Jordin Brianna Sparks TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Sony Music
The 22nd of December 1989, Jordin Brianna Sparks was born in Phoenix, Arizona. The 23rd of May 2007, she became the youngest contestant ever to win the talent show, American Idol. She was only 17 years old at the time. Shortly after, she released her first single from the debut album, Tattoo. Her big international breakthrough came when she recorded the single, No Air, with Chris Brown. In October, Jordin Sparks visited Sweden to appear, among other events, on the Swedish version of the Idol show, which had just kicked off with its Friday finals in search for Sweden’s new Idol. One of Makeup Store’s makeup artists assisted Jordin Sparks with makeup during the visit so we took the opportunity to ask her about her thoughts on beauty and makeup. Your singing career took a fantastic leap after you won Idol and released your single with Chris Brown. Do you have any advice to others who wish to make it in the music industry?
”Everyone you meet will tell you that you won’t make it. So it’s extremely important that you continue to focus on yourself and your goals. You have to convince yourself of the opposite, that you will succeed, to see the light at the end of the tunnel. So my advice will be short and simple: never give up.” How do you prepare yourself for a performance?
”My preparations start about three hours before the show. When I toured, I took care of my own hair and makeup. I love makeup and to experiment with cosmetics. When I’m not traveling, the makeup artist, Mylah Morales, helps me with makeup and styling. A super effective girl who also works for Rihanna. Right before I hit the stage, I’m filled with so much energy. So I tell myself to breathe and take it easy. And then I always say a prayer.” Describe your personal style.
”I can’t say that I have a specific style like rock, classic or sporty. I see myself as
a regular girl with jeans, a cute top and a pair of cute shoes. What I wear must be comfortable and cute,” Jordin says and laugs. ”My ’red carpet look’ is a variation of styles. I like to experiment and choose whatever I feel most comfortable in at that given moment. To learn about the designers and what is hot and trendy is something I am still teaching myself.”
If you only have 10 minutes to get ready, what do you do?
”I’ll use an eyepencil around the eyes and soften it outward. Afterwards, I apply a bit of eyeshow on top of the line I created with the eyepencil. On the lashes, I apply some mascara, Max Lashes. I complete the look with a bit of rouge and lipgloss of course.”
Has your style changed with your success?
Do you have any makeup advice that you could share with M Magazine’s readers?
”Yes, it has. Now, I’m more intent on looking good. In the beginning, I was a girl with jeans, big sweatshirts and a ponytail. Nowadays, I must be prepared to meet photographers every time I leave the household. In my
”False eyelashes! I absolutely love false eyelashes. I feel complete when I wear them even if I have only attached single lashes. Everyone should wear them.”
”False eyelashes! I absolutely love false eyelashes. I feel complete when I wear them even if I have only attached single lashes. Everyone should wear them.” purse, I have about 20 lipglosses. They help me whenever I feel I need a ’quick-fix’. Since I became famous, I’ve dared to experiment with makeup in a different way. Before, I used to find styles that I liked but never dared to sport. Now, I can stand on stage and go wild in a completely different way.” Do you have any sources of inspiration when it comes to beauty?
”Wow, I have to think a bit,” Jordin says and ponders for a moment. ”I feel that ’less is more’ and I love makeup where the base is lustrous and looks natural. Jennifer Hudson and Halle Berry always have beautiful skin. I also find Scarlett Johanson very beautiful because she fits in so many different styles. Gwen Stefani is extremely beautiful with her porcelain skin and red lips. Makeup Store’s product, Sparkling Powder Magic Bronze, gives me that luster.” M | 3
What is beauty to you?
”To teach yourself to love yourself. When you love youself, everyone else can see that you do. You smile and radiate.” Do you have a motto?
”Giving up is never an option. Don’t forget to take a step back and be present in what you get to experience.” And finally, what do you think you will be doing in ten years?
Jordin starts to laugh and says: ”Wow, I’ll be thirty then.” ”I will probably still be working with music but perhaps more behind the stage. I hope to have a big family and to work as an actress.”

The look is a tribute to the super glamorous and feminine era that started in the fifties, when the women reinforced with small effective details that together created a unit. The brows are carefully formed into a perfect shape. The eyes have a chocolate brown globe line and black lashes enhanced with eyeliner. War and misery have finally ended. The shortage in everything from sugar to pantyhose during the Second World War forced women to give up on makeup and beauty. In the name of fashion and because of the ongoing war, women desperately painted their legs brown to give the impression of nylon hose. With this dire background in mind, it is not surprising that the 1950’s paved the way for the glamorous makeup looks from hollywood – after years of starved fashion and beauty. the 1950’s not only saw the birth of today’s pop icons Madonna and the late Michael Jackson. the concept of celebrities and artists as sex symbols also materialized during this period. today’s idea of teenagers also dates back to this decade. all of this correlates with today’s developments within fashion and beauty. Beauty and makeup styles from the 50’s have inspired the catwalk and beauty in the last few years.
Men’s fashion and hairstyles have strong links to idols like elvis Presley and James dean, with some influences of preppy and nerd à la “high school”. Women’s fashion has its roots in hollywood – the ”glamazons”; Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren. all of the aforementioned 50’s icons were extremely alluring and secretive in their own way, but with completely different styles. Marilyn Monroe´s style can simply be described as scandal beauty. Marilyn was a real bombshell with her curvy body, the sinfully painted red lips, the fluttering false eyelashes rimming the eyelids and her way of lightly gasping during speech. Famous artists such as Madonna and gwen Stefani have incorporated a large part of this look in their own styles. Audrey Hepburn had, once upon a time, a very tom-boyish look when she preferred to sport long trousers, short hairstyles and discreet makeup. M | 6
emphasis lay on the eyebrows which will be super hot this spring. With the brows in focus, her dark eyes were framed in different shades of brown and beige. audry’s makeup coined the phrase roe deer eyes and a part of her style can be seen in the Swedish tV personality, Carina Berg. Brigitte Bardot was a so-called out of bed beauty, because it looked like she had just gotten out of bed, lightly brushed her fingers through her hair and applied eyeliner and mascara on the go. the unstyled beauty. today’s out of bed beauties are perhaps more refined by Swedish model and TV-personality Carolina gynning that is a good example. Sophia Loren’s smokey feline eyes has been a recurring feature season after season in the latter half of the 20th century. She was breathtakingly seductive with her smoking hot look. She revived the smokey look from the 1920’s and gave it a hotter touch. the famous Swedish blogger, elin kling, as well as the tV personality, katrin Zytomierska, have both fallen head over heels for this style.

