Why a guide? Whether you’ve lived here for decades or are just visiting for a week, there is always something new to discover. Even we at Marin Magazine are constantly finding new and exciting ways to enjoy the county, and are continually renewing our appreciation of this truly unique corner of the planet. With 520,000 square miles (80 percent of it open space) surrounded mostly by the ocean or bay, Marin is a recreational heaven. In these 48 pages we present vetted tips on all the best parts of any summer, including hiking, biking, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, exploring, relaxing and, of course, eating. For the foodies we’ve literally mapped out the farms and ranches of West Marin open to the public that produce the fresh and organic goods the county is famous for. We’ve done the thinking and planning for you — you just need an appetite, a sense of adventure and possibly a cooler. Craving the coast? Point Reyes National Seashore has 80 miles of shoreline to explore, and this doesn’t include 3.5-miles of Stinson Beach, which is particularly popular on a sunny day. Our guide will help you figure out which beach suits your needs (there’s even a beach for those who don’t want to wear a suit at all). And then there’s the mountain. Mount Tamalpais provides many opportunities to get moving, be inspired and appreciate the natural wonder (and views) of Marin. We’ve created the ultimate map to help you explore the mountain in whichever way you choose — stroll, hike or bike, or drive to the top for a fresh perspective. So enjoy the guide and all that it offers, and let us know how your summer in Marin is going by hashtagging your Instagram and Twitter photos #inmarin. We’ll feature some favorites on marinmagazine.com. See you on the trails. The Editors of Marin Magazine

LAND
• Search for Sea Life
Agate Beach Park, Bolinas Awash with tide pools, Agate Beach boasts a walkable two miles during low tide with plenty of spots to watch whales, sea lions, shorebirds and other wildlife. Named after the semiprecious stones found in the sand, Agate is also a great place for a picnic.
• Catch a Wave
Bolinas Beach, Bolinas Celebrated for its light rolling waves, Bolinas Beach is an ideal learn-to-surf spot and is also great for swimming and rock collecting at the southern edge. Stand-up paddleboard and surfboard rentals are available at 2 Mile Surf Shop, on the road to the beach.
• Leave the Clothes Behind
Looking for a getaway in the sand and surf? Marin County has some of the best beaches, be they county, state or on National Park Service land. Grab your towel, some sunscreen and possibly a jacket and head out for some waterside fun.
• It Does a Body Good
Stinson Beach, Stinson Beach Three-and-a-half miles of white sandy shore and crashing waves make this spot popular for bodysurfing year-round. On warm days, get there early — traffic builds up thick and quick.
• For the Birds
• Toddlers in Tow
• For the Family and the Gear
• Family Fun
• Fido Friendly
• Bring the Whole Gang
Limantour Beach, Inverness Between Drakes Bay and an estuary sits this white sandy beach with more than two miles of rolling sand dunes and bountiful birdlife. Waves are on the calm side here due to the beach’s south-facing location, yet the current can be strong.
Heart’s Desire Beach, Inverness The sheltered cove with clean white sand, still waters and light wind is favored by families. A peaceful place to listen to the water lap against the shore or read on the warm sand, the beach offers convenient drive-up access and a safe, relaxed environment.
Schoonmaker Beach, Sausalito With its shallow, calm water, this whitesand beach is the perfect place for families with young children. Nestled in the heart of Schoonmaker Marina, it’s also an ideal launching point for kayakers and paddleboarders. Limited parking.
Rodeo Beach, Sausalito Three miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, this dark pebble beach is at the western-most edge of the Marin Headlands. It’s a popular dog-friendly spot where canines are welcome either on a leash or under voice control.
Muir Beach, Muir Beach If you are setting up for a full day on the sand, you will love this beach’s close-by parking. The crescent-shaped cove features a lagoon and sandy beach. The waves are good for bodyboarders and kayakers (watch for strong currents), and fish are plentiful.
McNears Beach, San Rafael A large park with lots of amenities and activities, McNears is great for big gatherings. It sits in a sheltered cove in a 55-acre park, with a narrow bayside beach. The fishing pier is popular for catching striped bass, halibut and crab.
DEBRA TARRANT
Marin’s Best Beaches
Red Rock Beach, Stinson Beach Accessible via a steep trail, Red Rock is a quarter-mile curve of sandy shore tucked into a wind-protected cove between Muir and Stinson. Regarded as the friendliest Bay Area nude beach, this is a social place and can be crowded on weekends.

