PRESIDENT’S DESK

Dear friends and supporters, the fight continues I am above all, a man on a mission. I have worn many hats; from a loving son, a lawyer, a husband, a father, a reluctant politician, a social entrepreneur and the list goes on. Nevertheless I am always driven by this same desire to see wrongs righted, to help the under-served and to balance the scales of injustice as much as I can.

MAKNA came to light to help those stricken with a deadly disease that not only take a life but ruin families as well. MAKNA now leads a large collective and powerful force in the fight against cancer. We however live in an ever changing world. As a social entrepreneur, I am not limiting MAKNA and myself to just the traditional forms of fund raising. The constant theme in my life is to make a difference.

I have to keep myself on my toes and the people around me constantly motivated as the number of people who need our help grows each year.

We have to keep innovating, keep fighting and keep proving ourselves.

Being the first or the leader is no longer enough.

I started MAKNA then with a goal and a vision to never let the human spirit down. We in MAKNA are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

We need to do the near impossible to keep on giving back to the people who sorely need help and I start this year with once again thanking you, our donors and partners for your generosity. You keep us strong and you allow us to be innovative in our mission.

In October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, private healthcare company Columbia Asia raised RM10,000 for MAKNA. The eight participating Columbia Asia Hospitals are Puchong, Seremban, Taiping, Miri, Bintulu, Nusajaya, Bukit Rimau and Setapak. Each put in a conscientious effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and stress the importance of early screenings.

Two Pink Ribbon cupcakes and a Pink Ribbon keychain were sold together at RM10 a set to members of the public. Apart from this, each participating Columbia Asia hospital gave more value to their BCA campaign by adding on extra activities/programmes. Columbia Asia Hospital-Puchong offered free mammograms every Saturday in the month of October. Other activities at other hospitals include women’s health and wellness workshops as well as talks on breast cancer.

Throughout the breast cancer awareness campaign, Columbia Asia hospitals worked hand in hand with LPPKN to increase awareness on self-breast examinations and to arrange referrals, following results of mammograms. MAKNA also set up booths on hospital premises to generate more awareness on breast cancer through fact sheets and visual displays. The beauty company for women, Avon, was involved in this campaign too. Taking care of one’s appearance can instil a sense of confidence and empowerment, especially for breast cancer patients and survivors.

CEO of Columbia Asia (Southeast Asia), Mr. Kelvin Tan presented a cheque of RM10,000 to MAKNA General Manager, Pn. Farahida Mohd Farid at a cheque presentation ceremony held at Columbia Asia Hospital-Setapak on 8th November. At the event, accomplished singer and breast cancer survivor, Pn. Salamiah Hassan shared her personal experience and entertained guests with a song titled “Wanita”.

TEAM Inspiring HOPE Possibilities

If you had 6 months to live, if your very being will cease to exist in 180 days, how would you like to be remembered?

But, what if we were given a definite expiration date? (To be as direct as possible)

What are the memories you would like to hold with you before you bid farewell to the people closest to you?

Every one of us at Team Hope had to deal with Cancer. We were not on the receiving end of the disease, but we were all victims nonetheless.

Some have lost family members to cancer and some saw the people closest to them triumph in their battle against cancer. The unifying and common denomination remains the same - We were all victims of cancer. As such, we decided to organize an event to acknowledge cancer patients and survivors alike, of their battle against the disease. The objective of the event was to inspire patients to fight the good fight and live a purposeful life. To realise the possibilities in life once they decide to live passionately. The event was themed “Inspiring Possibilities�.

Often times we are caught in the drift of life, the very breeze that ascertains the way we live. The choices we make reflect the way we are taught to portray ourselves. The idea of living out of the rigid box we call life, is more often than not, unheard of rather unaccepted or even sometimes rebellious.

What will our choices be then?

With the objective in place, we set out to realise this dream and purpose we unanimously believed in. We sought help from MAKNA and well-wishers whom, without their participation, this event would have never come to fruition.

There were trials and daunting tribulations.

Nevertheless, we persevered as this was for very special people. That statement became our mantra in the days that followed.

On the 16th of February 2013, at the break of dawn, the first hot air balloon was launched, with the rising sun as a backdrop, the image painted was stupendous. Droves of people were walking in, registering at the counter, excited at the prospect of the day of fun that awaits them.

crowd. Laughter filled the air. Joy was abundant in every living being at the event.

Members of Team Hope were all smiles, their eyes brimmed with tears.

Then it happened.; At the very pinnacle of the Twin Peaks Booth, a monstrosity that is 12 feet in height and 8 feet in width, stood a one-legged man, raising his hand in triumph, obviously happy with his achievement. Some of us looked at each other and internalized the experience.

