxidants to best penetrate the skin. Then, receive a full hour massage with prickly pear and aloe oil and gel to soothe and rehydrate. Finish it all with hot prickly pear tea and a sweet jelly candy to get the native cactus fruit’s benefits both inside and out. 5594 W. Wildhorse Pass Blvd., Chandler, Arizona, 602-385-5759

Rustic and luxury design elements coexist peacefully in a centuryold ranch house in Golf. “I’ve always loved the idea of living in a beautiful farmhouse,” says the owner of a century-old four-bedroom ranch with an English country vibe in the village of Golf. Located on a nearly one acre lot, the rambling four-bedroom house, which was originally built as a stable, has a painted brick exterior with a slate roof, gas-burning lanterns and other charming Cotswold details that immediately appealed to the wife and stay-at-home mom with three kids. “I fell in love with the house, but it wasn’t set up for our family,” she says. “Before it was very choppy, and there was no hallway, so you’d go from room to room.” To design and build the gut renovation and new addition, which included a bedroom wing and a new basement, the owners hired Doug Reynolds, of Reynolds Architecture Design and Construction. The changes begin in the front of the house where he built a new porch where the owners enjoy relaxing at the end of the day. It leads inside to a mudroom with custom locker-style cabinetry and a seating ledge with built-in storage. “Originally you had to circumvent maid quarters and bedrooms to get from the garage to the kitchen,” Reynolds says. “There were a lot of carved-up spaces that we reconfigured.” In doing so, Reynolds created interesting perspectives where there were none before. The spacious entry foyer, for instance, now looks directly into the husband’s new library, which the wife covered with grass cloth wallpaper. “Everything is in alignment now, and that is a more pleasing way to pass through the space,” Reynolds says. A newly created corridor connecting the original house to the new addition has French doors that look out onto a raised bluestone patio with an outdoor fireplace in the backyard. “Creating this courtyard was a natural way to bring light into the interior and is the centerpiece to the new wing of the house,” Reynolds says.

cabinets in lieu of upper wall cabinets. “Before it was very modern and didn’t feel like it went with this house,” the wife says. “I like the old feel.”
For the interior design, the wife worked with Linda Hoffman, of Reynolds Architecture, to combine contemporary pieces with rustic ones you might find in an old farmhouse. “I love design and spent hours looking for things,” the wife says. The custom vanity in the powder room, for example, is made from an antique table that has been topped with marble and a ceramic vessel sink. That aesthetic carries into the kitchen, which has been completely remodeled with wall niches and skirted base
The couple recently hosted a Kentucky Derby-themed dinner party for six other couples on their raised patio. “Everybody was wearing hats, and we had a Bourbon tasting,” the wife says. As their guests sipped on spirits in front of the outdoor fireplace, she and her husband marveled at how well the house functioned for them and their family. “It’s much easier to tear down a house than renovate,” she says. “But we had the vision, and Doug did a great job putting it all together.”

6 OLD-SCHOOL DESIGN RULES YOU SHOULD BREAK BY R ACHEL BROWN KULP
Chicago designer Summer Thornton’s motto is, “No amazing room was ever created without taking a risk.” We couldn’t agree more.
OLD-SCHOOL RULE #1: EVERY ROOM NEEDS A RUG How to break it: If you’ve got gorgeous floors, don’t be afraid to let them shine! Designer Michael Del Piero says bare wooden floors can ground the other design elements in a room. She especially loves highlighting standout flooring like wide planks, hand-scraped walnut or natural limestone. The result is elegant, spare and surprisingly dramatic.
OLD-SCHOOL RULE #2: BUY MAJOR PIECES IN NEUTRAL COLORS How to break it: "I have no idea where the convention began that sofas should be neutral,” Thornton says. “At our firm we use dramatic patterns and colors…even in the core pieces of a room, because they create a statement about the owner that says they're more interesting than beige." It might be scary to spring for that pink mohair sofa, but audacity pays off in myriad ways. Choosing a vibrant color

for your main piece of furniture will actually limit your options when it comes to designing the room—which can be a good thing if you find yourself paralyzed by indecision. Plus, a bold piece will give your room presence.
OLD-SCHOOL RULE #3: EVERY LIVING ROOM NEEDS A COFFEE TABLE How to break it: Lake Forest designer Lisa Wolfe says to start by figuring out what function a table needs to serve in your room. Some rooms need a place to display books and objects, while some just need a perch for cocktails. Once you know what you need, you can discard what you don’t. If you don’t need a large storage piece in the center of the room, don’t have one. Wolfe loves to swap out the cumbersome cocktail table for an arrangement of smaller pieces. “They meet the functional requirements but are also incredibly flexible,” she says. “And if you pull it off well, it looks artistically sculptural.”
OLD-SCHOOL RULE #4: JUST ONE LEATHER PIECE PER ROOM How to break it: Leather is a practical material and lends depth and character to any environment, but a suite of leather furniture can give off a cheesy bachelor-pad vibe. The

after all, some guidelines can be helpful when you don’t have the benefit of an interior designer at your disposal—a little selective rule-breaking can yield stunning results. Here, Thornton and six other intrepid designers tell us which rules were made to be broken, and how to do it with style.

small space. Beth Boyd of Highland Park’s Wiley Designs says, “Blending different patterns together successfully…is largely about changing up the scale of the patterns as well as changing the patterns themselves.” She suggests mixing stripes with florals and geometric patterns in a variety of sizes. “Color intensity is another element to consider,” Boyd says. “Select a palette with one or two deeper colors and the balance of the colors in softer hues.”
OLD-SCHOOL RULE #5: AVOID TOO MANY PATTERNS IN A SMALL SPACE How to break it: When employed strategically, richly layered patterns can be symphonic and utterly luxurious in a

OLD-SCHOOL RULE #6: LIVING ROOMS MUST HAVE SOFAS How to break it: For many of us, this is not a just a design rule, but an unquestionable truth. Yet, there’s more than one way to sit and chat! Chicago designer Kim Scodro says a large sofa can weigh down a room. A grouping of chairs, on the other hand, creates an intimate atmosphere without forcing guests to sit in an awkward lineup, and affords you greater variety in your materials. “…By using two sets of chairs, [you are] able to introduce different fabric and wood tones that a large sofa would not allow,” Scodro says.

trick to avoiding this look is to mix leather pieces to keep it interesting, according to Chicago design team Cari Giannoulias and Melissa Lewis. Skip the matching altogether, and instead pair sleek modern leather with something vintage and patinaed. “By incorporating two different feels, the leathers complement each other instead of fighting for the viewer’s attention,” Lewis says.

