We are often bombarded with news of people being stricken or dying from various types of cancer or cancer-related ailments. My question when faced with such an overwhelming escalation in cancer figures is, why and what is the cause behind this increase? Is it food related or the environment we live in or even the lifestyle we lead?

When we eat, do we always think about the basic nutrition facts? We rarely care; what’s more important to us and even to the food people serving us is the taste and the presentation of the meal. More often than not, many food operators have limited knowledge of how the body works, how diet and nutrition can help prevent diseases.

Similarly, the impact of smoking to others around the smoker is something that is hard to ignore. Passive smokers are usually the most affected by the adverse effects of smoking.

Contrary to many beliefs, cancer is a disease that can be prevented; this has been proven time and again. Cancer can be prevented if we lead a healthy lifestyle. It can be prevented if we take some time out of our busy schedule to perform all the necessary tests that can save our lives and lastly we can prevent cancer if we choose to eat healthily and quit smoking.

At MAKNA, we organise cancer awareness programmes throughout the year as part of our role in preventive measures against cancer. On World Cancer Day, MAKNA launched its new touch-screen animation system, a computer-based programme to educate the public on breast cancer at Cancer Awareness Carnival, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Despite all these precautions, cancer can still strike any one of us anytime.

When a person is diagnosed with cancer his or her live undergoes a period of transformation, usually in a negative manner. The same goes for his/her family. At this point of time, a cancer support group can truly help to ease the sufferings and pain experienced by the patient.

YOUR BUZZ

Being an OUTLIER How many of us wish we were extraordinary? A majority of us perhaps but many still just get by day-by-day being mundanely ordinary. Nothing wrong with that BUT we are gifted with so much more and it is a shame that we don’t push ourselves to be great, just to be great at something, however small.

Since the inception of MAKNA years ago, I’ve realised that the human spirit is a wondrous thing. It is strong, even unbreakable sometimes in the face of challenges. How extraordinary right?

We would expect that when faced with devastating illnesses, most people would resort to despair. But surprisingly many fought back! I still see this everyday and continue to be amazed.

Why? I do notice that fighters are often those who have people around them as emotional support like family, friends and our MAKNA volunteers.

Being an avid reader with an inquisitive mind, I seek for answers in books. I recently read a book titled ‘Outliers’ by Malcolm Gladwell. In this book the author spoke about people who are outliers—in men and women who, for one reason or another, are so accomplished and so extraordinary and so outside of ordinary experience.

In ‘Outliers’ Gladwell wrote about not focusing on just individual achievements like how you hear someone say of Bill Gates or 8

some rock star or some other outliers—”they’re really smart,” or “they’re really ambitious” Well, I know lots of people who are really smart and really ambitious and they aren’t worth 60 billion dollars. Perhaps now we understand success has been so skewed towards individual achievements for far too long.

My wish is to take what is in ‘Outliers’ and try to put across to all MAKNA staff, volunteers and you dear readers is how much of a group project success is. When outliers become outliers it is not just because of their own efforts. It’s because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances— and that means that we, as a society, have more control about who succeeds—and how many of us succeed—than we think.

That’s an amazingly hopeful and uplifting idea.

WORLD CANCER CAMPAIGN “CANCER CAN BE PREVENTED TOO”

The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) initiated the World Cancer Campaign in 2005 in response to the Charter of Paris of 2000 established by World Health Organization/United Nations.

It also earmarked 4th February as World Cancer Day. Since 2006, UICC has coordinated related activities for this special day supported by members, partners, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and other international bodies. In Malaysia, MAKNA is one of UICC’s associates.

This year, the campaign’s motto was “Cancer can be prevented too”, focusing on how the risk of developing cancer can significantly be reduced through simple measures: •

Stop tobacco use and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke Limit alcohol consumption Avoid excessive sun exposure Maintain a healthy weight, through eating healthily and exercising regularly • Protect against cancer-causing infections

Annually, over 12 million people receive a cancer diagnosis and 7.6 million die of the disease. The good news is that approximately 40% of cancers are potentially preventable. As for MAKNA, various cancer awareness efforts were carried out during the month of February. We broadcasted daily cancer statistics, prevention and healthy lifestyle habits on our social media sites, besides having a special section for it in our website. Additionally, we also conducted several exhibitions, volunteer events and home visits during the month.

