I’m sitting in the back garden enjoying the sun and the warm weather as I write this letter. This can only mean that summer is really here! So it’s time for MakeUp4All Summer 2010 magazine. In this issue we’ve got fascinating, myth-busting interviews from beauty PRs who have shared with us what they do, how an average day in the life of a glamorous beauty PR runs, and what they love about their jobs. This issue, you’ll read exactly what it’s like to work in beauty PR, from the PRs themselves. In this summer issue we’ve also focused on Chanel and their looks from the summer makeup collection, as well as how the celebrities are wearing the designer beauty trend. As we all know “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” © Coco Chanel And what is this summer’s Most Wanted? It’s clearly the summer of designer lipsticks! Meet e Beauty PRs So many people often wonder what is the role of PR in the “World of Beauty”, what do they do and what their typical working day looks like. It’s also interesting to hear their opinion about the on-line media. Two lovely PR girls shared their thoughts with us, please enjoy their interviews.

This includes writing press releases, event management and strategy for future Elemis launches to brainstorming creative ideas to make Elemis stand out in a competitive industry.

makeup products to use in summer? I’m loving Philosophy’s Kiss Me SPF 20 Red Lip Balm. The cool minty balm and red colouring is perfect for my skin tone. Oh and Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer and my Pro-Collagen Marine Cream are my other summer beauty essentials. Do you have a beauty trick that always works? Whenever I get a pimple I use Elemis’ Herbal Lavender Repair Mask directly on it and leave it on overnight. It definitely reduces the size in the morning.

it! I was determined to get a degree that gave me hands on experience and that made me ‘employable’ immediately after graduation. With three A Levels in English, French and Psychology I was often advised by teachers to pursue a degree in a ‘pure’ subject like English. Worried that I would leave university still not knowing what I really wanted to do, I decided to go down the vocational route and so went to Bournemouth University to study for a BA in Public Relations. The third year of the course was a compulsory year’s work experience in a press office and after interviewing, I accepted the role of PR Intern at a large international brand renowned for its prestige skincare. It was this year working in a small team of three that ignited my passion for the Beauty world (the products and the people), and my love of PR and communications. Even though it was hard to drag myself away, I went back to university for my final year and two days after finishing my final exam, I was lucky enough to start a new job as a PR Assistant in an extremely busy press office for an international consumer beauty brand. A year and a half later, I now look after the PR and Corporate Comms for one of the UK’s largest duty-free chains WDF promoting its 90 stores, the category of airport shopping and the fan-
tastic travel exclusive products across all categories, including Beauty. Can you explain what the role of a Press Officer is? Ultimately, the role of a Press Officer is to promote the brand/product/service you represent through the local, national and international media – online, in writing, on the radio and on TV. We are often also providing advice to all staff on media matters, always monitoring and evaluating press coverage, supporting departmental and corporate events and occasionally managing crisis communications. In my opinion, the role of a press officer is predominantly one of service provision. I believe it’s crucial to work in a ‘journalistfirst’ culture and to provide what is needed – whether that’s press releases, images, prices, interviews, quotes, etc - in a timely and professional manner. I never forget that journalism is a deadline driven profession and if I can’t provide what’s needed in a timely manner, there are plenty of other people who can! This is especially true in the highly competitive beauty world. A good Press Officer needs to be available, well informed and helpful at all times. A large part of being a Press Officer is relationship building – with journalists of course, but also with suppliers, retailers and even other brands. PRs are often seen as the ‘face’ of the company we work for, an ‘ambassador’ – so it really helps if you believe in what you’re representing.

Your personal favourite makeup products to use in summer? I can’t live without Maybelline XXL waterproof mascara any time of the year (but it’s particularly good for summer swimming) which I wear along with a flick of Bobbi Brown Longwear Gel Eyeliner. The new DiorSkin Nude foundation is beautiful for summer – just enough coverage to make your skin luminous and dewy and it doesn’t completely camouflage my summer freckles. A generous sweep of Armani’s Sheer Bronzer (for daytime) or Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick (for evenings) really make you look sunkissed. And it’s all held firmly in place by using Shu Uemura’s UV Under Base which is the only product I’ve ever found that stops my makeup running down my face on a sweaty overcrowded London tube in August! Do you have a beauty trick that always works? Every morning I heat my Shu eyelash curlers with a quick blast of my hair dryer to really set the curl in my lashes (which are naturally poker straight). It takes some practice to get the length of time under the hairdryer right though – you need to know exactly what temperature to go for! You only need to scorch your eyelids once to learn that lesson!