ART IN MOTION EVENT RAISES RECORD FUNDING FOR REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO B Y R E H A B I L I TAT I O N I N S T I T U T E O F C H I C A G O THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 2015 MARKED the
13th Annual Art in Motion Opening Night Awards Celebration hosted by the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago’s Associate Board. Art in Motion is an important fundraiser and unique art exhibition that brings together Chicago’s art and philanthropic communities in support of art therapy. All proceeds from this event go to the Art Therapy Program and Therapeutic Recreation Program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC).
This year, over 150 professional artists submitted their pieces to Judge James Rondeau, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, for review and selection. Narrowing the field of pieces to 40 was a challenge as Mr. Rondeau says “the quality of innovative and expressive art continues to get better each year as more artists aspire to be featured in this special show.” The event truly

RIC’s Art Therapy program is funded solely through generous philanthropic support, and the donations made through this event enable hundreds of patients to paint, draw and create. In addition to traditional physical therapy, speech and occupational therapy, art therapy is an integral part of patient care at RIC. Art therapy not only allows patients to relearn motor skills and coordination, but also helps them express their emotions as they adjust to a new way of life. Some patients even discover previously untapped artistic talents that they often continue to explore for the rest of their lives. Art in Motion Co-Chairs, Mark Gorman, Alison Miner and Kipper Lance, along with the RIC Associate Board, hosted over 400 guests at the Opening Night Awards Celebration—raising more than $100,000 for RIC’s Art Therapy Program and making this year the most successful year in Art in Motion’s history. RIC has held the #1 Rehabilitation Hospital ranking by U.S. News & World Report since 1991. This prestigious recognition remains unmatched by any other hospital of any kind in the United States.

MONEY WITH A CONSCIENCE THE RISE OF SOCIAL IMPACT INVESTING BY S U S A N PA S T E R N A K
Can you imagine your investments not only reaping financial returns, but also supporting societal change? Welcome to social impact investing, a trend that’s gaining momentum as investors realize that profit and impact are not mutually exclusive. “Investors now are asking, ‘How can I do well in my investments and do good for others and the environment,’ says Tom Lillard, First Vice President at Merrill Lynch. In Lillard’s case, he analyzes and vets fund managers to ensure they are meeting environmental, social and governance standards (ESG) without sacrificing returns. The laws of supply and demand will then take hold: more money flows to socially conscious companies, spurring social benefits across the globe. The financial industry has taken note of the increasing demand for investments that meet ESG criteria including issues related to workplace safety and hiring practices; climate change and energy use; and corporate political contributions and diversity on boards. In fact, the Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF), a membership association composed of professionals, firms, institutions and organizations engaged in socially responsible and sustainable investing
(SRI), reports that $1 in every $6 under professional management in the U.S. is now aligned with SRI investing strategies. That’s up from 1-in-9 dollars in 2012. Furthermore, assets and numbers of funds incorporating ESG criteria have jumped to $4.31 trillion in 2014 from $1.01 trillion in 2012.
“The old idea that our job is just to make money is not sustainable,” Griffin says. “How people think about risk is dynamic and changing. Clients are now looking at their lifetime and their children’s lifetime and asking, ‘How is this going to affect the environment, ’ which is fueling much of the demand for SRI products.”
SRI shouldn’t be confused with philanthropy, suggests Audrey Choi, CEO of the Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing. Instead, investors should take their best practices in traditional investing and make them more thoughtful.
Some points to consider for anyone interested in SRI:
“Sustainable investing does not require a financial tradeoff,” Choi says. “You can absolutely do this while still applying all the principals of quality investing. Over time, it’s our real belief that sustainable investing should become a redundant term.” The numbers are compelling. Morgan Stanley analyzed the performance of more than 10,000 equity mutual funds and found that sustainable equity funds met or exceeded median returns of traditional equity funds during 64 percent of the time periods examined. Millennials have shown a particular interest in SRI, says Marguerite Griffin, national director of philanthropic services at Northern Trust.
1. Apply the same rigor to the process of sustainable investing as you would with traditional investing. 2. Seek out professional advice from someone (i.e. a financial manager) who has vetted the ESG criteria of funds. 3. Take time to think about your goals for social impact, and express them to your financial advisor. For example, are you particularly interested in issues of energy use and impact on the environment? 4. Don’t confuse philanthropy with your investment strategy. You should still reap profits from your investments. 5. Start small. Most financial advisors encourage portfolio diversity and your SRI strategy should follow the same guidelines. TIPS FOR ACHIEVING THE BEST FAUX GLOW BY JENNY MUSLIN
|
P H OTO B Y J E N N I F E R AV E L LO
Tanning may be passé, but you can’t deny that bronzed, dewy skin looks fantastic year-round. These beauty tips will give you a safe, natural-looking glow and trick others into thinking you just returned from the tropics. Begin by applying tinted moisturizer to your face, neck and décolletage. Try a multi-functional tinted moisturizer like Shiseido White Lucent All Day Brightener For Face, SPF 22 as it moisturizes and protects skin while diminishing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Follow with eye cream. Layer your foundation or concealer over the moisturizer, and your skin will still look luminous. If you’ve used a tinted moisturizer, you only need a light application of bronzer. Try Kevyn Aucoin Beauty ‘The Celestial’ Bronzing Veil. It blends