From a distance, the sounds of helicopter propellers against the still sky filled the air.

Hearts leaped, little screams of joy heard, it truly was a beautiful sight.

Participants were seen zipping from one booth to another, riding hot air balloons, helicopters, horizontal bungee runs, bucking bulls. Bands could be heard belting out tunes over the PA system. Celebrities such as JJ from Red FM, Prem from Fly.fm and Michelle and Reem from Astro’s Football Overload were happily mingling with the www.makna.org.my www.makna.org.my

NEWS & HAPPENINGS We believed the purpose of the event was to inspire the patients to live life to the fullest.

We wanted to be the source of inspiration to the patients. But as the day drew to a close, under the scorching Putrajaya sun, a new realisation dawned upon the lot of us; We were inspired.

The patients have instilled new belief in us. That regardless of what society or life throws at you, if your intention is clear and your belief is solid, anything is possible.

A 12 year old girl wrote on the message board, a note that will forever be etched in our hearts. “Be Happy”. One of our members asked her the meaning behind this message, she merely uttered these words: “If I choose to be happy, I won’t feel the pain”. The wisdom behind those words were beyond her years. Often times, we choose to feel angry or sad when instead, life holds a series

of different, positive choices for us that are readily available should we choose to look at life differently.

They say, to change a man’s world, all you need to do is change his eyes. Inspiring Possibilities changed our world, simply because it changed our point of view.

Team Hope would like to thank MAKNA, Trident Events, ActiveBugs, Asiaworks and Prema Yin, Peter Ong, Dina Nadzir, Elvira Arul, Junji Delfino, JJ Red FM, Prem Fly.fm, Michelle and Reem from Astro’s Football Overload, Dato’ Soh Chin Aun, all well-wishers and volunteers of the event.

The biggest thank you, however, goes to the cancer patients and survivors who participated on that day. You have forever changed the lives of these 11 people. May God bless you always.

Relay for Life MAKNA staff & volunteers turned up in full spirit to commemorate the Relay For Life Malaysia at the Stadium UKM, Bangi on 13 October 2012.

Cancer organisations bring together passionate volunteers, promote their missionbased activities, and mobilize community members to take action in the fight against cancer.

Teams of people camped out at Stadium UKM and took turns walking and/or running around the stadium track at all times during the event.

Because cancer never sleeps, the relay is always an overnight event.

Relay is a moving celebration of cancer survivorship. The event begins with a Survivors Lap in which cancer survivors take a victory lap around the track. A candlelight ceremony is held later in the evening to honor cancer survivors and remember those who we’ve lost to this disease.

Relay For Life is the main volunteerdriven cancer fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Originating in the United States, the Relay For Life event has spread to 21 countries, an international movement to end cancer.

Relay For Life Malaysia is organised by the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM).

MAKNA Founder’s Run –

A Dream, A Reality, A Legacy

On the beautiful breezy morning that was 31st March 2013, the space that makes up Padang Merbuk, Kuala Lumpur was filled to its brim and buzzing with activity as participants of the inaugural MAKNA Founders Run were all enthusiastically gathered.

Dressed in their best sports attires, accessorized with striking white and purple running vest and of course fuelled by profound anticipation, participants of all walks of life were gathered as early as 6 a.m. in what would be a great celebration of health, fitness and active lifestyles.

With as many as 7 categories catered to the estimated 3,200 participants, it was quite the sight to see some participants standing at a mere 3 feet tall surrounded by determined veterans. Instructor from Celebrity Fitness headed the warm up session.

Participants were busy preparing their muscles and connective tissues for the challenge that lies ahead and before they knew it, the time for the race had arrived.

Anxious little ones, who by then could no longer hold in their excitement, were flagged off for their 3km fun run at 7.20 a.m. By 8.30 a.m. the supportive crowd could be heard cheering on the participants to the finishing line. Some running, some jogging and some just walking, one by one, they crossed the finish line with a smile on their faces and a sense of accomplishment.

The very reason for MAKNA’s existence, is due to the impact cancer has had on Dato’ Farid’s family. At age 17, his only son Farul Rafiq, was diagnosed with Leukaemia and his best shot at recovery was to undergo bone marrow transplant in the UK. Being in the right place at the right time, as the Deputy Minister of Health, Dato’ Farid exhausted all his resources to ensure his son received the best treatment possible. It was while he was undergoing treatment that Dato’ Farid and his family made a promise to God that upon their return to Malaysia, they will set up a cancer organisation and ensure every poor and underprivileged cancer patient, gains access to treatment. With that pledge, MAKNA was founded. Farul made a full recovery from cancer but unfortunately succumbed to lung fibrosis in August 2011.

Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin in his speech thanked the participants, sponsors and volunteers for rising up and joining hands in the fight against cancer. “Each one of you here has contributed in helping boost the morale of cancer patients and remind them that cancer is not a battle that has to be fought alone”. He also added that it humbled him to see so many people gain accessibility to treatment and have their lives changed, all entailing from the passing of his son.

The prize giving ceremony took place soon after with Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin flanked by sponsors giving away prizes to winners amidst loud cheers by all those assembled. Most notable was the prize giving ceremony of the 3km fun run whereby the winners were chosen by the crowd themselves, to say the crowd was loud and boisterous certainly was an understatement.

The icing on the cake was the lucky draw that saw a participant walk away with 2 return air tickets to any ASEAN destination courtesy of Air Asia Foundation.

Program dipenuhi dengan sessi soal jawab berkaitan kanser dan MAKNA oleh Cik Habiba Abdul Rahman, Outreach Programme Facilitator MAKNA. Sharing moment bersama saya dan dua lagi wira kanser Pn. Zuraida & Pn. Zaleha menarik minat penonton mendalami kesihatan mengenai kanser, kesedaran awal dan cara-cara memberi sokongan kepada pesakit kanser dan keluarga.

Sempena Bulan Oktober Kanser Payudara, pada 28 Oktober, kami diundang untuk berbuka booth MAKNA dan terlibat dalam acara kesedaran kanser oleh Pantai Hospital Batu Pahat di Square One Shopping Mall. Saya bersama wira-wira kanser, sukarelawan dan MyGc (MAKNA Youth Gorgeous Club) hadiri majlis tersebut. NOVEMBER Saya menghadiri aktiviti lawatan ke Hospital Sultan Ismail, JB, unit rawatan Pesakit kanser dan reflaksi bersama Penasihat Akademik, Dr Noriza Mohd Jamal (Senior Lecturer, UTM Skudai) dan sukarelawan MAKNA Johor. Program ini telah dianjurkan oleh Kelab Perakaunan UTM, Fakulti Pengurusan dan Pembangunan Sumber Manusia UTM, Skudai, Tahun Satu.

Pada 25 November 2012, seramai 46 pelajar telah mengikuti program bertujuan membuka minda mahasiswa tahun satu mengenai cabaran serta masalah yang dihadapi oleh masyarakat sekitar serta memberi input dan kesedaran serta penekanan mengenai cara mengawal tekanan serta emosi dalam kehidupan apabila menghadapi permasalahan berkaitan kesihatan.

Apa lagi, sekarang dah hujung November dan pada 16 Disember pula, kami sibuk dengan urusan Walk for Charity yang akan diadakan di Dataran Penggaram Batu Pahat. Saya dibantu oleh secretariat Pak Mokhtar Wasikon (bekas pesakit kanser), Zuraida Ahyat, Masliza Dugel, Norul Izzah Hj Khamsan, Shaznoor Shafilaz, suami saya En. Saharuddin Shawal dan Penyelaras Rumah Perantaraan MAKNA Johor (RPMJ) Puan Arinyitah Janam.

DISEMBER Aktiviti jalan ini dinamakan “Walk For Charity & Hore-Hore after SPM”. Hore-Hore after SPM sebab, bolehlah sukarelawan remaja dapat bersukaneka dan rasa stressfree selepas peperiksaan SPM. Mahu tidak budak SPM rasa stress mengulangkaji pelajaran, saya penuh stress mencari sponsor untuk menjayakan acara ini.

Mujurlah, secretariat sangat komited.

Acara diteruskan dengan band performance dari MyGc, cabutan bertuah di selangseli dengan sharing moment dan penganugerahan Blue Vest kepada bakal Volunteer Leader yang dikenal pasti adalah ‘next line of leaders‘ yang akan mengembangkan network sukarelawan. Sempena Hari Sukarelawan Sedunia yang jatuh pada 4 Disember lalu, Blue Vest dianugerahkan di acara ini oleh Mr. Vemanna turut dikendalikan oleh Mama Gie, Penyelaras Kanan Sukarelawan. Majlis perasmian penutup program pula oleh Dato’ Noraini Binti Hj Ahmad, Ahli Parlimen Parit Sulong.

Do Something, touch somebody

Mr. PC Jacob Mathews, 69 is someone you may have known for a long time, and this gentleman who hails from Banting, needs no introduction. He is known for his social services long before some of us were even born. Today, the fire in him is still going strong.