Mika Liias TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Nakarin Phopan
“As I was born in the 60’s, I grew up being influenced by the cultural trends evolving in London. “Swinging London” had a tremendous influence throughout the world. The spirit of the new dynamism within music, art and fashion were evident even at home in Stockholm. To me, the 60’s appeared as a decade of change sweeping throughout the fashion world. Ideas and visions were fashioned which still, today, appears modern. Contemporary fashion and makeup bares evidence of the 60’s symmetrically shaped, slim fitted and brightly colored garments and fun outrageous makeup.” High fashion moved to the streets and became accessible for the general public. Carnaby Street was the shopping center of the modish generation. For the first time preferences by young people became important. Carnaby Street is yet still in tune with the latest trends and transmits a fun, witty and creative atmosphere. This is a mood Make Up Store would like to capture, make up for everyone, young or young at heart, we have something for you. Make Up Store was founded in 1996 by the entrepreneur Mika Liias. Six years previously Mika had already established a center to train makeup artists known as International Make Up Center. The necessity to provide the students with high-quality products for a decent price, due to the lack of suppliers, became the starting point for the company. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the school and the brand of Make Up Store is an evident success, it now reaching far out across the globe. I met up with the company’s founder and CEO, Mika Liias, to find out about the concept and visions of Make Up Store. How did you think about establishing the brand of Make Up Store?
It all began in a small business premises situated in a basement. The first day we had a daily statement of 68 SEK and the initial business capital didn’t even cover more than 3 monthly payments of rent. Money to promote and market our boutique was nowhere to be found. However, I believe there are no boundaries to achieve what
you set your mind to. The idea to arrange specialized courses, to educate any women with an interest to learn more about makeup, sprung to life. We decided to put a course ad in the local paper and that same day the phone wouldn’t stop ringing. During our first course period we had over 500 participants visiting Make Up Store. That’s how it all begun. What has been the hardest challenge to face?
I believe it has been the doubt amongst others that it was impossible to start a cosmetic brand and succeed. It was hard to continue working on something few people believed in. After a lot of hard work it all turned and our determination became a driving force. It is really incredible to see an idea taking shape and then being appreciated by others,
“Make Up Store is driven by the catchwords; tips, inspiration and knowledge. We are an educational cosmetic brand and we focus on our customers´ needs.” says Mika. Make Up Store is operated on a franchise basis and without these colleagues, who share the same passion for makeup as I, the company would never have become what it is today. Makeup courses and reasonably priced quality cosmetics, is it the success recipe of Make Up Store?
Yes, it’s probably the combination of both. Make Up Store is driven by the catchwords; tips, inspiration and knowledge. We are an educational cosmetic brand and we focus on our customers’ needs. Our philosophy is that knowledge is the key of a satisfying M | 15
purchase of products that our customers like to use. Another factor to our success is due to all of our competent franchising partners that enjoy to work with our concept. You are continuously expanding onto new markets, including London, tell me more.
Yes, we have recently expanded into Ireland, Poland, Costa Rica, Holland and now London. Opening in London has always been a dream of mine, a dream that many brands share. I am personally very proud of taking this step onto the British market and it gives me much pride and confidence for the future. London is one of the world’s major shopping destinations. The innovative fashion and design scene of London is recognized around the globe. Has the concept changed since expanding onto new markets?
No. It is important that the concept remains the same. It is vital that each and every boutique, whether it is located in Singapore or in a Swedish town, are identical. Our customers will be familiar with the concept wherever they prefer to visit. You will find the same highquality products and service in any of our boutiques. What we have done though is to expand our range of courses. We offer various makeup courses as well as courses in skincare. Recently we also began to cooperate with a Nordic organization, called Noaks Ark, to raise money for charity. This project is only aimed at the Swedish market and if it is well received we would love to do something more globally in a near future. What sort of collaboration is it?
Noaks Ark is working to educate about HIV and AIDS and to raise the awareness of the disease. Make Up Store, alongside other Swedish designers, are collaborating to raise money to support HIV and AIDS research. We have designed a light and functional eye shadow. All the money from the sale is donated to support the research. We hope to contribute to spread the awareness in this way. Where do you see yourself in the future?
I will remain within the company and continue its development and expand our horizon even further by setting up new boutiques.

This is how you apply eyeliner. Pull the eyelid stretched. Create a thin layer as close as possible to the lash line. Start in the inner corner of the eye and continue to the outer corner. Paint an additional line from the middle of the eye and outward for additional thickness. Preferably finish the look by extending Microshadow Pollution from the eyeline and outward, softening it with Angled Brush. For a perfect flick, create a dot next to the eyelid where you want the flick to end. Compare both eyes to guarantee that the dots match in terms of height and distance. Finally, create the flick from the dot to the eye.

Shading is a technique that is used in makeup to sculpt the face. it involves reinforcing positive shades of the face, i.e. the shadow underneath the cheekbone and jawline. the technique is also used to play down and shade away regions that you want to correct. how the technique is implemented is highly personal and based on your the shape of your face. also, you can shorten the nose if you think it looks too long by applying shading below the tip of the nose. if you want a pouty lower lip, shade underneath the lower lip. if you want a thinner nose, add some shading to the sides of the nose bridge, etc.

– how to apply/lips –
This is how you prepare your lips for a lasting lip makeup.
1. Properly prime your lips to
ensure that your lip makeup will last longer. apply your foundation or concealer over the lips and lip contours. use a synthetic brush to meticulously reach smaller areas.
2.
Afterwards, fixate your base with powder before you add color from your lip pencil and lipstick.
This technique allows you to create colored lips with a maximizing effect.
3.
Find the center of your mouth and paint an even V in terms of shape and length. then, rim your lips from the corners of your mouth towards the V. this technique minimizes the risk of an uneven lip contour.
4.
then apply the red lipstick, China red, from the edges of the lip pencil and inward toward the opening of the mouth. this is the same technique that was used to soften the lip pencil contours.
6. if you only paint the mouth in
5. Switch to the lighter lipstick,
a dark and matte shade, the lips look smaller. Mix a lighter color or a lipgloss where the light hits the lips for an enlargening effect. the technique is also applicable with other color combinations.

Crille’s three favourites: anti Fire aroma Balm Prime & Protect
M | 46
– profile photographer USA –
Crille Forsberg TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Private Pictures
Crille Forsberg is a down-to-earth and sporty man who originally comes from a small town in Sweden. Nowadays, he resides in the metropolitan cities, Stockholm and Los Angeles, to work more closely as a renowned photographer with the celebrity elite. Crille partly works with still photography within advertisement and fashion, but he also works with moving pictures, such as music videos and commercials. Some of his clients include Robbie Williams, Basement Jaxx, Primal Scream, NIKE och Adidas. Alongside this photographer, you can find the top Swedish directors, Amir Chamdin, Jonas Åkerlund and Johan Renck. The last two have worked a great deal with the artist Madonna. Crille’s favorite color is chocking green. He prefers drinking lukewarm water and loves travelling to Halland (Halland is placed in Sweden’s most popular west coast. It is also the only area in the country where you can swim in saltwater). If he were not a photographer, Crille would work as a carpenter. How did you start working as a photographer?
After completing my military service, I travelled to Charmonix and lived there from 1988 to 1994. I ended up working in different skiing films that was used in different commercials for Quiksilver, Oxbow, K2, Look och Gillette. Already after one winter, my friends and I realised that we could produce our own skiing films to support ourselves a bit. So we got a hold of cameras and started filming each other and other friends. Our old skiing sponsors provided financial support, skiis and snowboards. We produced 3-4 skiing films and a couple of snowboard films. All of a sudden, Ola Håkansson from Stockholm Records called and wondered if I wanted to make a music video and, poof, I was in full gear producing music videos. The directing was a bit lackluster but it was sufficiently well filmed for people to see that something was happening. In the fall of 1995, Infinite Mass’s Amir Chamdin called and wanted to film a music video for ”Area Turns
Red”. For me, this was a breaking point in my career. Sharp lighting and nice camera movements. That fall, I never slept but filmed a whole lot of videos with a variety of artists. In the summer, Sonet Film contacted me and wanted to know if I wanted to film ”9mm”. Although I was no “Ingmar Bergman”, the lighting was awesome and the camera flow was good, if I could quote others. Probably not a pioneering movie but it was new for everyone who worked with it. After all, we were a bunch of youngsters who worked on 9mm. I survived thanks to photography.
What is important with regards to makeup during a photo shoot?
Makeup is the last tool you have to create a unique expression on the model or actor. Makeup create overall impression with the person and the message. It can’t look smudged or have the feeling of being a layer on top of the face. It must feel like it is deep within. Strong eyecontours look very nice. Is it a team who plans the makeup and hair?
Mostly, directors have the last word but we often discuss how it should cofunction with
“Makeup is the last tool you have to create a unique expression on the model or actor. Makeup create overall impression with the person and the message. It can’t look smudged or have the feeling of being a layer on top of the face. It must feel like it is deep within.” After that, commercial films exploded around 1996 and the industry was screaming for filmmakers. I was lucky enough to be ready at this point and to provide a fresh name. It was just to dive in full-heartly.
the lighting. We often tend to start with a bit of makeup, depending on the product we are filming for. But for a music video, we might add some more makeup for more attitude.
What are your photography?
Energy.

Naturally, movies and museums. Animated movies can also be inspiring in terms of lighting, which I consider to be the most important element in any job – after a good model and makeup, of course. How do you create an overall impression in your work?
I try to imagine how the picture will convey a clear message. With the model, lighting and scenography, I can figure out where to place the camera so that it captures the right sort of energy.

