What is the Selected Artists Guide? This guide is produced annually to assist members in sourcing excellent, affordable musicians and ensembles: as recitalists for promoting groups or as soloists for performing groups. The Selected Artists (page 16) have been recommended by the Making Music members who form the Selected Artists Panel. We are grateful to Dr Christopher Fifield, its Chair, and his co–volunteers: Jean Richards and George Wolfe in particular, plus Kumi Smith–Gordon, Alexandra Scott and Stephen Leeder. The two folk ensembles have been selected in association with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, the two jazz artists through the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and the Zelkova Quartet are winners of the St Martin–in– the–Fields Chamber Music competition. The six Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artists (page 4) have been chosen through auditions by a distinguished panel of experienced musicians. Subsidies and Advice The P&DG Young Artists are available for members with a large subsidy, and the Zelkova Quartet at a fixed fee of £1,000 for the first 12 engagements. The Artist Expenses Subsidy, available to smaller and more geographically remote promoting members, helps compensate for larger travelling expenses. In addition, the new Selected Artists Subsidy (see page 16) is available to smaller promoting members on bookings for the Selected Artists in this guide. The award was created in 1961 and has helped to launch the careers of dozens of young musicians including Steven Isserlis, Elizabeth Watts and Craig Ogden. It is made possible by the generosity of the Philip and Dorothy Green Music Trust, which promotes young artists and composers. How to book P&DG Young Artists Contact the administrator, Alexandra Scott (call 01782 638 092 or email ayca@makingmusic.org.uk), to check a subsidy is available. Once this is confirmed, book the artist as you usually would. Once the artist is booked, contact the administrator once more to pass on the date of the concert. Following the engagement, pay the artist(s), then claim the subsidy. If you would like to pay the artist more than £250, it is fine to do so, but please note the subsidy remains the same. Please note you can only claim a subsidy for one P&DG Young Artist in this guide. You will have to follow certain guidelines to acknowledge the subsidy in your promotional material and send in a copy of the signed contract to secure the subsidy. www.makingmusic.org.uk/PDGYA

The Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artists award celebrates the best of the UK’s young musical talent, at the same time as providing Making Music member groups with an affordable way of booking top–flight soloists for their concert series. Each year the award is presented to some of the UK’s brightest young musicians. Making Music then offers these Young Artists for subsidised engagements to its member groups, which pay the artist (and the accompanist where appropriate) a set fee of £250 each and claim £150 in subsidy for a solo artist or £250 where an accompanist is required.

Matilda is in her final year reading Music at CONCERTOS Trinity College, Cambridge and has been Torelli, Neruda, Haydn, Hummel awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Arutiunian, Pakhmutova. Other: Academy of Music in September. She made her Handel's Messiah and Hallelujah. BBC Proms solo debut in July 2016 with the BBC EDUCATIONAL WORK Philharmonic, and performed live on BBC Radio Matilda has led many 'Inspire' 3’s In Tune Proms Special; she is also a Park Lane workshops for the National Youth Young Artist. In 2014, Matilda won the BBC Orchestra. She also gives workshops in primary schools Young Musician of the Year Brass Final and the around the country with her trumpet BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award and was the quartet and the BOLD AS quintet. Double laureate at both the 2015 Hamamatsu and 2014 ARD International Competitions, Romanian born British pianist Florian Mitrea was a recent prizewinner at the 2016 RNCM’s James Mottram and Verona International Competitions. He has performed at King’s Place, St John Smith Square, Colston Hall, and abroad at the Bavarian Radio, Seoul Arts Centre, Bunka Kaikan Hall in Tokyo and the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. Jonathan has performed throughout Europe in many prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Grieg Hall and Philharmonie de Paris, and has appeared in broadcasts on Radio France. Educated at Chetham’s School of Music and Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP), Jonathan will continue his studies at the Royal College of Music on the Artist Diploma course as the 2017/18 Mills Williams Junior Fellow. Winner of the Suoni d’Arpa International Harp Competition, Rosanna made her London debut in the Royal Festival Hall at the age of 20. Emily Sun is the 2016 Gold Medal winner of the Royal Overseas League Competition, the first violinist to win since 1981. Selected Artists The artists on the following pages are selected by the Selected Artists Panel (SAP) based on various criteria, including reports from a team of listeners. The listeners use four main criteria: overall musicianship, engagement with the audience, presentation of artist(s) and their own reaction to the performance. Having assessed a range of information, the SAP makes final decisions with a view to selecting high quality artists across a range of repertoire, ensemble type and size. Selected Artists subsidy We are pleased to introduce a brand new subsidy of £100 towards the booking fee of any Selected Artists in this brochure. • The £100 subsidy is only available to promoting groups with an income under £14.5K/year. •

There are 35 subsidies available, limited to one per member group.

The booking subsidy can be used in conjunction with the Artist Expenses Subsidy (page 3) but please note that the latter is only available to groups with an income under £7.2K/year.