Let the Dogs Out
LAND
There are tens of thousands of acres, including 130 miles of trails, that are Fido friendly here in Marin, according to the canine travel resource dogtrekker.com. Founder Dave Kendrick of San Rafael says access to wilderness is one of the factors that sold him and his wife, Roxanne, on living here. “There is no simple answer to where dogs are allowed,” he says, “and as many of us have learned, a $50 ticket can be a painful reminder that you have broken the law.” Marin’s public space is governed by four entities: The state parks system and GGNRA allow partial access to trails, while the MMWD and MCOSD both allow dogs on leash on all their public lands. Here are Kendrick’s three top spots for dogs. 1 BLITHEDALE SUMMIT Accessed from the top of Glen Drive in Mill Valley, it’s the highest point you can legally take dogs up on Mount Tamalpais. 6.6 miles.
but you can’t beat the views; you might even see some turtles basking in the sun. Watch out for newts on the trail. 4.4 miles.
2 PHOENIX LAKE TRAIL Start at the end of Lagunitas Road in Ross in the Phoenix Lake parking lot. You can add three to five more miles by walking around Phoenix Lake and heading up to Bon Tempe Lake and Lake Lagunitas. Dogs need to stay on leash,
3 BOLINAS RIDGE You need to be mindful of staying on the trail and keeping your dogs on leash, since not all the land is dog friendly and the trail is popular with bikers — but it’s worth the effort for the views of Tomales Bay and the Pacific Ocean. 10.5 miles.

confident enough to get out into the lineup, make sure you learn surf etiquette, for your safety and the safety and happiness of others.
Best starter board? Foam boards are the best. Next step would be a longboard and with progression the boards can get smaller.
Ways to practice balance? I love Indo Boarding. Also, skateboarding and Bosu balls at the gym are great for balance training.
Is boogie boarding a good way to start with getting comfortable? Absolutely; boogie boarding and bodysurfing are both great.
Favorite break in Marin? It really depends on the swell, tides, weather — I surf Fort Cronkhite (main photo) most often, out of convenience and for the beauty.
How about starting in the white wash? Yes, the white wash at Stinson or Pacifica is a great way to get started. Once you feel comfortable and
Favorite Bay Area surf spot? Ocean Beach.
BASIC SURF ETIQUETTE These tips, collected from surfline.com and Australia’s Surfrider Foundation, will keep you safe and happy on the waves.
• Don’t drop in on another surfer. • Stay out of the way of other riders when paddling through the break. • Take turns. • Always help another surfer in trouble. • Give respect to get respect (especially if you’re not at your local break). • Be responsible for your equipment and respectful of others’. • Relax, have fun and enjoy surfing.

Those hoping to create their own endless summer here in Marin may want to take the advice of Bianca Valenti. Why? Valenti knows the topic: she’s the only female pro surfer in the Bay Area and was recently crowned the first female Big Wave World Tour champion. More than just a wave-rider, she also just opened Valenti and Co., an Italian restaurant in San Anselmo, with her dad, a chef.