in easily and gives skin a natural-looking tan without appearing orange or sparkly. Using a brush, make a number 3 on both sides of your face so you’re covering your forehead, cheeks and jawline. Don’t forget to bronze your neck, too. Apply cream blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend it in with your fingers using an upwards, sweeping motion. Then, press the cream blush onto your lips and finish with clear lipgloss. A highlighter like RMS Luminizer works on all skin tones and makes skin look refreshed. Using your fingers, blend this
at the inner corners of your eyes and just underneath your eyebrows for eyes that pop. Finish with mascara. If you’re showing bare legs or arms, apply Prtty Peashun Skin Tight Body Lotion to your body. This light-reflecting lotion covers up imperfections like bruises, veins, and cellulite. Available in a variety of shades, the soft shimmer makes skin look naturally radiant. If you want slightly less shimmer, mix some of the Prtty Peaushun with your regular body moisturizer. #FITNESS
BY CHRIST Y COUGHLIN
From Michelle Obama to Sarah Jessica Parker, buff arms are all the rage. If you want to achieve a stronger, shapelier upper arm, Armie Zabat, ACE Personal Trainer at Michigan Shores Club (michiganshores.com), offers these easy, effective exercises that can be done outdoors, using a park bench, a band and your body weight. PERFORM 2-4 SETS OF 12-15 REPETITIONS FOR ALL EXERCISES. BENCH PUSH-UPS
(works chest, shoulders, upper back, core and triceps) Step 1: Start in a push-up position on the bench making sure your shoulders line up over top of your wrist, your back is flat and core is engaged. Step 2: While maintaining proper body position, slowly lower yourself down toward the bench as you inhale. Step 3: Press your body back up to the starting position as you exhale, while maintaining proper form throughout the entire range of motion.
STANDING HIGH ROW WITH RESISTANCE BAND Step 1: Anchor the band to a bench. Stand with your back straight and legs apart. Use an overhand grip on the band handle in front of your body as starting position. Step 2: Inhale as you pull the exercise band back to your upper chest and shoulders bringing your elbows back behind you while squeezing the shoulder blades. Exhale as you slowly return your arms to starting position.

WIDE-LEGGED SQUAT WITH SHOULDER FRONT RAISE
(works shoulders, adductors, gluteal, and core) Step 1: Step on the band with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, toes pointed out with heels in, arms in front of your body with an overhand grip on the band handles.
TRICEP BENCH DIPS
Step 2: Inhale as you bend both knees, keeping your back straight as you raise your arms in front to about shoulder level; exhale as you slowly come up to starting position.
(works triceps and shoulders)
Step 1: Sitting on a bench, place your hands on the edge of the bench, next to your hips. Slide off of the bench until you are supporting yourself with only your arms and legs.
LUNGE CURL WITH RESISTANCE BAND
Step 2: Place your legs so your thighs and shins are at a 90-degree angle to each other. Legs are hip-width apart.
Step 1: Place the center of the band under the instep of your left foot and position your right foot about two feet behind you.
Step 3: Lower yourself down, bending the elbows to 90 degrees as you inhale. Exhale as you push yourself up to starting position, pausing at the top to contract your triceps.
Step 2: With an underhand grip on the band's handles, breathe in as you perform a bicep curl while bending your knees to lower into a lunge position. Breathe out as you come back up to starting position. Switch the forward leg with each set.

#VIAGRA
WHERE’S THE
VIAGRA FOR WOMEN? BY MAR JIE KILLEEN
You’ve seen the ads. Rugged middleaged man, oozing virility, builds campfire, obviously capable of meeting life’s physical challenges. Mature couple dances on beach; man confident he’s ready to perform when things turn frisky. Campaigns for drugs like Viagra and Cialis strongly reinforce the idea that men deserve to enjoy sex throughout their lives, but when it comes to similar messages for women, cue the crickets. There are more than 25 FDA-approved drugs to treat male sexual dysfunction; it’s a multi-billion dollar industry. But with the exception of some drugs for vaginal dryness, treatments for women have been non-existent. Since more women suffer from sexual dysfunction than men do, this is concerning (a widely quoted American Journal of Medicine study found that 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men encounter sexual dysfunction). Women deserve lifelong satisfying sex, too! Is this gap in health care due to biology, or is it—as some claim—discrimination? Elevating the debate is a drug called Flibanserin, which is the first pharmaceutical intended to treat women’s most common sexual problem—Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)— by focusing on the chemistry of a woman’s brain. In June, a FDA advisory committee recommended Flibanserin be approved. The drug previously had been rejected twice; many think the change in course is due to recent pressure from women’s groups moreso than compelling new evidence of the drug’s success. Whether or not Flibanserin will pass approval isn’t certain, but there’s a growing demand for the FDA to make products like it to available to women, who want and need support for a satisfying sex life as much as men do. Like most things sexual, the issue of female arousal is complicated. Dr. Stacy Lindau, Associate Professor of Obstetrics/ Gynecology at the University of Chicago, says sexual desire is a bio-psychosocial phenomenon for both men and women. People’s turn-ons are influenced by multiple factors beyond physical readiness, including values, culture and motivation. 82
82_Sex_2.indd 82
A U G U S T/ S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 5
“Desire is the combination of stimuli,” Lindau says. “A person’s biology could be working just fine, but if they’re not exposed to stimuli, what is there to desire?” Drugs like Cialis and Viagra don’t treat lack of desire; they treat erectile dysfunction (ED) by increasing blood flow to the penis. According to Viagra’s website, “You will not get an erection just by taking Viagra. You must be sexually stimulated for it to work.” So men must experience both desire and physical readiness to have intercourse, but women can engage without necessarily feeling much of either. This anatomical difference makes it harder to pinpoint women’s sexual problems as well as evaluate drugs that could treat them. According to Sheryl Kingsberg, Chief of Behavioral Medicine at Case Medical Center, quoted on the Even the Score website (which advocates for women’s access to arousal-related pharmaceuticals), there’s a double standard in the medical community. “Women’s sexual problems aren’t seen as valid, or are assumed to be in their heads so there’s no physical basis for the problem.” And when drugs for women are analyzed by male standards (like the ability to get an erection and have penetrative sex), it’s more difficult to prove that they work. While many believe that libido simply wanes as we age, Lindau’s research shows that’s not the case. Instead, she says, the biggest factors influencing a woman’s sexual enjoyment are her overall health and access to a healthy partner. “In my practice, libido concerns are very common and we are successful when we treat other conditions like sleep, pain, and problems in the intimate relationships,” Lindau says. So while we wait for that little pink pill, our best bet for a life of great sex is to take care of ourselves and our relationships. Read more articles from Marjie online at makeitbetter.net/SATS.

