Nigel Stanislaus TEXT BY: Maria Mourikis PHOTOGRAPHY BY: James Demitri

Originally from sunny Singapore, Nigel Stanislaus is a ray of sunshine in the Australian beauty industry. Working on a range of both Australian and international celebrities, Nigel brings his vivacious personality and strict eye for detail to every job he is booked for. Nigel first became interested in makeup while working as an apprentice at a high end color forecasting company in New York City. Here, he experienced and learned first-hand about the wonderful world of colors and their effect on the fashion industry worldwide. Working with premier designers and industry people from around the United States, Nigel stumbled upon a chief Makeup Artist who introduced him to the concept of makeup artistry as a profession. He basically introduced me to the world of beauty, he says. Back home, Nigel set the foundations for his brilliant career by completing a six-year double degree in Fashion and Graphic Design. While studying, he found it difficult to get makeup out of his head. I would study half the week and do makeup the other half! I never stopped doing makeup, not even during holidays, he says. Nigel worked tirelessly perfecting his technique by gathering insights from renowned Makeup Artists and teaming up with some of the best in the Australian beauty industry, such as Rae Morris. When I was growing up, I really loved the principles and concepts of the late Kevyn Aucoin, as well as Laura Mercier and Charlotte Tilbury. Pat McGrath is also pretty amazing and very inventive. Closer to home and to my heart, Rae Morris has got to be my number one mentor, he says. Essentially self-taught, Nigel has had a rich and extremely varied makeup education. He is constantly honing his abilities by picking up tips from his mentors and drawing inspiration from his theoretical studies. Concentrating on fashion history and different genres, Nigel loves to preempt trends and create looks that are truly unique. After 12 years in the industry, Nigel has established a reputation for his attention to detail.

I can get pretty obsessive with eyes, brows and lashes. I love to titillate my viewers by mixing in different methods of color-layering, different textures and different finishes.

have worked has really opened up my views on life and the world Sometimes I can create a look based on a way a woman dances or speaks, he explains.

I do my skin in a special way too; people may have heard me saying, I want my skin to look expensive! If I do not get a good finish, I never hesitate to wipe it off and start again.

As well as traveling to luxury locations, another perk that Nigel enjoys is being able to play and experiment with new products and colors. This sounds really dorky, but getting to be the first to learn and play with new cosmetics and products is quite interesting for me, he says.

My advice is, just like a Chef knows the right amount of seasoning to add, a good Makeup Artist knows when to put down the brush, he explains. This glowing reputation has secured Nigel numerous opportunities, working in many locations around Australia and Asia with some extremely prominent celebrities. I have been on shoots and music video jobs, both solely and in a team, with clients such as Snoop Dog, Sophie Monk, Darren Hayes, Peaches Geldof, Michael BublÈ, Linda Evangelista, Catherine McNeil, Natalie Bassingthwaite from the Rogue Traders, Grinspoon and many more! he says. This is not to say that the life of Nigel Stanislaus is all glamorous shoulder-rubbing with fabulous celebrities. Nigel has definitely paid his dues in some pretty crazy circumstances. Once I was instructed to work in the back of a speeding car while trying to get to the next location for a shoot! (laughs) Another time I had to do makeup on board a luxury yacht with my legs anchored desperately to the floorboard trying to apply a red-lip in the chopping ocean somewhere off the coast of Byron Bay, Australia! It was nauseating! In the end, the model and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing at how ridiculously demanding the situation was! I love the adrenaline that these challenges give, he says. Like a true artist, Nigel gathers inspiration from all aspects of his life. Being an avid traveler, culture and different lifestyles are also very important to him. Meeting the locals in the different locations I

It was a fellow colleague who introduced Nigel to the wonders of Make Up Store. They told me how amazing the products are The variety of colors and choice of finishes; satin, sparkly, matte, shiny, shimmer, dewy are all great! he says. Nigels favorite product is the Glitter Eyeliner. It is dazzling and it always adds extra punch to colors! It has NEVER failed to brighten someones day and makes them feel extra special. It is my secret weapon! he says. As a recommendation to the everyday woman, however, Nigel suggests the Extra-Long Black Slanted Tweezers. ìItís precise and it works like a dream! I salute a woman if she is confident enough to go and face the world with nothing but sunblock, but I wonít forgive her if she has terrible brows. I cannot stress enough how important it is to look after you brows, just like skin and fresh breath!î he says. So what is in stall for the future of Nigel Stanislaus? I let my job take me where ever it leads me. I canít control what happens to me as my career, as it is based on a popular culture basis, but what I can do is be passionate about my job and hope that this leads to more opportunities for me! I would love to be based in New York again. Working hand in hand with the worldís best designers and photographers would be a real treat! I will let you know when I lunch with Lagerfeld or sip a cocktail with De La Renta!

Fearsome sounds from the deep Transylvanian mountains sweep through the night and bring out the dark, mystical forces. There are Whispers from trees in the old forest along with hissing brides as they come alive at night. The mysterious shadows of the brides sweep over the wet stonewalls. Everyone and everything is getting prepared for the ball. The look evokes thrills as the women pass by with horse and carriage. Their cool beauty is distinguished by their sheer skin and smoky eyes reflected in the dark purple red lips. At the ball dance floor she sweeps to the violinist tones. Her hair, makeup and dress are a fantastic ensemble. The Whisper woman is graceful and elusive.

Since immemorial times, darkness has been associated with mystery. Make Up Store has taken some of the inspiration from the sensual darkness and created a cool classic beauty. The elements are also inspired by the urge to be a modern urbanized woman. With Whisper Make Up Store wants to inspire and lure out hidden beauty within, no matter what your goals and visions are. The collection also includes a fragrance called Whisper. The perfume opens with spicy tones of musk and patchouli. It is followed by a seductive scent of jasmine and rose. The perfume ends with top notes of orange and tangerine.

If your lipstick is matt, you can easily get it to shimmer by mixing it with an eyedust or by finishing off with a lipgloss.

In this story we teach you how to use foundation and powder. Within cosmetics, a base should include a foundation, concealer and powder to give your face structure and color. Foundation yields an even skin texture and hue. Concealar neutralizes the appearance of spots, superficial vessels, dark rings under the eyes etc. Because powder fixates the foundation and concealer, it will prolong the longevity of the base upon which you are to apply eye makeup and rouge.

Apart from applying water-resistant eyeliner, you can easily paint your own false eyelashes. Mix the Mixing Liquid and Microshadow Pollution and paint new eyelashes under the eye using Eyeliner Brush. M  |  7

To maintain a matt complexion during the day or evening, just use the product Oil-blotting Paper. Tear off a small piece and dab the areas that have become shiny. The paper will absorb the excess oil. Then brush a little powder onto the face and it will once again look matt.

Matt Foundation Vanilla Dual Foundation Helsinki Eyepencil Black Microshadow Pollution Cybershadow Crow Eyedust Demon Lipstick Dawn

Many customers ask about the difference between loose powder and compact powder. A loose powder can easily fixate heavy makeup; i.e. ‘Studio Foundation’. Load your powder puff with large amounts of loose powder and affix the foundation. Loose powder can also be applied with a sponge or powder brush. A compact powder can likewise be applied with a powder puff, sponge or powder brush. Hence, the difference between the two products is found in how you wish to mattify your skin and not in the actual powder itself. Many people store their loose powder in the bathroom and keep their compact powder in the handbag. M  |  8

When choosing a foundation, assess your skin’s natural undertones (yellow, pink and green). Test your foundation from the cheek bone to the neck. If your foundation blends in well with your own skin color, you have chosen the right shade. Make Up Store’s professional makeup artists can help you find a foundation that addresses your specific needs and suits your skin tone.

Use the lip and eyebrow fixer Stay in Shape to avoid your lipstick from bleeding. Fill in your lip contours with Angelbrush #110 and Stay in Shape and then apply your lip pencil and lipstick.

How to achieve lustre on the body? First oil in your body with Body Lotion Shimmer, then apply the product Body Velvet. You can see the result on the model Hawa.

Because powder has a tendency to accentuate fine lines and dry patches, avoid application on these regions and in regions where the color is too light. A powder should fixate your foundation and mattify your skin. The color of the powder should match your skin tone. Powders that are too dark spoil the integrity of your base. M  |  10

Sport Foundation is a thinner foundation suitable for people who want an even skin tone without looking made up.

Avoid too much pigment on your rouge brush by tapping the tool once on your hand before applying the color. Gradually build up a fresh-looking shade. Excess rouge can easily be absorbed with a makeup sponge. You can also apply an overlying layer of powder.

M  |  11

An easy everyday look can be achieved with a base makeup and rouge. Also sweep the rouge brush across the eyelids to bring depth to your eyes and give your makeup a fresh and harmonious look.

For a very pale look, don’t bother to fill in your eyebrows. Form them with the help of Brow Set Fix and then powder the eyebrows with your powder. M  |  12

The base will give an even skin tone and structure to your face. A base makeup initially camouflages your natural features, only to reaccentuate them with the help of eyeshadows and rouge. It gives you the oppurtunity to accentuate certain facial features and redirect attention to your lips or eye makeup.

Fix your makeup to last all day long with the product Face Mist. Spray the face with Face Mist when you have applied your makeup to fix it, the product also contains nourishing ingredients which re-moisten your skin. M  |  13

If you want to apply a false tattoo, just use Mixing Liquid and Microshadow Pollution. Paint on the picture you want and finish by powdering the tattoo.

Are you unused to attaching false eyelashes? Get help from the Eyelash Applicator tool. The applicator looks like a large clamp which you hold the false eyelashes with. The clamp is formed so that you can easily attach the lashes as close to your natural eyelashes as possible. Hold still for approximately 30 seconds and then release. M  |  15

Mika Liias TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Nakarin Phopan

We are sitting on the lush terrace of Mika Liias and talking about the makeup empire that Make Up Store has become in only 12 years time. More than 170 boutiques in more than 20 countries prove the company to be one of the fastest growing. Despite its growth and unbelievable success, Mika is a down-to-earth person. He has green fingers and especially enjoys gardening and caring for the plants which crowd the roof terrace of the apartment. How does a person in his position think? I want to get the soon to be 40 year old entrepreneur to talk about the past, present and future in this interview. ”Everything started in 1996. I had by then already founded Sweden’s first makeup school, International Make Up Center. Relatively soon I realized that I couldn’t get hold of quality makeup at reasonable prices. So, I decided to make my own cosmetic brand which would fill this function. Make Up Store was born. Soon, I had created my own cosmetics line together with hand picked suppliers. The first boutique opened its doors and the cash take for the day was SEK 38. Then I wondered what I had gotten myself into; but I had dared to make a commitment”, says Mika. ”Since then, everything has, more or less, just kept rolling. The reasons I succeeded in creating a well reputed brand name in such a short time are due to a number of factors. When everything started, I decided I would not advertise about the company. I had to change this rule when people heard about Make Up Store, but didn’t know where we were located. Even today, we advertise relatively little compared with other companies. My idea was to always let the products speak for themselves”. ”Another factor is that I always work with the

vision that Make Up Store is and will be an educational cosmetic brand. As a result, we hold courses for both groups and privately. All personnel working with us are educated makeup artists. This is so that our customers will buy products they need and want. We don’t sell products without the knowledge of how they are to be used. In this way, we get satisfied customers who willingly share their experiences with their friends. We have, in addition, placed informative signs throughout the boutiques which describe the product and how it is to be used”. ”It’s also true that our cosmetic products are of extremely high quality. Swedish brands are world renowned for their quality, but this is never anything we have used in our marketing. Many of our products have been praised around the world. Just lately we were awarded a prize for our fantastic eyebrow product Tri Brow. Other products which have been awarded are our concealer Cover All Mix which neutralized beauty blemishes using anti-pigment creams”. That Make Up Store is an educational cosmetic brand can be seen by the printed material produced. There are detailed product brochures on the assortments which the customer can take home and study more in depth. Twice a year our inspirational glossy M Magazine is also published. The one you are holding in your hand is our Celebration issue No.10. ”M Magazine is a unique makeup magazine. In this forum, makeup artists and photographers from the entire world gather to inform us of their own makeup tips. The magazine contains schools and tips on how to apply makeup and interviews with interesting people who either work on stage or behind it with Make Up Store products. The idea of M Magazine is exactly as our campaigns, they are supposed to inspire, not dictate”. M  |  17