What is beauty to you?
Do you have any personal beauty tips that you could share?
Sun factor on your hands and face and a good lotion. I use Prime & Protect. Instead of After Balm I use Anti Fire and Aroma Balm to prevent dry skin. What are your plans for the future?
Spend as much time as possible with my family and also to work with more and more interesting pictures and films. What will you be doing in thirty years?
Surf Longboard with my daughters somewhere.
– how to apply/grooming –
A basic skincare regime is important for men and women. The skin is exposed to external stress factors and must be cleansed and rebalanced to its natural pH value. The most effective way to find your skin type is to visit a Makeup Store boutique for a consultation and information on products that are specifically designed for your skin type and needs.
1. tweezing
your eyebrows is easy and does not have to be painful. use one hand to hold the tweezer and the other hand to pull the skin taut. to maintain a masculine eyebrow shape, pluck from underneath and only remove every other hair, one hair at a time. Brows that grow too far down in the outer end of the eye can make you look sad. remove the hairs that are the furthest down. also remove hairs between the brows.
2. hairs that stick out from the
nostrils create an ungroomed impression. Cut these hairs with a Scissor for Nostrilhair. the scissors have rounded knives to minimize the risk for injury.
3.
For a more gentle shaving, shave in the shower when the hairs are softened by the heat and steam. always wash the skin before shaving. Sensitive Foam remover helps soften the facial hair and removes dirt and other impurities. always start shaving in the same direction as the hair growth. rinse your shaver after every stroke to remove old hairs for a proper and close shave. Finish the shave by washing your face with cold water. this step will allow your pores to constrict, remove foam and other remnants from the shaving.
4.
to keep your skin vitalized and fresh as well as increase cell rejuvenation, use a peeling that removes dead skin cells and counteracts unclean pores. gently massage either Cleansing Powder or Facial Cream Scrub Jojoba with lukewarm water in circular motions on your entire face or the neck. exfoliating too hard can lead to redness and skin irritation. afterwards, wash the skin thoroughly with a Cleansing towel.
5.
For an optimal effect from your peeling, finish the routine with a deep-cleansing mask. Choose a remoisturizing mask if your skin feels dry. Mud Mask is a deep-cleansing mud mask with deep-cleansing effects without dehydrating qualities. if you have a dry skin type, opt for Moisture Mask which remoisturizes and brings luster to the skin. use your peeling and a suitable mask once or twice per week.
6.
apply the remoisturizing lotion, anti Fire. the product is also antiseptic and conteracts inflammation in hair follicles. M | 48
– how to apply/grooming–
7. this
product can also be used in the sensitive areas of the groin and other more intimate areas. anti Fire also has a cooling effect that calms the skin after shaving.
8.
after this procedure, apply the eye cream from the bridge of the nose and outward. gently dab the product into the skin with your fingers. A product that counteracts swelling and dark rings is eye Cool Stick.
9.
the skin needs moisture from morning to night. the skin on the neck also needs to be remoisturized. apply from the nose and out toward the hairline. Massage in upward movements on the forehead, from the brows up to the hairline. the movements stimulate the muscles of the face and facilitates the quick absorption of the product into the skin. day time is used during the day while Night time is used at night. People with extremely dry skin can use the Creme as a day and night cream.
10. Before you start your day
or night, apply a thin layer of the concealer, Reflex Cover, most effectively with the synthetic brush #211. the brush makes the concealer extremely thin and natural-looking. Start from the corners of the eyes and outward.
11. a
bit of powder can remove oilyness in the skin. Sweep the brush over the face, from the nose and outward toward the jawline, chin and hairline. the powder should have the same shade as your neck. the product should not be visible, only mattify shiny skin. instead of being visible, powder should provide a matte, fresh feeling. to avoid excess powder, evenly spray the face twice with the nurturing face tonic, Face Mist. it removes any excess powder. – how to apply/lashes –
1. a cosmetic technique that works in all makeup looks is known as lash
accentuation. lift the eyelid as seen in the picture so that you can clearly see the lash line. Then, fill the gaps between the eyelashes. Filling these gaps creates an illusion of a dense and luscious lash line without looking unnatural. you can use an Angled brush and a black eyeshadow or a black kohl pencil. The benefit with this technique is that you can create an overlying eyeliner or attach a couple of false eyelashes without it looking like it is ‘hovering’ above the lash line. instead, the eyeliner and/or synthetic lashes blend with your own eyelashes.
2. always detach your synthetic
lashes with a tweezer from the kit. if you pull the synthetic lashes with your fingers, you might break the lashes in two – making it nearly impossible for you to completely remove them. afterwards, measure your eyelids so that you can select the right length of lashes. if the false eyelashes are too long, cut them to the desired length. use eyelash Scissor which is thin and fine. Regular scissors can damage the lash because they are too coarse.
4.
always attach the lash line from the outer corner of the eye, as close as possible to your natural lashes without directly attaching it to your natural lashes. you must look straight ahead during application to find the right angle of the false lashes.
3.
Bend the lashes lightly to shape them. then, apply the adhesive to the backside of the false lash line. let the adhesive set for approximately 30 seconds before you attach it to facilitate the adhesion. otherwise, the false lash line might slip on the eyelid during application.
5. Bend the end of the lash line downward and press to properly fixate it. Press the entire lash line by pushing your fingers towards the lash tips for approximately 30 seconds. M | 60
– how to apply/lashes –
6. then, curl the entire lash line
with an eyelash curler. initially curling your natural lashes would make it more difficult to attach the false lashes at the right angle on your eyelid. afterwards, apply mascara. only add mascara to the roots of your own lashes in short zig zag motions. this technique allows your natural lashes to color the false lashes. do not add mascara to the lengths of the lashes.
7.
always create an eyeline when you have false lashes to camouflage the knots of the false lashes and to create an even and luscious lash line.
9.
8.
the end result. the naturallooking synthetic lash, Baby, was chosen for this picture.
10. you can do a lot of things
with false eyelashes in your makeup. here, we have applied the dynamic lashes, Sindy. M | 61
Most people only add false eyelashes on the upper eyelid. adding false lashes on the lower eyelid can create a dramatic look. At Makeup Store, you can find false lashes that are specifically designed for this purpose. you can also use regular false lashes. in the picture, the synthetic lashes, Baby, were applied above and below the eye.
11. Below the eyes, you can attach the synthetic lashes, lady.

eyedust Bamboo
The metallic effect in eyeshadows comes from Mother-of-Pearl, which are crystals from calcium carbonate. The Mother-of-Pearls surface has fluorescent properties because of the thickness of the material. It has the lowest thickness that the wavelength of visible light can capture. Thereby when different wavelengths of light hits the surface of Mother-of-Pearl it changes into the color scale of the rainbow. This summer the trends in eyeshadows are metallic. You will find the latest products in the makeup collection Splash. Regarding the ordinary assortment you can choose among the Eyedusts and Cybershadows for a metallic glow since they are filled with luster and Mother-of-Pearl. For a truly intense result use shimmery High Tech Lighter as primer.

iMC teXt By: linda Nicklasson PhotograPhy By: international Makeup Center
In a bright and fresh facility in Kungsholmen, Stockholm, you will find International Makeup Center (IMC) - Sweden’s only privately-run international school. The walls are decorated with large, inspirational photos of incredible makeup styles. Plenty of colorful wigs in all kinds of hairstyles placed on doll heads along two entire walls. In essence, an environment that allows for maximum creativity from its students. Sweden’s first Makeup Artist programme is run here. the school has existed in Stockholm for 19 years. Mika liias opened the school in the fall of 1990 after tips abroad, where he met a friends who trained makeup artists. Mika was mesmerized and returned to Sweden with the ambition to start a school by the name of international Makeup Center (iMC). Shortly after, the school opened in gothenburg and later in Malmö. iMC now has three schools in Finland, one in estonia and another one in lithuania. international Makeup Center is its name: international because it offers an international education. Makeup because the school work with makeup. and Center because the school always want our alumni to feel welcome when they return to the school and seek consultation or give advice to other students.
the high quality of the curriculum has remained the same since the start. the teachers freelance as makeup artists in addition to their day jobs as teachers. this means that they always stay up-to-date with the latest in the industry. the school is famous for its high standards. that is why our students are highly sough-after in the business. they are constantly on practical training assignments, where they try everything from photo shoots and fashion shows to television jobs. a very important part of the education in which students establish valuable contacts for the future. iMC offers two courses. 10 weeks of beauty makeup, and 20 weeks of both beauty and character makeup. during our 10-week course, the student will attend class from Monday to Friday, day or evening, depending on the location of the school. every lesson lasts for four hours and starts with theory. it is followed by practical application of that day’s topic. afterwards, an assessment and correction of the makeup is carried out by the teacher so that the student can learn and progress to an accomplished makeup artist.
this is how the success story started. and now – 19 years later – more than 5000 people from all over europe have received training at the schools of iMC.
during these weeks, the student will learn how to use suitable products as well as examine a face to enhance its personal and favorable features. Creating a beautiful makeup is an artform!
in august of 2009, iMC opened new facilities in Stockholm. at the same time, a school opened its doors in lithuania with the same spirit. our vision is for all schools to have the same appearance in the near future, especially since the 20th anniversary is approaching in the fall of 2010.
the 20-week course basically consists of a 10-week addition in character Makeup to our 10-week beauty course. Beauty makeup is one important part of the makeup industry. But for the more artistic individual who likes to create freely from scratch, the character course is the natural continuation. M | 71
during this course, there is more focus on theatre. you learn how to create fake wounds, a broken nose, frost bite, clown faces, beards, an aged look, bald caps and much much more… if you already completed the 10-week beauty course, you still have the opportunity to continue with these additional 10 weeks later on. Many people believe that a makeup artist works in theatre and television. that is true for a lot of makeup artists, but the profession offers much more such as photo shoots, commercials and fashion shows etc. Makeup artistry has many years on its back and the demand is always escalating. New products and techniques are developed all the time. the makeup artist now has a wider and larger market to navigate within. today, a professional makeup artist can work with the whole world as his or her workplace. Work can be found in theatre, films, photo shoots, runway shows, music videos, etc. It is the variation that most people find alluring. New people, new places. every day is unique. as a makeup artist, you must be flexible and enjoy meeting new people. As a certified makeup artist, the opportunities to work are many. thanks to the new new media and forums, the industry is on a strong rise and the future looks very promising!

