Mak Gators

The Gators swim season is in full swing! We have 30 enthusiastic swimmers this year and we are always looking to grow our team! Next summer, consider joining this really great community. It’s a meaningful way to be a part of the Maketewah family. The Gators have several first time swimmers who have competed in meets in both individual and relay races and have earned a variety of colorful ribbons :) We also have several veteran swimmers who have set and accomplished some fun goals both individual and team based! Everyone plans to finish strong... Go Gators!

What’s your favorite part about working at Mak? I enjoy watching the memberships’ golf games develop, running tournaments, and of course playing the exceptional golf course I have the privilege of working at. I also enjoy following our many low digit handicaps (and staff) compete in USGA, GCGA, PGA, AJGA, etc. qualifiers throughout the country. Having Dave Bahr as a mentor both professionally, personally, and for my own golf game is an added bonus of working at Mak. To be part of a team made up of Dave Bahr, Gina Bamberger, Chad Ammer, and Adam Johnston makes working at Maketewah a tremendous experience.

Membership & Marketing Dear Members, It has been an exciting first couple of weeks in my new role at Maketewah CC! I have enjoyed meeting many of you, working with new colleagues, taking prospective members on tours, and learning more about the incredible history of this legendary course and club. In the spirit of constantly improving service to you, I will soon be inviting you, our members, to complete a quick, 6 question survey intended to obtain constructive feedback on Smoke Signals. From the survey, we will evaluate your responses and begin to evolve the platform to best meet your needs. Thank you in advance for your time in completing the survey. You will soon receive a link sent via email. Finally, if there is anything I can assist you with in getting more involved in your Club, please reach out! Yours truly, Seana Seana Hue | Membership and Marketing Director | 513.242.9200 x227 | shue@maketewah.com

A note on server wages: To be able to pay our servers fair wages far above the state’s minmum wage for tipped employees, the club uses the service charge to pay higher starting wages for service staff of Maketewah. Any gratuity added beyond the 18% goes directly to your server. So, if you have had stellar service, your server will appreciate anything extra you leave for them! Kind Regards,

Maketewah Staff

Hello Members, I wanted to reach out to all of the members I haven’t gotten a chance to talk to over the past few days and say that I am planning on leaving Maketewah in the middle of July. My girlfriend, Bri, and I have decided to make the move after she was presented with a fantastic career opportunity in Columbus. I have enjoyed my time here and will miss the great members and staff of Maketewah. Please join me on Friday the 15th in the living room so I can pour you each one last drink at the bar. We will have some apps and I would be more than happy to get you a reservation for dinner to follow. It was a joy serving all of you for the past four years.

Fitness 101 By: Paul Bodenbach MA., FAFS, FMR, GPS Competitorsedge@msn.com (859) 802-2235 Recently, our temperatures have been hotter than they have in years. As an Athletic Trainer I am compelled to revisit the importance of understanding signs of heat stress and ways to prevent it. As I’ve discussed in the past, it’s not just hydration. But, also nutrition that provides the minerals our body needs to function properly and prevent this potential problem. Signs of heat stress are headache, dizziness, profuse sweating and muscle cramps. Treatment includes cooling the person by getting them into the shade or air conditioning. Water or electrolyte drinks are needed to replace the body fluids and minerals lost through sweating. Sucking on ice cubes to help reduce the core temperature and stretching to relax muscle cramps may also be needed. More advanced conditions show physical weakness, absence of sweat, listless behavior, intense dizziness, fainting. This condition requires immediate cooling! Get them some place cool and apply cold compresses, drink cool water and seek medical attention. The next step in this scenario is heat stroke. The best means of prevention of heat illness is hydration. It should start 24 – 48 hours prior to your activity. Make certain you drink plenty of water the day prior to an outdoor activity. A minimum of 8 – 10, 12 ounce glasses of water is suggested along with a couple of electrolyte drinks. During your activity a 12 ounce bottle of water should be consumed every 20 minutes. Also, A cold towel soaked in Ice water needs to be applied to the head and neck regularly for cooling. Remember the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Unfortunately, once symptoms of heat stress begin it’s too late to prevent. If dizziness or cramping begin, one should cease the activity as more severe symptoms can come on very quickly.

From the Supertintendent’s Desk It is not hard to miss, that we are in the heart of summer in Cincinnati, as the heat & humidity are back in full force. Along with the heat and humidity of the summer, we have also experienced some severe storms come through the course. Only one major tree was lost during these storms, but the amount of debris caused by the storms has made keeping the course clean very hard. One item that I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention as we continue through the summer are the areas of brown grass that is in the fairways (four being the worst). We have a species of grass that is in the fairways called Poa Trivialis. Poa Trivialis is a grass that is found in shade mixes of turf and is used for overseeding greens in the south during the winter. This grass cannot handle the heat that we are experiencing currently and is going into dormancy. As cooler weather returns this grass will again start to green up. This is one of the many reasons why we are renovating our fairways this fall. We will be killing off all the existing grass, and seed to newer varieties of bent grass that will be able to handle the heat. This will be a great addition to the course During this month, we will be gearing up the course for the club championship. This is a big events for us, and we hope to have the course in great condition. Good luck to all those who participate. We have also just completed installing our fans around the greens on 6, 10, & 11. These fans will prove to be vital as we get into the heat of the summer. The air movement on these greens is very minimal, thus the reasons for the fans. For the most point the fans are set to run during the night, however, during days with extreme heat, and minimal air movement, the fans will be turned on during the day. These fans have been a vital part on the increased health of these greens. I hope that everyone comes out to enjoy the club and the course. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Sincerely, Ted White Golf Course Superintendent