On World Cancer Day itself, MAKNA also celebrated the launch of its newly designed touch-screen animation system, a computerbased interactive programme developed to assist those wishing to know more about breast cancer. It was first exhibited during the Cancer Awareness Carnival/Karnival Kesedaran Kanser (3k) hosted jointly with Institut Biosains – Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Throughout the day, forums were held featuring renowned academicians talking about the global burden of cancer and its preventive measures. UniPutra’s staff also performed a series of preventive medical exams such as breast-self examinations (BSE), pap-smear tests, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), blood sugar and cholesterol tests.

PROMISING RESEARCHERS

RECEIVE GRANTS FROM MAKNA Three local talented researchers with the MOST PROMISING PROJECTS received a total of RM90,000 at the MAKNA Cancer Research Award 2009 to fund their individual projects in cancer.

The trio, selected from more than 30 applications were Dr. Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam (Mr), 30, Associate Prof Dr. Chong Pei Pei (Ms), 38 and Chuah Lay Hong (Ms), 24. The former two recipients are currently attached to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UniPutra) as lecturers while the Chuah is currently pursuing her doctorate in Pharmacy at University of Nottingham (Malaysia). Each of the researchers received RM30,000 at the event. The event was held and hosted by UniPutra at Serdang on 28 March 2001.

The Vetting Committee for the award consisting of five members was headed by Prof. Emeritus Dr. Cheong Soon Keng, Department of Hematology (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre)

since its inception in 2001. For this award, the recipients were reviewed and selected based on the degree of relevance their research with the objective of the award and how promising it would be in terms of benefitting the scientific and medical community and the possibility of discovering a breakthrough in cancer research.

Every recipient is also required to complete his or her project within two years and that it must be performed in Malaysia.

Researchers are also required to submit a progress report every three months and to also present their findings in an appropriate forum in Malaysia within a year.

From 2001 to 2009, MAKNA allocated RM875,000 towards Cancer Research Award and last year, RM150,000 was awarded to five recipients. To-date, the program has funded 30 researchers in total.

At the ceremony, President and CEO of MAKNA, Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin said that research was one of the various disciplines that MAKNA had set its sight on as its long-term goals. Besides operating a cancer ward, providing treatment, financial assistance, counselling, support, research is just as important as the others as it is aligned to the organisation’s corporate mission and objectives.

We cannot emphasise enough that our responsibility extends far beyond the everyday liaison and contact with patients under our care; whatever else we can do in making their lives better, including the promise of a cure is good enough for us to persevering for a positive outcome, said Dato’ Farid.

“These researchers, very much like the ones before them who were awarded grants are a special breed of people as they could have chosen to research on something else but instead focused on cancer. I am sure they must have done a lot of “homework” to have embarked on such complex and difficult challenges and analyses”.

In his speech, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, UniPutra Prof. Dato’ Dr. Abu Bakar Salleh said the Institute of Bioscience was set up for the specific purpose and function as the launching platform of research initiatives. In 2005, it began to house an additional laboratory facility that saw the start of the collaboration between MAKNA and UniPutra for cancer research.

As a result, several breakthroughs have been achieved including “Development of Broad Spectrum Cancer Vaccines, using New Castle Disease Virus as Anti-Cancer Agent”, spearheaded by Prof.

Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, the current Deputy Vice Chancellor for International and Academics Affairs of UniPutra, or projects which can potentially spur a wider range of activities such as the anticancer effects of Zerumbone from Zingiber Zerumet on human cervical cancer cells, jointly led by Dr. Ahmad Bustamam Abdul and Prof. Madya Dr. Sabariah Abdul Rahman, both of UniPutra.