Further, Mika tells about a company with a clear business concept. ”This is something which is important to preserve carefully in order to strengthen the brand position on the market. Whether you visit a boutique in Vietnam or in Colorado, you will feel like coming home; all the boutiques have the same decor and assortment”. So, clear guidelines are another prerequisite for success and that is what they have done. The company is expanding at a high rate. ”But it is not just the company that has grown”, continues Mika. “Our assortment has increased with new product groups according to the requests and needs of the customers. We have introduced a fantastic Home SPA series. The community today holds an incredibly high tempo and it is important to take good care of your self and try to spare a little personal time. Even the lip and eyebrow pencil assortments have been extended. There are all kinds of colours as well as pencils with different functions. There are harder pencils for the person who wants sharp clear lines or softer pencils for those who want smudged eyes. The nail polish has also been put in order. The pencil is specially designed to allow for easier application and everything from matt to glittery lacquer is available in different colours. There is, quite simply, something for everyone”. So, what is the next goal, it feels as if the success story is complete? ”No, you can’t reason like that”, laughs Mika. “We struggle the whole time to become better. Make Up Store is exactly like my plants here on the terraces. It has to be nurtured and cared for in order to grow and thrive”.

The material latex is a mixture of the sap of the Heva Brasiliensis tree and natural rubber which is made from the condensed sap from the same tree.

In this story we teach you how to highlight and shade. Within cosmetics, the face can be re-shaped with techniques known as shading and highlighting to give you three-dimensional facial features. Highlighting, which accentuates facial features, is achieved with products that contain shimmer and luster. Regions that can be highlighted include the peak point on your cheekbone, the upper nose bridge and around the contours of your lips. In the fall, Make Up Store is introducing Mascara Sealer which makes any mascara waterresistant. If you want a makeup base which withstands damp environments, you should use Studio Foundation.

Natural negative shades include the hollow section in the inner corner of the eye (also known as the negative crease line), the downward shade on the outer corner of the eye as well as the distinct lines from the nose to the mouth, drooping lips and wrinkles caused by frowning. Negative shadows should be highlighted.

Studio Foundation Espresso Cover All Mix Dark Blush Lush Cybershadow Crow Cybershadow Silver Eyedust Darkness Eyepencil Black Lipstick Black Orchid Microshadow Lemon Eyelash Baby Body Velvet

Positive shadows are beautifying and should be enhanced with shading. Positive shadows include the crease line, the hollow below your cheeks and the shadow underneath your jaws.

M  |  21

The forehead, temples, sides of the nose and jaws can be highlighted or shaded. If you imagine a horizontal line across your face, the ideal look has the following measurements: Forehead (between the right and left hairlines) should measure 12 cm. The distance between the right and left cheekbones should be 13 cm. The right jawline to the left jawline should measure 11-11.5 cm. The total length of the face (from the hairline to the jaw) should equal 18 cm. Regions that are too small or too short can be highlighted. Regions that are too large or too wide can be toned down by shading. On a darker complexion, Microshadow Lemon works excellently as a highlighter to set off the cheekbones.

Dark colors enhance existing shades on the face and minimize larger areas. Light colors dampen natural shades but also magnify small sections. People who are considered beautiful have one thing in common. Their faces are symmetric and proportional. The ideal placement of the eye is as follows: one eye should fit between your eyes. A half an eye should fit between the outer end of your eye and the hairline. Because very few people fulfill these requirements, shading and highlighting are employed. Measure the distances with a brush in front of your eye and correct with shading and highlighting.

How to correct your nose. If your nose is flat and wide, shade the sides. If your nose is crooked, rectify it with a highlighter along a straight line on the bridge of your nose. If you have a long nose, shade the tip of the nose. If your nose is small and short, highlight the bridge and tip of the nose. Always remember to blend the colors with a sponge to remove visible lines and edges.

A sneak peak at Christmas

Make Up Store shows luxurious beauty filled with Ruby Red Love. The influences come from the happy seventies and totally shine with warmth. The Christmas star or Euphorbia Pulcherrima, as it is called in Latin, is an important symbol for the look. The flowers’ richness in colors shows the broad nuances of the campaign. Playfulness and fantasy are borrowed from the 70´s colorful wallpapers. MAKE UP STORE uses the patterns creative and soft shapes in the look. This shows in the harmonious makeup. Community and joy are the keywords where the door to a snug home is open for everybody. The look is truly compassionate and inclusive as the products will suit both you and your friends. The lips have the red color of love. The glamorous eye makeup has a soft globular line, just like the fabulous movie stars once had and Kiss-proof red lips with glamorous eyes flirting happily. Rouge can be applied in several ways and the shape of your face determines the method. A rouge is usually applied along the cheekbone. Place your finger below the bone to determine its shape. Note that the cheekbone continues upwards close to the nose. Apply the blush along the shape of your cheekbone, brushing underneath it and continuing upwards to accentuate it. Choose a color according to your personal taste. A brown rouge is usually selected; i.e. ‘Blush Nut’. The technique is called shading.

Clear forms can be applied in different ways. If you have filled in the area from the globular line upwards with Mixing Liquid and Microshadow Pollution, you can even use a primer, Eye Primer Clear in the desired form and then apply your eye shadow using an Eyeshadow Brush Small.

The music genre Punk developed during the 1970’s into a heavier music genre which was named Hardcore. The difference between Punk and Hardcore is that the latter has clear elements of metal music, like hard rock. There is also a genre which is called Hardcore Techno and this is Techno with an extremely high tempo. Hardcore is a little more of everything.

In this story we teach you about colours. The three primary colors, red, yellow and blue, can be mixed to create other colors; also known as secondary colors. Blending red, yellow and blue will give you grey. Yellow is a warm color and blue is a cold color. Red is neither warm nor cold. Therefore, a shade with yellow undertones is considered warm, and colors with blue undertones are cold. Purple is a cold color because it contains red and blue undertones. Orange is a warm color because it is a blend between red and yellow. Green can be warm or cold, depending on the balance between its blue and yellow undertones.

M  |  33

Neutralizing colors dampen the appearance of other colors, and are created by mixing the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). If you have a red spot, cover it with green (yellow and blue). If you have blueish dark rings under your eyes due to superficial vessels, neutralize their appearance with orange (yellow and red). Make Up Store’s concealer ‘Cover All Mix’ includes these three parts.

In this picture, a fully covering eye shadow of Mixing Liquid and loose glitter has been applied. Dip the brush in fluid and then in the glitter. Then press the glitter onto the eyelid.

An orange concealer to neutralize blue pigments. A green concealer to neutralize red pigments. And a beige concealer to dilute the other shades or lighten sections of your face. Make Up Store also sells separate concealers that only neutralize red or blue pigmentation or lighten facial regions – depending on your personal needs. Neutralizer in stores later this fall.

Complementary colors are shades that reinforce and accentuate other colors. The following chart shows which shades bring out the color of your eyes. Blue eye color = orange, terra cotta or redbrown eyeshadow. Green eye color = red or bronzelike eyeshadow. Dark blue eye color = Yellow, mustard or golden eyeshadow. Red brown eye color = Green, greyish green or brownish green eyeshadow. Gold brown eye color = Purple, greyish purple or violet blue eyeshadow. Brown eye color = Blue, grey blue or grey eyeshadow. Dark brown eye color = White or silver eyeshadow. M  |  35

Professional Makeup artists work with brushes to apply makeup. Good tools are key for a successful makeup. Brushes made of real hair fit dry and powdery products, while brushes with synthetic bristles are more suitable for creamy products. Invest in a good kit with quality brushes. Wellmaintained brushes have a longer shelf life and justify the purchase. Wash your brushes once a week with your makeup remover. Squeeze the water out of the brush along the bristles with a towel. Brushes should always airdry in a horisontal position to avoid water entering the shaft and dissolving the adhesive. You can also desinfect your brush with Make Up Store’s Brush Cleaner. The colour on the cheeks is painted in the following way: Prime first using High Tech Lighter Sundust. It is a creamy product which works excellently as a primer. Jukka Suutari TEXT BY: Peter Hammar PHOTOGRAPHY BY: James McKenzie

He has been a world champion level dancer in Europe and North America for 20 years and has held the position of Artistic Director for a successful Finnish dance company for several years. He has collaborated with such artists as Boney M, Geena Davis, Renny Harlin and Ricky Martin. And now, he is making his mark in Canada. After graduating the COMPLECTIONS INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY in Toronto, Jukka took part in ANNUAL MAKE UP FOREVER - A Makeup Artist competition and won the first place. From there on, nothing has stopped him in his flying career. How would you describe yourself? I’m definitely a fun-loving person. I love to work and sometimes, maybe, I work too much for my own good. Sometimes, I’m too serious and very critical of my work. I try to “think outside the box”. I love high fashion, the “drama” of Haute Couture! Dior, Galliano, Gaultier, Alexander Mc-Queen and such. They inspire me! Tell me about your career and education. I was a professional World Champion level dancer before entering the world of Make up and hairstyling. I started with hair first, studying in Finland. I ran my own hair business, but was drawn back to the world of dance. I performed around the world in over 40 countries from Alaska to India to Australia. I have always been interested in cosmetics, and after doing makeup for the shows for so many years, it seemed only natural to pursue it as a career. After a rather nasty back injury, the time was right for me to move on with my dream. Moving to Canada was a big step in my life and there were a lot of important changes for me. Not only did I have to refresh my hair skills and study to be a makeup artist, but I also started a new life in a new continent. When and where did your interest in beauty, fashion & makeup start? I believe it has been an interest of mine since a young age. Working in showbusiness, it just grew stronger. Showbusiness fostered my love of colors, the ability to change one’s persona and the fun of enhancing ones beauty. This is what got me really interested in the field of makeup artistry. During your career, which is/are the most exiting assignments? I’ve been very lucky to have had good fortune to meet good people, photographers, stylists and Art Directors etc.. All the necessary steps to take you forward with your career. I love do-

ing photo shoots. Working with such models as Sofi from Supreme Modelling Agency, NYC and Alex Loomans from Elmer Olsen Models was a great experience.LThese models are on pages of VOGUE etc all the time. Of course, my very first published editorial was also a great experience too! Do you have any advice for those who want to be in the beauty industry? Don’t give up on your dream... This industry can be hard, stay focused and picture yourself where you wanna be and work hard towards it! What are you working with right now that you can share with us? At this moment, I am working on three big shoots. It is for a fashion magazine. I am doing an eightpage beauty story that I created; and two other editorials, where I have the key responsibility for Makeup and Hair. At the moment, I am with two different agencies. One is Artist’s By Timothy Priano in USA - and PLUTINO GROUP here in Canada. I pretty much go wherever I am called. What do you think is the future in beauty & makeup trends? Trends change very often. The classic looks are here to stay. I think the future will bring a wonderful contradiction with a trend towards more natural looks, but also towards a wonderfully creative and exciting use of color. I think the use of lots of color will expand to mainstream as well. What are you doing in 10 years? Dreams and hopes. I would like to see myself in a well-established company, where I can work on the creative team. I would also like to teach. I remember the time when I was studying to to be a makeup artist. There were those “Aha” moments, when you realize more about makeup and structure etc.. I wish to, someday, create these moments with the next generation of makeup artists. Do you have a motto? “Sometimes you have to go far to see close”. This motto has traveled with me for many years... And it applies to many different areas of life in general... On fashion shows and photo shoots, it can be stressful. What are your beauty tips and tricks onstage? At first, I try to create a peaceful atmosphere with the model - make her/him relaxed and M  |  39

