GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

Condolences to the family of New York's 106th Mayor - Honorable David N. Dinkins. (see page 10) I hope you have embraced this new “Pandemic Thanksgiving.” There have been thousands of turkeys and trimmings given out in the community as well as thousands of meals planned to be given out on Thanksgiving day. Those of us who have survived the Pandemic so far have a lot to be Thankful for. The 125th Street BID has kicked-off the holiday season with holiday lights on 125th Street. Last week a caravan of several floats traveled throughout Harlem spreading music and cheer. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer held a virtual Holiday kick off event and there was a virtual karaoke event. The message here is that we should plan to celebrate the Holidays safely and whenever possible – virtual gathering with friends and family. (see pages 12-13) Remember to shop with local businesses in the community this holiday season. Many small businesses are trying to recover from the shut down during the Pandemic and they can use your support. Also remember when you shop with businesses in your community it is more likely that money will continue to circulate within your community. Many of our small business owners live in the community and are raising their family in the community. See some small businesses you can shop with now and throughout the holiday season. (see pages 14-15). You can visit our website to see past issues, past videos, current events, subscription information, etc. at www.harlemcommunitynews.com. We are also on instagram and facebook.

GOLDEN LIFE WEBINAR: Getting Here to There During COVID-19

B

By Hazel Rosetta Smith y February of 2020. mandates had begun to crisscross the United States to combat COVID-19, according to the advice of CDC (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA.). Hardest hit was New York’s metropolitan transit authority in their effort to stop the spread of the disease in crowded subways and buses. The city’s senior population was in jeopardy with its major source of transportation to and from medical appointments. Access-A-Ride is the MTA’s New York City Paratransit Service. It provides transportation for eligible customers with disabilities that prevent them from using public buses and subways. This was the reason Dr. Marcella Maxwell, leader of the Golden Life Ministry of The Abyssinian Baptist Church, initially partnered with the church’s Health Ministry led by Linda Thompson and Rhonda Joy McClean of The Links Greater New York

February 2020 (L-r) Tammie Francisque, Dr. Marcella Maxwell and Shirley Teran-Marty photo by: Hubert Williams Chapter, Inc. to get information from the source. Dr. Maxwell said at that time, “If we don’t know or don’t understand how operations work in programs offered by the City, we cannot utilize the numerous benefits available.” For this reason, they agreed to review the operations of AAR and others to clarify what

changes if any had altered their services during the pandemic. On November 18, 2020, the first Webinar (virtual) meeting was held. AAR Outreach Coordinators Tammie Francisque and Shirley Teran-Marty returned with good news. Apart from the closure of its office for in person registration, Access-A-

Ride has continued successfully with online applications and certifications and telephone scheduling. Blue and white AAR vehicles remain visible throughout city streets picking up and discharging clients with their home attendant or singular guest. A noticeable change is the limited number of people per trip. The service is clearly defined from origin to destination to protect riders according to guidelines of sanitizing and operators wearing masks. Anyone at any age, with a disability is eligible to ride in an AAR vehicle from vans to cars according to individual need. The price is $2.75 each way, offering a free ride for the caregiver. After qualifying, reservations must be made 1 to 2 days in advance; IVR is Interaction Voice Response by phone for status of the vehicle; Subscription Service is a set weekly reservation; Appointment is a request for an arrival time at a specific place (pickup assigned by AAR); plus a free AccessA-Ride Metro Card for bus or

train with four rides in a day. (Contact: 877-337-2017) William French from the NYC Department of Transportation reported NYC disability parking permits remain secure. Anyone with a permanent disability that impairs mobility and requires the use of a private vehicle for transportation is eligible. A city permit placard displayed on the dashboard of the car allows parking at city curbside spaces if the disability impairs or limits the ability to walk. The blue and white city hangtag hung on the car’s inside rearview mirror is used in off-street handicap spaces like shopping centers, malls, office buildings, etc. Additionally, there are Metered Parking Waivers for persons with severe mobility disabilities that limit accessibility to put payment into a parking meter. Visit DOT website www.ny.gov/dot or call 718433-3100 for permit applications and information. Paula Goolcharan, Program Director of NY Connects-Manhattan provided information about long-term