“All these research initiatives have huge potentials in helping cancer patients, not just here in Malaysia but also throughout the world. The mechanism created within the Innovation and Research Department is designed specifically to enable young researchers to pursue their dreams to the fullest, from the conception to consumption,” he continued.

Cik Habiba Abdul Rahman Kecergasannya mengalahkan rakan sekerja yang jauh lebih muda. Itulah Cik Habiba Abdul Rahman berumur 63 tahun.

Berasal dari Klang, wanita yang kecil molek dan berkulit hitam manis ini sentiasa perwatakan ceria. Mungkin ini ada kaitan dengan amalan hidup beliau yang sentiasa bersikap positif walau dalam apa keadaan sekalipun.

Menyingkap kisah hidupnya pula, Habiba merupakan seorang bekas tenaga pengajar kebidanan selama 26 tahun di Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia. Apabila MAKNA mula mengambil jururawat untuk wad kansernya di Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (kini dikenali sebagai Pusat Kanser Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan MalaysiaMakna) pada tahun 1999, beliau adalah antara jururawat yang memohon untuk bertugas di wad MAKNA. Permohonan beliau berjaya dan beliau dilantik sebagai penyelaras jururawat, selepas bersara awal dari Kementerian Kesihatan.

Pada tahun 2004, beliau ditugaskan ke ibu pejabat MAKNA sebagai fasilitator “Program Outreach.” Antara tugas-tugas beliau adalah memberi ceramah kanser dan gaya hidup sihat. Kesungguhan Habiba dalam menjalankan tugasnya di MAKNA amat dikagumi. Keikhlasan beliau dalam membantu pesakit-pesakit kanser amat menyerlah sehingga tertubuhnya Kumpulan Sokongan Kanser MAKNA (MAKNA Cancer Support Group) yang antara lain memberi sokongan kepada pesakit kanser dan keluarga mereka dalam menghadapi kanser.

Memandangkan komitmen tinggi yang ditunjukkan terhadap para pesakit kanser, beliau telah dilantik sebagai pengerusinya. Selain daripada itu, beliau juga akan membuat lawatan ke rumah pesakit untuk memberi kaunseling kepada mereka yang memerlukannya.

Sebagai seorang fasilitator, beliau berkongsi maklumat dan pengalaman mengenai kanser, memberi ceramah mengenai gaya hidup sihat dan kesedaran kanser. Dalam ceramahceramah beliau, beliau memberi demonstrasi mengenai gejala-gejala atau simptom-simptom kanser seperti pemeriksaan sendiri payudara.

Beliau juga sedia memberi sokongan mental dan emosi serta khidmat nasihat kepada pesakit kanser, keluarga dan rakan mereka untuk meringankan beban yang ditanggung.

Selanjutnya beliau akan sekali-sekala menelefon pesakit berkenaan untuk mengetahui keadaan terkini pesakit dan member bantuan yang bersesuaian. Nampaknya, dalam kebanyakan kes, beliau berjaya meringankan beban pesakit kanser yang ditemui beliau.

‘BREAST CANCER MONTH’ CAMPAIGN

In conjunction with “Breast Cancer Month” in October 2009, Colgate-Palmolive launched a nationwide campaign in support of the early detection of breast cancer. For each bottle of Softlan Fabric Softener 2L purchased by the public, the company channelled 10 sen towards a fund to subsidise mammograms for less fortunate women.

With the support of the public, Colgate-Palmolive raised RM 75,366. Three cancer organisations were the beneficiary of this campaign, namely MAKNA, National Cancer Society of Malaysia and the Breast Cancer Welfare Association. The cheques were presented to the recipients on 5 February 2010 in a special ceremony. The fund was distributed equally.

Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women Controlling the epidemic of tobacco among women is an important part of any comprehensive tobacco control strategy.

World No Tobacco Day 2010 was designed to draw particular attention to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls. It also highlighted the need for the nearly 170 Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control to ban all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship in accordance with their constitutions or constitutional principles.

Women comprise about 20% of the world’s more than 1 billion smokers. However, this figure is bound to increase.