ucts should be a must-have in summer? Althoug I'm porcelain pale and like my skintone, I think a sunkissed look is always in for summer. For the face, I recommend products mentioned in the next question. Then, for a no-fuss, fresh eye look, I sweep a shimmery golden shade on the lid (try Sleek Storm palette, MAC Patina or All That Glitters or Inglot, which has a vast range of beautiful colors!) and line the upper lashline with a darker brown such as Annabelle So Foxy or MAC Embark. Then add mascara (for those hot, humid days I'd go for Covergirl Lashblast Volume waterproof), some blusher (Benefit CORALista or NYX Peach) and a brighter, warmer shade of lipstick (Rimmel Moisture Renew in Soft Coral or MAC Jest) or gloss (Revlon Coral Reef or Pink Pop).

My Holy Grail bronzer is Shisheido Luminizing Color Powder in Golden Bronze. It’s got two shades of bronzer and one highlighter so you can mix these to get the perfect shade to match your skin. It’s amazing AND it’s refillable! All though I don’t use self tanners much, the only one I will use is St.Tropez whipped bronze mousse. Best tip I ever got is to apply it with a beauty blender type sponge and dab it on. You keep your hands clean and you’ll get no streaks!

Nars do some great bronzers for people with medium skintones too - Laguna is a classic, but I sometimes find it a little overpowering on my pale skin. As for self tanning, I rarely do it - and when I do, I usually use a gradual tanning lotion, which cuts down on the mess and the smell, and also looks a lot more natural on me. I am in love with the lipsticks and glosses from the Chanel Summer 2010 collection perfect pinks and corals which are not unwearable. I was also very pleased to pick up Givenchy's "Island Hibiscus" limited edition lipstick which is a gorgeous fuchsia pink, and will double up as a blush creme with a light hand. Also, although not strictly summer collections, there are several beautiful shades in the Guerlain Rouge G lipstick range, and the eye wincingly expensive Tom Ford private blend lipsticks come in some very tempting
shades... At £35 a pop though, they are a real investment! It's difficult to think about summer makeup for me without mentioning the Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess range, which has some beautiful bronzers, eye colours and lip glosses. For a more subtle touch of colour, some people might like the new LE mascara coming out from YSL, which is a teal blue colour. From the high street, it's also well worth taking a look at the Revlon range for some beautiful and well formulated lipglosses, as well as a pretty LE summer eye palette. If you can get to a superdrug, the Sleek range is also well worth a look their new Circus palette, contains a range of bright shades which can be used for either full on drama, or as bright eyeliners. Also try Rimmel and Barry M for dramatic lip colours. If you are more into the natural look, then try the lip toned shades from the new Une range too.

I love a peachy blush in summer such as Metier Le Beaute's dupe of Orgasm, called Echo, that is just so much better, and of course, keeping a cooling spritz in the fridge such as Avene water won't make you more beautiful but will make you feel a whole lot less sticky and hot! I also use a sun cream for face and body from Institut Esthederm that doesn't use traditional SPFs but encourages melanin production and helps the skin to protect itself...I really like it a lot and have never burned with it.

Most importantly sunscreen! I always use an spf 30 from May to September. I also like a vitamin C serum underneath it to add antioxidant protection. I'm loving pale skin with a pop of colour on the lips and cheeks at the moment, so a bright lip gloss or lipstick and a toning cream/gel blusher.

What makeup and beauty products should be a must-have in summer? High SPF is a must. Maybe some oil-control product. For color issues I think it's a type thing. I love golden shimmer on dark toned girls. On more fair tans something peachy is nice. However, less is more just for the comfort. Bright lips is a trend I really like.

A complete/consistent skincare regimen is a must, in my opinion, not only for the summer, but year-round! But what summer might mean for your regimen is switching to lighter weight creams and moisturizers, due to the change in temperature. It might also mean using moisturizers with higher SPF's. And if you're spending time outdoors and at the beaches, you'll definitely want to make sure you're using a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection. Sun damage is the major external cause of aging.

SPF creams and after sun lotions, sun care products for hair, sun glasses, a good bronzer and a highlighter are priorities for my summer beauty look. These are closely followed by waterproof mascara and cream eye shadows and I treat myself to a vibrant nail polish and a bright luxury lipstick! What are your favourite bronzers and self-tanners? She blended almost up the brow bone and mirrored under the lower lash line to complete the gentle wash of colour. Lashes were curled, and a generous coating of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir completed the eyes.