services and supports, such as home care, transportation, and meals to older individuals and those with disabilities of all ages. It is their goal to assist seniors in remaining in their homes if possible, in addition to helping families and caregivers through the NY Connects Resource Directory. Alexis Leven, Director of Programs at NYFSC, The New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, discussed its continued dedication to helping seniors enjoy healthier, safer, more productive lives in their homes and communities, and to help them avoid premature institutionalization. Marcella Maxwell is committed to the mission of inviting those in the know to share information with seniors in their goal to live life like it is golden, hence the name, The Golden Life Ministry. In the past, the seminars have garnered overflow crowds from the community. The new normal of virtual presentation has not stifled the desire to keep seniors informed. Touché.

PONDER THIS! Patience and Perseverance in the Ark

By Hazel Rosetta Smith

N

oah and the Ark in the Book of Genesis 6:8-22 is a good read for all ages. To Christians it is biblical text, to others perhaps folklore, a good yarn to tell. Most can agree in some respects it speaks to our present-day plight, not too far-fetched from our pandemic dilemma. As the story unfolds, we find Noah was both shocked and leery of God’s request regarding preparations for

an upcoming 40-days of rain that would engulf the entire world as he knew it. In absolute obedience to God, Noah took on the command wholeheartedly and even engaged his sons to participate, much to their chagrin. Surely, Noah would have been the recipient of humiliation and insult. His commitment and daily diligence made him the joke of the community as they observed the building of the huge boat on dry land. Through it all, Noah did as he was told and lo and behold, the ark was built to specific dimension, filled with family and paired species as directed and the rain did come. Those who are familiar with the story will remember its ending was a new world and a new life for those who

suffered the flood and survived the journey. Others who read the story have overlooked the meaning of the saga and chose instead to devote centuries in search for the ark’s landing site. Finding the ark to prove its validity may not be as important as what we can learn from Noah’s story of patience, perseverance and promise that will carry us through the uncertainty of this ongoing pandemic. Tend the sail of your boat in comparison to Noah’s story of safety and ultimate deliverance. (One) Do not miss the command to get onboard, (Two) Like it or not, we are in the same boat, (Three) Accept the unexpected, (Four) Be ready, God may have a job for you, (Five) Don’t listen to critics, what do they

DIY Weatherization Tips to Keep Your Home Cozy All Season Long (Statepoint)

A

s temperatures fall outside, it’s time to get ready for the chillier months ahead. Most homeowners want to keep their home cozy and their heating bills low during the winter, but struggle to keep the warmth in and the cold air out. Weatherizing can seem daunting, but there are many benefits -- from reducing drafts to lowering energy use. Follow these low-cost tips to protect your home and your wallet. Give Windows a Makeover Windows add charm to any residence and provide protection from the outdoors, but also account for a significant amount of heat loss in the winter. Heat gain and loss through windows account for 25% to 30% of residential heating and cooling energy use, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Even if your

windows are in good condition, window insulation kits are easy, do-it-yourself solutions that will save you from sky-high heating bills, keep you comfortable and help with energy efficiency all winter long. Try Duck Brand Max Strength Rolled Window Insulation Kits, which add a barrier and create an airtight seal between the outdoor air and your home’s inside. The film comes with a pre-taped edge for quick and easy roll-on installation. Want to check and see if you have a problem with insulation? Hold an incense stick near windows, doors and electrical outlets. If smoke blows sideways, you have an air leak. Deal with Drafts Doors are one of the largest sources of drafts in any home and should be a top priority for homeowners this winter. From draft seals to door sweeps, there

are many DIY weatherization solutions to choose from that are easy to install and don’t require measuring or tools. Draft seals slide under doors, are removable, machine washable, pet-friendly and don’t damage

door frames. For example, Duck Brand’s Double Draft Seal insulates your door from both sides and blocks winter drafts, dust, insects and pollen for year-round protection. Don’t Let Air Sneak