Male rates of smoking have peaked, while female rates are on the rise. Women are a major target of opportunity for the tobacco industry, which needs to recruit new users to replace the nearly half of current users who will die prematurely from tobacco-related diseases.

Especially troubling is the rising prevalence of tobacco use among girls. The new WHO report, Women and health: today’s evidence, tomorrow’s agenda, points to evidence that tobacco advertising increasingly targets girls. Data from 151 countries show that about 7% of adolescent girls smoke cigarettes as opposed to 12% of adolescent boys. In some countries, almost as many girls smoke as boys.

World No Tobacco Day 2010 gave overdue recognition to the importance of controlling the epidemic of tobacco among women. As WHO Director-General Margaret Chan wrote in the aforementioned report, “protecting and promoting the health of women is crucial to health and development – not only for the citizens of today but also for those of future generations”.

The WHO Framework Convention, which took effect in 2005, expresses alarm at “the increase in smoking and other forms of tobacco consumption by women and young girls worldwide”.

It is therefore important that tobacco control policies recognise and take into account gender norms, differences and responses to tobacco in order to “reduce tobacco use and improve the health of men and women worldwide”.

WHO’s call, governments can reduce the toll of fatal and crippling heart attacks, strokes, cancers and respiratory diseases that have become increasingly prevalent among women.

Protecting and promoting the health of women is crucial to health and development – not only for the citizens of today but also for those of future generations

The World Health Organization (WHO) selected “Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women” as the theme for World No Tobacco Day, which took place on 31 May 2010.

The WHO Framework Convention recognises “the need for gender-specific tobacco control strategies”, as well as for the “full participation of women at all levels of tobacco control policymaking and implementation of tobacco control measures”.

On World No Tobacco Day 2010, and throughout the following year, WHO will encourage governments to pay particular attention to protecting women from the tobacco companies’ attempts to lure them into lifetimes of nicotine dependence. By responding to

Recognising the importance of reducing tobacco use among women, and acting upon that recognition, would save many lives.

Although the World No Tobacco Day 2010 campaign focused on tobacco marketing for women, it took into account the need to protect boys and men from the tobacco companies’ tactics.

Saya merupakan seorang pelajar perubatan di Universiti Monash, Kampus Sunway. Pada bulan lalu saya merebut peluang mengikuti adik saya, Fatihah, seorang sukarelawan MAKNA melawat pesakit di Pasir Mas dan Rantau Panjang di Kelantan. Walaupun sebelum ini saya pernah menjadi sukarelawan dengan badan amal yang lain, namun pengalaman yang ditempuhi bersama program sukarelawan MAKNA amat berbeza dan lebih berharga.

Setiap ahli kumpulan mempunyai tugas masing-masing.

Kebebasan mengendalikan kes-kes yang diberikan tanpa sebarang pengawasan menjadikan saya lebih bertanggungjawab untuk membantu ahli-ahli kumpulan mendapatkan data yang diperlukan oleh pihak pengurusan MAKNA. Tambahan pula dengan kehadiran sukarelawan yang tidak ramai, walaupun secara bergilir-gilir, kami masih dapat menyiapkan tugasan dalam masa yang singkat.

Dalam menjalankan tugas kerjasama amat dititikberatkan.

Semakin lama menjalankan tugas kami, hubungan kami menjadi lebih akrab.

Pada hari kedua, kami melawat seorang pesakit perempuan yang tinggal dengan anak lelaki dan ibunya yang telah uzur.

Lawatan ini memang agak menyentuh hati saya. Kakak yang sakit itu terpaksa bekerja untuk menampung hidup sekeluarga dengan membantu kawan menjual baju. Saya dapat lihat betapa dia begitu gigih berusaha untuk menyekolahkan anaknya yang seorang, tanpa menghiraukan keadaan kesihatannya dan kesakitan yang dilalui.

