a warm welcome As the calendar turns to September, the air cools and the kids head back to school, it’s time to start thinking about your child’s future education. Is a private school a possibility? If so, now is when you’ll want to consider it for the next academic year. In our seventh annual Bay Area Private School Guide, we present resources and information to help you find the ideal fit. Our cover stories make sense out of the alphabet soup of accreditations, examine the differences between school affiliations and ask when it might (or might not) make sense to hold your little one back from starting kindergarten or first grade. We also present a list and particulars on more than 150 private schools in San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties. This comprehensive guide provides all the tools you need to evaluate your options for the 2017–2018 school year.

What’s in a Letter
A LOOK AT SCHOOL ACCREDITATION ORGANIZATIONS AND WHY THE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE IMPORTANT.
C
BY CARRIE KIRBY AIS, NAIS, NCEA, WASC — a list of private schools can look like a bowl of alphabet soup to the uninitiated. What do all these letters mean? Most of them represent the organization that accredited the school — the folks who examined the school to make sure it meets standards. The accreditation process is a lot like peer review for a scientific paper: educators or administrators from outside the school come in to audit how the school functions and suggest ways it could improve. Here’s a look at the most common accrediting bodies evaluating Bay Area schools and what they demand of institutions before they give their seal of approval. While accreditation is optional under California law, it’s a good idea for parents to make sure their school of choice has been examined by at least one recognized accrediting organization. Besides assuring parents that the school they’re enrolling their child in meets standards and goals set forth in the organization’s guidelines, accreditation also ensures that the academic credits will transfer if your child changes schools. Schools may be accredited by more than one organization. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation is one of the most common here

in the Bay Area. Schools with WASC accreditation include Fusion Academy Marin, Our Lady of Loretto and Brandeis Marin. WASC is one of six regional accrediting agencies in the United States, and its accrediting commission is composed of representatives from educational organizations such as the Association of California School Administrators and the California Teachers Association. WASC advocates a studentcentered approach and encourages staff to improve through continuing education. The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), formed in 1962, created a Commission on Accreditation in 2001. Bay Area schools accredited by NAIS include The Branson School, Marin Country Day School and Mark Day School. NAIS’s accreditation process involves both a school visit and in-depth self-study on the part of the school to make sure it’s adhering to standards and that it is continually improving. “The standards address all areas of school life, including the following: mission, governance, finance, program, community of the school, administration, development, admissions, personnel, health and safety, facilities, student services, school culture and residential life (where applicable),” the NAIS website says.

Formed in 1941 by educators concerned that not all private schools were producing college-ready graduates, the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) today has 219 member schools, just under half of them in Northern California. Most have completed the CAIS accreditation process, but a few are still working on it. In the Bay Area, CAISaccredited schools include Mill Valley’s Marin Horizon School and San Anselmo’s San Domenico School. CAIS is devoted to maintaining “standards without standardization,” noting on its website, “Because each school community is unique, the accreditation process permits the school to use considerable flexibility in its approach to the self-study yet still be linked to sound components of a quality self-assessment.” More so than with other kinds of schools, the letters that come after the name of your Montessori school can tell you what philosophy the school likely embraces. The Association Montessori Internationale/USA (AMI) is the domestic branch of the original organization founded by Maria Montessori; schools that list AMI recognition cleave closely to Montessori’s original methods, and every classroom has a head teacher trained by the organization. In the Bay Area, AMI/US recognizes Corte Madera’s Marin Montessori School and San Rafael’s Montessori de Terra Linda School. Schools accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS), formed in 1960, may have teachers trained by a number of Montessori organizations. These schools have more freedom to supplement Dr. Montessori’s methods with other resources and ideas — although they still must maintain Montessori practices such as self-directed learning based on kids choosing, using and then putting away materials. In the Bay Area, AMS-accredited schools

The Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) is the main organization accrediting Bay Area Catholic schools, including Santa Rosa’s Cardinal Newman, San Anselmo’s St. Anselm School and Larkspur’s St. Patrick School. WCEA’s directors and members include representatives from archdioceses and dioceses all over the West, and it accredits both elementary and secondary schools to ensure they are performing well on two fronts: faith formation and educational excellence. You may also see the letters NCEA listed with a Catholic school’s name; they stand for National Catholic Educational Association, which is a membership group but not an accrediting body. m