B Y DAV I D I A N R O S E N , M D WHAT’S HELPED HUMANITY GET BY these past 2 million years—other than our good looks and opposable thumbs—is our ingenuity. We observe our chaotic world and organize the data in manageable “boxes” that we construct. Unfortunately, it can be easy to box yourself in during the process. As a physician, I’m routinely reminded that age is just a number. It’s more about attitude and fortitude than the magnitude of your age. Sure, we can trudge along a linear path, but what makes things interesting is being able to transcend, to think outside the box, or—better still—to realize that there is no box. Patients who see me regarding nagging varicose and spider veins range in age from their 20s to 90s. When I see patients during their hour-long initial consultation I go past the “number” and straight to key factors such as overall health, mobility and activity. In addition, an ultrasound is frequently performed to assess for any underlying issues that need to be addressed before going after surface varicose and spider veins. Once patients are deemed ideal candidates for treatment, the process and results are age-independent: • All treatments are performed in my comfortable office setting • Minimal, if any, local anesthetic is required, even for treating underlying issues • You can drive yourself to and from treatments without issue • There is no downtime; most routine activities and work can be resumed immediately after treatments • Many treatments may be covered by commercial insurance and Medicare The last point comes as a surprise to many of my patients. Keep in mind: coverage, when possible, may take 2 or 3 months to achieve. This is why it is so important
to seek consultation sooner rather than later to be able to embark on treatments during this deductible year. We do all the legwork (pun-intended!), which includes working on your behalf to get insurance approvals. Speaking of thinking outside the box, not only is Rosen Vein Care about state-of-the-art treatments such as Endovenous Laser Ablation and Clarivein®, but I’m ready to take your reading experience to the next level, too! I’d like us to transcend outside the “box” of this page and have you experience the Rosen Vein Care difference for yourself. If you have a smart phone and a pinch of curiosity, let’s have some good, clean, nerdy fun! You may have seen those odd-looking codes like the ones below on products or boarding passes. If you always wondered what they’re about but were afraid to ask, fear no more. Just go to your app store (iPhone or Android) and download the app called “QR Code Reader” by Scan (it should be free). Once it downloads, fire up the app, point the screen at any code and hit the scan button. You will then be transported to where no magazine reader has gone before. Each code takes you to a different place. No worries to those reading this on the web/mobile version of Make It Better; just click the link below each code to “transcend”:

THE SPICE OF LIFE: MARIGOLD MAISON BRINGS UPSCALE INDIAN CUISINE TO BANNOCKBURN BY JULIE CHERNOFF
SPICE-FORWARD COCKTAILS
There are four spice-forward cocktails ($11) to start your meal, including the Marigold Sher (made with St. George California Citrus Vodka, ginger beer and Thai bitters) and The Finer Things (Ophir Oriental Spiced Gin, saffron bitters, lemon juice and sparkling wine). They perfectly complement the “Street Food” offerings, little snacks that are often served from carts in Indian cities. Try the Gol Guppa ($7), which are crispy whole-wheat puffs served with potato-chickpea mixture and a small pitcher of spice water. Break a hole in the top of a puff, fill it with chickpeas, and pour in a bit of the liquid. Pop it in your mouth and eat in one bite. Food can be fun, you know. It’s allowed.

We loved the Masala Dosa ($12), an enormous paper-thin lentil and rice flour pancake curled around a filling of potato and onion. This South Indian specialty is served with a lovely coconut chutney and sambar, a brothy lentil dish; break off a piece of the dosa, scoop up a bit of potato, dredge it in the sambar and eat it with a little coconut chutney. Nom nom nom. (If you’re looking for dosa in the city, go immediately to Udupi Palace on Devon.) The Seared Eggplant ($8) was a big slab of pressed and grilled eggplant brushed with tamarind sauce, but the advertised chipotle-mango aioli was AWOL. The texture was off-putting; I wouldn’t order it again.
WORKING THE TANDOOR
Tandoor specialties get pride of place—easy to see why when the Lamb Chops ($22 for three nice-sized chops) are cooked to medium-rare perfection, although a wee bit on the salty side. Chicken Tikka Masala ($16) arrives in a small copper casserole dish, the tandoori-roasted meat bathed in a creamy sauce of tomato and cashew paste, seasoned with fenugreek—just right folded into a bit of tandoor-baked Naan flat bread ($3) and

Bannockburn isn’t exactly on my destination restaurant radar, but now that I’ve been to Marigold Maison, I might have to adjust my thinking. Suburban restaurants in strip malls aren’t generally my cup of tea, but the warm colors —marigold orange, tomato red, saffron yellow, grass green—that accent the walls make the large space pop with life. And the bright flavors of citrus, sunny tropical fruits, and earthy and exotic spices are more than a match for the décor.