– about brushes –
about Brushes As an educational cosmetic brand, we actively share our knowledge of makeup with our customers. We answer questions on how to apply or products and to get the best results. In our assortment you will find a variety of brushes. These tools are crucial essentials within makeup. That is why we hereby present our newcomers and how they should be used. Some aspects to consider regarding brushes: - do not blow excess makeup from the brush. instead, shake or tap the brush against the back of your hand to remove excess powder and to avoid bacteria growth. - Brushes that are applied near the inside of the eyes should preferably be washed after every use. - Wash the brush in lukewarm water and eye Foam remover. if the brush is composed of authentic hair, conditioner can soften the bristles. remover effectively dissolves fat from synthetic brushes that have been used for application of fatty products, such as lipstick or concealer. - Massage the eye Foam remover into the brush with your fingertips. Never rub but work in the direction of the bristles. rinse with running water. - Never soak the entire brush. the handle is often composed of wood and the adhesive that holds the bristles and the shaft together can dissolve. afterwards, let the brush dry horizontally on a towel. also remember to sculpt the brush into the desired shape before it dries. - For a quick wash, use Brush Cleaner that also disinfects the brush. Brush Cleaner quickly and effectively cleanses your brush, before
and after application. Without damaging or wearing out your tools. it is also suitable before and after you use your tweezer. it disinfects the tool which eliminates the risk of bacterial spread in the eyeregion. an easy way to increase your hygiene. Why different types of brushes and why some are made of authentic hair?
Brushes are available in a variety of sizes so that you can decide on the concentration and amount of color pigment you wish to apply. Small brushes are used on smaller regions and applies more pigments. larger brushes are suitable for larger areas and adds smaller amounts of color pigment. Smaller brushes also tend to be harder so that they can create straight lines, such as eyeliner. Brushes that are composed of authentic hair can more easily pick up very tiny color pigments. if you magnify authentic hair, you will find microscopic pockets that actually pick up these pigments. Soft Touch Brush #114 this brush is composed of pony hair. it is perfectly suitable for the application and blending of several eyeshadows. the soft hair picks up all the pigments in the eyeshadow to create an intense result. the brush can also be used for highlighting. Blending Brush Mini #112 this mini-brush with pony hair is perfect for shaping and highlighting your eye makeup. you can easily tone down hard edges or use the brush to create a soft crease line. White Blending Brush #117 this brush is composed of goat hair. apply your dry products, such as Microshadow, Cybershadow and eyedust, with the brush on the upper eyelid. Perfect for softening and blending your eyeshadows. M | 73
Eyeshadow Brush Small #105 an eyeshadow brush composed of pineten hair. Perfect for smaller regions where you want an intense result from your Microshadow, Cybershadow or eyedust. the brush can also be used to soften your eyeshadows. Why different types of rouge brushes?
Brushes have different shapes for the different areas of use. Rouge Brush #340 is a regular rouge brush made of goat hair. a medium-soft brush that is perfect for rouge on the apple of your cheeks and along the cheekbones. the brush is also suitable for carefully softening your eye makeup. Rouge Brush #342 is a soft brush composed of goat hair. the shape of the brush is perfect for soft, natural rouges on the apple of your cheeks. Rouge Brush Angle #367 is a twisted rouge brush composed of goat hair for a soft and perfect result. the shape of the brush is also specifically adapted for shading of the cheekbones, jaw region and forehead. Why are there brushes made out of synthetic hair?
Synthetic brushes are especially suitable for fat and creamy makeup products. if you magnify a synthetic hair, you will see that its surface is completely smooth and lacks pockets. hence, it is very easy to remove all makeup residues when washing the brushes. this feature is extremely important because fatty products can go rancid. Syntethic Eyeshadow Brush Medium #205 With this brush, you can easily apply creamy products such as Cover all Mix, Studio Foundation or high tech lighter. the bristles of the brush gives a natural result and evenly distributes the product on the area of application.
– how to apply/lips–
This is how you prepare your lips for a lasting lip makeup.
1. Properly prime your lips to
ensure that your lip makeup will last longer. apply your foundation or concealer over the lips and lip contours. use a synthetic brush to meticulously reach smaller areas.
2.

This type of lip makeup can be implemented if you want a minimizing effect on your lips. It can also help create dynamic makeup styles in different colors.

Dagmar TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Valdemar Asp
Dagmar is a Swedish clothing label, founded and run by three sisters – Kristina Tjäder, Karin Söderlind and Sofia Malm. The first collection was launched in the spring of 2005. The muse and main source of inspiration is their paternal grandmother, Dagmar. She worked as a seamstress and triggered their huge interest in textiles and design at an early age. In August of 2005, Dagmar was granted the award, ”Rookie of the year”, by the Swedish Fashion Council. September of that year, the label was awarded the ”Garbo Hat”, a design prize in the name of Greta Garbo. In February 2006, Dagmar was named ”Newcomer of the Year” by the Swedish fashion magazine, Elle. Dagmar was also, in August of 2007, nominated by Gen Art as a prominent new design label, and participated in the ”Fresh Faces in Fashion” during the Fashion Week in New York in September. ”Fresh Faces in Fashion” was already in it´s 13th year and has become an important part of the up and coming design during New York Fashion Week. Dagmar is sold in stores around Europe but also across the US – from New York on the East coast, through Portland and Chicago, to Los Angeles in the West. Dagmar also started selling clothes in Japan with the launch of its spring and summer collection of 2007. With the finest quality and a tailored feeling, Dagmar’s collections fuse woven and knitted material. Dagmar stands for femininity, humor and quality. A Dagmar garment reinforces the person’s unique style and creates a modern sense of individualism. Many of the garments are hand-knitted or adorned with handmade details. Preserving the craftsmanship and tapping in to knowledge from the past are important aspects of the creative process when developing the collections. The inspiration for the sensations, colors and patterns of Dagmar esthetic can mostly be found in the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s. Kristina Tjäder is an educated designer and pattern constructor at ESMOD, École Superieur de la Mode, in Paris. She previously worked for Christian Lacroix, Hennes & Mauritz, Boomerang, Hollies and Mover. Tjäder has also freelanced as a designer for a
number of performers. Karin Söderlind worked for eight years with purchase and product development at Hennes & Mauritz as well as a trademark and PR-consultant in retail trade for five years. Sofia Malm is an educated textile economist in Borås with many years’ experience within the retail industry. I meet up with Karin to learn more about Dagmar. What was the thought process behind your spring collection?
Dagmar’s spring and summer collection 2010 is dedicated to the sophisticated, artistic and mysterious woman – a sensual bombasse. The outfits and dresses are typically ”arty chic”, with details evocative of undergarment pieces – bra straps, hooks and lace – that unavoidably catch the attention of the beholder. This provocative yet intellectual woman prefers dressing in skin-toned colors combined with intense black and dark blue.
goes. Several styles co-exist which creates more diversity and that’s wonderful. How do trends affect the cohesiveness in your collections?
We rarely work with trends. A pillar in our design philosophy is that we focus on sustainability, ”slow fashion”. We think about the long-term aspect of materials and designs. Are you a team that conjointly creates a makeup and hair concept for the fashion shows and photo shoots of the collections?
Please tell us about the men’s and women’s lines. How do the makeup trends look this spring? This spring, the makeup will be rather natural but with strong contrasts, such as a lipstick that stands out with its sharp coral shade. We always work as a team before every show, putting together a cohesive hair
“There aren’t as many ‘musts’now. Everything goes. Several styles co-exist which creates more diversity and that’s wonderful.” Belts shaped like leather corsets and wide leather straps around the wrists reveal some of the excentric preferences of this strong woman. What are your sources of inspiration?
Often the arts and popular culture – not from the actual world of fashion. What is your motto?
Sexy knits, haha. Our motto is to always deliver a discernible, sensual and secure style. We achieve this goal by adhering to high quality in everything that we do – from our choice of material to production options etc. Knitted and tailored is our thing. Could you describe your work process in terms of being a Swedish label?
and makeup profile. But Kristina, the head designer, always makes the final decision Differences and similarities in the combination of clothes, makeup and hair – then and now?
Less styling of hair nowadays. You are allowed to be more casual with your hair which is nice. With regards to cosmetics, natural makeup is more fashionable and that’s very beautiful What is beauty to you?
Natural beauty is the most attractive form of beauty. Beautiful people are those who carry themselves nicely. I really want to stress that all forms of cosmetic surgery only make people uglier, which is odd because they don’t seem to understand that. Describe your everyday and evening makeup.
Wow, that was difficult. I think we have an honest and high quality profile. If that profile is Swedish? I don’t know.
During the day, very natural with some black around the eyes and sometimes a red lipstick. For parties, I add more black haha.
Fashion then and now – do you see any similarities and differences?
What are your three favorite products from Make Up Store and why?
There aren’t as many ‘musts’ now. Everything
Beautiful lipsticks in many shades...

