Dear Friends, As we approach the end of 2013, there may be certain things you wish you had accomplished earlier in the year. They may range from fulfilling a lifelong dream to travel somewhere or to reconnect with a personal friend or relative from years ago, to having simpler meaningful experiences, such as rereading a favorite book or spending time with people who are important to you.

I say, take the time. Do not count the days but count your memories. Years will come and go but worthwhile memories takes effort.

Find peace in important relationships and say the things that matter most. This may involve making apologies, seeking resolution to conflicts, and telling family members how much you love them. If you are unable to communicate these messages in person, consider sending them in writing, by telephone, or through a family member.

However, keep in mind that, despite your best efforts, people may not respond the way you want.

Consider taking time to reflect on and celebrate the events in your life—the things you have accomplished, the people you have loved, and the individuals and events that have shaped you. This may be a good time to talk with your family and friends about the events and special times you have spent together. Create new wonderful memories to cherish.

Your strength, time and support can become heirlooms, gifts to people who sorely need help. My advice is to take a step back from your hectic schedule. Appreciate the life the God gave you and look around you, see those who are less fortunate, those who are suffering and I urge you, step out and lend a hand.

To all who help, my heartfelt gratitude and sincere thank you. You make the world a better place.

Pink October 2013 “Think Pink, Dress Pink and Feel Pink”

This year, for Pink October, our donors and supporters were invited to join in our “Think Pink, Dress Pink and Feel Pink” campaign where they were asked to dress up in something pink and take pictures of themselves. The pictures would then be shared with public via MAKNA’s facebook page.

When the submissions came in, we were overwhelmed! The response was beyond our expectations. We are pleased with the show of support towards the event.

Alamanda Putrajaya Shopping Centre, together with MAKNA and Health Ministry spread the message of hope and spirit of fighting breast cancer through the Pink October campaign held for several weeks in October 2013.

During the campaign, various activities were held at Alamanda to increase awareness about breast cancer.

“Through the campaign, we empowered women with information on breast cancer as well as the courage to fight if diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Alamanda Public Relations and Communications Manager, Fartini Zaharuddin.

“They had the opportunity to seek more information on breast cancer as well as consult experts if they wished to find out even more. We invited breast cancer survivors to share their stories and hoped that this would inspire all women to never give up despite the circumstances,” said Fartini.

Throughout the campaign, talks and breast selfexamination demonstrations were held. There were also sharing moments with breast cancer survivors where visitors were able to meet and chat with them.

These activities aimed to create a better understanding about breast cancer among women as well as to teach them how to take control of the situation and be a fighter should a loved one or they themselves are diagnosed with it.

Besides that, visitors also enjoyed the ‘Pink Fashion Show’ where participating tenants showcased their latest collection to inspire all women to stay fashionably beautiful at all times.

Alamanda also rewarded the first 30 Fashion VIP members who attended the ‘Pink Fashion Show’ each day with a mystery gift.

Softlan Shows Why Caring Counts

Pink October is the month dedicated to Breast Cancer worldwide and it is a time where creating and increasing awareness of cancer takes precedence.

During this period, individuals and organisations will put their hands together to raise funds to help breast cancer patients and organise activities that emphasise the aspects of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and emotional support.

In 2013, for the fifth consecutive year, ColgatePalmolive continued with the initiative to organise a charity campaign for breast cancer called Softlan, Because Caring Counts with the theme, “A Touch of Love. A Touch of Life”. Three charity partners were selected as the beneficiaries of the fund raising event.

The public were also able to pledge their support online by Tweeting the campaign message on Twitter with #SoftlanBCC or pinning the breast selfexamination technique on Pinterest.

On the 4th of October, the campaign was launched at Giant Supermarket, Summit USJ and ran for 2 months.

In his speech, General Manager, Colgate-Palmolive Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, Mr. John Hazlin said, “Women are an integral part of the Malaysian community and have always been so. Their contribution to the workforce, the arts and sciences, the family unit and the education of the children of tomorrow knows no boundaries and we need to be there for them. Through Softlan’s breast cancer charity campaign, we hope to convey to the public just how important it is to care and be present for the women in your life who are going through breast 8

During the campaign period, customers were able to make pledges to the project by simply purchasing selected Softlan products.To help encourage pledges, the public were also able to make them through Softlan’s Facebook page (www.facebook. com/SoftlanBCC).

MAKNA Senior Manager Mr. Yusof Mohamed Aris said, “MAKNA is currently planning to expand its mobile mammogram screening unit services and with projects such as the Softlan’s Because Caring Counts, the public’s perception and understanding of breast cancer would be increased especially on the part of early detection. Every sen contributed by the campaign to MAKNA is a building block to reach people who are in dire need of support.”

At the end of the campaign, a total of RM32,000 was channelled to MAKNA. Our kudos and deep appreciation to Colgate-Palmolive’s contribution and on the success of the campaign. We also thank them for taking the initiative to keep educating the masses about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

Awareness Gets

Breast Cancer A Boost from Wacoal Malaysia Wacoal Malaysia launched its Pink Ribbon Campaign 2013 on 10 October, 2013 to promote breast cancer awareness at New Straits Times Press headquarters in Jalan Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. The company teamed up with MAKNA and New Straits Times Press (NSTP), with the latter as the campaign’s official media partner.

Also the title owner of Miss Body Beautiful, Melinder was on stage to share her knowledge on breast cancer prevention and on how to lead a healthy lifestyle with the enthusiastic NSTP staff.

Wacoal Malaysia has been promoting the Pink Ribbon Campaign through various channels all over the country since its incorporation in Malaysia in 2003.