Through Cracks While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to check for any cracks and gaps around doors and windows that can lead to heat loss. Weatherstripping doors and windows can save homeown-

ers money. In fact, air sealing an old or drafty house can save up to 20% on your heating bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. While there are a variety of gap seals to choose from, rubber gap seals can stand up to extreme temperatures that cause other seals to freeze or crack. Duck Brand Heavy-Duty Weatherstrip Seals work well for sealing large gaps or sprucing up old or damaged door and window seals. For a project selector, articles, how-to guides and instructional videos for more DIY weatherization inspiration, check out Duck Brand’s Weatherize page at duckbrand.com/ weatherize. Don’t wait for the cold weather to set in. Weatherizing your home can be an affordable and easy do-it-yourself project that anyone can tackle. Ready to get organized?

n Monday, November 23, 2020 at the age of 93, David Norman Dinkins joined “his bride” (as he often referred to her) Joyce, who passed away several weeks earlier. The Dinkins were married for 67 years. Honorable Charles B. Rangel said, “David Dinkins was a very long time and dear friend. I, along with millions of New Yorkers, with people all over the country and indeed the world will miss him. He loved New Yorkers and especially New York’s children. I will miss him, and I am confident that history will record the contribution he made to our gorgeous mosaic of New York City.” David N. Dinkins, the first Black mayor of New York City, served a fouryear term during the 1990’s, “David Dinkins will be re-

membered as a pioneer in the history of our city,” said Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte. “As New York’s first Black mayor, he broke barriers and sought to unify New Yorkers during a tense time in our city’s past. Dinkins established the city's first MWBE program, setting the course for minority and women entrepreneurs to prosper in the empire state. I am grateful for Mayor Dinkins' contribution to our city, which helped pave the way for others, like myself, to serve.” Under Dinkins’s term, the overall crime rate in the city fell 14 percent and the homicide rate fell 12 percent. It was the first time in more than a decade that the city became safer. The Minority Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) program he established boosted the award of contracts

to MWBE's by nearly 10 percent in a four year span. He is a founding member of One Hundred Black Men NY Chapter. “David Dinkins was a forerunner to Barack Obama. He was elected saying the same things,” said civil right activist Al Sharpton. “He helped to change the psychology of American politics, making it more inclusive and more progressive. Dinkins was born on July 10, 1927, in Trenton, New Jersey. After serving in the US Marine Corps from July 1945 through August 1946, Dinkins enrolled at Howard University, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in mathematics in 1950. Columbia University sent out the following release with statements from the Dinkins Family: “David N. Dinkins was a devoted family man whose love had no bounds. He extended his wealth of compassion to the citizens of New York City and beyond the five boroughs of its Gorgeous Mosaic. As we mourn his passing, we cherish the legacy that he left behind. He showed us how to care for one another with dignity and grace. He fought for what he believed in and never compromised his principles. As the 106th Mayor of New York City and the first African American to hold that office, our patriarch’s place in history is secure. He was a trailblazer who forged a path for others to follow. He will live on as today’s and future leaders trace and advance from those footsteps. David N Dinkins transitioned peacefully from this

life, at home on November 23, 2020. A memorial service will be held sometime after the covid crisis ends. He was predeceased by his beloved bride, Joyce B. Dinkins. He is survived by his children, David N Dinkins, Jr, and Donna Dinkins Hoggard; daughter-in-law, Paula Bormes, son-in-law, Jay Hoggard; grandchildren Jamal Hoggard, and

