What is the Selected Artists Guide?

Welcome to the 2020/21 edition of the Selected Artists guide. Whether you are a promoter looking for artists or a performing group looking for soloists or composers, this guide will help you find excellent, affordable artists.

COVID-19 has created significant challenges for music groups, however many are finding alternative ways to work with professionals, from using digital solutions to negotiating with artists and venues to arrange performances that are compliant with social distancing measures.

Digital performances Although all the artists in this guide can be booked for in-person performances and workshops in the normal way, many of them can also offer a variety of digital options including livestreaming, so wherever you see the above symbol, please contact the artists to chat about what would work best for you both. Making Music members can access our guidance on how to set up a livestream and other digital solutions at www.makingmusic. org.uk/resources Livestreaming subsidies In these uncertain times, Making Music is delighted to be offering two new subsidies to help promoter member groups put on digital performances: Livestreaming Subsidy - Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artists (PDGYA) and Livestreaming Subsidy - any artist. Promoters of any income can claim these subsidies for a livestreamed performance.

The Selected Artists Guide is split into four sections.

1. The Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artists (orange pages 7-13) are awardwinning artists who have auditioned and been chosen by a panel of experienced musicians.

2. The Adopt a Composer project (yellow pages 16-19). These are talented, emerging composers who have been selected for their ability to work with leisure-time ensembles.

3. National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (blue pages 20-28) The singers in this section are all graduates of the NYCGB Fellowship programme, selected on the basis of their time as NYCGB Fellows, and their more recent work as professional singers.

4. Our Selected Artists (purple pages 30-60) are recommended by the Selected Artists Panel (formed of Making Music promoter members).

Artist fees quoted include VAT unless stated otherwise. These fees do not include travel costs.

Subsidies Making Music promoter members can claim subsidies for in-person and digital performances. Look out for the banknotes symbol and go to the relevant page to see what you can claim. See www.makingmusic.org.uk/subsidies for more details and how to apply. *New* livestreaming subsidies Promoter groups can apply for the Livestreaming Subsidy - Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artists (PDGYA) of £150 towards booking one of our PDGYA for a livestreamed performance (orange pages of this Guide, 7-13). The subsidy covers their full agreed livestreaming fee of £150.

Promoters can also claim the Livestreaming Subsidy - any artist which is £150 towards booking ANY artist, (not just in this guide), for a livestream performance. The full fee will need to be negotiated between you and the artist.

These subsidies are also applicable for pre-recorded performances for broadcast.

Selected Artists Subsidy The Selected Artists Subsidy is an exclusive subsidy for promoter groups with an income under £14,500 for in-person performances.

Artists Expenses Subsidy The Artists Expenses Subsidy is an exclusive subsidy for promoter groups with an income under £14,500. You can claim it when booking any artist, not just the ones in this guide.

The Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artists (PDGYA) award celebrates the best of the UK’s young musical talent, at the same time as providing Making Music member groups with an affordable way of booking the stars of tomorrow. Each year the award is presented to some of the UK’s most talented young musicians.

The award was created in 1961 and has helped to launch the careers of dozens of young musicians including Steven Isserlis, Elizabeth Watts and Craig Ogden. It is made possible by the generosity of the Philip and Dorothy Green Music Trust, which promotes young artists and composers.

All the Young Artists this year are offering digital performance options, including livestreaming.

How to book the Young Artists All Making Music member groups can book these young artists, but there are a limited number of subsidies available so please check with us before booking an artist.

Contact us to check a subsidy is available (telephone 020 7939 6030 or email info@makingmusic.org.uk)

Once this is confirmed, book the Young Artist as you would usually book any artist. To secure the fees listed here, and make sure to tell them when booking that you found them in this guide.

Once the booking is confirmed, let us know the date of the perfomance.

•

After the concert, pay the artist(s) and contact us to claim the subsidy.

Subsidies Any Making Music promoter members can claim the Livestreaming Subsidy - PDGYA of £150, which covers the fee for booking a PDGYA artist for a livestream.

All members can book the Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artists for in-person performances for a set fee of £250 (or £500 with accompanist) and then claim a £150 subsidy towards the booking fee (or £250 if the soloist comes with an accompanist). Please be aware that if you decide to pay more, the subsidy will stay the same.

You can only claim a subsidy for one Young Artist in this guide. Contact us for advice if you would like to book more than one, as sometimes exceptions apply. You will have to follow certain guidelines to acknowledge the subsidy in your promotional material and send in a copy of the signed contract to secure the subsidy. Winner of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition 2020, Hong Kong flautist Sirius Chau has been named a Young Artist of the Tillett Trust, Manchester Midday Concerts Series and Musicus Society. Recent highlights have included receiving the Tagore Gold Medal from HRH The Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Scholarship, solo recitals at the Wigmore and Bridgewater Hall, as well as working with the BBC Symphony and English National Opera orchestras. Winner of the ROSL Award for Strings, Eleanor has performed recitals and concertos at Royal Albert Hall Elgar Room, St Martin-in-the-Fields and St George’s Bristol, and makes her Queen Elizabeth Hall debut in 2020. Composers from the Adopt a Composer project Making Music's Adopt a Composer project paired a leisure-time group with an emerging composer, with the composer collaborating with the group on a new piece written specifically for them over the course of a year.

Since the project began in 2000, Adopt a Composer has created over 100 partnerships, producing hugely diverse works and performances in the process.