In conjunction with the launch, an exhibition was held at the same venue. Apart from fun activities and special Pink Ribbon giveaways, Wacoal’s experienced beauty advisors helped to facilitate the imparting of knowledge on breast self examination and advised on brassiere fitting.

“Breast cancer has a relatively higher chance of cure if detected early. There is no better way to generate and maximise breast cancer awareness than through our friends in the media,” said Mr. Takashi Watanabe, Wacoal Malaysia Executive Director during his welcome address. “Strategic collaboration between NSTP and Wacoal enables us to spread the awareness further and wider,” added Mr. Watanabe, before officiating the launch jointly with NST Deputy Group Editor, En. Abd Rashid Yusof. Others present at the launch included Wacoal Malaysia Director/General Manager, Mr. Vincent Leong, and MAKNA Deputy General Manager, Mr. Vemanna Appannah.

MAKNA’s mobile mammogram trailer was on-site to provide mammogram service, with compliments of Wacoal Malaysia. Information on Remamma, Wacoal Malaysia’s unique prostheses and special brassieres, dedicated to assist post breast cancer operative women was also made available.

As part of its 2013 Pink Ribbon initiatives, proceeds generated from Wacoal Malaysia’s nationwide Pink Ribbon donation drive in the month of October were channelled towards MAKNA’s mobile mammogram programme to benefit Malaysian women.

As Malaysia approached its 56th anniversary of independence in August 2013, Zubedy Ideahouse, an oganisation that focuses on social causes invited MAKNA to participate in a campaign called #SaySomethingNice.

This campaign sought to enable Malaysians individually or in groups to come forward and share positive messages and thoughts on the special day. A country like Malaysia with its ethnic and religious diversity is only as strong and stable as the understanding and respect her citizens have for each other’s differences, without which would result in constant friction and disharmony among its citizens.

Through #SaySomethingNice, MAKNA had the opportunity to #ShareSomethingNice with the public through a cancer awareness talk given by MAKNA Facilitator Cik Habiba Abdul Rahman. The event 10

was held at Tropicana City Mall, one of two locations where the campaign ran. A cancer survivor and volunteer with MAKNA, Azlina Yakob also shared her life experiences battling cancer. Her strong will to survive the disease was the factor she was fortunate to be around to see her children grow up.

She also shared how MAKNA’s help throughout her cancer battle also contributed to her positive attitude and survival.

This campaign was supported by many organisations, some of which developed their own creative slogans such as #DoSomethingNice, #WriteSomethingNice and so on. MAKNA’s #ShareSomethingNice project touched many hearts who listened to Azlina’s story.

“One Walk for Charity” ,

Helping Cancer Patients the Technip Way

One Walk for Charity, held for the first time

by Technip was aimed at raising funds for children with cancer who are assisted by MAKNA.

It allows us to unite and stand as one in our community to help those afflicted with cancer.

The journey to end cancer can’t be done alone, it needs the participation and contribution of every member of the society. Every ringgit raised through this campaign will give much needed relief to poor cancer patients. It is a sheer joy to see Technip’s staff and families weaving together a community activity that promotes healthy lifestyle. The effort is very commendable.”

One Walk for Charity was filled with loads of fun and educational experience for all. After the run ended, participants were given a chance to take part in the HSE awareness exhibitions. Some of the other activities that kept the crowd happy and entertained for the rest of the day were Kids Road The event took place on 26 October 2013 at Tanjung 1 & Safety Campaign, Health Check, Kids Nutrition 2, Taman Tasik Titiwangsa from 7.00 am till 2.30 pm and games, Kids Fire Safety, Drawing & Colouring was participated by 2,000 people comprising Technip contest. staff, families, clients and the public.

This 4.5 km charity walk was also held in conjunction with the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) awareness day.

DINE, DONATE AND BE DELIGHTED! Malarum Ninaivugal in Aid of MAKNA The Grand GEM Restaurant organised a two-day concert themed “Malarum Ninaivugal” (Memories That’ll Blossom) from 15 to 16 November 2013 and raised RM 15,000 for MAKNA to help underprivileged cancer patients in Malaysia.

The live musical concert was held at their flagship outlet, The Grand GEM Restaurant, Grand Bluewave Hotel in Johor Bahru. The event featured veteran local artistes belting out hit songs popularised by Tamil

movies in the cinemas right from the 70’s till present day.

This event marks the first CSR project for The Grand GEM restaurant chain. With a total of 5 restaurants, 4 of which are in the Klang Valley, Executive Director Mr. Prabhagar Segadevan had wanted to do something to help the local communities and settled on helping MAKNA after receiving a recommendation from MK (Mr Muthu Kumar the latter is a popular local musician/singer who had worked with the non-profit on another project, “Jom Botak” earlier this year.)

A host of talented local artistes showcasing their artistry and talent in the concert included MK, Datin Seri Manimala, Bob Nathan, along with Chaarumathe on vocals and musicians, Sivam on drums, Santosh on percussions, Sree on bass guitar

FUNDRAISING and Vicky on keyboard, all of whom are well known in the local music circuit, excited at the prospect they were able to play their part and contribute towards the fight against cancer.

Mr. Prabhagar said, “To coincide with the message of healthy living, which is also the reason for the tie up with MAKNA, concert attendees were served with a special array of sumptuous dishes, prepared with Indian spices that are traditionally recognised for their natural healing properties.”

“We thought out the menu and took extra care to combine what’s healthy without sacrificing good taste. This event carried our pledge of wanting to be more socially aware and to give back to cancer patients who are financially challenged.