The folk artists were selected in association with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, and the jazz artists in association with the Worshipful Company of Musicians. Fees We ask artists for advantageous rates but it is always worth contacting them to discuss fees. We also have booking subsidies available this year (see below). Fees quoted do not include expenses but do include VAT where appropriate. How do you get the subsidy? • All subsidies must be requested in advance of the performance via an online form (see web link below). •

They will be allocated on a first–come, first–served basis (in order of request made, not the date of the actual performance).

PROGRAMME SUGGESTIONS Alma does not offer specific programmes. However the group covers a wide range of European fiddle music styles so it may be possible to arrange a slight bias toward, for example, a more English or Scadinavian or Eastern European set, if required. EDUCATIONAL WORK

Alma brings together award–winning fiddlers John Dipper and Emily Askew with guitarist Adrian Lever. Inspired by fiddle traditions from England and across the world, at the heart of Alma's music is the joyful sound of fiddles playing in harmony. Each member brings their own style and influences, including John’s work with Chris Wood in the English Acoustic Collective, Emily’s experience in early music (The Dufay Collective, Shakespeare’s Globe, Glyndebourne), and Adrian’s knowledge of Eastern European music working with Arhai and Horses Brawl.

Members of Alma are all highly–experienced individual and group teachers/workshop leaders. As a band their workshops focus on traditional playing styles looking at ornamentation, rhythm and accompaniment.

Graduates of Trinity Laban and the Royal Academy of Music, Holly and Helen have received high praise from concert societies and audiences across London and the UK. Notable performances include recitals at the Royal Opera House, St Martin–in–the–Fields and Cheltenham Town Hall. As a Richard Carne Junior Fellow at Trinity Laban, Holly expresses a particular interest in non– Western and ethnic instruments. Former Jette Parker Young Artist, Helen brings her affinity for French contemporary music to the duo.

Suitable for primary school through to higher education, Holly and Helen offer workshops and community activities. A variety of flutes from around the world are presented, alongside the keyboard instruments, and there are opportunities to 'have a go’ on more unusual instruments.

A versatile and experienced musician, Louise has performed in prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, St David’s Hall and Bridgewater Hall. She has also performed with some of the country’s most respected orchestras. Notable successes include winning the Harp Finals at The Royal National Eisteddfod and performing as a finalist in the London International Harp Competition. Louise was also short–listed to audition for HRH The Prince of Wales for the position of Royal Harpist and performed at The Royal Variety Performance.

EDUCATIONAL WORK

The Marmen Quartet is the current holder of Music in the Round's 'Bridge' Scheme, Associate Ensemble at Birmingham Conservatoire and Artist in Residence at Salomon Smith Chamber Music. It performs regularly in venues around the UK and internationally. The group’s mentors have included Peter Cropper, Simon Rowland–Jones and Oliver Wille, and it is known for its fresh, honest and communicative performances. The upcoming season will see recitals in Argentina, Japan and Sweden as well as a residency at Aldeburgh Music.

Highly commended for his imaginative and enticing recital programming, Matthew Scott is an exciting young British clarinettist offering solo, duo or chamber recitals. He is a former Making Music Young Artist and Countess of Munster Musical Trust Recital Scheme Artist. He was a chamber fellow at RAM with Trio Mirage; this has since expanded to form the flexi–ensemble, Ensemble Mirage, the members of which are 2016/17 St John's Smith Square Young Artists. Matthew is also a 2017 PLG Young Artist.

EDUCATIONAL WORK Michael is Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music and Kings College London (2015– present). He also does outreach work with Live Music Now (2013–present).

Michael Foyle won The Netherlands Violin Competition 2016, leading to his debut recital in The Concertgebouw and acclaimed concerto appearances with the Rotterdam Philharmonic “Astonishing...superlative. An Orchestra. The same season, he made his solo unwaveringly engaging debuts in Wigmore Hall, New York Chamber performance.” Music Festival and Great Hall of Moscow Seen and Heard International Conservatory. He also won Royal Overseas League String Competition, Salieri–Zinetti International Competition and Beethoven Society of Europe Competition. In 2016 he was selected as a Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist.

Nicola and Jonathan are an oboe and piano duo, who met at Cambridge University. They offer a wide repertoire, but have a particular affinity for Romantic and 20th century European music. Nicola was awarded the Evelyn Barbirolli prize for oboe and the Grimaldi Cor Anglais Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, and won the Jellinek Young Soloists award in 2016. She has played the oboe and cor anglais with the Orquestra do Norte in Portugal, Metropolitana Orchestra in Lisbon, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, National Theatre and Miss Saigon.

EDUCATIONAL WORK Nicola works in education; Jonathan has composed an opera for children, has worked for the Outreach departments of groups such as Garsington Opera and is the founder of a children's chorister school in East London.

Noted for the integrity and breadth of his musicianship as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist, Richard has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC 2, BBC 4 and Sky Arts. Recent highlights include recitals in Auditorium du Louvre, Bridgewater Hall, Cité des Arts, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Konzerthaus Berlin, Saffron Hall and Wigmore Hall, and recital tours of China and Columbia. Richard was represented by YCAT 2011–17 and studied at Clare College, Cambridge and Guildhall School.