gilded with a spoonful of tangy yogurtbased Raita ($4). Another classic South Indian dish, Biryani, is done right here. The basmati rice is cooked with ginger, onions, garlic, saffron and warm spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom). The Shrimp Biryani ($20), filled with plump, tail-on crustaceans and loads of flavor, is one of the best I’ve had. Vegetarians will find much to love here. Saag Paneer ($15)—cooked puréed greens with fresh farmer’s cheese—and Dal Tadka ($7), lentils simmered with onion, tomato, chili and spices, are standards but particularly well made.
FINISH SWEET
Save room for one of the distinctly Indian desserts. Rasmalai ($7), a delicate Indian cheese dumpling in a pool of milk, rose water and pistachios, has a delicate perfume and a fascinating texture. My personal favorite is the Gajar Ka Halva ($7), a sweet Punjabi dish made from shredded carrots, milk, sugar and cashews cooked down together into a thick pudding. It’s the best sort of grown-up baby food. If you’re looking to branch out of your hamburger-pizza-spaghetti rut, give Marigold Maison a try. It’s worth the drive. Check out more reviews online. BRUNCH SPOTS
RIGHT NOW! BY JULIE CHERNOFF
Brunch is my favorite mashup. It combines breakfast and lunch, and not only is that a timesaver—let’s face it, who has time for two meals on Sunday morning when you’ve already slept through the first one?—but it’s clearly meant as an excuse for day drinking. BUT A BOTTOMLESS MIMOSA OR a fabulous Bloody Mary bar does not necessarily a great brunch make. It is, after all, about the food. Give me a fluffy omelet filled with sautéed ramps and Gruyère and a great piece of toast (preferably with mashed avocado) and I will nap afterward with a smile on my lips. Now go forth and brunch.

TEQUILA: BEYOND THE MARGARITA 3 DELICIOUS RECIPES TO SIP AND SAVOR BY JULIE CHERNOFF
Tequila just screams warm weather to me. Maybe it’s from happy beach vacations in Mexico, where tequila has been around for at least 500 years.
We reached out to some of our favorite mixologists around town and asked them to share their favorite tequila drink—as long as it wasn’t a margarita. It’s time to branch out, amigos!
LA PICOSA
Heather Behm, Union Pizzeria, Evanston Herby, citrusy, spicy…this cocktail hits all the right flavor profiles (and it works equally well with gin or vodka, by the way). Makes one cocktail. • 2 large basil leaves • 2 thinly sliced rings jalepeño chile • 1 lime wedge • 2 ounces of tequila blanco (we like the Wansas brand) • 1/2 ounce Cointreau • 1/2 ounce Rose’s lime juice • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
In a 10-ounce rocks glass, muddle together basil, jalapeño and lime. Add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and simple syrup. Stir well; fill to the rim with ice and finish with a splash of club soda.

Marcos Rivera, Libertad, Skokie Ripe strawberries really make this cocktail pop; at Libertad, they infuse the tequila with roasted serrano chiles for a bit of smoky heat. Makes one cocktail. • 2 ripe medium strawberries, hulled and halved • 1 1/2 ounces roasted serrano-chile-infused tequila* • 3/4 ounce simple syrup • 1/2 ounce lime juice

In cocktail shaker, muddle strawberries. Add chile-infused tequila, simple syrup and lime juice and ice cubes to shaker. Shake well and strain into a short rocks glass. Garnish with a serrano chile. *Roasted Serrano Chile-Infused Tequila: In a dry skillet over medium heat, char five serrano chiles (do not use oil). When the skin is blistered and blackened in spots, cut the serrano chiles lengthwise, remove seeds and stems, and immerse in a bottle of tequila. Let infuse for 12 hours, then strain. Discard peppers. Rebottle infused tequla.
EL BUHO SWIZZLE
Cody Modeer, Ward 8, Evanston Mezcal is a smoky distilled spirit from Oaxaca; it is also made from agave, but not limited to the blue agave. It pairs particularly well with grapefruit. Makes one cocktail. • 1 1/2 ounce El Buho Mezcal • 3/4 ounce Campari • 3/4 ounce passion fruit syrup • 3/4 ounce lime juice • 3/4 ounce grapefruit juice Build in a collins glass filled with crushed ice and swizzle with bar spoon or swizzle stick. Garnish with grapefruit peel and mini umbrella.
FRESA FRESCA PHOTOCOURTESY OF LIBERTAD
Distilled from the blue agave plant and produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco, tequila ranges in depth of flavor from the unaged blanco or silver tequila—perfect in both cocktails as well as savory and sweet recipes—to extra añejo, which is aged at least three years and meant to be sipped and savored. Look for tequila that is 100 percent blue agave, otherwise, it is a mixto tequila, which means that it includes sugar.

8 AUDIOBOOKS YOU WON’T WANT TO PAUSE BY LIZ LOGAN
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Frank L. Baum Unabridged: 3 hours, 52 minutes You know the story, but Oscar winner Anne Hathaway’s narration breathes new life into Dorothy’s experiences along the yellow brick road. This recording is especially great for elementary school-age kids.
One More Thing B.J. Novak | Unabridged: 6 hours 48 minutes Known for his role on “The Office,” actor B.J. Novak recently established himself as a fiction writer with this collection of funny and wild short stories, including a story about a boy who defies his parents in order to claim a $10,000 prize from a box of Frosted Flakes. Novak narrates, with help from some friends: Rainn Wilson, Lena Dunham and Mindy Kahling.
The Giver Lois Lowry | Unabridged: 4 hours, 51 minutes This YA classic, which was made into a movie last year, will captivate and haunt children and adults alike as an audiobook. At age 12, Jonas receives his life assignment determined by the Elders, which is not as simple as the jobs his friends received. His role leads him to learn disturbing secrets about his world in this dystopian coming-of-age story.
Yes, Chef Marcus Samuelsson Unabridged: 11 hours, 51 minutes Critics loved this memoir from James Beard Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson, who was born in Ethiopia, orphaned, and then adopted by a Swedish couple. Years later, thanks to passion and perseverance, he became the chef at the Swedish restaurant Aquavit in New York.
A Short History of Nearly Everything Bill Bryson Unabridged: 17 hours, 48 minutes In this book, beloved author Bill Bryson tackles the question: Why are we here? From the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, he takes on science’s toughest questions with the help of anthropologists, mathematicians and archaeologists—and his well-known sense of humor.
A Story Lately Told: Coming of Age in Ireland, London and New York Angelica Huston Unabridged: 7 hours, 28 minutes In this memoir (the first book of three), the Oscar-winner recounts in impressive detail her childhood in Ireland, teenage years in London, and early days as a model and actress in New York. Huston’s smooth alto voice is captivating as she reflects on her troubled relationship with her father, director John Huston.
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln Doris Kearns Goodwin Abridged: 9 hours, 29 minutes If you loved the movie “Lincoln,” which was partially based on this book, you’ll be enthralled by the detailed story of how Lincoln, a prairie lawyer, came to win the presidency and lead the nation through the Civil War—dealing with a feuding cabinet, hostile congressmen and insubordinate generals along the way.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Helen Fielding | Unabridged: 11 hours, 23 minutes Forget Renee Zellweger—English actress Samantha Bond (of “Downton Abbey” and the “James Bond” films) will crack you up as she narrates Bridget Jones’ latest bizarre escapades. Mark Darcy has tragically died, leaving Bridget a widow and a single mother of two who struggles to navigate dating (including an affair with a younger man), Twitter and parenting, all at once.