Being a cancer survivor himself, he has dedicated his retirement time to continuously indulge in social work apart from spending time with his daughter, sons, daughter’s in-law, son in-law, grandchildren and his beloved wife, Mrs. Sally.

Volunteerism is his second nature per se, and that is the very reason he is deemed our “Excellence” volunteer. On 30 December 2012, he and his committee organised the 12km Morib Run open to all Malaysians. The 8 category, 12km run attracted over 2,000 runners; some seasoned runners and some, amateurs who ran for the joy of it.

set up to do just that. Children were curious and some were shocked to see cancer related items and photos on display. The curiosity got them engaged with the topic of cancer and that lead to many questions being asked to which Mama Gie (Fadzilah Wan, Senior Volunteer Coordinator) answered to all their inquisitive curiosity.

There are many lives that Mr. Jacob has touched, and one in particular is 16 years old Darvin Raaj whom Mr. Jacob had nurtured out of cancer. Mr. Jacob was his mentor, he stood beside Darvin’s family at their most trying times; Darvin was being treated for cancer, his mother, treated for kidney failure, his father had lost his job and both parents had to care for 2 other school going children. To make matters worse, just one week before Darvin’s UPSR examination, his mother passed away.

This proved to be of no hindrance to Darvin who is determined to become a doctor. He scored 7A’s in the UPSR examination despite all the trials and tribulations he went through during the examination. His achievements’ did not stop there, in last year’s PMR, he scored 8A’s.

VOLUNTEERISM SELANGOR Another great help that had seen a mixture of happiness & sorrow is Puan Hasni Ngah who passed away peacefully in August 2010 leaving behind 4 children under the care of their grandmother. While battling breast cancer, Mr. Jacob along with his wife, Mrs. Daisy were Puan Hasni’s pillar of strength and hope in ensuring her children are well taken care off after her departure.

They coaxed Hasni to continue with her treatment which she had once denied. All these help comfort her at the end stages of battling cancer.

One thing that remains fresh in the mind of Mr. Jacob is Hasni’s funeral. Mr. Jacob and his team were a little delayed and would have missed bidding their last farewell when the hearse had left to the burial grounds. But mysteriously the hearse stalled and that required her remains to be transferred to another van. In the process of transferring, Mr. Jacob and team were able to meet the remains halfway and were able to pay their last respects.

There is no explanation of why and what had happened, but the irony is the hearse that stalled unknowingly started with a click of the ignition after the van left with Hasni’s remains. The villagers then commented “Mr. Jacob, Hasni waited for you”. God works is different ways.

Now, the children continue living with their grandmother and receive assistance from SOCSO for their education which Mr. Jacob had once promised Hasni.

In 2003 Mr. Jacob touched the life of a 39 year old father with 5 school going children. Mr. Ananthan Munusamy’s treatment for Colon Cancer was too much for him to bear. Mr. Jacob was able to refer him from a private hospital to a government hospital. This was a great relief to Mr. Ananthan and his family.

Now, after 10 years, Mr. Ananthan is – happy to see his 2 daughters married and the others continuing with their studies. “Mr. Jacob whom I have known for many years is the kind of – person one will come across only once in their lifetime – a blessing.”, expressed Mr. Ananthan and his wife Vanaja.

“MAKNA had been an inspiration to me. MAKNA has allowed me to share my knowledge and experience with others and give care to cancer patients and their families - in which I find comfort in doing so”, said Mr. Jacob.

There are countless people out there who are in dire need of help. Reach out and extend your hands to them, you never know how a simple gesture may completely change a person life.

Like Mr. Jacob, there is so much that we can do – touch the lives of the needy.

Lending A Hand In The Community

In August, we lost 2 of our dear friends to cancer; Tan Jee Yen (43 years old) & Teh Ai Chew (52 years old). They were both battling Breast Cancer. Jee Yen’s cancer had spread to her bone and lungs.

Both of them were strong fighters, we shared our ups & downs together with other members of the Taiping Cancer Support Group. We are made up of survivors, members of their families & the medical team of Hospital Taiping. Taiping Hospital generously hosts our Support Group every 2nd Tuesday of the month.

The Cancer Support Group organises daily Chi Kung sessions at Lake Gardens lead by volunteer survivor, Ms. Lim Sow Eng (Breast Cancer) after which we enjoy “yum cha” over breakfast at Kedai Kopi Prima, Jalan Kota Taiping. Weekly, we move to the beat and rhythm while indulging in ChaCha sessions lead by Mr. Tang Bak Hiang (multiple cancer survivor i.e. colon, lung and stomach). We

meet at Ms. Lim Sow Eng’s house monthly when counselling is required and always remind ourselves to have some fun too. As and when a new case is detected, especially when it is a depressed new comer, we dash ourselves there for moral support. We work closely with the Taiping Palliative Care Group (headed by Dr Ong and assisted by S/N Veronica Liew) and take patients for hospital appointments should it be required.