Paloma’s three favorites: Max lashes lipstick China red Cake eyeliner M | 86
– profile artist great britain –
Paloma Faith TEXT BY: Johanna Lundgren PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Sony Music
London born Paloma Faith, released her first album “Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful” in September 2009. Her music is influenced by soul and jazz, the debut single “Stone Cold Sober” reached number 17 on the UK Single Chart. Paloma is half Spanish, half British and thereof her name, which means ‘dove’ in Spanish. Paloma, an ex magician’s glamour assistant, trained in contemporary dance, graduated from St Martin’s with an MA in theatre direction, performed in burlesque shows, and does acting. She has been mixing artistic media throughout her grown up life. A few years ago she introduced music, now her primary love, into the equation. At first she was singing blues and soul songs from the singers she admired, this later lead to her finding her own unique voice. Tell us about your career, how it all started and how it progressed into what it is today?
Well, I have done many different things in my life before I found my passion for music, but I have always been artistic. I went to St Martin’s and graduated with an MA in theatre direction, I trained contemporary dance and did a few acting jobs. I began singing in cabaret and burlesque clubs. Then I joined a cover band doing forties and fifties music, and I enjoyed singing in the band so much I decided to start writing my own songs. That was 5 years ago and now I just finished my first album. What’s the biggest difference from being “the girl next door” to being famous?
Em, people don’t really take pictures of you on their mobile phones when you’re the girl next door”, she laughs. “I find it kind of weird since it’s all still very new to me. My manager believes that you just have to carry on living your life as normal as possible until you can’t anymore and that’s when you have to start making some changes. So I’m still in that stage where I’m taking the bus and the tube, but it’s starting to get a little bit bizarre, when people come up asking ‘why are you on the bus!?’ and things like that”. It is all a transition. Tell us about your interest for fashion and trends.
I have always liked dressing up, always had different characters and reinvented myself. I
think that my fashion style is not necessarily about what’s in fashion I just dress the way that I want to dress, I don’t really look at current trends. High- waisted skirts and trousers and all that is very important to me because I have that kind of curvy figure. I also think that forties and fifties style clothes suits me better because of my body shape. But I’ve always dressed up and been in costume even before I became a singer, and I’ve always had people approaching me in the street to take pictures of my clothes long before people knew who I was. What is beauty for you?
I think your inside reflects on your outside… I could think that if someone have a hard face that they are not a very nice person,” she says giggling. Beauty is a bit of a strange thing if we’re talking about superficial beauty because we women are absolutely mental we can look in the mirror one day and think: ‘Ah, I’m really thin and I have this really nice outfit on and I am so pretty and everything is great’, and then you wake up the next day you suddenly are like: ‘Oh NO! I’m obese and ugly with terrible skin!’ It’s all to do with your frame of mind and not what you’re actually looking at! It’s really weird, but most of us do it and it’s very bad, they call it body dysmorphia. So I believe it is very important to always feel good from the inside and be happy with yourself. Have your interest in beauty changed since you became famous?
I’ve always been aware of my makeup and how I dress and I always wanted to look nice… So it’s nothing new to me. I used to work for Agent Provocateur and when you work there you have to always smell nice and do your hair and makeup to perfection, to be really well presented at all times and that was just to work in a shop. All that said I quite like imperfection anyway, like for example a lot of my vintage clothes have holes in them and stuff, I think it’s quite sweet when you’re glamorous but slightly imperfect. It’s endearing and more personal. What would you wear, makeup wise on a normal weekday?
On a normal day, I use pressed powder and a precision eyeliner, mascara, eyebrow pencil, lipstick and a blusher. M | 87
And when you’re getting ready for a show?
All that above, face paint, glitter and fake lashes. Would you maybe be willing to share a few of your personal beauty and makeup tips and tricks?
My main beauty tip is to feel good from the inside. Then I have one when applying the eyeliner, but it would be easier to demonstrate then to explain. Anyway, instead of making one line follow your eyelashes you kind of flick it and make two lines from each side of the eye, one from the inner corner and in towards the middle, and one from the utter corner and in towards the middle of the eye and then you just fill it in. The eyebrows are very important to me and it kind of makes your whole face, I like old Hollywood glamour eyebrows when they are big and bushy.
“My main beauty tip is to feel good from the inside.” To take care of your skin is also important I have very sensitive skin and use day and night crèmes specifically for sensitive skin, this when I don’t sleep with my makeup! Which I really would not recommend!” What are your favourite products?
Eyebrow pencil, cake eyeliner, Max Lashes and red lipstick, China Red. Do you have a particular role-model when it comes to looks? Please tell us who and why this person?
Josephine Baker, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Jones, all classic bold characteristics. What’s your future plans?
I have many friends in Sweden and would love to come over on tour but it all depends on how my album does over there… At the moment I have a mini tour in Germany and France coming up apparently I am very popular there already, and thereafter Australia to promote my album. In the future I can’t wait to do my second album.
Fragrance
Library This is exactly what it sounds like, a library of scents. Today the typical perfume costumer today is not loyal to one scent for a very long period of time and likes the option of change. They rather buy many less expensive variants then fewer a little pricier. Therefore Make Up Store has developed a concept together with fabulous, specially designed bottles to a reasonable price. The bottles contain 50ml, the fragrances reaches over a wide choice with broad variation that will be expanded over time. In this project we have chosen to work with one of the biggest and most qualified perfume-house there is on the market. So we can establish a collection as complete as possible. All the fragrances are also possible to mix and match for you to create your own unique smell. The perfumes are called: All Through Genuine Champion Deluxe Your Valentine Less is More The Trophy Fashionable Lifestyle Holiday Luxury Twenty Forever

When it comes to design we have kept Make Up Stores neat black design in mind and combined it with our motto “a world of Colors. Each fragrance is unique and has received its own color scheme that is used both on the bottle and the box. The text describing each scent have been written as a personal ad. The personal ads characterize each one in a different and fun way that also makes it easier for the costumer to choose which one that suits him or her best. We have chosen to introduce three fragrances during the late autumn and will be releasing several more in the spring. This collection will also include body lotions and body mists to increase the options for the costumer.

To each fragrance you can find a matching luxurious scented candle that lasts up to 90 hours. This makes them among the longest lasting on the market. These scented candles have an added ingredient that enhance and intensify the smell. The candle burns evenly and do not leave any traces along the edges. The top layer of the wax melts when heated and becomes hard thereafter. It is important to let the whole top layer melt the first time you light it so it can burn evenly all the way down. The essences in the candles are the same as in the perfumes and do therefore keep the same high standards.