Kalila Hoggard Anderson; grandson-in-law, Francois Anderson; sister, Joyce Dinkins Belton; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, god children, and a vast number of beloved friends. n November 16th, the 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Manhattan Community Boards 9 and 10 kicked off the holiday season by turning on the lights on 125th Street. Over 80 people attended Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer’s virtual VIP Lounge. Over 40 participants came on the virtual Karaoke and brought cheers through their favorite songs from across the county. Three extraordinarily decorated socially distanced floats and Street Corner Resources led by NYPD traveled through Harlem playing music and bring cheers. It was exciting to see people dancing in the streets and running to their windows to greet each other and bring cheers. Barbara Askins, president & CEO of the BID said, "This has been a hard year for our community and although difficult, we could not let Harlem be dark for the holidays. Once again, it has been a great year working with our partners through Cicely Harris, CBD10 and Reverend Gerogiette Morgan-Thomas CBD9. We dug in deep and developed a program

that would be virtually and physically interactive and more importantly, it would pull together Harlem’s most precious resource – its people." While the lights on 125th Street were being turned on one by one, the VIP Virtual Lounge, hosted by Athena Moore, Director of the Uptown Office gave community leaders a space to come together and spread some cheers. Cheers and words of wisdom were heard from Assemblywoman Inez Dickens, State Senator Brian Benjamin, Assemblyman Al Taylor, Councilmember Mark Levine, State Committee leaders, Judge Michele Sweeting,

Dr. Joseph L. Tait, Harlem Commonwealth Council said “We are in perilous times at this moment. The lights are here and we are here – we are going be here – we are going to survive – you know why – because we have to. We have been told so many times in the past, we can’t. We went through the period of desperation, drugs and abandoned buildings. The fact that we are where we are today let you know we are an awesome people and will survive. Lastly, the BID is working with Columbia University on the CovidWatcher project on two surveys: one for the small business community and one for the individual. Combatting the Serious Effects of Digital Devices During COVID-19 (Statepoint)

S

creen time among children and teens has skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the cold-weather months, when families are more likely to be spending free time indoors, it’s especially important that parents and caregivers set schedules to help ensure safe, healthy and balanced use of digital devices, according to experts. “Digital devices and the internet have become absolutely necessary tools for kids, not only for school, but for connecting and socializing with friends. Unfortunately, these tools can often be used in unhealthy ways to fill a void left by the loss of many typical school-year routines,” says

Michele Havner, director of marketing, OurPact, a screen time monitoring app for parents. Research has consistently shown that more screen time is often accompanied by health and wellness challenges like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, poor sleep and reduced physical ac-

tivity. Havner says that parents can help kids build healthier relationships with digital devices in the following ways: • Being good role models: Parents are in many cases relying on digital devices to work from home and may also be facing some of the same issues as their children,

including boredom and isolation. However, they can serve as good digital role models by setting aside screen-free time for other activities, like art, cooking, music, exercise, crossword puzzles, reading and more. • Avoiding being punitive: This extended situation has been stressful for parents and kids alike, so parents should try to take a compassionate approach to the situation. When engaging children on screen use, they can start the conversation on the right foot by acknowledging the many challenges and stressors that the “new normal” has created for young people. This is also a good time to check in about what exactly kids are doing online and whether the uptick in

social media use has exposed them to negative content or cyberbullying. • Setting schedules: Screen use before bed is associated with poor sleep due to the blue light emitted by digital devices, which can delay the release of sleep hormones. If possible, cap screen usage at least 30 minutes before bedtime. While many people like to keep devices on bedside tables, consider turning bedrooms into screen-free zones. • Making it happen: Devices have become so important to children, they may not realize the negative effects they are having on their health, making getting kids to actually put down devices often easier said than done. In fact, kids will often defy ver-

bal limitations and warnings. Fortunately, parents can get a little outside assistance in making rules stick. One solution is OurPact, a screen monitoring app that allows parents to set online schedules. Using the app, parents can limit app access automatically for recurring activities like school or bedtime, and can block or grant internet access on a child’s device. They can even view screenshots of kids’ digital activity, helping them swiftly address usage issues like unsafe content and cyberbullying. To learn more or download, visit OurPact.com. While the new normal has meant an unavoidable uptick in screen time, parents can help kids strike a healthy balance.