Dalam keadaannya yang demikian rupa, mungkin dia berfikir dia masih boleh cuba memberi yang terbaik kepada anaknya, menjaga supaya kebajikan anaknya tidak terabai. Saya perhatikan dia tidak pernah berputus asa malah sentisa tersenyum, dan sekali pandang, memang saya tidak akan sangka dia merupakan seorang penghidap kanser.

semangat di kalangan kenalan yang menghidap penyakit untuk memujuk pesakit lain menerima keadaan diri mereka sendiri di samping cuba mendapat rawatan sewajarnya.

Dalam satu lawatan lain kami bertemu dengan seorang pesakit kanser kolon yang terpaksa menaiki motosikal dari Tanah Merah ke Kota Bharu seorang diri semata-mata untuk menerima rawatan. Kepayahan hidup kadang-kadang boleh membahayakan keselamatan diri sendiri contohnya apabila pesakit yang tidak larat selepas menerima rawatan terpaksa mengagahkan diri untuk berulang alik ke hospital.

Sebagai seorang bakal doktor saya berasa amat yakin bahawa semua pengalaman yang saya perolehi dalam lawatan ini tidak terdapat dalam mana-mana buku ilmiah. Lebih menarik hati lagi ialah saya dapat mengaplikasikan segala ilmu semasa belajar kepada kerja-kerja kesukeralawanan. Saya bercadang untuk menekankan kesejahteraan pesakit secara mental dan emosi apabila menjadi doctor kelak. Seperti kata pensyarah saya, “pendekatan rawatan yang holistik adalah yang paling baik.” Di peringkat universiti, kami diajar bahawa proses penyembuhan penyakit banyak dipengaruhi faktor sekeliling, contohnya faktor sosial (jenis pekerjaan, pendapatan bulanan), faktor geografi dan keluarga.

Oleh itu, kami percaya bahawa kami perlu berbekalkan maklumat latar belakang pesakit untuk seterusnya memberi opsyen kepada mereka yang tidak berkemampuan. Ini termasuk memperkenalkan mereka kepada kumpulan sokongan yang relevan seperti Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat atau badan bukan keuntungan seperti MAKNA. Cara ini dapat meringankan beban yang dihadapi, di samping mendedahkan mereka kepada pelbagai kemudahan seperti peluang pendidikan atau perumahan seperti program “People’s Poverty Eradication Programme” atau PPRT.

Kami juga sempat bertemu dengan Haji Hussin, seorang bekas pesakit kanser yang bersemangat kuat dan berfikiran terbuka.

Kalau semua pesakit dapat menerima kenyataan seperti Hj Hussin, InsyaAllah pasti ramai lagi yang boleh sembuh dan dapat hidup dengan sihat bersama keluarga mereka. Tapi mengikut cerita Hj Hussin, ramai juga pesakit yang sanggup tinggal di rumah tanpa menerima rawatan. Mereka lebih rela memberi alasan seperti mempunyai fobia untuk ke hospital, masalah pengangkutan atau tidak sanggup meninggalkan anak keseorangan di rumah.

Akibatnya keadaan pesakit semakin parah dan sel kanser mula merebak. Dalam keadaan ini, saya percaya sedikit kata-kata 18

VOLUNTEERS Setelah tiba ke rumahnya, harapan kami untuk membuat kejutan sempena kedatangan kami tidak kesampaian kerana beliau tiada di rumah. Walaupun begitu, kami masih ada aktiviti-aktiviti lain dan segera bergegas ke Kuala Perlis untuk beriadah.

Terkenangkan kata-kata Mama Gie (Koordinator Sukarelawan Kanan MAKNA) yang sentiasa menekankan agar setiap program yang dijalankan harus mempunyai kesinambungan, teringat kami akan sebuah keluarga yang terdiri daripada tiga wanita cacat penglihatan yang tinggal di kawasan berhampiran. Kami pernah menyertai aktiviti lawatan sosial ke rumah tiga bersaudara ini bersama Mama Gie pada pertengahan tahun 2009. Kami pun bersepakat untuk bergegas ke rumah tiga bersaudara tersebut.