In Vilnius, capital city of Lithuania, by the one of the busiest old town streets, opened it’s doors the tenth “International Makeup Center.” The head of the school Jolanta Paulauskiene, who is the numerous International and Lithuanian beauty contest prime place winner, rejoices that the groups are full and the fresh “International Makeup Center” artists are already in the middle of their preparation courses.
in overcoming my fears and getting to know the beauty world.
Why have you chosen your job position in the “International Makeup Center”?
What is beauty for you?
I sensed that the company goals and the very approach to the work ethics resembles my own. I do admire IMC young and creative teams of makeup artists and of course the distinctive quality of “Makeup Store” products. Describe yourself…
I think of myself to be creative and open to changes. I love meeting new people, my friends say that I am a persom with good communication skills and I certainly am not afraid to take responsibility. How did you get into the world of makeup?
I have been into beauty and fashion since my childhood. In my teenage years, I used to analyze and read foreign Fashion magazines, which friends of my family brought to me. I still remember the scent of the journals, when my fingers slowly glided through the glossy pages; and the colors almost hypnotized me (laughs). The first meeting with a makeup artist was vital – then I saw what sort of magic the brush could do, and I determined to master this refine art.
I am not disappointed in my choice to become a makeup artist! Each day I discover something new, something fresh in this art field. Creating a makeup is charming in all the ways – my working style and techniques are always developing. I experiment a lot while creating makeup. Being a makeup artist is a creative and passionate journey. Beauty is surely not symmetry in a persons face (smiles). Of course, distinctive features are nature’s gift but not every woman has it. I find it self-contradictory, because from the first glance my job isto enhance the person’s outer beauty, although I am convinced that beauty is an veiled quality. The basis for beauty starts in a person’s self-confidence, followed by unique charm, and concludes in the ray of energy. If that is true, then what is the purpose of the makeup artist?
Spotlight the most attractive facial features and display individuality.
If we speak about the teamwork, it is highly important to be flexible and to know how to readjust and react in different situations. What famous names of makeup artists inspire you?
Kevyn Aucoin, Pat McGrath, Val Garland, Terry Barber and many more.
“Naturally, everything in this world is shortlived. Beauty is fragile – this makes it even more thrilling and valuable.” Do you consult your friends about the makeup?
I do not like to critisize, if that is what you are asking. The very essence of beauty is asubjective notion to every person – everyone perceives it differently. I noticed that people around become very sensitive in the presence of a professional makeup artist, which is why I try to encourage even the smallest attempts to look attractive.
What is your working style?
How do you feel when removing a makeup you have created?
I believe that the makeup must be elementary and natural. People must notice the face and not the makeup itself.
Naturally, everything in this world is shortlived. Beauty is fragile – this makes it even more thrilling and valuable.
You do not wear any makeup; explain why?
What is your (as a makeup artist) motto?
There is an old Lithuanian saying: “As a shoe craftsman without shoes” thus makeup artists are often seen without any makeup (smiling).
Beauty is in simplicity.
Where did you study makeup?
What personal qualities are attributed to the makeup artist?
I studied privately with the professionals in the field of makeup art. Then I began working at a beauty boutique and as a consultant in a big cosmetic/beauty store – I would deliver cosmetic products and create makeup for our customers. This was essential
Drawing skills and communication are essential in working with many different people. I believe a makeup artist should have sensitive ears and open mind in order to hear what client wants especially when a client is unclear in explaining the desires. M | 97
What are your favourite products?
Wonder Powder because you can create different effects of glow. Tri Brow because it has truly natural colors. Gel Eyeliner because it works perfect as a primer as well What are some of your hobbies?
Yoga, waking in the forest, philosophical literature. In this hyperactive world my hobbies help me to calmly accomplish my goals and furnish impulses of inspiration.

Hannah Holgersson TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Karl-Oskar Bjurenstedt
The talented Hannah Holgersson has established herself as one of Sweden’s most versatile singers, with a repertoire that extends from Baroque music by way of opera to the most recent avant-garde music. Tell us about your career, how it all started and how it progressed into what it is today?
I grew up in a family with five children all playing different instruments, for us music was the biggest passion. During my career as playing the cello I got opportunities to do many exciting shows, concerts and tours. Although I never felt that I wanted to make it my profession. After a few years at the university studying languages I decided to attend singing lessons, just for fun, and straight away I felt that it was right. Through the singing I could now express the music I felt inside me. I got approved to attend The Royal School of Music in Stockholm on my first attempt of applying. I graduated with a degree in 2004 and have since then worked as a singer and artist in wide contexts. On top of being a classic singer along side symphony orchestras both in Sweden and abroad and having the leading role in operas and musicals I have also competed in the Eurovision Song Contest with the group “Elysion” in 2006. I have also been a part of “Carolas Christmas tours” (a Swedish famous singer) and Joe Laberos latest show, (a Swedish famous magican) Invited, to name a few different happenings. I absolutely love what I do, I get to meet and perform with many wonderful and incredibly talented artists and musicians. What’s your future plan?
To continue being a voice and a face of total freedom, without any boundaries in producing music where creativity and inner expressions obtains unlimited space. The world of the movies has a big part of this to offer, so therefore a music and film collaboration would be a new challenge for me in the future! What will you be doing in 30 years?
I hope I will continue doing something meaningful to my fellow people, something that gives them a pleasant break in their
everyday life and preferably adds a splash of glamour to it!
What would you wear, makeup wise on a normal weekday?
Tell us about your interest for fashion and trends.
Except daily cleansing and moisturizing day creme I first of all use concealer, mascara, blusher and lipgloss. But also happily an eyeshadow in a matching color to either my accessories or clothes.
Although I’m personally interested in colours, shape and esthetic of clothes and makeup has become essential to my life as an artist, to be aware of my appearance. I have learnt a lot from being around many skilled makeup artists and stylists. But have also had the privilege to often work together with clothesdesigners and hairstylists and they always try hard to create my artist look.
“Otherwise a concealer together with a highlighter gives a more awakened look and along with a mascara it opens up the eyes.” What is beauty for you?
Inner confidence and harmony within oneself along with love and compassion for other people makes a person incredibly beautiful! Have your interest in beauty changed since you became famous?
As an artist it’s important to have a product strategy that has been carefully thought through. In today’s mediasociety it isn’t enough “just” being able to sing and act. You have to make sure your product have the right packing and look when it goes through the media rush and the audience. You really have to consider, who am I trying to reach? What am I trying to say with my appearence? What kind of signals do I want to send out? So back to the question, I do have to be aware of current trends for my appearence, what the audience want and to profile myself as specific as possible through clothes and makeup to represent my music and to reach out to my audience in the best possible way. It’s important to find your own unique style. M | 107
And when you’re getting ready for a show?
The stage makeup is often influenced by the venue itself and the size of the event. If it is a gala event a lot of glamour, such as long fake lashes and a lot of glitter in eyeshadows and eyeliners. A more settled makeup would be used if it were a smaller venue where I am close to the audience. But generally I like to enhance my eyes with different types or fake lashes and I also enjoy working with all kinds of shimmery eyeshadows! Would you maybe be willing to share a few of your personal beauty and makeup tips and tricks?
Well, generally agreed is that sleep, water, healthy eating combined with exercise gives you a natural healthy glow. It is uncomparable to anything else. Otherwise a concealer together with a highlighter gives a more awakened look and along with a mascara it opens up the eyes. I also personally think a rosy blusher on the cheekbones gives a freshfaced impression. What are your favourite products?
I use skincare products Intensive Foam Remover and Refining Toner. For my foundation and loose powder I use Wonder Powder and Matt Foundation Toast. Do you have a particular role-model when it comes to looks? Please tell us who and why this person?
Kate Winslet inspires me. She is a symbol for genuine beauty from the inside and out. With her strong personality she ignores the size zero trend and is totally captivating with her pureness and simplicity. An incredibly talented actress with passion, irresistible charm and integrity. How do you think you will dress then?
In a way that compliments the best of me!
Body areas as well as the face that are illuminated by light can be accentuated using light-reflected products, as seen on the woman’s legs, arms and face. The areas of the body that will not be illuminated by light but will be covered by shades can be accentuated with dark matte products to reinforce the shades. This is clearly seen on the cheekbones but also on the torso of the knee-bending man.