When Tan Jee Yen & Teh Ai Chew passed away, their respective families received RM5,000 and RM1,000 for funeral expenses respectively. Being exposed to some beneficial insurance policy which gives a reasonable sum for a minimum of RM30 a year, we collectively decided to subscribe to it.

Tan Jee Yen was a single mother and has an only son who is currently taking his SPM and lives with his maternal grandmother who has exhausted her savings during Jee Yen’s last days. Tan Jee Yen’s mother was so relieved with the assistance received which will benefit her grandson’s studies. Teh Ai Chew has a family of 3 children with the oldest being a son who is now in University, 2nd a daughter doing her STPM and the youngest girl is in form 1. Her husband works in a sundry shop at Padang Rengas.

14 hb September 2012 merupakan tarikh yang dinanti-nantikan oleh 39 orang wira kanser dan sukarelawan yang menyertai Program lawatan Tautan Kasih Sukarelawan Negeri Perlis ke Kelantan dan Terengganu.

Tujuan program ini adalah untuk menghargai penat lelah sukarelawan dalam kerja-kerja mengumpul dana dan membantu pesakit-pesakit, di samping menjalin hubungan silatulrahim di antara pesakit dan sukarelawan bagi Negeri Perlis, Kelantan dan Terengganu.

Program ini juga dilihat dapat mendedahkan kepada pesakit dan sukarelawan bahawa masih ada insan

yang perihatin terhadap mereka dan sentiasa menghulurkan tangan untuk membantu dan menyokong setiap aktiviti-aktiviti yang di rancang.

Pesakit di kalangan kanak-kanaklah yang begitu teruja apabila di bawa menaiki cruise menyusuri sungai untuk melihat keindahan dan replika masjid-masjid di sana.

Sinar kegembiraan jelas terbayang di wajah-wajah kecil yang selama ini murung menjalani berbagai rawatan bagi melawan kanser yang di hidapi. Ketabahan mereka langsung tidak menunjukan kesakitan yang mereka tanggung secara fizikal.

Program selama 3 hari 2 malam ini, banyak memberi manfaat kepada mereka yang begitu bahagia, apabila dapat bersama-sama teman senasib dan dapat berkongsi pengalaman dan meluahkan perasaan sesama mereka sebagai satu keluarga. Secara tidak langsung dapat meringankan keperitan yang pernah mereka lalui sebelum ini.

Program sebegini tidak mungkin menjadi kenyataan tanpa sokongan dari MAKNA. Sekalung penghargaan dan terima kasih yang tidak terhingga dari semua pesakit dan sukarelawan Negeri Perlis buat MAKNA yang telah meluluskan aktiviti ini dibawah pengawasan saya Pn. CANCER DAY 2013 We, at MAKNA take the helm of eradicating cancer myths on a daily basis and to continuously raise awareness of cancer and how to prevent, detect or treat the disease, beyond the annual observance of the World Cancer Day on 4th February every year. This year’s topic of interest revolved around debunking the four most common myths of cancer namely:

1. Cancer is just a health issue Truth: Contrary to the common belief, it is not just a health issue, because it has wide spectrum of social, economic, development, and human right implications. This probably holds true more so for developing countries.

2. Cancer is a disease of the wealthy, elderly and of developed countries Truth: Cancer is almost a global epidemic, occurs in all age groups and people of all economic strata without discrimination.

3. Cancer is a death sentence Truth: That cancer is a death sentence, no longer holds true. Many cancers are curable even if they spread to distant parts of the body from their site of origin and most cancers are also curable if detected early.

4. Cancer is our fate Truth: Causes and risk factors of many cancers are now known. About 35% of cancers are related to smoking, alcohol and unregulated life style. Therefore, emphasis should be put on prevention of cancer by avoiding risk factors and regular screenings.

As mentioned, cancer is a huge burden not only on individual health but it also carries with is far reaching family, social, national and global implications. More attention should be put on prevention of cancer. The first step in the area of prevention can be achieved largely by adopting four simple measures - Cessation of smoking or consuming tobacco in any form, a healthy diet and regular exercise, reducing or completely avoiding intake of alcohol and protection against infections causing cancer.

Immunotherapy - A New Hope?

However, such tumour-specific antigens have been hard to find, and so many of the immune agents now in use do target healthy cells as well.