create a soothing makeup experience... And I use a good concealer!! Which one is your favorite makeup look? There isn’t just one look that I like. I like the drama of dramatic eyes and bold lips. I also enjoy doing natural beauty, finding the real beauty of the client/model. I like and enjoy anything as long as it’s done well or is really inspired by something. Who wouldn’t love the classic looks of Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn? A modern day icon for me would be Linda Evangelista. I do like women with a little bit of a twist. To have something interesting in their face that makes them different. Who is the most stylish celebrity? Motivate. The first two names that come to mind are Alicia Keys and Beyonce. Their makeup always seem beautiful, well-done and always match with their overall look. Marcia Cross from the American Sitcom ‘Desperate Housewives’ looks beautiful on every occasion. If you have to get a model ready in 10 minutes, how would you do hair/makeup? First, deep breath, spritz of Thermal Spa water on the face, moisturize and use concealer under eyes if needed. Define, shape and/ or fill the eyebrows. They willmake the model and also make her look moreawake and alert. Then, mascara and lipgloss. Regarding hair, I would do a classic low ponytail. Do you have any beauty tricks on make up that you want to share with the readers of M Magazine? I am very big on cream blushes... I love them! Using it on top of the foundation. So easy and fast to blend. Also, I like to mix glosses and lipsticks to create the exact shades I need for the look I am going for. I do the same with concealer and foundation. Sometimes, you need just a little extra coverage. A drop of concealer mixed with the foundation works wonders. I was first introduced to Make Up Store in Finland, where I used to live. I became a huge fan of the products. Living in Toronto makes it a little harder for me to get the products. I stock up when visiting Finland. There is a store in Edmonton, but it’s very far to go. Hopefully, there’s one in Toronto soon too...

In this Story we teach you about perfect eyebrows. Tweeze your eyebrows to avoid a uneven base for your eye makeup. You can remove unwanted hair with a tweezer or with ‘Eyebrow Razor’. Before you modify your eyebrows, you can specify the intended shape with a light-colored eye pencil. Once the desired shape has been marked out, pull skin taut with your free hand. Place the tip of the tweezer on the skin without pinching it and pull the hair in the direction of growth. The ideal eyebrow should start along the vertical line formed from the outermost edge of your nostril to the start of your nose. When you look straight ahead, the peak of the brow should intersect the imaginary axis that extends from the side of your nostril to the edge of the iris. The length of the eyebrow is determined by protracting a line from the outer edge of the nostril to the outer corner of the iris. Identify the different points on your face with a brush.

The easiest trick for a delightful gaze is to create beautiful eyebrows. If your eyes are narrow, expand the distance between the eyebrows using tweezers. Eyes that are set wide apart seem closer if you fill in your eyebrows to reduce the gap between brows. A round face can be harmonized by re-shaping your eyebrows so that they point towards your ears. If your face is rectangular, eyebrows should end above the center of the eye. Oblong faces look wider if eyebrows point horizontally towards the topmost of the ear. M  |  42

Regardless of style and technique, you must always be steady in your hands and pull skin taut when applying eyeliner. The difference between a liquid eyeliner and a cake eyeliner lies in the ability to control the intensity of the cake liner. Cake eyeliner can be dark and thick if you mix it with a small amount of water. Additional water will dilute and lighten the color of the product. M  |  43

How to apply eyeliner. Pull skin tight on the eyelid and draw a thin line as close as possible to your lashes. Start from the inner corner of the eye and extend towards the outer end. Extract a heavier line from the middle of the eye. Finish the look by blending it upwards with black eyeshadow, such as Microshadow Pollution, using Angel Brush. M  |  44

A line with black, brown or grey Eyepencil Black can properly define the shape of your eyes. The eyepencil reinforces the effect of the mascara and gives you an intense gaze. Start in the outer end of the eye and draw inwards towards the nose in short stretches. The line should thin out as you approach the nose. Blend the eyepencil from the lash line and upwards with Angel Brush. The shape of the eye can be marked with black eyepencil inside the lower lash line. The minimizing effect of the eyepencil can be counteracted by blending Microshadow Pollution with Angel Brush from the outer end of the lower lash line by a millimiter.

– how to apply –

How to correct and perfect eye shapes Sad eyes 1. Begin with forming the eyebrows to the desired form. Apply Eye Primer which ensures that the shadow stays in place for the entire day and protects the eyelid.

2. Mark the eye using dark eyepencil along the waterline and on the edges of the eye lashes.

3. Use a flat hair brush following the form of the eye. Erase the eyepencil first and then apply the eye shadow. Remember to take a little colour at a time and work it in thoroughly. The longer you work with the makeup, the longer it will keep.

4. Finish off by working the shadow already on the lid with a clean, larger brush. Work upwards and outwards. Last, but not least, fill in the eye brows which frame the whole makeup.

M  |  53

– how to apply – Lazy eyes 1. Form the eye brows from underneath to achieve a natural lift.

2. Lighten both sides of the edges of the eyes to hide dark shadows which otherwise can make the eye look tired and out of sorts.

3. Mark using a dark pencil on the underside of the eyelashes from the middle of the eye outwards towards the edge of the eyes. Add a yellow tone to the membrane (waterline) for an alert look.

4. Add a dark shadow using a smaller brush to the bone of the eye for the sake of precision and then tone the shadow up and outwards until it softly disappears into the skin tone to create a soft look and a marked, globular line.

Widely separated eyes 1. Decide how you want to form the eye brows and do them accordingly.

2. Apply a light shadow to the entire upper eyelid and under the eye brow to achieve and up-lifting effect.

3. Mark the lower part of the eye using a pencil and then apply shadow above the eyepencil to prevent the eyepencil from flowing outwards. Also apply shadow to the globe bone. Feel the bone of the eyelid with your finger in order to know exactly where to place the brush and apply the shadow. Remember to always have a relaxed face when applying your makeup. 4. Follow the bone of the eye with the brush. Work in the colour a little at a time using small movements. Leave the eyelid light and mark the globe-line darkly. Apply a light pencil from the middle of the membrane (waterline) inwards. Apply the dark pencil to the other side.

M  |  54

– how to apply – Narrow eyes 1. For narrow eyes, a lift is required created by light and dark.

2. Apply the yellow part of Cover All Mix along the edge of the eye to hide any redness.

3. Follow along the underside of the eye upwards and outwards, apply the brush at a slant from the nostril towards the outer edge of the eyebrow in order to know how far out you can apply the shadow.

4. Meet the eyebrow with a brown shadow which tones out towards the edges. Apply a highlighter to the inner edge of the eye and under the eyebrow.

Deep set eyes 1. Apply concealer under the eye to hide dark shadows.

2. Use a light, yellow-toned eyepencil for the inner edge of the eye and for the outer part of the eyelid to adjust the form. The yellow-toned eyepencil will also hide red mucous membranes and make the whites of the eye look whiter.

3. Sweep from the edge of the eye lash outwards from the eye. A smudged makeup can in fact have any dark colour at all but is always strongest around the eye lashes and toned down the further the distance from the eye. Use a little colour at a time and apply the shadows thoroughly. 4. Fill in the eyebrow using Tri Brow Color which softly frames your face and gives a clean look, as well as character.

Kylie Minogue TEXT BY: Peter Hammar PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Ken McKay

She has mesmerized the whole world for over twenty years, defeated breast cancer, recently received an OBE from the Royal Family, and become immortalized with a statue of herself in Melbourne. We are talking about none other than Australia’s Princess, Kylie Minogue, child actress turned soap opera star, turned performer and certainly turned into one of the immortals. How does she do it? Which guiding stars does she follow? Well we were lucky enough to interview Kylie in the midst of her recent tour to Stockholm and find out exactly what Kylie’s secret tips and tricks to timeless beauty and eternal success are. Her breakthrough hit from 1987, “I Should Be So Lucky”, has really come to symbolize her entire life and career. With the song, she ends a formidable and mind-blowing performance filled with disco pralines, decor changes, outfit changes (we counted four in total), and with an energy that would make most teenagers gasp for breath. Nobody is left disappointed when the lights shut off. Kylie’s parents, Ron and Carol, an accountant and a former dancer respectively, permitted Kylie and her sister Dannii to perform in the soap opera “Skyways”. As a 15-year old, she sang for the first time on “Young Talent Time”, so they have certainly had enough time to cultivate their creativity. When asked how Ms Minogue would describe herself as an artist, the response was simple, yet to the point she is travelling through a career of ‘creative evolution’. And a creative evolution would be no lie; nobody can deny the journey she has embarked upon has been anything short of this. Kylie kicked off her career in the Australian soap opera, “Neighbours” and soon became a television icon especially in Asia Pa-

cific and UK. She soon transitioned into music and in the biggest way possible, having hits that reigned the global charts from the end of the 1980s to the beginning of the 1990s. Then there was her fabulous comeback in 2000 with “Spinning Around” and those tiny gold hot-pants that got tongues wagging. Since then Kylie has been maintaining her crown as the princess of pop and has not disappeared from our sights since. Her latest tour ‘KYLIEX2008’ is receiving rave reviews around the globe, and Kylie claims it to be the most exciting highlight of her career to date, as she performs to thousands of fans at every show. And she certainly has fans. Kylie has sold more than 65 million albums and 55 million singles; together equating more than 120 million records! That’s hardly something to shrug about, Kylie has been in the industry for some time, and has worked out the recipe for success. Her advice to aspiring singers wanting to break through and succeed in the industry is to ‘work hard and believe in yourself’. Her fortitude has helped her through the trials and tribulations of 2005, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Today, she is fully recovered. She brings her strength to all aspects of her life. Recently, she revealed in the German Vogue that she longs for a husband and family, but that she has come to realize that it might not befit her and she no longer strives for a family life. And so she continues to amaze her fans on another level beyond her talent and strength. Having recently celebrated her 40th birthday, Kylie is still a picture of beauty, style, and class. An icon to many, always looking picture perfect, even in her toughest times, we tried to find M  |  57

out her secret to looking fabulous. It seems it’s all natural. When asked for her beauty secrets she told us it was simply to drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Her other tip was to avoid getting too much sun, which as we know sunburn + skin = ultimate sin. Over the years Kylie has been splashed across the pages of fashion magazines around the globe, has sported some of the most sought after looks, and has been dressed by some of the most highly-desired designers, making her the envy of many women. The style icon claims that her interest in beauty and style has been an important part of her life, even back to the days of being a young girl in Australia, and it shows in the effortless class she exudes from day to day. Even when she is running a hectic schedule and only has 10 minutes to get ready, the style she chooses to stick with is ‘simple and classic’. While her look is constantly changing and evolving through her career, she claims that her favourite look is the current Gaultier designs that she wears while dazzling the crowds in the current KYLIEX2008 tour. Future forecasts for style and beauty were simple for Kylie. ‘Keep your own style; there are no set rules except what feels stylish and beautiful to you’. All in all the Pop Princess of the world has given us healthy and simple rules to follow –get plenty of sleep, avoid sunning yourself, guzzle down the water, and keep your style classic and unique to yourself. With those words ringing in my ears, I hurry back in a scorchingly hot Stockholm, making sure my sunglasses are on as I head for the water stand.