The man with the black hat only has one eye shaded underneath it. The eyeshadow Ghetto is brown-gray and melts perfectly into his olivetoned skin. First apply the black eyeshadow with the Angled Brush #110 in the upper and lower lash lines. Afterwards, shade underneath the eye with Blending Brush #108. If the eye is placed deeper into the face (only a small part of the eyelid is movable), add dark shades under the eye. Also add a light eyeshadow on the movable part of the eyelid and extend it to slightly above the crease line. The light shade should be lighter than your skin tone. This trick will make your eyes look larger.

Plus a transparent nourishing gloss for a natural but discreet luster.

Two concepts that are constantly used in makeup are highlighting and shading. But what do they mean and how do you use highlights and shading? The answer is to help your face look three-dimensional and to bring out your facial features. Highlighting is when you lighten parts of your face and shading involves playing down parts of your face by making them darker. Highlighting, for instance, brings out cheekbones and lips, while shading tones down a big chin or a drooping eyelid. The choice of products depends on the desired effect and result. Do you want a natural look, a festive look or do you perform and want a look that suits the bright stage lights?
Here comes a rock style you can emulate. First prime your makeup with Eyeprimer Clear so that the eyeshadows will become really dark and intense. The eye should be divided into two halves, right above the pupil when you look straight forward. Cybershadow Crow was added to the inner part of the eye, towards the nose, to create a nice metallic luster. The eyeshadow is light-reflective to make the eyes look larger. On the other side of the eye, towards the temple, the black matte eyeshadow, Pollution, was added. On the edges of the shading, a skintoned eyeshadow, Vanilla, was applied to reinforce the shape of the makeup.
Eyeprimer Clear Matt Foundation Toast Compact Powder Beige Cover All Mix Tri Brow Cake Eyeliner Black Microshadow Pollution Microshadow Vanilla Cybershadow Crow Lipstick Devil Eyepencil Black M  |  112
Depending on the shape of the face, different types of shading or highlighting techniques will be needed. Use shading underneath your cheekbone to make the space in between your cheek and jaw line darker and deeper. This will make your face look thinner. If you have a low forehead shade the temples. To make your nose shorter, use shading under the tip of your nose. Ask the professional makeup artists at Makeup STORE for advice and tricks on how to enhance your beauty. Shading products should be one to three times darker than your natural skin tone. You can choose different products for shading. Matt Foundation, Liquid Foundation, Studio Foundation, Blush, Sun Powder or even a matte eyeshadow. Remember to work very softly and use a sponge to avoid sharp lines by softening the products out towards your face. Shading should never create edges or visible lines.
Men who use makeup are growing in numbers. But their main objective is to reinforce positive features of the face with a natural effect. Before applying makeup, the face was moisturized with Skin Serum. Afterwards, a thin oil-based base and concealer were added under the eyes to conceal dark rings. The base was fixated with a powder using a large powder brush for a thin result. The cheekbones and the crease line of the eyelids were softly accentuated with a gray-brown rouge. The eyebrows were filled with Tri Brow, a dry eyebrow shadow, and then reshaped with the product Stay in Shape. The eyes were also accentuated with the eyepencil Vanilla. The eyepencil is used on the corners of the eyelids to neutralize the red inside the lash lines, making the eyes look larger.

If you have mature skin, on the other hand, avoid shimmery products. Use matte products that are brighter than your skin tone when highlighting and matte products that are darker than your skin tone when shading. Lustrous products will accentuate the fine lines while a matte product will camouflage the same lines. Shimmer products are to prefer on your lips if you have mature skin. The glitter will reflect the light, thereby highlighting your lips with an enlargening effect. When highlighting and shading, you need different tools depending on what product you apply and where you apply it. If you use a foundation or a creamy product for shading and highlighting, you should use a sponge or a foundation brush. When highlighting and shading with a dry and powdery product you should use a brush. If you are working on a smaller area and want an intensive result, you need smaller brushes. If you are working on a bigger area and want a sheer result, use bigger brushes.
To accentuate the shadows of the face more clearly, the base is matte and slightly paler than the natural skin tone of the model. To create this effect, a gray-brown rouge was applied to emphasize the cheekbones. The eyes were framed with a classic eyeliner, skin-toned eyeshadow and false eyelashes. Simple and natural. Some apricot-colored lipgloss was also applied on the lips. The eyebrows, on the other hand, were reinforced using the Angled Brush #110, Tri Brow and water. Dip the brush in water before dipping it once in each of the colors of the Tri Brow palette. Squeeze the bristles of the brush to create the thinnest possible tip. Afterwards, draw a new hair on the brow with short and quick twitches of the hand. Repeat the process until the eyebrows are full and dark.

Studio Foundation and Skin Serum were mixed to create a covering base with a light formula and some luster. The cheekbones and crease lines were reinforced with the sun powder Sun. Sun is completely matte and perfect for adding some color to your face with a natural effect. The eyes, on the other hand, were shaded more heavily. A black kohl pencil was used on the edge of the eyelid. The lashes were accentuated with the help of Angle Brush #110 and Microshadow Deadly. The eyeshadow was pressed into the gaps between the lashes to make them look brownish black instead of being skin-toned. This trick gives you alluring lash lines that look fuller.

It is confidence in yourself... With confidence you don’t need any hair or makeup. My must have items are: an eyelash curler, mascara and concealer, because I think everything is perfect if your eyes are attractive, and concealer helps with blemishes. I love blend & fix, cover all mix, and lip gloss. I love make up but I rarely put make up on myself. What is your best beauty trick that you would like to share?
Always always curl your lashes with a good quality eyelash curler. Even if you don’t wear makeup, it still makes a huge different.

if you have brown eyes, create a luscious eye makeup by using contrasting colors, such as purple and silver. a contrasting color is a color that highlights your eyes. Nonetheless, using brown eye shadows is evidentially attractive, particularly in this makeup. Softly create that smoky look with brown shade to balance the clear pink colored lips.

By using an eyeshadow on the lower eyelid creates an enlarging effect of your eye. remember to frame the eye, by merging the eyeshadow on both upper and lower eyelid at the outer verge of your eye. this creates an effect of sloping eyes. M | 129

Monica Ramos TEXT BY: Greta Sjöbom PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Micael Engström
The harp virtuoso who tears down barriers! Chilean born Monica Ramos is for sure not a traditional harpist. She is a modern artist that tears down traditional barriers, a harp virtuoso that has won both critics and public admiration for her extraordinary compositions. She has created three successful albums in the refreshing music style “Crossover/ Chill out“. The music has the classical harp in focus but is accompanied by other instruments and sometimes together with Monica singing. Her music is amongst others featured on the world famous “Buddha Bar” collections. Monica’s career started within the genre classical music. She has for example been a member of the “Stockholms Fiharmoniska Orkester” and “Radiosymfonikerna”. However, some years back her career tock a new turn with her individual modern music that is sold in over 40 countries around the world. Monica has changed the traditional associations people normally do when it comes to the extremely old instrument – the classical harp. Monica released her first album “Wind from the sea” 1993. In this production Monica interpret existing music, but there is also some new work from Per. The second album “Moai” from 1997 is Monica’s most successful album so far and has been praised in many countries, especially in the USA where it was nominated one of the top ten on the Billboard charts. The most recent album “Behind that light” was released 2001 and was solely composed by herself with the exception of two tracks. This album reached ninth place during one month in the American “New Age Voice Magazine”. Monica has her working field worldwide and we got curious about her thoughts and ideas about beauty. What role beauty and
makeup has due to her performances on stage. This is what she said: What is beauty for you?
A caring glance from someone you love. A warm and friendly pat on the shoulder from someone you work with. To be positive, affectionate, creating and polite.
and the Mixing Liquid. When I use them in combination on stage I am confident in the durability of the makeup. Do you have a particular rolemodel when it comes to looks? Please tell us who and why this?
Oh! Watch the old movies from the fifties and sixties, the makeup, the clothes and the beautiful women!
Tell us about your interest for fashion and trends.
I have always been fond of the old movies from the fifties and thesixties and love clothes from that timeframe. It thrills me when I see inspiration in modern designs from this era. Have your interest in beauty changed since you became famous?
It makes you more interested in the more genuine of each individual. The outside is not so important anymore. What would you wear, makeup wise on a normal weekday?
Foundation and at the very most eyeliner and mascara. And what makeup do you wear on stage and why?
The stage makeup is usually influenced by the venue. But it is important to me to enhance the best parts of me that I am satisfied with, and for it to correlate with my music. Would you be willing to share a few of your personal beauty and makeup tips and tricks?
It is always better with to little makeup rather than too much. Bring out your strong and beautiful sides that you are happy with. Usually then you don’t have to work so hard on hiding the flaws you don’t want to show. People see what you emanate! What are your favorite products from Make Up Store?
The products I like from Make Up Store are the Microshadows, Golden and Silver Glitter M | 137
“I have always been fond of the old movies from fifties and sixties and love clothes from that time frame. It thrills me when I see inspiration in modern designs from this era.” What’s your future plans?
I work with such talented musicians and have an adorable family that always inspireme. I will probably keep on writing and playing music. What will you be doing in 30 years?
Sitting next to my computer keeping myself updated on good music and everything else around the world. Enjoying life with my family! How do you think your style in clothes and make up would have changed in 30 years?
I might have the courage to wear beautiful clothes inspired from the old movies everyday! My makeup would be foundation and mascara.