We wanted an event that was fun yet had its relevance, and what better way than to infuse Indian food, which is known to be rich in natural antioxidants with soulful music,” he continued.

“There’s more good news. Our management has decided to continue contributing to needy cancer patients via MAKNA by allocating RM1 on every receipt issued at our Johor Bahru outlet for one year, starting next January.” Right now, all outlets of the restaurant group carry a MAKNA donation box at their reception counters.

MAKNA Deputy General Manager, Mr. Vemanna Appannah said, “Melodies That’ll Blossom was a crossover into time where sweet melodies

of the old and new were brought to life, thanks to this wonderful bunch of endearing musicians who are seasoned professionals in the industry. The relaxed ambiance with the melodic and soothing music was served along a variety of healthy food, forming an enchanting combination.”

“When a person has cancer, he or she experiences a traumatic time, and without support, sometimes they can succumb to the disease. The fundraising dinner and musical night just struck the right cord in delivering our special message, that a single note alone may only do so much, but as a collective effort, it is powerful. I personally have seen cancer patients seeking solace and comfort in music, and I truly regard music a natural healer,” he added.

Breast Cancer is a disease that most are aware about but many have no idea what Paget’s disease is and how it relates to breast cancer.

There’s various information given, demonstrated, created on breast cancer for public to be aware on but not many are focused on this silent killer that can completely change our lives. Keep reading to know how this disease can become fatal if symptoms are not known and medical help is not sought.

Paget’s disease is known as a rare type of breast cancer involving the skin of the nipple. Usually, the darker circle of skin around it, which is called the areola. Most people with Paget’s disease have one or more tumors inside the same breast. These breast tumours are either ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive breast cancer This disease is named after Sir James Paget.

He reported on the link between changes in the nipple and the underlying breast cancer.

Although Paget believed the affected cells were not cancerous, it was later proved that the cells themselves were malignant, in addition to signifying underlying breast cancer. Since the condition is often mild and limited to a surface

appearance, it is sometimes dismissed, despite the fact that it is indicative of breast cancer that may prove fatal if left untreated.

Paget’s disease occurs in about 1–2 out of every 100 women with breast cancer. It usually occurs in women in their 50s, but can occur at an earlier or later age. It can affect men too but this is extremely rare. Most cases are found in menopausal women, but can also appear in women who are as young as 20. The average age at diagnosis is 62 for women and 69 for men. The disease is rare among both women and men.

More than 95 percent of people with Paget’s disease of the nipple also have underlying breast cancer; however, Paget’s disease of the nipple accounts for less than 5 percent of all breast cancers.

COVER STORY What are the symptoms of Paget’s disease Common drowsiness with dilated pupils may be a sign for this disease. On average, a woman may experience signs and symptoms for six to eight months before a diagnosis is made.

Paget’s disease’s symptoms may vary based on the stage of the disease. The first sign is usually an eczemalike rash, usually only affecting one nipple. The skin of the nipple and areola may be red, itchy and inflamed.

Some women may experience a burning sensation.

Fluid discharge may leak from the abnormal area of cells. The nipple may turn inwards. There may or may not be a lump in the breast, and there may be redness, oozing and crusting, and a sore that does not heal.

The symptoms usually affect the nipple and then spread to the areola and then the breast. It is common that the symptoms disappear for a while and this may be tricky as the patient takes it as a sign that the disease has cured, which is not true.

When to see a doctor Check your nipple and areola on both breasts on a regular basis, such as during breast self-exams. If you feel a lump, or if you experience itching or skin irritation that persists for more than a month, see your doctor.

If you’re being treated for a skin injury on your breast, and the condition doesn’t go away with treatment, make a follow-up appointment with your doctor. You may need a biopsy — a procedure that collects a small tissue sample for microscopic analysis — to evaluate the affected area.

COVER STORY Risk factors Risk factors that affect your likelihood of developing Paget’s disease of the breast are the same factors that affect your risk of developing any other type of breast cancer.

• Some factors that make you more susceptible to breast cancer include: • • Age. Your chances of developing breast cancer increase as you get older.

• A personal history of breast cancer. If you’ve had breast cancer in one breast, you have an increased risk of developing cancer in the other breast.

• A personal history of breast abnormalities. If you’ve had lobular carcinoma in situ or atypi calhyperplasia, your risk of developing breast cancer is higher. Certain benign breast conditions also are associated with a slightly increased risk.

• Family history. If you have a mother, sister or daughter with breast or ovarian cancer or both, or even a father or brother with breast cancer, you have a greater chance of developing breast cancer.

• Genetic predisposition. Defects in one of several genes, especially BRCA1 or BRCA2, put

you at greater risk of developing breast cancer as well as ovarian and other cancers. Such defects account for fewer than 1 out of 10 breast cancers.

Dense breast tissue. Women with dense breast tissue, as seen on a mammogram, face a higher risk of breast cancer.

Radiation exposure. If you received radiation treatments to your chest as a child or young adult to treat another cancer, you’re more likely to develop breast cancer later in life.

Excess weight. Weighing more than is healthy for your age and height increases your risk of breast cancer — especially after menopause and if you gained weight as an adult.

Hormone replacement. Taking estrogen after menopause increases the risk of breast cancer for some women.

Having one or more risk factors doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll develop breast cancer. Most women with breast cancer have no known risk factors.

Causes of Paget’s disease Paget’s disease is usually a sign of breast cancer in tissue behind the nipple, or other parts of the breast away from the nipple. The breast cancer can either be where cancerous cells invade the surrounding breast tissue.

It can also be in situ where the cancerous cells are contained in one or more areas of the breast and are unable to spread In most cases in Paget’s disease, a lump is detected in the breast.About 9 out of 10 people with a lump will have invasive breast cancer.