3 Reasons to Opt-In to Vision Coverage This Open Enrollment Season (Statepoint)

f the year 2020 has taught us anything, it’s to prioritize our health – including eye health. And the best way to maintain good vision and gain insights into your overall well-being is to tap into your vision coverage and get a comprehensive eye exam. With open enrollment season running through December for many, now is the time to weigh your vision coverage options through your employer to make sure you’re covered in 2021 and can meet all your eye health needs. Insights into Overall Health Glasses and contacts aren’t the only reasons to see your eye doctor. A com-

prehensive eye exam can also be a life-saving measure for people susceptible to chronic conditions. Via an eye exam, eye doctors can help detect early signs of problems, like diabetes and high cholesterol, sometimes years before other symptoms show. According to the American Diabetes Association, an annual eye exam is also a must for those already living with diabetes, offering a simple way to prevent or delay vision loss caused by the condition. To learn more, visit vsp.com to see how an eye doctor detected diabetes in a patient, helping her avoid a diabetic coma. Digital Eye Strain So, what’s another reason to get a comprehensive eye exam? Hint:

You may be looking at one now -- a screen. With news and entertainment at our fingertips via our phones, virtual work meetings and class sessions on computers, and more time spent in front of the TV binge-watching favorite shows, chances are, you and your family have experienced a major spike in screen time. Before shelter in place, American adults could spend 12 hours a day looking at screens. During early lockdowns, screen times were longer and didn’t include the usual breaks. Even now, many of us are still spending more time at home in front of screens. This means your eyes are being exposed to the blue light emitted from these screens, which may put

you at risk for the impacts of digital eye strain, including headaches, blurry vision and severe dry eyes. When you take advantage of your vision coverage at work, you can schedule an eye exam with your eye doctor to discuss ways to reduce symptoms. One way is to add an an-

ti-reflective lens coating to your glasses like TechShield Blue, which reduces exposure to blue light and combats digital eye strain. Awareness during COVID-19 An eye doctor can also share tips on how to protect your eyes and health amid the pandemic. Per

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, touching surfaces and then touching your eyes isn’t thought to be the main way the coronavirus spreads, however you can potentially contract the virus this way, and in some cases, get pink eye. During an eye exam, your eye doctor can show you how to properly sanitize your hands, glasses and contacts correctly before touching your eyes. For quick tips on choosing vision coverage, visit SeeMuchMore.com. The reasons to get a comprehensive eye exam are clear. Eye exams help protect your vision and overall health. The first step toward safeguarding both is to sign up for vision coverage.

Gratitude

By: W.A.Rogers

T

his article was taken from my book The Art of W.A.R. Strategies for Self-Empowerment (see onuwon.com). We are living in a time where hope and faith will be important tools to stay on the positive side of the new age of Aquarius. If you are reading this article, you are blessed. No matter what your social or economic situ-

ation might be, your situation is still better than thousands throughout the world. We often take our blessings for granted. My grandmother used to say, “Thank God for another day.” “Thousands did not get that blessing today. But you did.” Having gratitude is a way of giving thanks for the many blessing we have learned to recognize. A common cause of depression is the inability to recognize our blessings. We become depressed because we focus on depressing things, things that we do not want. What you think about often will manifest in your reality. When we focus on the things we want in our life; with faith and without fear

and doubt we have the power to make it a reality. The more we practice and understand this blessing the greater our ability will be to have gratitude. In his wonderful book, The Science of Getting Rich Wallace D. Wattles sums up the above thought by writing: “If it is a new thought to you that gratitude brings your whole mind into close harmony with the creative energies of the universe, consider it well, and you will see that it is true. The good things you already have come to you along of obedience to certain laws. Gratitude will lead your mind out along the ways by which things come and will keep you in close with creative thought.”

It matters not, the difficulty of your situation; you can change it, for the better. We were born with that ability and that is a reason to be thankful, a reason to embrace the feeling of gratitude. One of the laws that Wattles was referring to is the law of attraction. Your blessing of thought manifestation can work against you if are not aware of it. Like all universal laws, they work whether you believe in them or not. Wattles warn that “The moment you permit your mind to dwell with dissatisfaction upon things as they are you begin to lose ground. You fix your attention upon the common, the poor, the squalid, and the mean; and your mind takes the form of these things. Then you will transmit these forms or mental im-

ages to the formless, and the common, the poor, the squalid and the mean will come to you.” So, if you are reading this dialog and you are depressed, be thankful the mind of the universe is sending you a message. Every day we have something to be thankful for; getting up is probably the most important one. As the universe moves into a new frequency the ability to embrace the feeling of gratitude will be especially important. Gratitude comes with the recognition that we all were born with special gifts. It is important to utilizing them wisely. Remember no matter who we are or what we have or do not have we all have something to be thankful for. I wish a healthy and Happy Holiday season to all.