COVER ALL MIX Finding the right tone of concealer or foundation can sometimes be most difficult of all. Then, getting it to cover naturally without changing the tone of the face is an art. Make Up Stores absolute pride and big seller is called Cover All Mix, used by consumers and leading makeup artists throughout the world. This is a highly pigmented concealer with neutralizing properties. Its unique ingredients, such as vitamin E and Tocopheryl acetate among

others, help the skin to retain its moisture which in its turn helps to create a smooth and lovely result. The ingredients protect your skin from outer stress and stimulate cell production. Cover All Mix doesn’t just cover as other concealers do; it neutralizes pigment giving a perfect, natural result to the skin. The three colours all have their own unique properties and together they form an unbeatable trio.

The beige colour is used to lighten up both the other colours and works excellently as a base for the eyelid or as a nice highlighter under e.g. the eyebrows. The red colour neutralizes blue tones in the face, as e.g. under the eyes.

The yellow colour neutralizes red parts such as surface blood vessels, blemishes, etc.

Cosmetics has existed since bygone times. Already in 3500 BC, women and men wore makeup in Egypt. Their eye makeup consisted of charchoal and malachite, and they colored their lips with cochineal lice. Nails, palms and feet were dyed in henna. Henna was not only a royal symbol of power, but also functioned as sun protection. The discovery of ointments and balms dating back to 2000-3000 BC reveal that Egyptians were buried with seven kinds of scents and two types of makeup.

The first recipe for toothpaste originates from 1600 BC. Some of the ingredients included coppar, honey, flint and graphite. Hair was completely shaved and replaced with wigs and loose beards during festivals – for both men and women! M  |  61

Between 500 BC and 500 AD, eyebrows were shaved and re-traced with burned ant eggs. The hair was bleached with dog urine. Facial masks were based on eggs, resin, honey flowers and the urine from pregnant women. Baths in goat milk were very popular. The makeup resembled current cosmetics and was based on various ointments of animal and plant fats; including lanolin (which is still used today). Makeup styles primarily consisted of shades of white and red.

Let inspiration flow! Turquoise of the 70’s is back, this time in a new style; a little wilder, a little more daring. Move away from the traditional eye makeup and apply the shades Cybershadow Gingerleaf and Microshadow City Jungle along the cheekbone. Tone in a dark shade in the inner corner of the eye and at the edge of the lower eyelid. Then mark the eye, with the dark blue Eyepencil Heaven on the inside of the upper and lower lids. 500 AD – 16th century. During the Middle Ages, makeup was sparsely used. Ointments were no longer applied due to claims of quackery. Noble women, however, eagerly accentuated their blue veins with blue makeup to enhance their beauty.

The lips have always been seen as a seductive tool and now it’s high time to use their power. Choose two tones to mix in wrap-overs to create an irresistible effect. During the 1400s and 1500s, makeup was once again popular. Hygiene was still neglected and everything was covered with makeup and powder. Public bath houses were closed due to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. People stank of sweat and garments were rimmed with fur to confine lice within the clothing. Around the mid-1500s, the Queen of England, Elizabeth I, spawned a new fashion. The base makeup was white and completed with a strong rouge and red lips. Eyebrows were well-plucked. Lead carbonate and mercury were used to bleach the skin; poisonous substances that led to horrible eye diseases, dental caries, wrinkled skin and lethal lead poisoning. Because high foreheads were considered beautiful, many women shaved theirs.

17th century, the Baroque Age. Hygiene was still neglected and beauty patches were manufactured to cover scars and breakouts. Older women hid the appearance of sunken cheeks by placing wax cushions in their mouth. The base makeup was light and completed with a roundly shaped and somewhat exaggerated rouge. The eyebrows were defined with eyeshadows in grey, blue and brown. The lips were full and cherry red.18th century, Rococo. The European royal courts indulged in luxury while the people starved. The shortage of flour was severe because the product was used to powder wigs instead. High foreheads were still the ideal and wigs were enormous. The base makeup was light while the eyebrows were thin, black and notably arched. The well-defined rouge was spherically shaped while the mouth was small like a rose bud. The white makeup contained arsenic; a substance just as harmful as earlier ingredients. Eye inflammation and periodontitis caused by the poison affected men and women because both sexes used makeup. At the end of the 1700s, philosopher Jean Jacques Rosseau coined the phrase “Back to nature”. Baths in goat milk were popular once again and wigs were put back into their drawers.

19th century. The makeup consisted of a natural base as well as natural rouge and eyebrows. The men also returned to their natural looks. 1920s. Women started working which brought simpler trends to makeup, clothes and hairstyles. Modern and emancipated womens’ role models included Mary Pickford, Theda Bara and Josephine Baker. The base was relaxed and the eyebrows were natural but thin. The eyes were heavily shaded to bring out a rounder shape. The mouth was short, highly placed and deep red. Pale lips were a big no-no. The rouge was round and pink-red, like a porcelain doll. On-screen cosmetics were overstated because motion pictures were still filmed in black-and-white.

Punk is here to stay, with its red lips and matching eyelids. Begin by applying a thin layer of Eazy Cover Red around the contour of the lips. Then powder over with a thin layer of Loose Powder to seal the lip pencil which you apply along the edge of the lips. Then, when you apply a thin layer of the Lipstick Devil, it will stay fixed. Do you love red lips but are hindered from wearing it due to deep grooves on the lips? Try applying a thin layer of Stay in Shape around the lips before powdering and applying the pencil.

1930s. For the first time in history, sun tans became trendy. In the evening, eyes were heavily colored for a smokey look with a blue grey shade along the crease line. A darker eyeshadow was used to rim the entire eye. Often, kohl also lined the inside of the lash lines. The eyebrows were still thin but assumed a more natural shape. Barely any rouge was applied and the ideal mouth was long, thin and mildly red. The big icons of the day were Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.

Forget boy bands. E.M.D. is Sweden’s new super group and includes former “Idol” contestants Erik Segerstedt, Mattias Andreasson and Danny Saucedo. Their first single, “All for Love”, has already sold 60,000 copies! It was the best-selling single in Sweden for seven weeks straight. Last spring, E.M.D. launched their first album, “State of Mind”. This autumn, they will release the single “Alone”. “We expect to be bashed”, says Danny Saucedo and smiles widely. The band firmly believes that the criticism will have nothing to do with the song itself. Not at all. The explanation is simple. All three members are former contestants of the tv show “Idol”, where a sarcastic jury are on a nationwide search for tomorrow’s stars. In Sweden, participation in such a show has its consequences. Mattias Andréasson, for instance, had already delivered several critically acclaimed performances in his hometown, Västerås, before he applied to “Idol 2007”. He had always been applauded and received rave reviews. After his involvement with “Idol”, however, the same magazines started criticizing his shows. When reviewing the band, a critic even said that the men had nothing to contribute but good looks. Contrary to belief, all three members have a solid background in music and have attended arduous music schools since childhood years. As a spontaneous test of their skills, the group bursts into a tune. Their hit, “All for Love”, has never been performed so beautifully. If the voice coach and Idol jury member Kishti Tomita had witnessed the incident, her eyes would tear up and she would have one of her famous halleluiah moments. All three men agree that they have a lot to thank “Idol” for. “We learned so much during our time on ‘Idol’”, says Mattias Andréasson, “In the beginning, I felt sick to my stomach be-

fore each show. I neither ate nor slept. But the further into the competition I got, the easier it became.” “In Sweden, ‘Idol’ is frowned upon. Many people believe that the show offers a shortcut to fame and fortune. But we have all had to work really hard to live on our music”, Danny Saucedo explains. “I am living my dream and that makes me extremely grateful. ‘Idol’ was an immensely educational period in my life”, Erik Segerstedt reveals. “We quickly learned new songs by heart, rehearsed before each performance and kept track of all fifteen cameras. Every week also entailed a new live performance on tv before one million viewers”, he continues. After “Idol 2006”, Danny Saucedo launched his solo career but also wanted to work with Erik Segerstedt. The singers did not cater to the idea of a duet and preferred forming a group. They thought of Mattias Andréasson, who was competing in the 2007 edition of “Idol”. “We searched for a guy who sang slightly false and was a bit on the chubby side”, Danny Saucedo laughs. Andreasson quickly became the third member of the group and they immediately started working on their music. From the beginning, one half of their first album was planned to consist of covers; the other half would contain entirely new tracks. “All for Love” is, for instance, a cover initially performed by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting on the soundtrack to the motion picture “The Three Musketeers”. But the band decided to take on a new direction. “It was fun to see how the new tracks took all the space in the album”, Mattias Andréasson says. The singer is also very content with the fact that their debut album, “A State of Mind”, is selling really well. M  |  69

With success comes fame and they have mixed feelings about the phenomenon. In the beginning, they found it exhilarating. But they grew used to it and being a celebrity was quickly de-romanticized. “We are still the same people as we were before our breakthough; the difference now is that complete strangers have opinions about us”, Danny Saucedo says. Danny has also took part in the tv show “Lets Dance”, where Swedish celebrities conquer the dance floor together with the country’s best competitive dancers. In contrast to “Idol”, viewers of “Let’s Dance” transcend all age groups and Danny quickly became a viewer favorite. “So now I’m an established star too”, he laughs. All three members want to make a good impression. They are friendly, nice and attractive. They are attentive about their physical appearance and do not shy away from cosmetics. “Makeup is fun!”, Saucedo proclaims, “We want to look as good as possible, because appearance is an important part of our job.” “I pluck my eyebrows”, Erik Segerstedt confesses. In the next breath, he also confesses to using foundation, concealer and some bronzer. Danny laughs and agrees. “It’s weird how shading can do such miracles”. Who is their male icon? “Brad Pitt, but he has let himself go a bit”, Danny Saucedo says. “Johnny Depp, because he is cool and goodlooking”, Erik Segerstedt adds. “Colin Farrell”, is Mattias Andréasson’s answer. How their ideal woman looks like is a bit harder to describe. “We like all types of girls”, they say in a chorus.

Facial Mud Mask is a face mask which cleans in depth, contracts the pores and leaves a clean, firm feeling. The mask adds lustre and gently removes dead skin cells while stimulating micro circulation. It works excellently on point application to certain parts of the face where you have large pores, or around the nose where impurities can often be seen. Apply to the whole face and neck avoiding the area around the eyes, let it work for 10 - 15 minutes and remove using warm water. Suits all types of skin.

The original music for the film was produced by Harold Faltermeyer, also known for his intro of ”Beverly Hills Cop”.

One way of smudging eyes is to first fill in around the eye using Eyepencil Black. Smudge using the pencil Angel Brush #110. The pencil will then become toned and sooty. Then fill in with the Eyeshadow Pollution using the Eyeshadow Brush Small. When you have applied the eye shadow above the pencil, the result becomes soft and long-lasting. M  |  76

When you are going to paint a larger area of the face, it feels logical to use a large brush. However, the size of the brush is decisive to the real intensity of your makeup. Therefore, use a large brush when you want a thin layer and light-touch result. Use a small brush when you want the colour to be very intensive.