Of those who do not have a lump, 4 out of 10 people will have invasive breast cancer, and the rest will have in situ breast cancer.

COVER STORY Preventing Paget’s disease Modifying certain lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, may reduce your risk of developing certain types of cancer, including breast cancer.

Screening is also used to help identify women who may have an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Treating Paget’s disease Treating Paget’s disease is the same way as breast cancer. Surgery is usually the first line treatment but unlike other forms of breast cancer, it involves removing breast tissue that includes the nipple and areola. This may be followed by a combination of chemotheraphy, radiotherapy and biological or hormone therapy.

If Paget’s disease is detected and treated in its early stages, there is a good chance of recovery.

Diagnosing Paget’s disease In any scenarios when a person feels abnormal about their breast regardless of the shape or discoloration or even any constant irritation, you should consult with a doctor for treatments.

Paget’s disease can be confused with other skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis, as they can look very similar. This can make Paget’s disease difficult to diagnose. Several tests may be carried out to diagnose Paget’s disease of the breast.

The tests are mammogram, ultrasound scan, biopsy and imprint or scare cytology.

As Paget’s disease is a form of breast cancer, the sooner it is diagnosed, the better the outcome is likely to be. Visit your nearest clinic if you develop a lump in your breast. While most breast lumps are not cancerous, it is important you have it checked out.

Puan Zuraida Binti Ahyat (Kanser Payudara Kanan) 47 tahun Saya Zuraida Ahyat. Nekad untuk menjadi sukarelawan lahir dalam sanubari selepas saya sihat dan tamat rawatan kimoterapi di Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail, Batu Pahat 3 tahun yang lalu. Saya terus berhenti bekerja kerana ingin bersama keluarga tersayang sambil membuat kerja-kerja amal dan kebajikan.

Sebagai seorang ‘survivor’ saya sering mengikuti program anjuran MAKNA. Hasil daripada sistem “coaching” ketua sukarelawan MAKNA, Mama Gie bersama rakan-rakan sukarelawan lain, saya dipanggil untuk menjaga seorang rakan akrab yang juga sukarelawan MAKNA yang terpaksa menjalani pembedahan payudara kiri. Rakan ini adalah pesakit kanser payudara sebelah kanan yang kansernya kemudian merebak ke payudara kiri, tulang dan kulit. Meskipun kanser rakan ini berada di tahap akhir, ketabahan, keceriaan dan keaktifannya menjadi inspirasi kepada mereka yang mengenalinya.

Selain itu, saya pernah memberi sokongan kepada seorang pelajar tingkatan 4 yang ada ketumbuhan di payudara kiri. Saya berjumpa dengannya semasa kami mengadakan ceramah di sekolahnya. Dari menghantar ke hospital untuk pemeriksaan, hingga membuat pembedahan kecil untuk mengeluarkan ketumbuhan yang “benign”, saya tetap bersama pelajar itu, memberi dorongan dan semangat. Alhamdulillah, pelajar itu kini sihat dan ceria.

Sebagai wira kanser, saya berpuas hati dapat melakukan sesuatu yang boleh dijadikan ingatan manis dalam kehidupan saya. Selagi saya sihat dan apabila ada kelapangan waktu, saya akan sentiasa bersama ahli sukarelawan MAKNA lain yang saya rindui apabila lama tidak berjumpa dan tidak melaksanakan aktiviti bersama.

Nama saya Masliza. Daripada memikirkan perkara-perkara negatif mengenai diri sendiri sebagai pesakit kanser, adalah lebih baik untuk memenuhi masa saya dengan aktiviti yang berkualiti. Saya bertuah kerana bertemu kawan yang senasib dan kami sama-sama aktif sebagai sukarelawan MAKNA di Batu Pahat.

Saya Rabiah, seorang suri rumah dan membantu menjaga kebersihan Bazarniaga Parit Sulong, Batu Pahat, berdekatan dengan tempat tinggal saya. Walaupan saya seorang wira kanser, saya menjadi sukarelawan kanser dan sering menghadiri acara-acara MAKNA sejak 4 tahun yang lalu. Semenjak itu, saya memasang satu tekad untuk membuat sesuatu yang luar biasa dan di luar kemampuan saya.

Saya mencabar diri sendiri untuk membuat satu acara berbentuk amal yang meriah.

Atas bantuan rakan-rakan sukarelawan yang lain, impian saya menjadi kenyataan.

Hampir setiap acara MAKNA akan disertai oleh saya seperti menyumbang kraftangan yang saya buat sendiri untuk dijual untuk menjana dana untuk pesakit kanser. Secara tidak rasmi saya juga menjadi jurugambar untuk acara-acara sukarelawan. Saya gembira melakukannya kerana setiap gambar yang diambil mempunyai ceritanya sendiri.

Saya berbangga dengan diri saya kerana saya menjadi seorang wira kanser yang dapat menyumbang, tidak kira kecil atau besar kepada rakan-rakan lain yang senasib biarpun pada awalnya saya tidak mengenali mereka.

Walaupun berjumpa dalam masa yang singkat, kami berkongsi pengalaman, cara pemakanan sihat selepas rawatan dan sukaduka serta dugaan kehidupan dan yang paling penting, kami berkongsi keredhaan. Kepada wira-wira kanser di luar sana, bercerialah selalu untuk kesihatan kita.