Surrounded as we are by the ocean and bay here in Marin, it’s no wonder sailing, kayaking and now stand-up paddleboarding are so popular. For those who don’t have their own equipment (or a place to store it), we have plenty of businesses ready to cater to your needs — in fact, many allow you to just show up and get on the water.
How They Got Afloat • Dial a Dock
101 Surf Sports, San Rafael For me, the valet service at 101 Surf Sports is the difference between paddling and not paddling. I don’t have to lug or load my board from home to work to the water. I simply call them a few minutes before I arrive and they have my (stored) board ready to go when I get there. When I finish my paddle, they even take my board out of the water, wash it off and put it away. Because it’s so easy, I’m able to paddle 4–5 days a week. MADELINE KING, OAKLAND
• My Captain
Club Nautique Sailing School, Sausalito For years I stared out at the bay watching sailboats silently harnessing the wind to effortlessly propel across the water. I’ve
always loved the outdoors but didn’t grow up sailing and didn’t have a friend with a boat. Hence, I followed Club Nautique’s U.S. Sailing–sanctioned program and was able to charter a 40-plus-foot boat within just a few months. I can now host groups of friends and family for sailing trips on the bay. I should have done this long ago. JASON KREUZIGER, SAN FRANCISCO
• Water Maximizer
Sea Trek, Sausalito My wife and I have been renting kayaks at Sea Trek for nearly a decade. As we put on our gear, the staff will bring the kayak to the water. Nothing could be simpler. When we finish, we just leave the boat, check out and head home. This allows us to maximize our time on the water enjoying the remarkable beauty of Sausalito — it’s what we enjoy. In a land of great food and plenty of open space, the art of the picnic is something many of us work on perfecting. While there are many ways to enjoy a meal alfresco here in Marin, we’ve asked six popular awardwinning chefs to reveal their favorite picnic pastimes. 1 Justin Everett, executive chef of Murray Circle at Cavallo Point for the past three years, enjoys relaxing with his family and friends at Heart’s Desire Beach in Inverness. WHAT We’ll grab oysters along the way. Stop at Perry’s Deli; they’ve expanded recently and carry everything one needs for a picnic. We always get something from Cowgirl Creamery to snack on as I barbecue oysters. WHERE Heart’s Desire Beach is definitely

one of our favorites because the shallow water is great for my kids — they can’t get into too much trouble — and there are plenty of picnic tables and barbecues. 2 Jared Rodgers has been heading up the kitchen at Picco Restaurant in Larkspur for the past few years. When he is not cooking or sleeping, you’ll find him on the trails of Marin. WHAT My go-to would have to be bread from PANoRAMA bakery that I buy at the market (love the Napa Valley, Rusticana and Rosemary). The next items would be local king salmon that I hot smoke and summer cucumbers from the market with a little bit of tarragon aioli. WHERE The cliffs above RCA Beach in Bolinas — I love Bolinas because it is funky and fun. 3 Joanne Weir leads the kitchen at Copita in Sausalito and keeps busy with her own cooking show and cookbook line. WHAT I love McEvoy Ranch travel-size
extra-virgin olive oil. It’s perfect for the picnic basket. It is so fresh and grassy and goes with everything. WHERE The best view and picnic area on a sunny day is on the grass near the ferry landing in Tiburon. We love to see the boats and the city from this vantage point. 4 Michael Mina, an award-winning chef and restaurateur, lives in West Marin with his family. He currently oversees many restaurants all over the country. WHAT Oysters at Tomales Bay Oyster Company or Hog Island. WHERE We go straight to the source at either Highway 1 location. Grab a table, buy a bag of fresh-from-the-bay oysters — it’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon. 5 Robert Price is the executive chef at Marin favorites Buckeye Roadhouse, Bungalow 44 and Bar Bocce. He tries to join his wife, an avid hiker, when he can, especially if there’s a full moon involved. WHAT We pick up sandwiches at Blue Barn
Gourmet in Corte Madera (they source their ingredients locally) — a favorite these days is the Buffalo Blue grilled chicken sandwich — and a couple bottles of wine. WHERE We enjoy taking Tennessee Valley Road all the way to the beach. Find a rock, watch the sunset or the moonrise; you’ll usually be alone. Amazing. 6 Gordon Drysdale, executive chef and partner at Mill Valley’s Sweetwater Music Hall, has stayed on as a consultant and head of “haute stoner” cuisine. WHAT We bring crispy fruits and veggies (Nantes carrots, whole sliced fennel bulbs, radishes, apples, etc.), a GMO-free granola that we make, a little buffalo jerky, and then a 70 percent chocolate. A CamelBak filled with ice water rounds out the experience and you’re on your way. WHERE A favorite for us is Pantoll. We park at the ranger station, hike down through the redwoods and stop at a flat, rocky spot right on top of the stream. It’s shady and the stream is lovely — totally peaceful.
Rediscover the avant-garde artists of 19th-century France with a selection of intimately scaled Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings whose charm and fluency invite close scrutiny. This celebration of fleeting moments and personal places includes still lifes, portraits, and landscapes by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Morisot, Degas, Pissarro, and Van Gogh.