HERBS ARE NATURES MEDICINE

M

By Zakiyyah

EN'S HEALTH - Most of my articles are for men and women, though most are usually directed towards women's issues. The next few will be dedicated to male issues – though out of the top ten causes of male deaths, only one is male organ specific: prostate cancer. The other nine are suffered by women as well, but happen less frequently to women than men. The biggest problem that men have are diseases that are the result of lack of health care monitoring earlier in life. Take for example, the progression of heart disease: "If you

don't get your cholesterol checked when it's going high when you're 20, and if don't get your blood pressure checked when it's going high when you're 30, maybe your blood sugar's getting a little high when you're 40, what do you think is going to happen when you're 50?" Last week there were a few formulas for male urinary issues, but here is an intro if you missed it. THE PROSTATE - The prostate is a male gland located just below the bladder, in front of the rectum. It surrounds the first inch of the urethra (the tube through which urine and sperm exit the body). An enlarged

prostate creates a blockage, which may cause repeated urinary tract infections and start the process of bladder or kidney damage. . . . As always, it was from Grandma and though it’s kind of corny, you look forward to it ever year: a blue or red envelope outside, a sentimental saying with a few bucks tucked inside. Other than bills, ballots, and ads, she’s the only person you know who snail-mails anything, but in “Dear Justyce” by Nic Stone, help can be delivered, too. The first time Vernell LaQuan Banks ran away, he was nine years old. His mother’s new

man had been beating her again and though Quan hated leaving his little brother and sister there, he knew it was safer for them if he left the house. And so he went to the park, where he met Justyce McAllister, who was also taking an after-dark break from home. They kinda knew one another; they lived a block apart in Southwest Atlanta and as it turned out, Justyce’s best friend was Quan’s cousin but that was it. See, Justyce kept clean, stayed in school, studied hard, and went to some fancy white college after graduation, while Quan was arrested the first time at age thirteen for

SUDOKU ANSWERS

stealing a deck of cards from a convenience store. The second time was for possession of a firearm. His third arrest got him labeled as a “career criminal” and three months in youth detention. By then, his mother had stopped caring what happened to him. And so Quan found his own family. He joined the Black Jihads, led by a man named Martel who ruled his “men.” Suddenly, there was someone who cared where Quan was and that he had something to eat. The Black Jihad took care of their own. And in return, Quan took care of them when something happened,

quick-quick-quick. Once, Justyce had visited Quan in prison and Quan never forgot it. On his darkest days, he thought of Justyce and how their lives were so different. And so he took out a piece of paper and took a chance at friendship...

Argue this: sometimes, is a choice really a choice? Or is it like a narrow alley with one way out, and somebody’s pushing from behind? That’s one of the hard questions inside “Dear Justyce.” Really, the entire

Harlem Community Newspapers | November 26. 2020

first part of this book is hard, starting with author Nic Stone’s note to her readers, explaining how this book came to be. It sets you up for what’s about to happen in the story, though it can’t prepare you enough. Not to be a spoiler, but Quan’s letters to Justyce are a gut-punch and what’s toughest to take is that teens – particularly boys, particularly Black boys – may recognize the raw authenticity of every page of it. The second half, though, is more fictional, with a Hollywood-worthy courtroom drama that’s a little predictable but that’ll nonetheless please an adult as much as it will a 14-to-17year-old. So hand this book to your teen, and be sure to sneak it back for yourself. “Dear Justyce” deserves both your stamps of approval. “Dear Justyce” by Nic Stone c.2020, Crown $18.99 / $24.99 Canada 267 pages 21