Kami mengadakan ‘Karnival I Want’ yang bertemakan “Warga Aktif Dan Sihat” di Dataran Parit Sulong selama 2 hari 2 malam. Program ini menjadi lebih “gah” apabila Kementerian Kesihatan Daerah Batu Pahat, Majlis Daerah Yong Peng dan Pejabat Wakil Rakyat DUN Sri Medan bekerjasama menjayakan acara kesihatan ini.

Inilah pencapaian terbaik saya. Pengalaman semasa menganjurkan acara ini adalah menjadikan saya lebih matang, sabar dan tabah. Terima kasih kepada bantuan suami, anak-anak dan rakan-rakan saya, program ini berjalan dengan lancar. Saya semakin bersemangat untuk berkempen memerangi kanser dan berharap semoga pesakit-pesakit dan wira-wira kanser dapat mengambil iktibar daripada pengalaman kami. Up, Close, Untainted View of Cancer

Patients’ Lives

During my time in Malaysia I wanted to take the opportunity to learn, grow and above all do something that has a positive effect on other people’s lives. After researching different charities within Malaysia I decided to join MAKNA’s volunteer team. Having witnessed the debilitating effects of cancer within my own family, it was time that I garnered a greater understanding of this disease and MAKNA was the ideal place where I could both lend my support and learn.

I had previously volunteered with different charities and it didn’t take long for me to realise that MAKNA is unlike any other. I was surprised to learn there were volunteers virtually in every part of Malaysia. MAKNA’s volunteers, most of whom are cancer survivors themselves, are dedicated to raising funds, spreading awareness and giving emotional and physical support to cancer patients.

Within my first week at MAKNA, I was fortunate enough to meet some of these devoted volunteers.

We travelled to Johor and as it was in the month of Ramadan, I had the opportunity to experience breaking fast at MAKNA’s halfway house. There I met with cancer survivors and patients whom openly shared their stories of their times but also, and most 20

importantly, of hope. I was truly overwhelmed by the love and support that I witnessed throughout my time in Johor. In particular, one cancer survivor, Kak Latipah, and her family really warmed my heart. During a sharing session, Kak Latipah spoke of her husband and daughters continued support and how their love and strength helped her through her biggest battle. It was easy to see that the family shared a close bond and now, together, they stand as a strong volunteer unit supporting others in their time of need.

Over the following weeks, I quickly learned the enormity of the challenges that are faced by cancer patients in Malaysia. Behind the glittering lights and tall buildings in Kuala Lumpur lay such poverty. It’s truly hard to fathom this disproportionate situation.

VOLUNTEERS Of course I was always aware that there are people living in poverty in Malaysia, this unfortunately is a problem faced all over the world especially in developing countries. However, the thought never crossed my mind - if a patient lives hours away from hospital how can they afford the travel costs? To add to the problem, if rural roads are not developed then the journey to hospitals adds further distress. I was so ashamed of my ignorance. Cancer is a tremendously expensive disease to treat therefore how are families who are already struggling financially supposed to survive if they have to bear the additional costs. This, fortunately, is where MAKNA steps in; they assist in taking away the financial burden so that the patient can focus on doing what’s most important, healing.

I dreaded to think how these families who already faced such hardships in life would cope during these difficult times without the support of MAKNA. Financial struggles aside, for me the most alarming part of my experience is the lack of awareness, disease is just as important as the treatment. I was stunned to learn that a large percentage of patients in Malaysia seek treatment from traditional healers and only when the cancer has reached a critical stage do they go to hospital. It’s incredibly disturbing to hear that these healers are still so influential today.

especially in rural areas. Where I’m from, cancer is a word that we hear every day. We see it on the television, read about it in articles and it’s now a rare occurrence not to meet someone who hasn’t been affected by this crippling disease. The word is so familiar within our society that it’s hard to imagine a world without it therefore it never occurred to me that some people don’t know what cancer is.

They don’t know the early signs; they don’t know that it’s not contagious and, most importantly, they don’t know the treatments available. Education on this

Of course before receiving treatment you need to be diagnosed; this also seems to be another problem to add to the equation. Whilst visiting the Paediatric Oncology Ward in Hospital KL I met mothers that spoke of the same story. Their instincts told them that something serious was wrong with their child however they had to endure countless visits to clinics before cancer was finally diagnosed. Early detection is imperative in order to save lives. One mother informed us that her child was diagnosed with Tonsillitis. The antibiotics prescribed did nothing to ease the headaches and vomiting therefore she kept going to different clinics to get second opinion but was only prescribed with even more antibiotics.

Her son had a brain tumour. As we spoke with his mother, he laid on the hospital bed unable to talk or walk. If his cancer was detected and treated at an earlier stage would he be at home with his family instead of in hospital? We’ll never know.

Raising awareness and educating people is a vital part of MAKNA’s job. Staff and volunteers take part in awareness talks, exhibitions and outreach programmes all over the country. www.makna.org.my

VOLUNTEERS I was involved in awareness and fundraising events at Universiti Tenaga Nasional and even at a wedding.

MAKNA reach out to people far and wide and the more informed they are of cancer, its causes and symptoms, the more likely they are able to prevent and detect it.

As a volunteer at MAKNA you are given the opportunity to visit patients at home. It was this experience that really opened my eyes to the severity of hardships endured by patients. The patient I visited lived in a storeroom at a car workshop in Kuala Lumpur. I was bringing him groceries but he had no kitchen to cook in. He also had no income, no wife and his children did not support him emotionally or financially. He was living in poverty and left to face his battle with cancer alone. He is one of many others with the same fate and its cases like this that make volunteers a key factor at MAKNA. Aside from fundraising and raising awareness, volunteers can visit patients and not only give them support but also to make sure they are receiving all the help that is needed.