GUIDE TO AGING WELL A Stanford University psychologist named Kelly McGonigal gave a memorable 2013 TED Talk about stress and how it’s been proven to be harmful to health—but only when the stress-sufferer believes that stress is harmful to health. She referenced a study of 30,000 adults who were asked to report their stress levels and to share if they believed stress to be harmful to their health. Those who experienced high levels of stress and believed that stress was bad for them had a 43 percent increased risk of dying. Those in the study who experienced a lot of stress but did not view it as bad for their health fared much better, health-wise— in fact they had the lowest risk of dying of anyone in the study! What this exposes about the power of our thoughts and attitudes relates not only to stress, but to any of the beliefs we form about ourselves and the world around us—including our beliefs about the aging process.
Almost all of the experts we interviewed asserted that continuing to stay engaged in life and involved in the activities that make us happy are some of the best ways to stay sharp and fulfilled as we get older. Of course, that’s not to say that eating right and exercising both our bodies and minds don’t influence the way in which we age— they absolutely do. “The 5 Best Ways to Stay Healthy As You Age” (page 96) offers tips to this end. Keep reading and here’s to aging well! What’s your take on aging? Do you agree that “age is a state of mind”? Please share your thoughts with us on Facebook (facebook.com/makeitbettter.net) or Twitter (twitter.com/makeitbetterns) using the hashtag #AgingWell.

As one of the experts we interviewed for “Is Age Really a State of Mind?” (page 110) says: “I think a strong portion of our health is
dictated by the positive or negative messages we give ourselves.” If we tell ourselves that getting older means we’ll suffer cognitive declines, well, we just may be right.

STAY HEALTHY AS YOU AGE BY BRITNI BERG
Aging is a natural process of life—and while we may not be able to control the fact that we age, we can definitely control how we do so. To discover the best ways to stay healthy as we age, we asked doctors and research professionals who study aging to share their secrets. 1. STAY ENGAGED IN THE ACTIVITIES YOU LOVE
Who ever insisted that as we age we must give up once beloved enjoyments? Linda Waite, the Lucy Flower Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago and principle investigator in the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project (NS-

96_GTAW_stayhealthy.indd 96
HAP), suggests that as we age, we maintain involvement in activities that are important to us in order to enforce both mental and physical upkeep, as well as an improved quality of life. 2. CONNECT REGULARLY WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
While there’s not been a study about the effects of social media on aging, any component of connectivity is beneficial to the aging process. According to Dr. Aida Giachello, research professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, being a part of a social network has proven to reduce stress and increase the ability to enjoy life. Such connectivity can include spending time with children and grandchildren, or simply having lunch with an old friend—any activity that initiates communication with others. Not only does social contact make us feel good, it helps to combat loneliness and depression, which in older adults can lead to increased physical limitations. 3. GIVE BACK
Many retirees are eager to use their newfound free time as an opportunity to volunteer. When it comes to aging well, turns out these folks have the right idea! “The most gratification that a person could get is helping others [who] are more vulnerable,” Giachello says. “Any kind of activity in which you can talk to someone and smile is ultimately beneficial for your health.” Within their latest book, “The Longevity Project: Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the

“A lot of things that people like to do involve physical activity,” she says. “If you like to cook, you’re walking here, you’re chopping there, and that counts. It doesn’t have to be strenuous activity, you just want to avoid sitting for hours.” 5. DON’T WHITTLE AWAY THE HOURS… BUT DO TAKE NAPS!
Landmark Eight-Decade Study,” authors and professors of psychology Howard Friedman and Leslie Martin identify involvement with other individuals in worthwhile activities, such as helping others, as a core element in the healthy aging process. 4. DEVELOP A REGULAR EXERCISE ROUTINE
It’s no surprise that exercise is essential for staying healthy throughout the aging process. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that healthy adults 65 and older perform 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week, paired with muscle strengthening activity two times a week. Waite clarifies that regular exercise does not necessarily need to be performed in a gym.
Friedman identifies a few common pastimes that are typically not helpful to the aging process. Such activities include sitting on the beach, watching television and doing crossword puzzles—anything that includes sitting idly for long periods of time. On the other hand, napping gets a thumbs up. Giachello says that napping is a simple way to increase both energy and alertness. As we age, nutrients fail to absorb as easily within the body, which can lessen energy. Naps, paired with vitamin supplements, can help keep our bodies healthy and regulated. While there are many choices we can make in order to age healthily and increase longevity, Martin points out that there is no specific recipe. The best advice? Get out there and tackle life in a way that’s meaningful to you.