Johanna Frenne TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Thomas Mead

The doors opened to Sweden’s first real makeup school - The International Make Up Center 18 years ago in the cellar premises on Regeringsgatan. We met Johanna Frenne, teacher at IMC since 2002, to exchange a few words about the school, which has meant so much for so many. “International Make Up Center started educating professional makeup artists in 1990. Our branch in Gothenburg opened in 1992 and in 2001 the school in Malmö was launched. International Make Up Center is available in Sweden and worldwide. Today, we are the only makeup school in Sweden which organizes international education privately. Our goal is to give training that makes our students attractive to the industry, in Sweden and abroad,” says Johanna. The school has educated hundreds of makeup artists within the branch, both nationally and internationally well known. Today, IMC is one of the world leading makeup schools to be found in many countries. New schools are opening all the time. ”The name International Makeup Center describes our business. International signifies that we offer a broad international training. Makeup is our mission and Center infers that all our students are always welcome back for advice, as new students and as alumni. “ Johanna continues by telling about her own career. ”I worked as a freelance makeup artist for five years after my education at IMC in 1997 when Olle Johansson, who was the director at IMC, contacted me and asked me to work as a teacher at the school. Since then, I have taught while working as a makeup artist. Johanna continues further to point out what

makes teachers at IMC so unique. ”That is what is so good about our teachers at the school, all work professionally and keep themselves up to date with the branch and its development. The skills and contacts does ot become obsolete”. ”The education itself is short, but intensive. A new course starts every 10th week. We have a 10-week basic course in beauty makeup and a 20-week complete course for beauty and character, film and theatre. Often it is good to have as broad an education as possible, since beauty jobs often require being able to apply a mustache or create a wound. It’s too bad to have to say no thank you to a job that is otherwise fun. The classes are five hours long, either during the mornings 8 - 12 or evenings 17.30 - 21.00. We usually have approximately 20 students in each class. Many think that we only accept very young girls as students, but this is not true; the age group extends between 18 to 45 year old women and men, with a focus around the age of 22. Some may have worked with boring jobs, they see a chance to do something with their lives and commit to an education in makeup”. Also included in the course is genuine practical training so that you can get a feel how it is to work in the business. ”From the very start the students follow the teachers as assistants to real photography shoots, star mingles and final shows at design schools. Other courses give practical experience at e.g. boutiques, but we feel it is more useful to get out and start working directly on a contact network which well later becomes the base for future jobs as a freelance makeup artist. There are daily calls asking for student for company events and M  |  85

similar. Following a complete education, you are a certified makeup artist with an international certificate. It is called an International Make Up Center because you can always feel welcome to return with questions which can arise e.g. how to do certain makeup in certain studio situations or for night photography. We always think that it is fun to see our students succeed in this creative and challenging branch”. So, how do things look after completing the education at IMC? ”Many of our graduates work within the branch today, both as freelance makeup artists and in boutiques. Describing the work of a makeup artist can be difficult. If you look up the word makeup in a dictionary, it says that a makeup artist creates makeup and prosthetics for theatrical, television, film and other similar productions including the modeling world. This is true, but the profession extends beyond this definition. Makeup artistry is a 5000-year old discipline. In ancient Egypt, they used makeup to beautify and transform their appearances. Since then, the cosmetic industry has changed dramatically, as new products and techniques are continuously being developed. Present-day makeup artists have a broad worldwide market which encompasses fields such as theatre, movies, TV, fashion shows, photo shoots, music videos etc. As a certificated makeup artist, your future prospects are relatively good. Thanks to the ever growing industry with new TV-channels and media outlets, makeup artists can look forward to a bright future.

In nature, we find power in different elements. There are a total of four elements: earth, water, wind and fire. Air is sometime mentioned as a fifth element. During Antiquity, they thought these elements constituted all matter. Plato was one of those who thought that the salt of the world was built on these powers; an interesting picture of the world?

Andiyanto TEXT BY: Elaine Fong PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Pinky Mirror

Andiyanto - A Great Teacher Who’s a Persistent Student Himself Having reigned the world of colors in Indonesia for the past 20 years and cultivated countless award-winning makeup artists in this southern archipelago made up of more than 17,000 islands, Andiyanto paces himself akin to the country’s constant evolution... But in his artistry realm. “I entered this beauty world in 1980. Gradually with the experience gathered, I became a beauty teacher. I only had one motive; that is, to share my knowledge. The satisfaction from this job is enormous.” Andiyanto is the proud master for many successful makeup artists in Indonesia today. If one does a count, he would probably be the most-thanked person in all small and big beauty competitions held locally (and even internationally). That does not make him a contented man. He is still a very hands-on person who actively serves the fashion and media industry with his creations. “I’m still very excited in each and every assignment I take on; be it for bridal, fashion show, TV production or magazine shoot. Each job presents me the opportunity to create new looks and hairstyles, experiment with different colors or textures, and most importantly, a chance to learn from mistakes.” “Learning is a life-long process. While people are constantly changing their lifestyles and tastes, technology also advances by leaps and bounds every day. New products are created to suit the growing needs of every discerning individual. I see every new cosmetic product

as being unique. I earnestly try them out with different application techniques for the best results on different people. Mistakes are inevitable, but that is never a deterrent to me. All the more, it pushes me to seek solutions. Very often, they become my new creations.” Asked of what field of technology would be most beneficial to a makeup artist, Andiyanto replied, “Skincare for healthier skin and better complexion. A woman with good skin is most easy to apply makeup on. Less focus on concealing and more on enhancing with creativity. That is also very motivating for a makeup artist.” Andiyanto enjoys applying makeup for the sheer pleasure of seeing how a woman can be transformed under his hand. “My hobby is changing people’s faces. I enjoy correcting facial flaws to near-perfection. It not only gives the woman more self-confidence, but also job satisfaction for myself.” “I have a special interest in eye makeup as eyes are the soul of a person and reflect her character. They also require more techniques than the rest of the face to beautify them. Most contact between two persons occurs through the eyes and that makes them the most studied feature. I love to see how a pair of dull-looking eyes brightens up, droopy eyes lift up to look younger or small eyes become intense and bigger... With the right makeup.” Boosting Andiyanto’s wealth of beauty experience are four beauty publications – “The Make Over”, “Beauty Expose by Andiyanto”, “The Make Over Mata” and “Hair Style Inspiration”. One essential tip from Andiyanto is, “When M  |  97

doing photoshoot for fashion spread, it is important to understand the fashion design, to create a look that complements the style of design. Be focused on a makeup style that brings out the mood and feel of the model and fashion.” He shares his rule of the thumb, “In order to create a makeup that is strong yet harmonious, concentrate on what is being focused. If you choose to focus on eye makeup, blush and lip color shouldn’t be strong.” Andiyanto adores the beauty icon Grace Kelly because of her classical beauty. “Her face shows perfect elegance”. His other adored celebrity is Beyonce. “Beyonce has a beautiful sun-kissed skin. Minimal and natural makeup is all she needs for the streets and even on the red carpet.” If given only 10 minutes to do a makeup, Andyanto concentrates on shading and highlighting to enhance the facial expression and uses the right colors of eyeshadow to shade the eyes for a more intense look. “Make Up Store is an ever-inspiring brand. I am blessed to be able to work with a professional brand like this and my hope for the next 10 years is to conceive new creations to bring myself to another level and publish more beauty books to share my learnings and knowledge with other makeup enthusiasts.” He continues, “My motto in life is to keep on studying and learning. Never hesitate to develop new creations. Failure from the past should be taken positively and motivate us to be more creative.”

STARLET The starlets road to fame is not always an easy one. The main goal is to reach that walk of fame and some times it is easiest done by a short cut on the walk of shame. Anyway these starlets have found their fifteen minutes in the spot light and you can in all likelihood find them in Las Vegas.

In this story we teach you how to perfect eye symetry. Master the game of shadows - with small tricks your eyeshadow can do wonders. The following tips are easily reproducible. If your eyes are set deep, lift them with lighter colors. Circumscribe the natural lash line with Angel Brush and Microshadow Pollution. Press the shadow in between the lashes to create a defined line without expending space on the thin eyelid. Apply a darker eyeshadow in the crease line and add a lighter eyeshadow on the eyelid and below the arch of the brow. Curl your lashes with Eyelash Curler Metal before you add mascara to open up your eyes. Complete the look with Eyepencil Vanilla inside the lash line to magnify the appearance of your eyes. A light eyeshadow across the entire eyelid, from the lashes to the crease line, makes your eyes look bigger. Microshadow Muffin with its pearly shimmer or the mattifying Microshadow Vanilla are good primers. Firstly, color inside the lower lash line with Eyepencil Vanilla. Thereafter, apply eyeshadow, such as Microshadow Smog, in the crease line with Eyepencil Small and blend well. Also apply some of the dark eyeshadow in the lower lash line with Angel Brush. Add a light highlighter, such as Microshadow Muffin, below the arch of the eyebrow and in the inner corner of the eye towards the nose. Complete the look with mascara.

Perfect lipstick in five steps: 1. Make sure that the lips are thoroughly remoistened. Use lip balm as a base if they feel dry. 2. Fill in the contour of the lips with a wellsharpened lip pencil of the same colour as the lipstick. To avoid the colour from bleeding out into small lines, Le Brett and smudge in the pencil into all the small lines with the help of a lip pencil. 3. Apply the lipstick with a brush. Keep just inside of the contour of the lips 4. Bite off the lipstick using a piece of paper and apply a little powder to the lips. 5. Apply another layer of lipstick and top with lipgloss if you want a glossy finish or powder if you want a matt finish.

M  |  101

If your eyes are narrowly set, you should apply lighter eyeshadows in the inner corner of the eye, both on top and underneath the eyelid. In the outer end of the eye, use darker eyeshadows and apply eyeliner. Extend a delicate line towards the temple to elongate the eye. Complete the look with mascara, adding extra coats to the outer lashes.

A lot of mascara on the lower eyelashes balances up strongly shaded eyelids. Measure the false eyelashes against the eye and cut to the right length before applying them. Better too short a row than too long, which will weigh down the eyes. Curve the eyelashes using eyelash tweezers, then attach the false eyelashes and apply the mascara last; in this way you blend the false eyelashes with your own in the best possible way. M  |  102

Allow the eyelash glue to dry for a few seconds before fastening the false eyelashes. When the glue is rubbery, it is easier to apply the lashes in the right place. Choose false eyelashes with transparent edges for a natural look and false eyelashes with a black edge when you want a more made-up look.

Heavy eyelids can magically disappear by applying a darker eyeshadow across the entire eyelid and blending upwards towards the crease line. Add a light eyeshadow as a highlighter from the crease line towards the eyebrow. Only use matte colors, because shimmery eyeshadows tend to emphasize heavy eyelids. To make round eyes appear more almond-shaped, add a dark eyeshadow on the entire eyelid. Eyeliner can be drawn along the upper and lower lash lines to make your eyes look thinner.

Makeup tips for thin eyes. Use a light highlighter on the center of the eyelid and below the arch of the eyebrow. Add a darker eyeshadow on the outer end of the upper eyelid. Apply Eyepencil Vanilla inside the lash line but do not use eyeliner. If your eyes are set wide apart, you can make them appear closer by covering the entire eyelid with a dark eyeshadow. The color should not fade out towards the temples but end next to the upper lash line.

A light reflecting liquid concealer or shimmering powder applied to the highlights of the face creates a more sculpted, emphasized face. Good places for emphasis are the cheekbone and eyebrow bone. M  |  104

How to curl your eyelashes. Open the tong and position the lashes between the rubber strip and the upper end of the apparatus. Thereafter, curl your lashes in three consecutive steps. First clamp the section closest to the roots, followed by the midsection and complete the process by curling the tips. Use the tong for a few seconds during each step. A flirtier gaze can be created by curling your eyelashes. Always curl nude lashes to prevent damage. Treat your lashes with the smoothening Treatment Mascara.