It’s too difficult to simply sum up the experience I have had with MAKNA. It is a journey you must experience yourself to really see the magnitude of work that they do. I do know however that I walked in with one perspective and left with another. Naively I thought that when I joined MAKNA I would perhaps have some sort of impact on someone’s life but the truth is they have had much more of an impact on mine.

As a volunteer at MAKNA you will participate in and learn many different things and I have no doubt the experience will redefine your outlook on life, as it did mine. I would like to sincerely thank MAKNA for giving me the opportunity to be part of their mission.

I especially want to thank Monica, Faizal and Mama Gie, from the volunteer office, for their guidance, wisdom and for making me part of their team. Above all I want to thank the patients and volunteers. Thank you for sharing your time and stories with me and most of all, for being such an inspiration.

Fundraising Night for Cancer The DINNER We were so invested in organising the “Work of Heart” - MAKNA Sabah Charity Fundraising Dinner which was meant to collect funds for cancer patients under “Klimb for Kancer” campaign that we lost track of the climb itself. Only when the dinner was drawing closer to the date of the climb that it dawned on us that we had paid more attention to the dinner than preparing ourselves physically for the climb. By then, the stark reality that both events were tied to each other began to manifest itself.

On the whole, the dinner went well, free of unwanted hitches. 42 tables were snapped up which was surprisingly “sweet” considering we only had less than 3 weeks to organise it.

The event was a success partly due to many charitable-hearted artistes giving themselves and their talent voluntarily. The extraordinary Sammy Mohamad Ariffin Khan with his exceptional performances made the affair memorable. By passing his hat to the enthusiastic crowd for collection, an additional RM2,000 was raised.

The night was further invigorated by the talented Daud Abdillah who impressed with his beautiful voice and tasteful piano playing. Not to be outdone, the spectacular Melinda Angus and her amazing team delivered a mind-blowing accapella rendition of popular tunes.

The performances did not disappoint, the audience responded with appreciative applauses and cheers.

Mr Peter Dick Lee had his fair share of crowd’s approval when he came on and electrified the stage. The stunning Queenera Francine Francis Kitingan (Nera) of Akademi Fantasia 9 kept the crowd exhilarated, swaying and singing along.

We were then taken to the era where big collars, bell bottoms, thick side burns, sequinned costumes were back in fashion, as seen in the styling of Chris Gomez, the famous “Elvis Presley” tribute act. This continued with the unforgettable performances by the young and talented from S.M St. Francis Convent and SK Sri Gaya. The night then went into full throttle and the crowd cheered on merrily, receiving much more than what they had bargained for.

FEATURE STORY Upon reflection, we are extremely grateful that when we called on the community to support the effort, many generous souls came forward and responded accordingly.

The CLIMB My husband and I didn’t train as much as we should have although we are asked to try to stick to the recommended training period of 3-6 months before climbing Mount Kinabalu.

We were also instructed to bring appropriate footwear and clothing, but for some reason, we did not get good trainers or lightweight hiking boots. All our lives, we’ve been used to hearing how some of the locals wear Adidas Kampung when climbing the mountain. Of course, it also did not help knowing that the locals have been known to run up and down the mountain in less than 3 hours!

After calling the fundraising dinner a wrap, on the following day 21 September, my husband Helmie, daughter Zeira and son Zeff dashed off to get trekking apparel for the “big” climb. When we reached the meeting point, we were given a final briefing at 7.00 pm at Sabah Parks by our team leader Mr. Vem.

FEATURE STORY On Sunday 22 September, we started our climb at Timpohon Gate at 8.30 am. We had not anticipated how difficult the journey would be; it took us close to 11 hours to reach Laban Rata (3,273 meter above sea level). My lower calves had never been so sore in my entire life. However, Zeff, who turned 12 on 19 September, did much better than us. He reached Laban Rata safely with the second group around 4.00 pm. He was ahead of us despite his walking and climbing awkwardly in his broken shoes. I’m so proud of my children as they both refused to give up. Throughout the journey, they had declined the potters’ help and insisted on carrying their own backpacks.

Helmie, Zeira and I arrived at Laban Rata Rest House around 7.30 pm. It was dark and cold, with strong winds blowing. The higher we got the more we were out of breath. We took short rests in between but kept moving up. Zeira was already quite weak by then and could hardly go further. I remembered I had earlier asked the potter to carry her to Laban Rata. She refused, she kept telling me, “No mummy, I can do this,” although she was extremely exhausted.

Her self-discipline and determination helped her conquer everything that was in her way en route to Laban Rata. Thank goodness to our excellent lady guide and potter (who eventually carried Ziera’s bag and mine).

When we thought everything was going to be fine, the unexpected happened. I will never forget this, upon arriving Laban Rata, I fell on a rock and hurt my left foot and knee. I was strongly advised not to climb

any further. My fellow climbers comforted me with words such as “the mountain will always be here”, “don’t risk your life for it”. After thoroughly assessing my condition, I opted to stay back although I was ready to ascend. My son had gotten up at 1.30 am and urged me not to go. I then acquiesced, partly due to my problematic weak knee.

My dorm mates also chimed in, voicing their concern over what would be a decision made based on the wishes of the heart. I thought some of them had their point, I could always return when I was fitter.

Sadly, none of the Helmies made it to the peak of Kinabalu. How I wish we did!

I can say my family and I are extremely honoured to be part of Klimb for Kancer, it was truly an out-of-thisworld experience. I climbed the mountain to honour my late uncle as well as those who have lost their lives to cancer.