Setelah selesai mengemas bahagian dalam rumah, kami semua bergegas ke kawasan luar rumah dan bergotong-royong di sekitar kawasan laman rumah pula. Setelah itu, kami berlima sempat beramah mesra dengan jiran serta Mak Su sekeluarga sebelum pulang ke UUM. Demikianlah yang dimaksudkan bahawa kerja sukarelawan boleh dilakukan bila-bila masa sahaja. Hajat asal kami untuk ke rumah rakan sukarela dan beriadah bersempena cuti hari keputeraan Sultan Kedah ditambah lebih mesra dan

Pada tanggal 17 Januari 2010 bersempena dengan Hari Keputeraan Sultan Kedah, saya bersama rakan-rakan sukarelawan MAKNA yang lain, iaitu Nana, Unes, Erni, dan Juli sempat merancang untuk membuat lawatan ke rumah salah seorang sukarelawan yang sudah lama tidak berhubung dengan kami iaitu Hafiz di samping bercadang untuk beriadah di Kuala Perlis. Kesibukan Hafiz berkhidmat sebagai pensyarah di Universiti Malaysia Perlis membuatkan beliau kurang masa untuk menyertai kami dalam program-program yang dirancang di kawasan utara.

Sebagai sukarelawan, kedatangan kami tidak setakat menziarah sahaja tetapi turut dengan sukarela mengemas rumah dan melakukan sesuatu yang dapat membantu keluarga yang diziarah. Ketika asyik mengemas, Mak Su yang pulang dari pekan Kangar kelihatan begitu gembira apabila mengetahui kami yang bangga dipanggil sebagai “anak-anak Mama Gie� datang menyinggah ke rumahnya.

FEATURED STORY However, fate dealt a cruel blow to Mr. Muniandy’s family. In August 2009, Darwin’s mother passed away. It was a huge setback for Mr. Muniandy. Not only that he lost his beloved wife, he now had to become both father and mother to his children, especially to Darvin is also very ill.

DARVIN RAAJ:

His other children’s love and support towards Darvin helped make his work much easier. His late wife had wished that Darvin’s elder brother to become a teacher and this wish soon became a reality as my friends helped him enroll in Seremban’s Raja Melewar Teacher Training College. Meanwhile, Darvin created history of his own in his school. After resuming studies in Standard Five, he sat for his UPSR Examination the next year and was among the eight students in school to score 7As. What an achievement! He managed all this, despite having missed out on his early education due to his illness and the death of his mother.

HOPEFUL FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE Once in a while in life we meet someone who will either change our life or make us realise that despite all odds faced in life, we have everything to be grateful for.

Mr Muniandy Sackari has three children - Darvin Raaj, the youngest was six when he was first diagnosed with leukaemia.

After two months of attending school in Standard One, he had to stop to undergo a bone marrow transplant treatment.

The donor was his own sister. To make matters more distressing was that Muniandy’s wife was a kidney patient who was undergoing dialysis three times a week. Having to care for two sick family members left Mr. Muniandy little time to continue working and be gainfully employed.

My first encounter with Darvin Raaj was when his father was looking for help to settle the balance to his son’s medical bills. After meeting the hospital director where Darvin underwent treatment, he managed to get it reduced. At Darvin’s school sports day, I was given the honour to give away some prizes to the students.

The only regret Darvin had was that his dearest mother was not around to see his success. Not only Darvin’s father, other family members and his teachers were both shocked and overjoyed by his incredible achievement. Even MAKNA’s volunteers

including myself felt very inspired with his perseverance and determination. We pray that God will see him through his education and help fulfill his ambition to be a doctor so he can serve patients like him in the future.

We only have boundless of respect for Mr. Muniandy as he is a shining example of a father who has relentlessly sacrificed himself for his family especially towards his late wife and Darvin. He certainly is a source of inspiration to us all.

CHILDHOOD CANCER:

KANSER DI PERINGKAT KANAK-KANAK:

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer, and the sixth most common type of cancer in children. Although other types of cancer can eventually spread to parts of the skeleton, osteosarcoma is one of the few that actually begin in bones and sometimes spread (or metastasise) elsewhere, usually to the lungs or other bones.