Results in the last couple of years have excited cancer specialists. But the timing could hardly be worse.

Most of us know someone who has had to cope with a diagnosis of cancer, with the treatment, and then with the worry that it might return. In recent years, treatments have made real improvements, but often it is still a matter of prolonging life by just a few months.

Now, at last, some scientists are daring to hope that one approach might lead us to our best hope of a cure.

Traditionally cancers are treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy In the last two years, attention has turned to a form of cancer treatment called immunotherapy. This aims to turn the power of our own immune systems against tumours.

Until recently, immunotherapy has been a poor relation to more traditional approaches, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Most cancer patients are treated with some combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Radiation and chemotherapy have the disadvantage of destroying healthy as well as malignant cells and thus can cause severe side-effects. What is needed are more precisely-targeted therapies.

One long-held dream is that the specificity of immune mechanisms could be harnessed against tumour cells. Ideally, these agents would be targeted to molecules expressed on the cancer cells but not on healthy cells.

Positive results have begun to come in just as the world’s financial systems started to wobble, and the usual sources of money have become less easy to find.

Venture capitalists, charities and governments not only have less money to spend, but they are less prepared to spend it on “risky” bets - including unproven cancer therapies.

The problem is, not only is it increasingly hard to find money to pay for such research, but also to find the money and the partners to make sure it gets out in to small and large scale trials in patients, and beyond into the commercial world as treatments.

Britain’s largest cancer charity has found it so hard to secure money and partners that it has set up its own cancer investment fund. In Malaysia, MAKNA is lucky to have the support of so many kind-hearted donors but it is not going to rest on its laurels but continuously seek new growth areas to support new studies and battlefronts in the war against cancer.

One of the major problems facing cancer treatment today is that patients develop resistance to even the best in cancer drugs.

They need a new weapon, and many scientists believe that harnessing the power of our immune systems is their best hope.

Ain Society:

A Visit from Singapore

On the 26th of February, MAKNA welcomed to its office Ain Society; an NGO based in Singapore and works in the field of volunteering and focuses its services to support the disadvantaged. Ain Society was founded in the year 2000 in the northern part of Singapore by 12 veteran activists.

The Society hopes that individuals can continue to contribute to the community and provide value-added services to the Malay residents in the northern part of Singapore.

It hopes to also fulfill the service gaps, as many of the social services agencies that cater to the Malay community were often in the eastern region of Singapore.

Present during the meeting were the CEO of Ain Society Haji Md Yusof Ismail, Director of Projects Ms. Saemah Ali, and Executive Officer Ms. Noorsyafiaton Sharun. The meeting started by covering an orientation of both NGOs core services and thereafter transcendent to an exchange of ideas that would possibly be beneficial to both counterparts and their respective communities.

Recently MAKNA has appointed a new Branch Manager to be in charge of our projects and activities in Singapore, the collaboration with Ain Society has been propelled to be of utmost importance, and future meetings would define the exact agenda of the partnership.

Majlis Menandatangani Memorandum Persefahaman Antara Yayasan FELDA dan MAKNA

Alhamdulillah, dengan izin-Nya Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA) telah pun genap mencapai usia 19 tahun semenjak penubuhannya.

Sepanjang 19 tahun penglibatan MAKNA dalam usaha memerangi kanser, pelbagai kaedah, strategi dan perancangan telah diusahakan di dalam memberi kesedaran kepada masyarakat tentang penyakit kanser, di samping pelbagai aktiviti pengumpulan dana bagi membantu pesakit kanser yang miskin dan tidak berkemampuan.

Sejak tahun 1994 hingga kini, MAKNA telah membelanjakan hampir RM197 juta dalam usaha memerangi penyakit kanser dan juga membantu pesakit-pesakit kanser yang miskin di Malaysia. Hampir 300,000 kes-kes kanser telah dirujuk dan mendapat manfaat sepenuhnya dari MAKNA. Kes-kes

tersebut dirujuk daripada 88 hospital-hospital kerajaan diseluruh Malaysia.

Adalah menjadi hasrat MAKNA untuk bergandingan dengan badan kerajaan di dalam memberi kesedaran tentang bahayanya penyakit kanser dan seterusnya dapat meminimakan kadar penyakit kanser di kalangan kaum wanita yang semakin hari semakin tinggi jumlahnya. Sehubungan dengan itu MAKNA telah mengadakan satu program yang memberi perkhidmatan kepada seluruh rakyat Malaysia yang berisiko tinggi terutamanya wanita di kawasan luar bandar.