Red lips are both feminine and luscious. Make Up Store has developed a product to fixate lip makeup and prevent it from bleeding. Stay In Shape, which is its name, is a wax product that is applied in a thin layer along the contours of the lips with the Synthetic Brush #211. Pull the lips taut before you apply Stay In Shape. The wax works as a barrier that prevents the lip makeup from bleeding into the fine lines around the mouth. Statistics show that the average woman will eat approximately 2 kg of lipstick during her lifetime if she wears lipstick on a daily basis. M  |  139

this makeup is comprised of a two-color shading where the lower eyelid is darker. the technique has a magnifying effect which is perfect because you can still apply a black eyepencil around the inner edges of the eyelids. the black pencil on the inner edges of the eyelids frames the eyes beautifully but can also have a minimizing effect. For a bolder eye makeup, keep the lip makeup slightly muted, even if you opt for some color. M | 140
even if you want to combine natural ‘unmade’ lips with a smokey makeup, it is important to choose the right shades of lippencil, lipstick and lipgloss. if you have olive-toned skin, opt for a beige nuance. the pink tone brings warmth to the yellow pigments in olive-colored skin. if you have dark skin, choose a golden brown shade with golden undertones. the gold keeps the look trendy and brings luster to the dark skin. Fair skin? Choose a peachcolored nuance with hints of pink and gold. Fill the lips with a lippencil that is slightly darker than the lipstick and lipgloss to avoid looking pale.

orange is a beautiful complementary color to blue eyes. a complementary color reinforces the natural eyecolor and makes the eyes more radiant. to lighten the corners of the eyes, use the yellow eyeshadow, Cybershadow ra. applying a lighter eyeshadow in the corners of the eyes opens the eyes and has a magnifying effect. avoid this technique if your eyes are set wide apart. in this makeup, eyepencil Vanilla was used as a primer on the upper eyelid. Color the entire eyelid with the pencil and tone out the color with the Synthetic eyeshadow Brush large # 206. then, apply the eyeshadows on top of the pencil color, so that the eyeshadows become more durable and intensified. Under the eye, the same procedure was carried out using the gold-colored eyepencil Czar. afterwards, the loose golden eyeshadow, Carat, was added. the combination of the two gold colors creates a metallic eyeshadow that shifts in different shades of gold. try this trick with different colors of eyepencil and eyeshadows for a really luscious evening makeup. Dictionary Important terminology for makeup from the 50´s.
1. Base: A normal base is a base comprised of foundation, concealer and powder for daily use. The shade of the products should match the natural skin tone or be slightly lighter. 2. Brows with a broken oar: The term, ‘broken oar’ refers to the shape of a pair of eyebrows. In other words, the broken oar resembles the shape of a rowing oar that is broken in the middle. 3. Crease line: The crease line is the line or crease where the eyelid becomes immobile. You can easily locate the crease line by gently pressing the index finger on the eyelid. The hollow between the eyebrow bone and eyeball is the crease line. 4. Soft crease shade: A soft crease shade is a darker eyeshadow that is applied in the crease line. Use Blending Brush #108 or Angled Shading Brush #115 and carefully sweep the color back and forth along the crease line. The crease shade not only creates a more deeply placed eye, it also has a maximizing effect. 5. Shaded drop shade: a drop shade is a technique in which a soft accentuation underneath and along the entire lower lash line is created. The eyeshadow should be wider in the outer corner of the eye and gradually become more fine and narrow toward the inner corner of the eye. The technique creates an illusion of a larger eye that is lifted up and outward. Avoid the technique if you have big or protruding eyes. 6. Mother-of-pearl shade: Pearly shades were typical for 50’s
makeup, especially light green or light blue colors. The eyeshadow should cover the entire eyelid upward to the eyebrow. Afterwards, the crease line is reinforced with a greyish brown or brownish black color. Mother-ofpearl or glimmer, which the shade is also called, refers to a group of common minerals that are stacked in thin layers in rocks such as gneiss, granite and glimmer slate. For cosmetic use, white glimmer reflects light, creates a luscious luster and has a velvety feeling. 7. Sweeping eyeliner: An eyeliner accentuates and shapes the eye. A sweeping eyeliner refers to a thin eyeliner that continues along the entire lash line and ends with a sweeping flick. Naturally, the eyeliner must be adjusted to the shape of the eye. Also, the eyeliner must be applied elegantly to open the eye and provide a maximizing effect. The flick should not be too thick. 8. Shading: Sculpting the face often involves shading and highlighting. Shading is a technique that reinforces the three-dimensional features of the face by shading certain facial regions. Usually, powder and rouge that are about one or two shades darker than the natural shades of the skin are used in this technique. Often, greyish brown products that are completely matte are chosen for this type of technique. Positive shades are beautifying shades and can be found in the crease line, chin shade (directly underneath the cheekbone) and the jaw shade. Reinforce these features with the help of shading. You can also use shading to play
down less flattering features of the face. If the forehead is to wide, make it thinner by applying shading right above the temples, toward the center of the forehead and outward to the hairline. If you have a wide nose, shade the sides of the nose bridge. For a poutier lower lip, shade directly below the lower lip. If the nose is too short, add shading underneath the tip of the nose, etc. Remember that shading should never be noticed but blended with the overall makeup. 9. Highlight: Highlight is often mistaken for a particular product. Highlighting is a technique that can be implemented in cosmetics. The highlighting product can contain shimmer or lack shimmer, and must be one or two shades lighter than the natural skin tone. Highlighting is applied in the regions of the face that you want to emphasize or magnify. But the technique can also tone down negative shades of the face, such as the ‘disgruntle wrinkle’ between the eyebrows, corners of the mouth that drop and a crease line that is too dark. Highlighting is mainly used on the eyelid, at the highest point of the eyebrows, on the nose bridge, the highest point of the cheekbone and the contours of the upper lip. If you have a short nose, highlight the tip of the nose. If you have a narrow forehead, highlight this area, etc. 10. Circle-shaped rouge: Shading and highlighting were the most important elements in the makeup from the 50’s. Circle-shaped rouge was also added to bring warmth to the makeup. Circle-shaped rouge is created in a thin layer on the center of the apple of the cheek.
M | 154
The round part of the cheek that appears when you smile. 11. Mouche: A mouche, derived from the French word for ‘fly’, is a beaty spot. In the 1700s, the mouche was used for cosmetic purposes by the aristocrats; mainly to cover syphilis wounds that plagued the population in those times. The wounds were camouflaged with a black spot, often in the shape of a star or some other symbol. The custom became popular very quickly and soon after turned into an important status symbol. The location of the mouche even had a hidden message. A mouche placed next to the mouth meant that the person wanted to be kissed. The mouche experienced a renaissance in the 50’s thanks to Marilyn Monroe. If you want to create a mouche, use a harder kohl pencil. Fill the desired location or dot and fixate the color from the pencil with an eyeshadow. 12. Rounded Cupid’s bows: For a perfect red mouth with a slight pout effect, make the bows round. You must be meticulous. Color that is added far away from the contours of the lips can easily be seen because of the light that reflects it. If you want to magnify the upper lip, be very discreet and continue to the outer corners of the lips. Firstly, draw a line in the middle of the mouth between the Cupid’s bows. Then, line the bows from the first line so that you create a Y-shape on the lip. Finalize the look by drawing a line from the outer corner of the mouth to the Y-shape on both sides.