Climbing Mount Kinabalu has been one of the best experiences of my life. Triumphant climbers, I have heard, are amply rewarded with an incredible view of one of the best sunrises in this part of the world. I will definitely come back again, hopefully then I will make it to the peak.

KLIMB for KANCER 2013

The day a group of us were setting out to climb Mount Kinabalu, we were greeted with a clear, bright and sunny day.

On 22 September, 21 climbers including 3 cancer survivors took to the mountain. As a significant event for MAKNA, we named the project, “Klimb for Kancer”, and used the letter “K” after the “K” in “Kinabalu”. The event brought together cancer survivors, regular donors, volunteers and staff of various ages.

The youngest was 12-year old Zeff and the oldest, 58- year old cancer survivor, Sagawoh Maliban from Sabah, all revved up to climb the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia to raise funds for cancer patients.

I had the honour and privilege to lead the team.

We started from a point known as Timpohon Gate just after 8.00 am on Sunday. We stayed overnight at Laban Rata guest house (3,273 meter above sea level), before pushing on to

the summit early next morning. 7 climbers eventually made it to the peak, several climbers called it the day after reaching different points while the rest decided to remain at Laban Rata.

It took 2 days to ascend and descend the mountain.

Klimb for Kancer was very special because not only it was a stirring effort and cause, it also showed how the human spirit can prevail in face of extreme challenges. This couldn’t have been more precise in the case of a cancer patient, a true measure of what it means to overcome an acute test of endurance.

FEATURE STORY For Nazri, moving his body at the incredible steep gradient was really amazing. Nazri and I reached the Sayat-Sayat check point at a quarter past 5.00 am. This check point closes at 5.00 am, hence we were not able to continue to the peak. Nazri may not have gotten to the peak, but he touched many lives with his determination in standing up to cancer.

Remembering the words of Mr. Melvin Tong made us feel we had more than achieved what had come for. Melvin, the first amputee to scale Mount Kinabalu in 2010 had said; “We do it for the cause, not for applause”.

As we stood there proudly, no man looked more pleased and ecstatic than Nazri did, at 3,668.10 meters high, at the Sayat-Sayat entrance.

Seven climbers including 2 cancer survivors; Sagawoh Maliban 58 (colon cancer) and Rozieana Jorun 26 (T–Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) went all the way up on the peak. Coincidentally, both are Sabahans.

This event would not have been possible without the encouraging support from many individuals and corporations. Corezone sponsored the survivors’ climbing apparel, while the climbers’ t-shirts were provided by Global Gases Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Our sincere thanks to Seagull, Hari-Hari, iNPublishers, Creative HomeX, Kompleks Karamunsing, Crest Megaway, Puri Ratu, Sawit Kinabalu, SLDB, MAS Wings, Shangri-La Spa & Resort, Kota Kinabalu and Sabah Parks for believing in the cause and making the climb ever so worthwhile.

Walaupun dengan satu kaki, itu bukanlah satu alasan untuk kita tidak berjaya. Matlamat saya adalah untuk mencabar diri saya sebagai pesakit kanser yang merupakan orang kurang upaya (OKU) mampu sampai ke tahap yang dikehendaki. Saya juga ingin membantu pesakit kanser yang senasib dengan saya supaya dapat meneruskan hidup tanpa memikirkan penyakit yang dialami.

Halangan yang paling bahaya dan mencabar sewaktu mendaki menggunakan tali sejauh 300 meter yang agak curam. Semasa itu saya hanya menggunakan tali sepenuhnya tanpa bantuan tongkat. Akhirnya saya sampai ke Sayat-Sayat (3,668.10 meter atas paras laut, 426.9 meter lagi ke puncak) dengan selamat. Walaupun penat dan sukar bernafas tetapi saya rasa bersyukur kerana diberi rezeki dan peluang untuk melihat keindahan alam – Ahmad Nazri Hamzah, 23 tahun, wira kanser

Dear Climbers, I participated in the 25th Mt.Kinabalu International CLIMATHON 2011.

I took 3;13:29 to reach the summit. My total completed time was 05:38;46, position 35.

My advice to the climbers:- Always keep closely to the rope when scaling the rocky mountain. Secondly, you can be strong but the AMS can defeat you!

Remember the top is 4092.2M above mean sea level!

Talk About Your Feelings

Eat Well

Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled. It is part of taking charge of your wellbeing and doing what you can to stay healthy.

There are strong links between what we eat and how we feel – for example, caffeine and sugar can have an immediate effect. But food can also have a long-lasting effect on your mental health.

Keep in Touch Friends and family can make you feel included and cared for. They can offer different views from whatever’s going on inside your own head. They can help keep you active, keep you grounded and help you solve practical problems.

Accept Who You Are Some of us make people laugh, some are good at math, others cook fantastic meals.

Some of us share our lifestyle with the people who live close to us, others live very differently. We’re all different.

Do Something You’re Good At What do you love doing? What activities can you lose yourself in? What did you love doing in the past? Enjoying yourself helps beat stress. Doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it and achieving something boosts your self-esteem.

Ask for Help None of us are superhuman. We all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things go wrong. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help.

Care for Others Caring for others is often an important part of keeping up relationships with people close to you. It can even bring you closer together.

Take a Break

A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. It could be a five-minute pause from cleaning your kitchen, a half-hour lunch break at work or a weekend exploring somewhere new. A few minutes can be enough to de-stress you.

Keep Active Experts believe exercise releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good.

Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep, look and feel better. Exercise also keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy.

Live fundraising appeal for

Bright Future Fund, Vietnam Partnership between BFF and MAKNA to help build capacity in fighting cancer

After two years of ground work, “The Fund for Cancer Patients – Bright Future Fund (BFF)”, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, Vietnam in collaboration with Vietnam Television (VTV) went live on air on 14 September 2013 to appeal to the public to contribute to the fund.