Program Saringan Bergerak Kanser Payudara MAKNA merupakan satu program yang menggabungkan elemen kempen saringan kanser untuk kaum wanita yang berusia 40 tahun ke atas melalui kaedah

mamografi dan juga kempen kesedaran kanser payudara. Kempen ini dijalankan dengan menggunakan treler yang dilengkapi dengan mesin mamogram bersama tenaga kerja professional. Program seumpama ini merupakan satu-satunya program yang terdapat di Malaysia. Terima kasih di ucapkan kepada penaja utama kami iaitu MNRB Holdings Berhad dan Yayasan Tenaga Nasional yang telah menyumbangkan sebanyak RM1.6 juta bagi merealisasikan program ini.

Setelah mendapat kelulusan sepenuhnya daripada Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, program ini telah mula beroperasi sepenuhnya pada tahun 2011. Setakat ini 24 lokasi telah dijelajahi di Semenanjung Malaysia termasuklah Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Pahang, Perlis dan Kuala Lumpur. Sebanyak 2,166 peserta wanita telah melakukan ujian mammogram manakala 2,947 peserta lagi telah menjalani pemeriksaan klinikal. Setiap program ujian saringan yang dirancang akan dilaksanakan sepanjang 3 hingga 4 hari di setiap lokasi.

Ujian saringan kanser payudara ini diberikan secara percuma kepada wanita yang mempunyai pendapatan isirumah kurang daripada RM3,500.00 sebulan.

Keutamaan bagi menjalani ujian kanser payudara ini akan diberikan kepada golongan yang berisiko tinggi dan mempunyai sejarah keluarga yang menghidap kanser. Bagi wanita yang mempunyai pendapatan isirumah yang lebih daripada RM3,500.00 sebulan, bayaran sebanyak RM150 akan dikenakan. Manakala golongan wanita

yang berusia di bawah umur 40 tahun, ujian pemeriksaan klinikal akan diberikan oleh jururawat terlatih MAKNA. Golongan lelaki juga tidak ketinggalan, boleh juga menjalani pemeriksaan klinikal tersebut.

Jutaan terima kasih di atas sumbangan pihak Yayasan FELDA untuk menaja 24 program di lokasi-lokasi terpilih FELDA bagi tahun 2013. Program Saringan Bergerak Kanser Payudara ini akan dimulai di Ibu Pejabat FELDA, Jalan Semarak diikuti di Pendang, Kedah dan seterusnya akan menjelajah keserata kawasan FELDA di Semenanjung Malaysia.

Sehubungan dengan itu MAKNA ingin merakamkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan kepada Yayasan FELDA dan semua pihak yang terlibat terutamanya ahli jawatankuasa yang telah bertungkus lumus bagi menjayakan Majlis Memorandum Persefahaman (MOU), diantara YAYASAN FELDA dan MAKNA. Semoga dengan termeterainya kerjasama ini, seluruh warga FELDA akan mendapat manfaat sewajarnya disamping dapat meningkatkan lagi kesedaran tentang bahaya penyakit kanser kepada seluruh rakyat Malaysia secara amnya.

Visit OLEH: NOORLIAMERA BT JOHAR, PELAJAR PRAKTIKAL (NOVEMBER 2011-MAC 2012)

Pada tanggal 22 Februari 2012, pertama kali saya sebagai seorang pelajar praktikal melawat seorang pesakit kanser bersamasama dua orang Home Visit Team dan seorang dari International Division. Sebagai orang baru, tidak ada apa yang saya dapat jangkakan pada kali pertama melawat pesakit kanser.

Pesakit bernama Asiah Binti Hussain, berumur 48 tahun merupakan seorang suri rumah sepenuh masa. Tinggal di kawasan Semenyih, Selangor dan pencarian agak menyukarkan kerana kami gagal menghubungi pesakit kerana beliau sudah menukar nombor telefon. Alhamdulillah, kami berjaya mencari rumah pesakit berdasarkan alamat yang diberikan. Beliau disahkan menghidap barah payudara pada tahun 2009 oleh doktor yang memeriksa beliau.

Pertama kali bertemu, beliau menghadiahkan senyuman kepada kami dan kami tidak menyangka beliau adalah pesakit kanser yang kami cari kerana dari riak wajah beliau tidak menunjukkan bahawa beliau menderita penyakit yang paling digeruni oleh kaum hawa pada masa kini.