Jonas Hallberg TEXT BY: Maria Luthelius PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Andreas Kock

Jonas Hallberg is Hollywood’s new star stylist. Here, he tells about his glamorous, un-Swedish style which has made him popular with celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jessica Alba and Mary Louise Parker. Jonas Hallberg is wearing a T-shirt from Dolce & Gabbana, a pair of gray Levis jeans, black sunglasses from Ralph Lauren and a pair of sneakers, limited edition from Barney’s in Beverly Hills. “I often wear jeans, a T-shirt and sneakers when I work. What I wear is not important. I am much more committed to the style of the stars”, he says. Jonas Hallberg grew up in Köping and is now a member of the staff surrounding all of Hollywood’s celebrities. How did that happen? He explains that he has always wanted to get to Hollywood. He started his career as an assistant to some Swedish fashion stylists. Three years later he was self-sufficient and eventually came into contact with an agent in Hollywood. ”My first job was with Scarlett Johansson. It led to jobs for Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jessica Alba and Cameron Diaz. It’s like rings on the water. One job led to the next. If you function well with stars and the people who book the stylists, things just keep rolling”, explains Jonas Hallberg. His glamorous style and earthy way have been a successful combination. He has styled many celebrities for galas, red carpets as well as for exclusive magazines and advertising jobs. He is even hired by the starts as a personal shopper. What is the recipe for success? ”My success is mainly due to me working hard

and being good at what I do. However, I am easy to collaborate with. I give the stars space. I am very conscious of not being a star myself. It’s enough with one star in the room”, laughs Jonas Hallberg. Usually the stars are easy to deal with. Few are divas. “Often, they are just like anyone else, some are shy”, he says. “The problem is time pressure and that the stars have a staff of many people surrounding them who want to have their say in everything. Most jobs are problem free. But sure, there is drama sometimes. He doesn’t want to mention any names, but remembers one celebrity who was in a TV-series. The test shoot was going to be made during the night, due to a pressed recording schedule. It took Jonas two hours to get there by car. When the star finally showed up, she was in a terrible temper. Instead of trying on the dresses he had chosen, she threw them around like a defiant three year old. He just had to return home again and try once again the next day. “Then, she got to try on the dresses during the daytime at her home instead. That worked out much better”, he says. Despite the success in Hollywood he hasn’t forgotten Stockholm. He mixes jobs at home in Sweden with jobs in the USA; one month here and one month there. He enjoys working just as much in Sweden as in the USA. The difference is, that as a stylist in Hollywood he has literally unlimited accessibility to gala dresses, shoes and jewellery worth many millions of Swedish crowns. Despite this, it is not always easy to style a star. While the super-model is long, slim and easily slips into anything, the film star can be M  |  107

short and curvy with a wide backside. “It’s a challenge to work with stars compared with top models” states Jonas Hallberg. “It requires a lot of trix and fix. Everything must be perfect when she walks the red carpet in front of at least 200 million TV-watchers all over the word. But I really love my job!” Jonas Hallberg’s style is characterized by the simple. He does not like too many accessories, but willingly high heels and a small pouchette. He leaves nothing to chance. He is always careful that the stars have perfect hair and makeup. The overall impression means everything. “My girls are strong individuals. They are beautiful, sexy and glamorous, regardless of figure. The stars should quite simply look like stars.” He is inspired by old Hollywood stars such as Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner. “It has to the classical, super-elegant touch!” His favourite designers are Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy. “That is the top layer, which is common in Hollywood. On the red carpet there is a lot of name dropping and prestige”. Among Swedish designers, he appreciates Acne’s Jonny Johansson. He also likes Ann-Sofie Back’s fun and somewhat nutty designs. And naturally, he also admires the fashion designer Lars Wallin’s fantastic creations. He predicts that “In the long run, even these Swedish designers could be used for the celebrities”. What will he be doing personally further on in the future? Jonas Hallberg laughs: “Probably the same thing I am doing today. However, I like Africa. Maybe I will live in Zanzibar and raise dolphins”.

Alexandra Charles TEXT BY: Maria Luthelius PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Alexandra Charles

For 20 years, she was the Queen of the nightclubs in Europe and Stockholm. Jetsetting celebrities like Roger Moore, Mick Jagger and David Bowie would flock to her club. Today, she is the helping angel who works full-time as the President of the 1,6 Million Club. M Magazine presents Alexandra Charles! “It is dangerous to be a woman”, Alexandra Charles states. She knows what she is talking about. As the President of the 1,6 Million Club (the number of women in Sweden exceeding the age of 45 years), she is knowledgeable about the subject matter. When she founded the organization 10 years ago, medical research was largely based on a male standard of normalcy. This biased norm comprimized the effectiveness of emergency care and medication for women. Although the field of medical research has evolved notably in the past decade, there is still room for improvement. “The symptoms of older women during heart infarction, for instance, do not correspond to that of younger men. This means that women can get an incorrect diagnosis in primary health care, which could have hazardous consequences.” The 1,6 Million Club actively lobbies for a change in society regarding medical care, health, medical research and geriatric nursing. The core of the organization consists of Alexandra Charles and other ambitious women; such as opera singer Kjerstin Dellert, performers Lill Lindfors and Barbro Svensson, designer Gunilla Pontén and actresses Christina Schollin and Solveig Ternström. Despite turning 60, Alexandra has no intention of slowing down. Worries about ageing? Not at all. She feels that her age has its benefits.

“I find it positive to age. Through the years, I have learned more about myself. I have become more venturous and I can stand up for myself. I take part in the public debate and I take initiative. When I was younger, I was more cautious. All these years have given me a wonderful gift that I could never get through studying. It is about life experience. Life gives us experience, wisdom and understanding.” “On the other hand, I have become more humble through the years. I have realized that I know very little about the big picture”, she continues and laughs. “My friend, Lill Lindfors, always says: ‘Who wants to retire? It is better to be passionate!’” The fact that mature women can be passionate is widely known. Not surprisingly, many young men dream of elegant women with life experience. Alexandra Charles laughs delightedly at the statement, but men are absent in her world. “Haha... That sounds really wonderful. Where are they? To be honest, I work so much and spend most of my time with women that I can’t boast about flirting with young men.” It was different before. Back in the days, men used to flock around Alexandra Charles. Together with her then-husband, Noel Charles, she opened the international nightclub ‘Alexandra’ in the center of Stockholm. International singers who traveled to Stockholm would also pay a visit to the club; including David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Burt Reynolds, Elton John, Tom Jones and Roger Moore. She periodically misses those times. “’Alexandra’ was where it all happened; there was a wonderful vibe.” She is, nevertheless, happy about being able to shun the demanding working hours. The smokey premises also took a toll on her health. M  |  115

Although less frequently than in the past, she likes to go out and dine with friends. She misses a place where people of all ages can meet. To make it more dynamic, she would gladly mix different types of people. “It is always exciting to hear the thoughts of young people.” Even her relationship to cosmetics has changed through the years. Though she has always been interested in makeup, she has gradually become more cautious about selecting products that are nurturing to her skin. She is not opposed to cosmetic surgery, as long as young people avoid it. “It is sad to see how young girls are discontent with themselves. Media has created an ideal image on how women should look like. Despite the fact that it is the inside that counts. We should be better at teaching young people about values that trancend the surface. Charm and personality are always nice!” The 1,6 Million Club’s calendar with wonderful pictures of men and women is a good example of how everyone is beautiful. The calendar is issued by the publishing company ‘Prisma’ and proceeds go to the Center for Genderrelated Medicine at Karolinska Institutet. “In the calendar, we show that everyone is beautiful in their own way!” She believes that her persistent driving force can be attributed to good genes. As the oldest of four siblings, Alexandra Charles is used to being stubborn, focused and dedicated. “For the past eleven years, I have felt that it is important to do something that is valuable. I want to make a change regarding inequality and injustice. But for leaders and politicians to listen, we must unite and fight for a common cause. In Sweden alone, we could be 1,6 million women!”

Roland Hjort TEXT BY: Maria Luthelius PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Pierre Björk

Roland Hjort is founder and head designer at Swedish Whyred. He is inspired by the arts and has designed underwear with drawings by the artist Jockum Nordström as well as bags with motifs by the artist Roger Andersson. Now, this fall, another collection is being introduced with a motif by a well known Swedish artist. So far it is a secret. How do you pronounce Whyred? As it sounds? Wrong. The right way is: Why red. Roland Hjort borrowed the name from a much discussed interview with his maternal grandfather, the famous artist Sven X:et Erixon. A radio reporter asked X:et what his favourite colour was. ”Red”, answered his grandfather. ”Why red?” ”Well, blue then.” “The arts have always been a part of my childhood. Our walls were filled with paintings. I appreciate it, but I have never thought about becoming an artist”, says Roland Hjort. His grandfather’s artistry has however, worked as a source of inspiration when it came to choosing a profession. Design is closely tied to the arts and can also be seen as a way of expressing yourself. “Grandfather created art for the people, I make clothes for the people”, laughs Roland Hjort. Whyred’s sporty off-track fashion is appreciated by musicians such as The Hives, Robin

and Sahara Hotnights. However, even the American actress Kirsten Dunst and the Swedish dramatist and clothes snob Lars Norén wear garments from Whyred. Roland Hjort founded the company in 1998 together with Jonas Clason and Lena Patriksson Keller. To start with, the company only ventured into men’s garments but later expanded the product range with clothes for girls, bags and accessories. Today, Roland Hjort is the head designer and manages both men’s clothes as well as the women’s line. Roland Hjort’s designs are distinguished by contrasts. He enjoys combining the traditional with the modern. As an example he mentions a classical wool jacket which is lined with modern sporting details. He even likes to redo the garments; a classic trench coat or a pair of jeans may receive a new silhouette. Two years ago Whyred was awarded a prize as the year’s best designer at the Ellegala, they were nominated two times previously for the award. “It was unbelievably pleasant to be awarded the prize at last. We see it as an acknowledgement. In fact it means that we have more eyes on us, but the daily work was not changed overtly. However, it is a nice prize to have in your pocket”, states Roland Hjort. Despite the arts, music plays a large role in M  |  125

Roland Hjort’s life. Right now he listens a lot to Talking Heads. In some ways the music’s influence can be seen in his designs, but he doesn’t really know how. It’s more about a feeling; it’s difficult to put into words. “Bowie has always influenced me; his different styles mirror my designs. I try not to be predictable”. One year ago, Roland became a father. With the daughter, his life changed radically. Instead of late nights out, it was early mornings in the comfort of his own home. “I have, in fact, become even more focused on my work since I had a child”, says a satisfied Roland. “I have unquestionably taken things easier during the last year and cut back on the partying; that in itself is inspiring. The nearest plan for the future of Whyred is the continued introduction on the international market. The clothing company has, at present, two boutiques in Stockholm and a very nice recently opened boutique in Copenhagen. Whyred is also represented in hundreds of boutiques all over the world. Just now, things are going best in Japan, where Whyred is represented in 40 boutiques. However, the company is also venturing into England and France. “The goal is to grow in a healthy and satisfying way”.

Make Up Store has three different types of eye shadows; Microshadow, Cybershadow and Eyedust. Brand new colours are released every season with the looks. There are no less than 150 different shades to choose from. The eye shadows are manufactured with a special technique called Micronized where the eye shadow is run through a sling to make the pigments as small as possible. The same process is used when producing pharmaceuticals. The secret behind the long-lasting formula and colourful shades is the technique. Small and highly-concentrated pigments make the eye shadows smooth as silk and truly colourful, besides their long-lasting effect...

Alejandra´s three favorites: all the eyelashes bronzing powders for the face Fresh Rose Blush

Step by step, Alejandra will climb all the way to the top of a highly competitive industry; carefully not to burn herself out. She has a message: music has a way of healing you and your thoughts. And she surely has the voice and talent AND NOT TO ABIDE she has an audience. Alejandra is what a whole new Latin generation has been waiting for, a brand new voice. M  |  148

– profile artist usa –

Alejandra Alberti TEXT BY: Peter Hammar PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Rodrigo Varela

Born out of a love for music from her Mexican mother and Cuban father, the vocalist and drummer in a band, Alejandra surely possesses the right set of genes for a brilliant future within music. She recently won the award for Best New Artist at the Latin GRAMMY Awards in the US and we are thrilled to see what is next in line for this sizzling new Latin star. She does not want to fall into the ordinary Latino category of Shakira and Iglesias. People expect you to sing a certain way when your are Latin, but there is a whole new generation of musicians out there singing independent music that do not conform to your stereotypical Latin music. Alejandra writes all her songs herself and they are all about family and personal experiences that touch the listener on a personal level. It is a fusion of pop, rock and R&B. It is the sound of a new generation and it has only just begun. How would you describe yourself as an artist? - I’m a singer/songwriter that uses personal experiences and different tastes in music to write and record. I’m lucky enough to have this as a career and I get to wake up loving what I do. Tell me about your career and education. - Its been difficult juggling both simultaneously. I graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and a Major in Marketing. Now, I have more time to dedicate myself to my music and promotion. The album has been out for about a year and a half, which we’ve promoted and done concerts around the US. The first album was nominated for a Latin Grammy under the Best New Artist category. Do you spend a lot of attention to style and beauty, looking so good?