The event was attended by high profile guests such as Vietnam State Vice President, Mme. Nguyen Thi Doan, Minister of Health, Mme. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien and Vice Health Minister cum BFF President, Mme. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Social Affairs, Mme. Truong Thi Mai, and leaders of relevant Ministry of Health’s Departments, Administration, managers and doctors from K-Hospitals, representatives of sponsors and pharmaceutical companies and the business community in Hanoi, and nearly one 34

hundred children who were undergoing treatment in the oncology departments of K-hospitals and national pediatric hospital.

The appeal was made by the Health Minister, calling on government agencies, domestic and international organisations, businesses and people from all walks of life to join hands to fight cancer with the message, “every little bit helps”. Millions of audience watched the event live and were moved by the plight of cancer sufferers.

Besides the appeal, the broadcast included a talkshow which featured stories of real patients. The fundraising event also allowed donations via SMSes. All the monies collected were channelled to the BFF to help K-patients. After 2 hours of appeal, the total fund raised from the SMS was VND 3,257,500,000 (RM 465,000) and from direct donation was VND 77,850,000 (RM11,000). The event will be held annually during the mid-autumn festival.

understanding and the signatories were MAKNA President, Dato’ Mohd Farid Arifin and BFF President, Mme. Nguyen Thi Xuyen. The agreement outlined MAKNA’s scope of commitment where among others, it would work with the BFF to strengthen the capacity in fighting cancer and increase awareness of the disease in Vietnam.

Besides this, early detection programme to reduce cancer mortality will be initiated together with expanding education and communications on cancer to the general public. The other commitments included initiating cancer research collaborations, providing financial support to poor cancer patients and promoting fundraising activities to support cancer patients and sustain its operation in Vietnam. For example, MAKNA helped BFF to organise two training courses for 200 participants on Cancer Awareness in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from 2010 to 2011, two training courses on Breast and Cervical Cancer screening for 127 participants in Hanoi and Hue in 2013.

Before the event, MAKNA Vietnam had worked on raising funds to support BFF. For example, MAKNA Malaysia guided and supported MAKNA Vietnam to appeal to all Malaysian companies in Vietnam to donate to BFF. The working relationship with BFF was a manifestation of MAKNA’s commitment to act as a bridge and catalyst in contributing to the fight against cancer in Vietnam. In the next months, more substantive awareness programme, communications and fundraising acitivities will be carried out.

Abang Hashim Gets A

CLEAR VISION

As part of MAKNA Continuous Education programme, all staff are given the opportunity to visit and “stay in” with cancer patients. In April 2013, my team of five had the privilege to pay a courtesy call to Abang Hashim at his home in Kota Samarahan, Kuching, Sarawak. Despite the cataract in his right eye, his family is still reliant on him for bringing food to the table as well as supporting and caring for his son and three daughters. Their life took a turn for the worse when one of his daughters, 10 year old, Hasniza was diagnosed with cancer.

Hasniza was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma with panhypopituitarism (cancer of the brain that occurs more often in children and young adults) at just 4 months old.

Abang Hashim’s family lives in a small brick house with basic amenities. The family’s source of income (which is very inconsistent) comes from their construction worker father. Things can be a bit “depressing” when there are dry spells in available construction jobs and this sometimes can go on for weeks, and even lasting up to a month or more.

If and when Hasniza falls ill, Abang Hashim has to take her to Hospital Umum Sarawak for treatment.

The nerve in her brain affected by cancer has left her disabled and she requires 24-hour attention.

As such, her mother is house-bound, taking care of her. Travelling to hospital can be a nerve-wrecking, 2-hour long ride, not counting the waiting time for the hired pick-up van which sometimes comes at irregular hours and only takes her to the main road.

From here, it is another long wait for the public bus to get to the hospital.

Hasniza also has a school-going sister Hasnida, 11 years old and one younger sister Hasrina, 5 years old.

Today Hasniza is bed-ridden and needs to be cleaned and fed with liquid diet. Her nutritional milk is mixed with medication and fed orally using a feeding syringe. One feeding session can last up to 2 hours, during which time her mother cautiously ensures Hasniza burps after a few feedings which prevents her from throwing up.

Our stay with Abang Hashim’s family lasted two nights three days and we got ourselves involved in their daily chores besides making observations and recording information for our organisation’s improvement.

LIFE GOES ON This live-in experience has made us appreciate the everyday experience of a cancer patient better, and in turn has helped us appreciate our own lives, keeping ourselves grounded and focused to the challenges in helping cancer patients.

Throughout the years, through continuous support from donors, we have been assisting this family with: 1) monthly financial assistance for Hasniza’s follow-up sessions at the hospital, 2) provision of a wheelchair for Hasniza, 3) disposable diapers 4) nutritional milk The help will still continue until the family’s economic status improves.

From our observation, it occurred to us that Abang Hashim had to be encouraged to seek treatment for the cataract in his right eye. After reasoning with him, he agreed to go for an eye check-up and that’s when we brought him to a nearby Klinik Kesihatan. He was then referred to Hospital Umum Sarawak.

Abang Hashim made a few trips to the hospital after that. After an operation in July 2013, his vision was restored and was able to see clearly again. We learnt from his wife that he was reluctant to go for the surgery as he would be unable to feed his family during the period of recovery, as he wouldn’t be able to work. There was also a lingering fear of blindness that kept him from seeking help.

Thanks to the help of the hospital’s welfare officers who contributed to making his eyesight better again.