Know Your Schools CHOOSING THE RIGHT EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR YOUR CHILD BEGINS WITH PINPOINTING THE DIFFERENCES. BY CARRIE KIRBY
W
hen you’re selecting a private school, it helps to narrow the field by deciding what kind of school you want your child to attend. The following categories are not mutually exclusive; some schools may fit into two or more, such as St. Helena Montessori, a Montessori school that includes Catholic teachings. Even so, knowing how the main types of schools are defined will help you advance your search.
Independent Schools These schools are governed by their own board. Some are secular, while others have a religious mission but are not part of or dependent on a specific church or temple. Independent schools in Marin County include Corte Madera’s Marin Country Day School, Mill Valley’s Marin Horizon School and San Rafael’s Marin Academy. Catholic Schools Although there are schools affiliated with most every religion, the Catholic school system is such a major institution — enrolling 38 percent of all private school students nationwide, according to the National Center for Education Statistics — that it deserves its own category. A Catholic school may be established and supported by a parish, a diocese or a private order such as the Jesuits or Franciscans. Not all families who choose Catholic schools subscribe to the faith; nationwide, 17 percent of their students are nonCatholic, according to the National Catholic Education Association. Catholic schools in Marin include Kentfield’s Marin Catholic High School, Novato’s Our Lady of Loretto School and Tiburon’s Saint Hilary School.
Non-Catholic Religious Schools If you add up all the other types of religious schools — conservative Christian, Jewish, Lutheran, Seventh Day Adventists, Quaker and others — they enroll about as many students as Catholic schools do, nationwide. Non-Catholic religious schools in Marin include San Rafael’s Brandeis Marin (Jewish) and Good Shepherd Lutheran School and Marin Christian Academy, both in Novato. Montessori Schools This approach to education has been around for more than a century, but it’s enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent decades as parents increasingly embrace Montessori’s focus on the whole child, with independent activities and materials that appeal to kids’ senses. The North American Montessori Teachers Association estimates there are about 4,500 Montessori schools in the United States, most of them private. Maria Montessori originally developed her teaching philosophy for preschoolers, and the majority of Montessori schools still focus on early childhood education. But some include elementary and even secondary grade levels. Montessori schools in Marin include Corte Madera’s Marin Montessori School and San Rafael’s Montessori de Terra Linda School. Waldorf Schools Less common than other private school models, with only about 150 schools in North America according to Waldorf Answers, this is nonetheless an attractive educational philosophy to many progressive parents. Waldorf is sometimes lumped with Montessori since both allow students to move beyond the desks and worksheets of today’s mainstream classroom. However, Waldorf schools in practice are pretty different from Montessori. Students in a Waldorf school may spend more time creating things, whether it’s artwork or knitting with wool. Another distinguishing factor: Waldorf schools don’t teach academics until first grade. Waldorf schools in Marin include Mill Valley’s Greenwood School and Fairfax’s WISE Academy, a Waldorf-inspired charter school. For more on how Waldorf differs, see blog.sgws. org/waldorf-vs-montessori. m

Hold Back or Push Forward HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS READY. BY CARRIE KIRBY
A
melia turned 6 this summer, but she’s not starting first grade this fall. Instead, her Woodacre parents have decided to enroll her in a second year of kindergarten. She won’t be the oldest child there; Amelia will even have one classmate who turns 7 before the school year ends. Whether by keeping kids in kindergarten for two years or by delaying the start of kindergarten beyond the traditional starting age of 5, putting off the day children must face the rigors of modern elementary school is a national trend that educational consultant Nancy Cappelloni estimates is more common in competitive Marin than in other places. A lot of parents whose children have summer and spring birthdays come to her for help deciding if they should “redshirt” their kids. Cappelloni, a former kindergarten teacher and author of the book Kindergarten Readiness, says there is no catchall answer to this question. “On an individual basis, we have to look at the pros and cons of holding the child back,” Cappelloni says. Last year, knowing that Amelia would turn 5 less than two months before the age cutoff, her mother Anne considered enrolling her daughter in kindergarten at their local public school. Anne did some research and saw that kindergarten and the early grades at mainstream schools had become much more academic than in years past, with homework and testing, and not much playtime. “There seemed to be no reason to rush Amelia into that type of environment,” she says. Instead, Anne decided to enroll her in a Waldorf school, where two years of kindergarten is traditional. Amelia will turn 6 just before starting her second year of kindergarten, then enter first grade as a 7-year-old. Parents cite a number of reasons for giving their kids “the gift of time.” A Mill Valley dad, Daniel, says his family waited a year to enroll their son in kindergarten, whose birthday fell shortly after the cutoff, because “he didn’t seem like he was ready.” Now his son is 9 and going into fourth grade. “Each year we are reminded that it was the right decision, as he is doing well and is academically and socially on par with the kids in his grade,” Daniel says. Some parents look far beyond the kindergarten year when making the decision. Teacher Sonya Evans of San Anselmo thought about whether she wanted her daughter to be the youngest in her peer group when the socially

01-08 PSG.EDIT.0916.indd 8
“rugged” middle school years began. She even took into account how old her daughter would be heading off to college and decided the girl would benefit from an extra year of family time first. It’s natural for parents to worry if their child will be the youngest in their grade, and many feel holding kids back can be “one more tool or strategy that they ... might be able to employ to help their kid get an extra edge,” Cappelloni says. But, she warns, “You don’t want to automatically do it.” There are drawbacks to delaying school enrollment. In fact, the National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends against the practice, arguing that
"Each year we are reminded that it was the right decision, as he is doing well and is academically and socially on par with the kids in his grade." kindergartens and grade schools should welcome all eligible children no matter how “ready” they are. “The gift of time that many parents have been persuaded to give children by delaying school entry can result instead in denying them opportunities for cognitive growth through social interaction with their age-mates. It also implies that children have failed at school even before they begin,” the NAEYC warns. The association cites research showing that kids who start school late might do better at first, but lose any such advantage by the end of elementary school. The delay also creates a challenge for teachers by widening the age range in the class. But perhaps the biggest problem to consider, Cappelloni says, is this: “What are you going to do with them that year?” Families who opt not to enroll 5-year-olds in kindergarten can send them to another year of preschool, but not only can that be a financial strain, it might be boring for the child. Programs that were great for 3- and 4-yearolds may not quench every 5-year-old’s thirst for knowledge, Cappelloni warns: “Three years of preschool is probably enough.” m