Evanston. “Three years ago, a rehab stay was double what it is today. Today, the average stay is 10 to 14 days, and some are as brief as five – depending on a person’s diagnosis and time required to heal.”
B Y S T U A R T G R E E N B L AT T THE NUMBER OF HIP AND KNEE REPLACEMENTS performed in the United States yearly is currently more than one million and is expected to surpass four million by the year 2030. If you are suffering from severe arthritis or another debilitating joint condition then chances are you will be among them. You’re not alone. Joint replacements are more common than ever among a younger demographic because of sports injuries and resulting strain and deterioration.
RECOVERY TIMES SHORTER A primary concern for patients after surgery is the recovery period. Successful patient outcomes are directly related to rehab procedures following surgery. In fact, early recovery from hip and knee replacement has become dramatically easier from a patient’s standpoint. According to Lindsay McKenzie, administrator at Alden Estates of Skokie, surgical techniques are becoming more advanced, leading to less pain and faster recovery times. “Surgical technology is becoming more advanced every day,” says McKenzie. “Surgery is less invasive, hospital stays are shorter and people heal quicker.” The objective of post-surgery rehabilitation is to get you back on your feet and home as quickly as possible. “The goal of our short-term rehab program is to have people home as quickly and safely as possible,” says Emily Hanson, administrator, Alden Estates of

BEING PROACTIVE IS SMART The decision you make about your post-surgery rehab can be just as critical as your selection of a surgeon. Here are some tips to follow about post-surgery rehabilitation: • Talk to your surgeon. Ask for opinions about their preferred rehab facilities and which ones have the best outcomes. • Ask around. Talk to family and friends about their rehab experiences and get recommendations. • Plan ahead. Many top rehab facilities can get busy so book ahead. • Visit the facility. You’ll be staying there for a week or more so find one that has good amenities like gourmet food, a place for family to visit and activities to keep you engaged.
“While getting you back on your feet and home is the objective, the trend is to make your stay like being in a five star hotel,” says McKenzie. “At Alden, we strive to set an industry standard others try to reach.”

IS AGE REALLY A
STATE OF MIND? BY MELISSA NOBLE
It seems like every year or so we read about that 80-year-old marathon runner who practices yoga daily. Or we’ll learn about a centenarian business owner who eats raw eggs and has the sass and vigor of Samantha Jones. NOT TO MENTION THE INDESTRUCTIBLE Keith Richards—a living testament to the fact you can contradict everything a doctor tells you and still live to see 70. Which raises the age-old philosophical and physiological question: How much control do we really have over feeling young? Is eternal youthfulness doled out to a few lucky souls who won a genetic lottery? Or can we all attain it? Helen Troncoso, the CEO and founder of Reinventing You, says feeling old can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
1 1 0 A U G U S T/ S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 5
110_GTAW_stateofmind.indd 110
Many people have preconceived notions of aging, and unconsciously set themselves up for feeling decrepit once they think they should. “If, for example, they believe aging brings about a major decline physically and mentally, they may perceive any ‘normal’ change as negative,” she says. “This will cause them to change their behavior to match any decline they believe they’re experiencing.” Dr. Francine Lederer, a clinical psychologist and expert on aging, life balance, life transitions and mindfulness, agrees and has observed that true spryness can be boiled down to positive thinking. “I think a strong portion of our health is dictated by the positive or negative messages we give ourselves,” she says, adding that deep friendships do wonders for both the mind and body. “Connections, connections, connections,” she says. “I can’t speak enough about the importance of surrounding yourself with people you trust and truly feel comfortable with. Research shows that the people who live the longest come from the poorest countries like Vietnam or Columbia. It’s having a sense of community that prolongs our life.” While having a Scrabble partner in the nursing home is wonderful and all, it isn’t everything. Preserving one’s youth is a delicate mix of togetherness and alone time. Dr. Ralph Diner, a medical psychologist, stresses the importance of being “in the flow.” Even going so far as to hypothesize that “mindfulness” can halt aging. But what does that mean, exactly? How does one practice “being present”? “Staying present is about being in the here and now,” he says. To be in the flow, he says, one must be absorbed in an activity they love: art, writing, gardening, having sex, meditating, yoga—anything to get you in a trancelike state. “It’s to be in a timeless, eternal moment. Free of pain,” he says. “That results in the pumping of blissful chemistry, which is competitive to pain, depression and the process of aging.” So at its core, is the fountain of youth just distraction in disguise? Is the secret to staying young as simple as diverting attention from the inevitable passing of the years? In short, yes. “Staying in the present time can allow one the ability to focus on life right now as opposed to what’s to come,” says Lederer. “I think people who are ageless are those who tend to stay busy and focused on achieving goals. They tend to be driven by accomplishments and seeing things through.”

ELDERLY GET A DOSE OF THE
VERY BEST MEDICINE BY LISA STEIN
Teri McEvoy has just been told she is better than a furry Prozac, and she couldn’t be happier. The veteran Chicago actress stands in the middle of a circle of silver-haired improv students who are still laughing over a shared joke and telling her what they’ve learned in the last hour. BY “FURRY PROZAC,” CLASS MEMBER Cynthia Wilcox refers not to the latest antidepressant or trendy sensory therapy, but to the mood-raising effect of McEvoy’s interactive improv classes, which she says make her even happier than seeing a friendly, tail-wagging dog. “One thing I like about this class is that no one is judging anyone,” says Anne Schultz, who has attended McE-