Osteosarkoma merupakan kanser tulang yang keenam dan paling kerap berlaku di kalangan kanak-kanak. Berbeza dengan kanser lain, osteosarkoma merupakan di antara segelintir kanser yang bermula dalam tulang dan kadangkala akan merebak ke bahagian lain, terutama sekali ke paru-paru atau tulang yang lain.

OSTEOSARCOMA

Because osteosarcoma usually develops from osteoblasts (the cells that make growing bone), it most commonly affects teens who are experiencing a growth spurt. Boys are more likely to have osteosarcoma than girls, and most cases of osteosarcoma involve the knee.

Most osteosarcomas arise from random and unpredictable errors in the DNA of growing bone cells during times of intense bone growth. There currently isn’t an effective way to prevent this type of cancer. But with the proper diagnosis and treatment, most kids with osteosarcoma do recover.

Risk for Childhood Osteosarcoma Osteosarcoma is most often seen in teenage boys, and evidence shows that teens who are taller than average have an added risk for developing the disease. Kids who have inherited one of the rare cancer syndromes also are at higher risk for osteosarcoma.

These syndromes include retinoblastoma (a malignant tumor that develops in the retina, usually in children younger than age 2) and Li-Fraumeni syndrome (a kind of inherited genetic mutation). Because exposure to radiation is another trigger 26

Juga, pada kebiasaannya remaja lelaki lebih kerap dihidapi osteosarkoma berbanding remaja perempuan dan dalam banyak kes ia melibatkan tulang di lutut.

Dalam kebanyakan kes osteosarkoma berlaku kerana kesilapan yang rambang dan kesilapan DNA yang tidak boleh dipastikan, akibat tekanan semasa pembesaran sel tulang. Setakat ini tiada cara yang berkesan untuk menghalang berlakunya kanser jenis ini. Namun jika dapat dikesan dan seterusnya diberi rawatan yang betul, ramai kanak-kanak yang menghidapi oesteosarkoma boleh sembuh.

Symptoms of Osteosarcoma

The most common symptoms of osteosarcoma are pain and swelling in a child’s leg or arm. It occurs most often in the longer bones of the body — such as above or below the knee or in the upper arm near the shoulder. Pain may be worse during exercise or at night, and a lump or swelling may develop in the affected area up to several weeks after the pain starts. Pain that persistently wakes the child up at night or pain at rest are of particular concern. In osteosarcoma of the leg, the child may also develop an unexplained limp. In some cases, the first sign of the disease is a broken arm or leg, because the cancer has weakened the bone to make it vulnerable to a break.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a form of Oriental medicine, which originates from China and has been practised for thousands of years. Moxibustion treats and prevents diseases by applying heat to acupoints or certain area of the human body. The material used is mainly “moxa-wool” in the form of a cone or stick. Cupping is a therapy in which a jar is attached to the skin surface to cause local congestion through the negative pressure created by introducing heat using an ignited material. Cupping therapy has the function of warming and promoting the free flow of Qi and blood in channels, dispelling cold damp, diminishing swelling and pain.

They also had the opportunity to be acquainted with a unique kind of Corporate Social Responsibility programme in the country, the very successful ‘Social Stock Exchange’, operated by Sao Paulo Stock Exchange (BM&FBovespa), the world’s third largest stock exchange.

The Exchange creates a pool of public projects run by not-forprofit organisations. Corporations and individuals can buy shares of each project to build their own portfolio. The shares are not intended to give any monetary return to the shareholder, but a social return instead. The Exchange regulates the transaction, prints and sends the receipts to the shareholders, supervises and provides feedback on the project through its webpage and several reports.

The Programme is supported by the United Nations and has inspired four other stock exchanges in Africa and Europe to adopt similar projects of their own.

Today, Brazil is one of the world’s leaders in soya bean production.

Jatai, a small town in the rural area of Goias, is the sole biggest producer in the country, with the highest productivity per acre.