Many of the composers have had further performances or commissions as a result of being part of the scheme and several have been nominated for awards, including the British Composer Awards.

The talented emerging composers in this section of the Guide, who took part in the project between 2017 and 2019, were selected for their ability to work with

leisure-time ensembles. All Making Music members can book them for commissions by contacting them directly via their websites.

Chloe Knibbs is a composer and songwriter exploring storytelling, theatricality and sidelined voices with a particular emphasis on feminist perspectives. Listed in the British Music Collection, her work includes compositions for opera, song and chamber works and has received performances by Birmingham Opera Company, Riot Ensemble and the Hebrides Ensemble. chloeknibbs.com James Banner is a composer-performer working between jazz, contemporary and improvised music. A guitarist, composer and songwriter, Laura Snowden’s compositions have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Scotland and commissioned by Birmingham Symphony Hall, International Guitar Foundation and the Park Lane Group. Her song Live Free was performed in 300 simultaneous concerts in 60 countries for the charity Voices for Hospices, and she has appeared with her folk ensemble Tir Eolas at Shakespeare’s Globe, invited by John Williams. laurasnowden.co.uk

Nathan Dearden's music has been commissioned, performed, featured and workshopped by groups including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tippett Quartet, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, National Youth Orchestra of Wales, and Fidelio Trio. Anna Appleby loves folk and jazz, and specialises in writing contemporary classical music. She composed Turbines for Merchant Sinfonia, which explores nature and technology and captures the identity of the orchestra. She is based in Manchester and has written for artists including the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the BBC Singers. annaappleby.com Ben See is a composer and performer based in London. He specialises in contemporary vocal music. One of the pieces he wrote for Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra, We Want, balances the everyday things that young people want (like delicious biscuits), with bigger-picture desires about being taken seriously. Ben leads several community choirs, and various other singing projects and vocal workshops. bensee.co.uk Edmund Hunt's work includes instrumental, vocal and electroacoustic music. He composed Vita Hominum for The Singers, which was inspired by the early medieval history of the group's native Northumbria. Esmeralda Conde Ruiz composed The Other Ocean for the Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra, to accompany pieces of local film archive material. She is a composer and conductor, and has run interdisciplinary choral projects, including conducting a 500-strong choir of community voices at the Tate Modern. @esmeraldamusic on Twitter Gaynor Barradell composed Step Up, an imaginary journey by bike through Edinburgh’s streets, for the Edinburgh Concert Band. NYCGB Fellowship Programme The NYCGB Fellowship Programme is a young artist programme run by the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. The NYCGB select eight outstanding musicians to join the programme each year, and trains them to become ‘choral leaders’, offering solo and ensemble masterclasses, work experience with NYCGB’s junior choirs and on its schools' outreach programme, and opportunities to perform in recordings and live in concert.

Freddie was a member of the 2019-20 NYCGB Fellowship programme, and the 2018-19 Genesis Sixteen cohort. He enjoys frequent singing engagements in churches around London, and has recently performed with groups including Philharmonia Voices, Echo, and the Oxford Bach Soloists. Freddie graduated in 2018 from Merton College, Oxford, where he read Music with a choral scholarship, while also making frequent stage appearances, and singing in jazz a cappella group The Oxford Gargoyles.

Having grown up in rural Devon as an Exeter Cathedral chorister, Freddie has more recently appeared as a soloist with several choral societies across the West Country.

Freddie has frequently participated in educational work as part of NYCGB Fellowship programme. He led freelance workshops with Starling Arts, is an alumnus of Voces Academy Musical Leadership Programme, and was a staff member on former Eton choral courses.

Milette Riis is currently studying for a Master's in vocal performance at the Royal Academy of Music under the tutelage of Alex Ashworth, following a PhD in maths from the University of Leeds.

Milette has directed both the auditioned Chamber Choir and the unauditioned Symphonic Choir at the University of Leeds, and has taken part in educational workshops and section leading with NYCGB. She has also covered lectures on the undergraduate course ‘Maths and Music’ at the University of Leeds.

Her operatic experience includes Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana, Sally in A Hand of Bridge, and Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, and she has performed in scenes from Madama Butterfly, The Women of Whitechapel, and Sir John in Love, among others.

SAMPLE PROGRAMMES Full of the Highland Humours This collaborative programme takes listeners on a whirlwind journey into the heart of 18th century Scotland, through infectious folk melodies and new choreography from Highland dancer Kathleen Gilbert.

The Society of the Temple of Apollo This instrumental programme explores the music of this colourful group of Italian and Scots composers surrounding Londonbased Scottish virtuoso cellist and publisher James Oswald.

Ensemble Hesperi is a dynamic Early Music ensemble of RCM graduates, dedicated to showcasing the infectious charm and dazzling virtuosity of 18th century music through imaginative programming and cross-art form collaboration. In 2019, the ensemble, with dancer Kathleen Gilbert, toured ‘The Pheasant’s Eye’, a project celebrating Scottish Baroque music and Highland dance, supported by Arts Council England. Among other successes, they were selected as Britten Pears Young Artists for 2020.

The ensemble can provide its own excellent harpsichord for performances.

Sweet and Unaffected Notes An instrumental programme of late Baroque ‘galant’ music, exploring the charming airs and graces of a musical style which foreshadowed the playful clarity and transparency of Mozart.

EDUCATIONAL WORK Several members of the ensemble are Live Music Now musicians, and regularly deliver enjoyable interactive educational sessions in schools and residential care settings, based around Scottish music and dance.