112_GTAW_improv.indd 112
voy’s workshops at The Breakers retirement home in Chicago for years. “That comes from you as a teacher.” Many of McEvoy’s students share that feeling. “The laughing here is non-stop,” says Kenn Piotrowski, who lives at Friendship Village in Schaumburg. “Tonight I’ll be telling all my friends about what we did today. Teri removes our inhibitions so that we just have fun.” “You will hear laughter roaring from this room,” says Jeannette Magdaleno, a coordinator at Friendship Village. “There’s nothing else like this out there that I’ve heard about. People didn’t understand what the class was about at first, but then it spread word-of-mouth. Now if a class is canceled, I hear about it.” “Improve-isation,” as McEvoy calls her workshops, combines memory and word games, storytelling, and improvised scenarios that challenge people to think on their feet. “The seniors I work with are so creative and quick. They’re funny, and they like to have fun,” McEvoy says. A Second City-trained comedian and actor, McEvoy made her living for over 20 years in voiceover and commercial work, as well as in TV shows and films. She came up with the idea of senior improv after using word games to cheer up her own mother during an illness several years ago. McEvoy adapted some of her favorite improv exercises to a senior audience, and pitched the idea to senior communities near her home in Evanston. She now teaches at more than a dozen centers across the North Shore, Chicago and western suburbs. McEvoy begins each class with an exercise, such as a tongue twister (“epitome of femininity” and “Greek grapes” are some favorites) designed to loosen tongues and get creative juices flowing. She then moves onto longer scenarios, making sure everyone stays involved and talking, cracking jokes as she walks around the room. For example, she divided the class at Friendship Village into small groups and told them they would teach a class on a topic of their choosing. “I’m starting a school and it’s called Friendship University. But we won’t use the initials for this one.” The class was quiet for a second as the joke sank in, then they all burst out laughing. McEvoy went on. “So what I want you to do is have fun with this. I had someone this week say, ‘I don’t know anything about this subject.’ I know—that’s what makes it better. That’s when the improv comes into play. That’s when you’re using your creativity.”

Karl Rosengren, a developmental psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says that current research confirms the effectiveness of McEvoy’s approach. “[Teri] is doing a number of things that are really good. Her classes involve working in a social group, and one of the advantages of that is it keeps people engaged. Many interventions with older adults fail because of a lack of a social component.” In addition to social and emotional boosts, Rosengren says, McEvoy’s classes offer cognitive benefits. “You want to be doing things that require flexibility in your thinking and that make you do novel things. Improv taps into behaviors that seem to promote cognitive function in older adults. It gets them to use their minds in flexible ways. What you don’t want to do is the same old, same old. That’s why learning a second language or a new instrument is better than playing Sudoku over and over.” Regardless of the myriad benefits, McEvoy’s students simply enjoy the chance to let loose, share jokes, be listened to and appreciate the absurdity of the human condition, no matter what their age. “Nobody tries to be funny here,” Schultz says. “It’s funny just to be human.”

The Posse Foundation places students in supportive, multicultural teams—“Posses”—of 10 students to attend college together and increase their chances of success. The organization identifies students through the Dynamic Assessment Process (DAP), a unique, threeround interview process for selecting Posse Scholars. The first round consists of a group interview in which up to 100 high school students participate in a series of interactive, engaging activities. Volunteers help observe students and assess their leadership, communication and teamwork. DAP volunteers are required to attend a onehour training to learn “How to Spot a Posse Scholar.” Once you have completed the DAP training, you can choose one or more evenings to participate.

BREAKING BARRIERS
A BLIND SKOKIE WOMAN’S DISABILITY IS NO MATCH FOR HER DRIVE BY MAUR A FL AHERT Y
A rickety set of stairs leads to the basement of the Evanston Art Center on Sheridan Road, where laughter and loud chatter fill the ceramics studio. It’s Tuesday morning, and “Intermediate/Advanced Ceramics,” led by David Todd Trost, is in full swing. Many of the 10 or so students present have been in ceramics classes together and friends for the past nine years.
Not here.
“We all know a lot about each other’s lives,” says student Michelle Friedman. “We have a nice camaraderie.”
“What do you say, David?” pipes in Betsey Fiddler, a classmate who also happens to be Friedman’s neighbor. “That Dana is the ‘seeing-eye’ potter?’” Everyone laughs warmly.
Mother of three and grandmother of five, Friedman is one of the self-proclaimed louder, more outspoken individuals in the group. The Art Center is a place where she says she feels completely accepted. And for Friedman, this has not always been the case. For the past 22 years, Friedman has been completely blind, and she has been visually impaired since she was 8 years old. She says sometimes her disability makes people uncomfortable or unsure of how to behave around her.

“I believe it’s important to laugh at myself and this group is really good at helping me [do that],” Friedman says. She first tried making ceramics when a friend dragged her to the EAC and insisted it was something they could do together. Before these classes, Friedman says she hadn’t done anything creative in her life. “The first teacher was a little…Dana, what would you say?” asks Friedman. “Oh, overwhelmed,” says Dana Shearin. Petite and relaxed, Shearin now serves as Friedman’s aid during ceramics class. Shearin was Friedman’s second teacher at the Art Center, and

From Bill Flaherty, 88, a priest at Faith Hope and Charity, to Friedman, 57, who spent years involved with her synagogue in Skokie, the group is a melting pot of backgrounds, ages and faiths drawn to this basement room by their common love of pottery.
“There [are] no boundaries in this group and that’s the way I like it,” Friedman says.

the two ended up working extremely well together. When Shearin decided to leave her teaching position, the Art Center asked if she would stay on as Friedman’s personal aid. The ladies have been working together now for nearly eight years. The Art Center pays Shearin for her assistance, for which Friedman says she is so grateful. “They have made it very easy for me to take classes,” Friedman says. “And believe me, I’m not an artist so my stuff is not artist quality, but they’ve been very good about making it accessible to me by giving me Dana.” Her statement about “not being an artist” seems unbelievable when looking at the delicate tea set she is making for her granddaughters; her intricate platter ready to be fired on the kiln or her set of recently glazed soft blue mugs. They appear far from amateur, especially when you consider that Friedman creates them exclusively by touch. Friedman occasionally donates her products to fundraisers. She spent years involved with charitable organizations, her synagogue, and served as the president of her children’s school
board for a time. She says that being as active as she is, she gets to show the world that a disabled person is as capable as anyone else. “People know that Tuesday mornings are sacrosanct for me,” Friedman says. “It’s my ceramics time and I can only do it because of Dana and because of the Evanston Art Center.” Editor’s Note: Maura wrote this story just before the Evanston Art Center moved to its new location at 1717 Central Street in June.

Friedman published a children’s book in 2013 called “Close Your Eyes” as a vehicle for discussing disability awareness in grammar schools. The book tells the story of a young blind girl as she experiences the world. Friedman hopes to focus increasingly on disability awareness but has no plans to slow down her ceramics classes.