Dato’ Mohd Farid and Matheus visited three of the largest farms in the area to learn more about them. This information will be useful to MAKNA since it intends to be involved in the production of soya beans and its derivatives for therapeutic purposes.

As the final stop, they visited Jatai’s Fight Against Cancer Association (Nucleo de Cancer de Jatai). Being a small town, Jatai does not have a proper centre to fully treat its own residents. Therefore, all the patients must travel to the closest cancer hospital, about 400 km away. The local bus operates four days a week and considering that it is a two-way trip, patients have to endure an eight-hour journey each time to receive medical attention. Imagine the gruelling journey just for medical treatment.

Between 27 November and 6 December last year, MAKNA President Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin went on an information gathering trip to Brazil to learn more about the social care system there. Our International Division Manager, Matheus Barrachi accompanied him.

After Sao Paulo, the team headed to visit Goias’ Fight against Cancer Association (Associacao Goiana de Combate ao Cancer) in Goias, a mid-west state in Brazil. Although composed of a research institute and labs, the association is mostly known for its cancer hospital (Hospital Araujo Jorge) – the main institution for this kind of treatment in the region. It provides care to more than one million people from five different states.

In the developed world, children on average have a 75% chance of surviving cancer, however the situation in low- and middleincome countries, which accounts for 80% of the global incidence of childhood cancer, is very different, with only 20% of those that do receive treatment surviving as appropriate treatment is not available or affordable.

“It is one of the saddest experiences to witness children and their parents in under-resourced wards unable and unmotivated to fight the battle any longer, just waiting in despair for the inevitable to happen, knowing that with funding from those able to help the outcome could be so different.” says a volunteer helping in a children’s cancer ward.

“The majority of children in the world who suffer from childhood cancer will die undiagnosed. This is largely due to the lack of awareness that some cancers are curable, poor access to information, late or no detection and lack of effective treatment”, says Benson Pau, Chairperson of ICCCPO.

Through the sharing of vital expertise and skills and the utilisation of valuable support from doctors in resource-rich countries, these combined efforts are already saving lives and reducing suffering.

Julie Torode The International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations (ICCCPO), World Child Cancer and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) issued a joint statement to coincide with International Childhood Cancer Day (15 February) highlighting the fact that these organisations are joining forces in the fight against a lack of awareness of childhood cancer.

15 FEBRUARY 2010 While there have been great advances made in the treatment of childhood cancer and subsequent improvements in survival rates, it is unfortunate that this has not reached the majority of children diagnosed with cancer annually.

“To improve upon this situation, ICCCPO, World Child Cancer and UICC are developing international medical partnerships to improve diagnosis and treatment. Through the sharing of vital expertise and skills and the utilisation of valuable support from doctors in resource-rich countries, these combined efforts are already saving lives and reducing suffering.” says Julie Torode, deputy CEO, UICC.

“This year ICCCPO and UICC through the “My Child Matters” initiative and World Child Cancer supported more than 40 projects in resource-constrained countries that will concentrate on the training of medical staff, the provision of infrastructure and the support of the ill child and their family,” said Gordon Morrison, chair of World Child Cancer.

On 15 February this year, organisations from across the globe participated in International Childhood Cancer Day, to raise awareness of the plight of children living with cancer and the imbalances that exist between the quality of care provided to children with cancer in the developed world as compared to the developing world.

It was once believed that most people needed to combine protein sources at each meal to get “complete protein” as their dietary requirements.

Now we know that protein combining at each meal is not necessary. In a Journal of The American Dietetic Association published in June 2003, it was stated that: “Research indicates that an assortment of plant foods eaten over the course of a day can provide all essential amino acids and ensure adequate nitrogen retention and use in healthy adults, thus complementary proteins do not need to be consumed at the same meal.”

The below listings are based on a 100 gram serving of each (the equivalent of 3.53 ounces), listed in a descending order from the highest amount of protein to the lowest amount of protein. We ended the table at a protein level of 4.5 grams, then added “Milk, Human” (breast milk) for comparison and added other foods with the same level of protein.

Keep in mind, human milk contains the protein intended for infants to grow and develop.