Tinggal di rumah flat yang serba sederhana, sudah cukup bagi beliau serta anak-beranak. Membuka cerita bagaimana beliau di sahkan menghidap barah payudara (kiri), beliau menceritakan titik-titik perubahan pada diri beliau. Puan Asiah terasa ada benjolan kecil yang timbul pada payudara sebelah kiri dan di bahagian ketiak semasa

beliau sedang mandi. Hal ini menyebabkan Puan Asiah berasa tidak selesa dan telah berjumpa dengan doktor untuk pemeriksaan yang lebih lanjut. Melalui pemeriksaan yang dijalankan, doktor mengesahkan bahawa beliau menghidap barah payudara.

Bagai terhenti masa berputar, Puan Asiah menerima segala takdir dengan hati yang redha. Beliau menerima rawatan sebagai pesakit kanser di Hospital Kajang, Selangor. Melalui pembedahan, beliau telah membuang benjolan yang berada di sebelah kiri payudaranya. Puan Asiah juga menjalani rawatan radioterapi sebanyak 21 kali dan juga kemoterapi.

Ujian datang bertandang lagi apabila suami yang diharap dapat memberikan sokongan kepada keluarga menghancurkan harapan Puan Asiah sekeluarga. Suami beliau mengahwini perempuan lain dalam masa dirinya memerlukan seseorang untuk menjaga dan memberi harapan kepada Puan Asiah dan anak-anak. Dengan berbekalkan semangat yang ada pada anak-anak, Puan Asiah meneruskan kehidupan demi tiga orang anak yang disayangi. Mengambil upah sebagai pengasuh dengan menjaga anak jiran, Puan Asiah menyara diri serta anak-anak yang masih bersekolah. Melalui pendapatan sebanyak RM500 sebulan, beliau menampung perbelanjaan sekolah anak-anak sedangkan suami beliau tidak mengambil tahu tentang mereka.

LIFE GOES ON pihak hospital, Puan Asiah telah memohon sumbangan kepada MAKNA melalui Jabatan Kerja Sosial Perubatan. Dengan bantuan serba sedikit dari MAKNA, Puan Asiah dapat menampung perbelanjaan keluarga. Puan Asiah merasakan ada sinar dari bantuan yang diberikan kepada mereka sekeluarga.

Melalui pengalaman ini juga, saya menasihati orang ramai di luar sana agar menghargai anugerah kesihatan yang bernilai ini. Kita tidak dapat menjangka apa yang akan berlaku akan datang. Mungkinkah kita pesakit kanser yang seterusnya atau ahli keluarga kita. Selain itu, kita perlulah menghargai orang yang berada di sekeliling

kita. Janganlah kita mensia-siakan kehidupan mereka yang memerlukan kita pada saat mereka memerlukan sokongan yang padu dari kita untuk melawan penyakit yang berbahaya seperti kanser ini.

Pengalaman ini membuatkan saya bersyukur kerana diberi peluang untuk samasama merasai, melihat dan mendengar segala rintihan pesakit kanser seperti Puan Asiah. Bekerja bersama MAKNA telah memberi saya seribu satu pengalaman yang mungkin tidak dapat dirasai oleh orang lain.

Tiada pengalaman yang menarik selain dari belajar dari pengalaman sendiri dan orang lain.

LAPORAN PESAKIT Kami melakukan lawatan ke rumah pesakit yang bernama K. Manimaran A/L V. Karuppiah pada 23 Jun 2012 pada jam 11.55 a.m. Kami di sambut mesra oleh isteri pesakit dan mempelawa kami ke rumah beliau. Sewaktu kami tiba di rumah pesakit, beliau baru pulang dari kedai berdekatan dengan rumahnya.

Pesakit berusia 46 tahun, berbangsa india. Beliau di diagnoskan kanser usus. Keadaan pesakit stabil dan sihat ketika lawatan kami ke rumah. Pesakit telah menjalani pembedahan pada Januari 2011.

Pesakit juga telah melengkapkan chemotherapy (mayo’s regime) dengan 6 kitaran di HKL pada tahun lepas dibawah pemerhatian Dr.Zabedah. Pesakit meneruskan rawatan susulan di Hospital Serdang dan akan melakukan CT scan pada 18.9.2012. Beliau tinggal bersama isteri, ibu, dan ayah beliau. Beliau tidak bekerja, hanya mengharapkan pendapatan daripada isteri beliau

yang hanya mengambil upah mengasuh anak saudaranya manakala ayah beliau mengalami lumpuh dan tidak sihat sepenuhnya. Perbelanjaan seisi rumah sebanyak RM800-RM1000 sebulan. Beliau tidak menerima sebarang bantuan daripada mana-mana badan kebajikan yang lain. Pesakit hanya menerima bantuan daripada MAKNA sebanyak RM150 sebulan bermula dari Januari 2012 sehingga sekarang.