-My interest in style and beauty began when I was young. I don’t focus a lot on beauty. I believe that the more natural, the better. My style changes with time. I’ve gone through the rocker stage and right now I’m exploring my feminine side by wearing more dresses. Style also depends on mood, so everyday is different. So far in your career, what has been your biggest thrill? -The most exciting highlights of my career have been the concerts and being at the Latin Grammys with all these talented and highly respected colleagues. Do you have any tips to young aspiring artists? - My advice to those who want to be in this industry, is to be very patient. Sometimes it takes longer to reach your goals, but once you start moving forward, everything falls into place. Attitude is very important as well. Have a positive energy, be loyal to your roots, work more to improve your art and look for opportunities. What is happening right now in your career? -At this moment, I’m on tour around the US and Puerto Rico. We will be filming very soon the video for my third single off the album. Also, I’m in the studio writing and working with the next album. Where do you think the future in beauty is heading? - I don’t know what the future of beauty, style or fashion will be, but trends always recycle themselves. I just hope that, in regards to beauty, women will embrace their natural beauty. What are your plans for the future? -Who knows where I will be, but I hope that I can continue writing songs, recording albums and being happy with what I’ve accomplished. M  |  149

Hopefully, from here to 10 years, I would be doing what I’ve always wanted, which is to do concerts worldwide. Do you follow any guiding stars? -My motto is to just live life the best way possible, be happy, love and take care of those close to you and don’t conform to mediocracy. The life of an artist can be very stressful. What are your tricks to stay so naturally fresh? -I drink a lot of water and leave the rest of the beauty help to the wonderful people at MAKE UP STORE Miami, who can make me feel beautiful, even on 6 am wakeup calls. At the same time, looking good is not always an advantage. People automatically think that looking good means that you can´t sing. Which look is your own favorite? - My favorite look is a natural makeup. I don’t like to wear too much. I only wear a lot when it is necessary. Who would you want to name your all-time style favorite? -My ultimate beauty icon would be Audrey Hepburn, because back then there was no photoshop and she was absolutely gorgeous. If you have to get ready in just minutes, how would you go about it? -If I had to get ready in 10 minutes, I would wear a tank top and jeans. Then, just put on mascara, lipgloss and blush. Do you have any beauty tips you can share with our readers? -The best beauty trick that has worked for years is to wash my face in the morning and at night. Always follow with moisturizer.

Night Time You can also embellish your style by matching the color of your frames with that of your cosmetics. A pair of black glasses with black smokey eyes creates a sexy and daring look. Matching red or pink frames with a similar shade of lipstick gives a harmonious wholeness to your face. For a more natural look, combine matte colors in earthy tones with brown or marble brown spectacles. We have chosen glasses which really broaden the face with somewhat larger frames. The model has a warm complexion; we have chosen glasses which are a cold contrast. There is a lot to think about when choosing eyeglasses... but remember that they are an accessory, have many and have fun with your eyeglasses! M  |  151

– How to wear your glasses with style –

A heart shaped face Day time Here, we want to soften up the lines, this is important when you choose eyeglasses. The eyebrows should be visible above the glasses. Select a model that is most appropriate for the overall shape of your face. A simple method is to select glasses that reproportion your face equally from the center. If your face is rectangular, frames in softer shapes are more suitable. Narrow jaws and a wide forehead can be counterbalanced using thin glasses with wide temples. Oblong faces will appear smaller with straight glasses. Glasses with straight and distinct lines complement rounder faces. Night Time Use Eyeprimer underneath eyeshadows if eyewear makes you warm. Eyeprimer Tinted has a covering effect and also functions as a light concealer. Use the product in addition to Reflex Cover to neutralize dark rings and tone down possible shadows from your glasses. The light formula in Reflex Cover is adapted to the delicate skin around the eyes. Its light-reflecting pigments will lighten dark regions and give your skin a nice luster. The glasses should steal the attention from the cheek bone which may otherwise become too emphasized. The lips and eyebrows are very important when choosing glasses and makeup. M  |  153

– How to wear your glasses with style –

A square, heart shaped face Day time Here, we have chosen small glasses so as not to remove the focus from the face, but to accent it only. It is important to think about being shortsighted or far-sighted, as the eye becomes enlarged or reduced in the glass of the eyeglasses. This is very important, since when the eye looks larger, thanks to the glass, we have to reduce the makeup and if they look smaller in the glass we have to add more makeup so that the eye can be seen, not just the eyeglasses. A flawless base will even out your skin tone and define the color of your glasses. Fixate the foundation and concealer with powder. M  |  154

Night Time If your frames are striking, brows should be plucked so that they are nicely exposed above the frames. Afterwards, fill your eyebrows with Tri Brow using Angel Brush for a natural look. Tri Brow is a very popular product and was recently awarded by the Swedish readers of Cosmopolitan in the 2008 edition of the Cosmopolitan Beauty Awards. Glasses which sharply contrast the makeup. This is another method. Glasses with lovely frames because others also view you from the side. M  |  155

– How to wear your glasses with style –

A more oval and round face Day time Here, neutral glasses were chosen which don’t ruin the face; they only accent the complexion and colour of the glasses. Almost straight, somewhat larger glasses will not disappear in the face. Take into consideration how the glasses sit on the nose. To enhance your look, highlight the apex of your cheekbones. The technique can also have an elongating effect on petite faces. M  |  156

Night Time For an enticing result, curl your lashes with Heated Eyelash Curler before you coat them with Long Lash Mascara Dark Brown. Add a soft eyeliner in a pleasant contrasting color by mixing Mixing Liquid and Eyedust. Glasses are like an accessory, they adorn the face. We have chosen glasses which are gold in colour; even the makeup has this tendency. An upward striving feeling from the glasses is similar to the eye form of the model. M  |  157

– How to wear your glasses with style –

A mix of a square and oval face Day time Soften up the face with glasses that are more upward bending, in this case only a little. Do you have problems applying your makeup without your glasses? Order a pair of makeup glasses with your specific lens strength and flip down the lens in front of the eye receiving makeup. M  |  158

Night Time Match boldly colored frames with lip shades to balance the style. Lip color can be discrete but painted lips are paramount if you wish to harmonize your look. Thanks to their soft colors, Lippencil Golden Purple and Lipstick Poppy suit most people. Here, we have chosen glasses which will suit an oval face, one that broadens the whole face, somewhat wider glasses will make things a little more interesting as well. M  |  159

Lift out the best in yourself and play with colours and lashes but retain the harmony in your makeup. Focus on the lips and let them speak clearly. By forming a cleanly outlined eye with lovely eye shadows, a soft globular line and perfectly formed eye liner, you give your eye a lift. False eye lashes don’t need to be over-dimensioned; they can be natural in both length and form, performing a miracle on your eye and makeup. At Make Up Store you will find a number of products which allow you to easily create pure artwork on your lips. Matt Foundation is laid as a base followed by Loose Powder Milk to create an almost doll-like look. Naturally, you can choose another tone which suits your colouring exactly, but Loose Powder is exceptional for this purpose. To achieve precise, soft, but marked eyebrows, you use Duo Brow. To give the eyes a harmonious but soft global line, you mix Microshadow Tie and Champagne. The eyelash Small is perfectly suited to maintain a natural, but marked row of eyelashes. Black Cake Eyeliner gives intensely black, perfect eyeliner. For the lips, you use the soft lip pencil on the lower lip and then you mix Eyedust Sunset with Blend & Fix and apply it to the upper lip. You finish off with the Lipgloss Virgin to fix the colour and really get the lids to glow. M  |  160

Keep the foundation clean and ethereal; mix Sport Foundation with Skin Serum for a natural but covering result. Use the Eyelash Miss, cut small pieces and attach with eyelash glue adhesive. Blend & Fix Microshadow Aquarius Lippgloss Virgin

A clean makeup and colourful lips are nearly always a successful choice. If you don’t have much time, it is the perfect time to do this type of makeup. Mix, Blend & Fix Microshadow Aquarius to get a true, deep-blue colour and finish off by applying Lipgloss Virgin to give the lips a high gloss. M  |  163

Apply Aroma Balm to the lips first so they don’t become dry and chapped and so that the black Lipstick Down will be fully enhanced and really looks black. Then apply e.g. 111 to achieve a truly black colour using one of our lip brushes of real hair. Finally, take a Strazz diamond and attach using Eyelash Glue. You not only achieve a luxurious look, but also an eye-catching makeup which you can easily touch up in a few minutes.

Blackout, a moment of temporary absent-mindedness; consciously or unconsciously, a way the mind to temporarily protect itself from outer attacks or for strong feelings of expression. 1940s. The Second World War erupted and makeup was sparce, like many other items in war-ravaged Europe. Shoe cream was, for instance, used as a substitute for mascara. The icons of the time included Katherine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and Bette Davis. ‘Healthy Glow’ was the expression of the decade and the more fully-shaped lips were colored in a warm orange red tone. The eyebrows, although defined in the shape of a broken oar, were preferably natural and full. The crease line was shaded in natural matte colors.

1950s. During this decade, two ideal icons were very popular: The voluptuous and sensual Marilyn Monroe and the ravishing Audrey Hepburn. Brigitte Bardot was yet another icon and sex symbol. Marilyn’s makeup consisted of a natural base and perfect eyebrows (in the shape of a broken oar). Light pearly shadow in a green or blue tone across the entire eyelid. Sweeping eyeliner and false eyelashes. A round and fresh rouge and of course a mole. The lips were colored in a bold shade of red. Although similar, Audrey’s makeup consisted of brown and natural nuances. Brigitte Bardot sported pale lips and overstated smokey eyes.

1960s. The Op Trend was born and consisted of graphic patterns in black and white. “Make Love, Not War” was the motto and icons included Twiggy, Barbara Streisand and Jackie Kennedy. Eyeliner and false eyelashes were absolute must-haves. False eyelashes could even be drawn directly on the skin with eyeliner. Apart from black and white, turqouise and purple were other popular colors. The lips were pale, pale, pale.

During the 1970s, two makeup styles dominated. The first style consisted of natural colors with brown eyeshadows, darker lip liner and light lipstick or lipgloss. The other style entailed a light blue eyeshadow across the entire eyelid and glitter highlighter under the eyebrows. The lipstick was either pink or nude. The second style was clearly influenced by disco glam. With Nina Hagen as an icon, the 1970s saw the birth of punk. The look involved a pale makeup base with black, smeared out eyes. Eye makeup, which would later comprise hints of red and green, also became more elaborate and artistic.

1980s. The Upside-Down Age! The typical makeup consisted of a cacophony of bright colors. Colored mascara was a must-have! Other paramount trends included kohl inside the lash lines and overstated rouge. The brows were bushy and cold colors were easily mixed with warm colors. 1990s. Personal style dominated the catwalks and the original supermodels also enjoyed a Golden Age of success. The girls who reigned the world of fashion included Emma Sjöberg, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford. The 1990s also saw the birth of ‘Heroin Chic’; a look that has survived and involves a pale base, pale lips and smokey eyes.

Teri Niitti TEXT BY: Peter Hammar PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Sakari Majantie

Having over the years established himself as one of Finland’s absolute top stylists and trend analysists, Teri can truly be proud of himself. He has worked with all major clients within the industry of fashion, editorials and beauty. Teri defines style in a world where everybody else follows. Meet Mr Style Teri Niitti. A first glance at this young man immediately reveals his Finnish background; those strong features can only be from up North. His boyish charm and looks radiate happiness and behind those blue eyes sparkles impulsive genuineness all in a creative organized mess. Tell me about your career and education. After basic education, I went to a specialized high school for arts which opened my mind to the world of color and form. After completing my military service, I took a Master’s degree in Fashion Design in the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and abroad… Which is the path I still more or less follow! My interest on beauty and fashion started at an early age. My grandmother was a painter and the world of arts and creativity was encouraged in my family, which is otherwise predominated by mining engineers… I guess it’s the usual story of playing with your sister’s Barbies and drawing a LOT of princesses… (Laughter) Actually, Egyptology and that field of aesthetics was very close to my heart as a child (heavy eyeliners, HUH?) so it’s been an ongoing process of self-exploration and re-invention. During your career, which is/are the most exiting assignments? Always seems to be the next one, thank God! I just did a big Fashion Show in Paris for contemporary Finnish Fashion Design, which was personally and professionally very exciting. I’d still say that I love doing editorials and beauty the most. Do you have any advice for those who want to be in the style/beauty/fashion industry? In my opinion, you already have what you need or you don’t. Schools can give you (only)

tools and, personally, I would say communication, because it is essential in teamwork if you want stunning end results. Aim to work with people you admire. I arrived today from Hamburg, where I did a commercial with my favorite makeup artist and photographer. It was more editorial than advertising, and I was very happy with that. Now, I am working with my travel expense bills, which is exciting as hell… After midsummer, I’ll travel to Rome to see a collection I will be shooting in Paris with a Swedish photographer in July… Enough said! Good stuff coming along. What do you think is the future in fashion? UUUUH what a question… I think honesty goes a long way, so I see neo-nineties and re-cocooning with lots of downgrading and bareness. Very demanding times for people within the industry, since decoration is not there to fool the inexperienced voyeur. Naturally, it will be supported by key elements of the era, but my crystal ball shows a glamorless but still well-thought and skillfully crafted future in fashion and beauty. Postproduction takes an even more massive role in the business of producing beauty and fashion images, and more artificial work becomes acceptable, but goes unnoticed at the same time. Good times for the Nordic way of thinking and seeing things. Enchanted, bare, supernatural. What are you doing in 10 years? Dreams and hopes. I will still be doing styling/designing for the beauty and fashion industry. Perhaps more product development, conceptual work and writing. Traveling a lot and being inspired and astonished by the people, thoughts and beauty around me. Interpreting it and telling new stories through visuals and words. Do you have a motto? Exceed expectations. On fashion shows and photo shoots, it can be stressful. What are your beauty tips and tricks on stage? Thank God, I deal with the concepts, wardrobe and visuals and have stunning professionals to M  |  175

rely on the subject of makeup and beauty. Personally, drink a hell of a lot of water. Which one is your favorite look? Motivate. I like a model when she comes to the studio washed, moisturized and with clean hair. It’s a delicate moment where everything is possible. That’s my favorite. Sounds odd since I am well-known for creating fairly strong looks and having lots of stuff done; but it’s never as pure, as nude, so that’s my favorite. It also requires a huge amount of skill. Who are your beauty icons? Motivate. Well, fashionwise it has to be my mother – she was diagnosed with shortened muscles on the back of her legs for always wearing high heels! Which celebrity is best in styled? Motivate. This is a thing you can and have to buy nowadays, so it has a lot less to do about yourself and more about your ability to shop well and know people. My list would be the ever typical from Madonna to Dita to Agyness. If you have to get a model ready in 10 minutes, how would you create a style? Get great glasses and a cool hat and you will be done in a minute! Do you have any beauty tricks you want to share with the readers of M Magazine? If it feels good, wear it – makeup or clothing. The actual visual is just half of it and presenting yourself in the right way goes a long way. The best-looking models or celebrities often look fairly awful, when they are not aware of being observed. You can find out more about Teris work at: www.teriniitti.com

Lip pencils not only prolong the longevity of lip makeup. Camouflage your natural lip line with a concealer in the same color as your foundation and modify the contours of your lips with a sharpened lip pencil. Always match your foundation to the color of your chest, not the jawline. With the recent trend of spray tans and SPF-infused face creams, the color on the face and body can be very different! It would be terrible to take a photo and later discover that your face and neck are three shades lighter than your cleavage! Not a good look...

Make sure your skin is hydrated before applying your base. This way, your skin will remain soft and velvet-like! A canvas so flawless, others will become jealous of you!

Option 2) FOR CONTOURING, always sweep from the hollow underneath your cheeks at ear level to your bottom lip. By sweeping the product inwards, the color will gradually fade out by the time you reach the apple of your cheeks. Don’t forget to blend and check your blush from the sides to make sure it does not resemble sideburns! M  |  182

Your body is your temple, and it needs to be tended to in the best manner possible. It is the finest and most valuable instrument ever created, but it also has to harmonize with the inner you. We believe in exercise that shapes and strengthens both body and soul.

– family member australia –

Maria Gabriel Ertas TEXT BY: Keryn O’Donnell PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Mick Bruzzese

Maria Gabriel Ertas, General Manager of Make Up Store Australia, is enjoying the sweet taste of success and satisfaction as the brand spreads far and wide throughout the land of Oz. Described as a breath of fresh air by the industry Maria’s love and dedication for both Make Up Store and cosmetics in general, has seen the success of Make Up Store Australia grow in its three busy years, and she is still hungry for more. She remains instrumental in every business decision made, major and minor, ensuring that the Make Up Store brand is represented exactly as Mika, Olle, and the rest of the team have created it to be. Maria became a part of the Make Up Store phenomenon in 2005 when she and her family (two brothers, sister and relative) decided to introduce the brand to the sunny shores of ‘down under’ Australia. There is no question that bringing Make Up Store was a huge decision for Maria and her extended family. With family in New York, London, Sweden and in Australia they decided together that there was a clear gap in the Australian market for great quality cosmetics that also has such a huge range of colours. The brand is also distinctive because of its schooling history and Maria was particularly interested in this. Mika’s vision began in 1990 as a makeup school and he then added an independent beauty and cosmetics brand in 1996. With Make Up Store being such a global leader and setting trends in the market place, the family decided to bring the brand to Australia in 2002. Following huge amounts of research, constant strategy discussions in Australia and Sweden and continuous meetings with the Stockholm head office leadership team, the deal was done and Make Up Store was eventually launched with a huge bang in November 2005. Maria comes from a strong background of customer service and management. She is the key representative and the face of Make Up Store in Australia. Regularly seen in each of the stores, she still manages to work on the floor with her busy schedule, ensuring that she is always in touch with her customers and staff. Each staff member is trained personally by Maria, and works in store with her in the initial stages of their employment. This is to ensure that they carry the level of professionalism, knowledge, and excitement that Maria expects of anybody representing the Make Up Store. “All focus is on the customer being our priority, understanding their needs and exceeding their expectations” says Maria.

Maria certainly knows the brand inside out. Not only has she worked the floors of the stores in Stockholm, but she was also trained by Olle Johannson, head make up artist and product developer of Make Up Store. For a number of months, Maria spent every day by Olle’s side, watching, listening, learning, and absorbing every piece of information and knowledge he could offer her to bring back to Australia. Maria says the key lesson that Olle taught her was “…everybody has two eyes, a nose, and lips. It’s what you do to compliment their features that make the difference. We can bring out the beauty in everybody; you just need to know how to work with your skills and their assets.” These wise words have given Maria the confidence she needs (and she passes this advice onto her staff). “With that understanding in mind, I know I can achieve anything a customer requests when they walk through the door. It doesn’t matter what nationality, what age, gender or the state of their skin, all I do is focus on accentuating the beauty in everyone. Seeing customers walk out with a new found confidence is truly uplifting.” The first two years of Make Up Store has seen three stores successfully open in the tough Sydney market, and when asked if the company will move into other cities, Maria is certain that Make Up Store will be popping up in every capital city before you know it. “I’m always asked when we will be opening in other cities around the country” says Maria. At the moment she is fulfilling the needs of the Make Up Store addicts interstate, with floods of phone orders completed on a regular basis. With new store projects in the pipeline, Maria is tightlipped about the next city to be hit with Make Up Store and its world of colours, but she states that the team is “so excited about getting Make Up Store out into the Australian market wherever possible”. In fact, Maria is pleasantly surprised by interest in Make Up Store from a business standpoint. She happily reveals that “from day one we have had hundreds of franchise enquiries. People get on our website and can contact us about it. In such a short time we had hundreds and hundreds of interested parties. Now the question is about strategy in growing the brand. We want to focus on a steady growth and create a brand in the market which grows not on the building of the stores but on building the loyalty and word of mouth of customers. With this foundation underneath us, you will see Make Up Store just continue to grow. We M  |  185

will be unstoppable!” The media is another channel that is constantly exposing Make Up Store throughout the country. With regular visits from beauty editors for private lessons, Maria says “It’s so exciting to see big-name beauty professionals leaving our store with a wealth of knowledge, a bag full of Make Up Store products, and a new love for the brand”. Maria also states “the media is very supportive here and I’m overwhelmed with how much press we receive on a weekly basis. But the press coverage doesn’t stop there. Make Up Store Paddington was recently chosen as the Number 1 Sydney shopping destination by a top Fashion publication in Japan.” Many Australian and international celebrities and make up artists have been through the doors of Make Up Store in Australia and are becoming fast supporters of the brand. Singer, Deni Hines can often be seen browsing through the array of products, topping up her goodie bag, Natalie Bassingthwaite, singer and host of Australia’s ‘So you think you can dance’ also stocked up on Make Up Store fabulous eyelashes and a collection of other products. Top Australian Make Up Artists, Dotti, Rae Morris and Nigel Stanislaus, are just a few of the many make up artists who also drop in to see Maria and the team to regularly stock up their kits with Make Up Store treats. One of the reported trade favourites are the creamy eye pencils, which are fast becoming a staple item in every professional’s makeup kit. Make Up Store Australia is really going to new heights in the industry, having worked on popular TV program such as ‘The Biggest Loser’. The brand also participates in charity events, designer shows, music and entertainment events such as the Arias. The team took part in a number of shows at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in April 08, having also participated in shows at previous fashion weeks. Make Up Store is being inundated with requests to be involved in some of Sydney’s most exclusive social events. For Maria, and the team at Make Up Store Australia, the forecast is sunny and bright (as Aussie weather should be). With the staff and customer base constantly expanding, the business ventures getting bigger and better, and the Make Up Store name getting more publicity than ever before, Maria couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds for the brand in Australia.

September 30 and October 30 MAKE UP STORE WILL PRESENT OUR NEW INSPIRATION WHISPER The Whisper Woman is graceful and hard to get. Her cool beauty is defined by tender skin, black smoky eyes that glow in the dark and violet red lips. On the dance floor of the ball, she floats forth to the tones of the violins. Her hair, makeup and clothes radiate a fantastically complete definition of perfection. MAKE UP STORE has found inspiration from seductive darkness and created a cool and classic beauty. The collection will be launched with a fragrance by the name of Whisper. The fragrance starts off with rich tones of sandalwood, musk and patchouli. It is followed by a soft transition to flowery middle tones of jasmine and rose. Lastly, the skin is left with classic overtones of mandarin and orange.
