pays homage to the brand's iconic butterfly. The use of threedimensional ombre textured panels promotes constant visual interest through movement, an effect created as a result of the daily changes of direct and indirect light. The complementing interiors were designed by Burdifilek, whose inspiration was based on cubism and natural sculptural forms. With the intention to support the ceremonious retail experiences, while creating an overall sense of function and designated compartmentalization. The seamless product display framework creates allocated shops while maintaining an overall look of cohesiveness. A subtle background of mixed materiality in tonal finishes and natural color palette, further support the elegant showcase of the retail products without distraction.

Visually representing Neiman's deep appreciation for the arts, the interior, is further enhanced by a curated collection of artwork specifically sourced by local and regional artists from the New York Area. The company maintains its corporate mission to support the programming of youth arts education through the continuation of contribution for designated local charities like The Heckscher Museum of Art and The Nassau County Museum of Art. Maintaining the ethos set forth by The Marcus family for over six decades, the brand continues to create an unparalleled retail experience, which starts with superior service and concludes with exclusive fashion. The retailer places a high importance of technological advancements through innovative instore applications and enhanced amenities. NM Exclusives perfect the art of shopping with complimentary personal shopping and beauty services, valet parking, wardrobe consultations, tailored alterations and InCircle Loyalty Programs.

Kimberly Guilfoyle Fox News Host and Analyst By Jennifer Pelaez | Photos by Cam Camarena Jojo Rodriquez, Makeup | Michelle Frazetta, Hair

V

ivacious, outspoken, ambitious and perceptive, Kimberly Guilfoyle is a force to be reckoned with, both in her legal and ensuing broadcasting career, and in her ability to balance her success in the professional arena with her personal life and passions. While her charismatic smile and engaging persona are the first things one may notice about Kimberly, it is her inspiring spirit, positive energy and empowering life story which make her such an interesting woman. It’s no wonder she is so well-regarded among her peers and fans. As co-host of The Five on Fox News Channel and one of TV’s most sought-after legal analysts and opinion-shapers, this former model and prosecutor has certainly made a name for herself, having prospered in two high-pressure vocations - law and television. Kimberly Guilfoyle’s initial call to law can be attributed to her upbringing and her father’s words of wisdom, which taught her to become a fearless advocate and to live life with no regrets. Born in San Francisco, California to a Puerto Rican mother and an Irish-American father, Kimberly sadly encountered misfortune at the early age of 11, losing her mother to leukemia. Her father assumed the responsibility of raising her and her younger brother,

Anthony, and instilled lessons about the importance of being resilient and self-empowered. Kimberly credits her parent’s sound foundation of love, strong values and benevolence, to shaping and inspiring her to become involved in meaningful issues and making a difference. Growing up, she observed her family’s commitment to the community - her mother worked as a special educator, assisting children with learning difficulties and emotional needs. She often accompanied her to the classrooms and absorbed her strength and desire to help, which Kimberly later carried on in her philanthropic work and involvement in public service with charities like The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, in which she is on the Children’s Council, and the Esophageal Cancer Education Foundation, which awarded her efforts with the ECEF Shining the Light Recognition Award. Her father’s lessons to not back down came into practice in her subsequent years as a San Francisco prosecutor where both her parents served as a source of inspiration in the cases she took on, working with abused and neglected children and prosecuting serious cases involving gangs and homicides. April 2016 | 47

Her assertive nature and ability to argue emphatically paved the way to her success at the San Francisco District Attorney’s office, where she served as an Assistant District Attorney, soon after moving on to the Los Angeles offices, where she assumed greater responsibilities as a Deputy District Attorney. This was shortly after the O.J. Simpson verdict, an interesting time where Kimberly took on a large volume of cases while making some lifelong friends and meaningful professional relationships. Another relationship that began to blossom was one with the now former Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom. They began seriously dating which brought Kimberly back to her hometown and the San Francisco District Attorney’s office once again, this time as Managing Attorney of the Trial Division. A pivotal point in her career, her role as co-prosecutor in the case People v. Noel and Knoller, a seconddegree murder trial involving a vicious dog mauling, received great media attention and garnered much recognition for Kimberly. This was one of the most publicized criminal cases in San Francisco history involving two Presa Canario dogs that attacked and killed national lacrosse champion, Diane Whipple, outside her Pacific Heights apartment. The defendants were found guilty on all five criminal charges, the first in California history to be convicted of murder from a dog attack. The case later made its way to the California Supreme Court where it was affirmed on appeal and made headlines around the world. It was an emotional time for Kimberly; not only was it such a precedentsetting win, but on an emotional level she had to deal with death threats and round-the-clock protection after authorities learned that the Aryan Brotherhood had put a contract out on her life. Not the ideal timing for a wedding, however the bride and groom went ahead with their plans. She recalls, “It was an interesting time - walking down the aisle in a Vera Wang dress with bomb-sniffing dogs.”

Propelled onto the national and international arena, Kimberly Guilfoyle, now a well-recognized name, began receiving offers from the East Coast. She traded in her life as a San Francisco prosecutor and mayoral wife to come to New York where she began a successful career in television. An adjustment for sure, but her positive outlook and ambition to undertake new challenges took on this transition as an opportunity - a new chapter in her life. Kimberly says, “Sometimes God presents you with an opportunity and a door opens and you have to be fearless to be able to walk through it to follow your dreams.” This new chapter began with her taking over as anchor for Rikki Klieman at Court TV, while also serving as a legal analyst for ABC News. She was featured regularly on ABC’s Good Morning America, as well as CNN’s Larry King Live, and Anderson Cooper 360, covering major cases like JonBenet Ramsey, Natalee Holloway and Kobe Bryant, among many. You may now recognize Kimberly Guilfoyle from Fox News’ The Five, where she has become part of the family as one of their co-hosts. When asked to describe the opinion talk show, Kimberly laughs that it can be fun and engaging, compelling and thought-provoking, yet also irreverent and hilarious. The chemistry among the five personalities is key, and the discussions range from pressing and serious issues like national security and the Middle East, to more light-hearted banter about hot topics like style trends and other water cooler talk; there is something for everyone, which is what makes it great for the whole family to enjoy. When asked to speak more about her career transition and why lawyers seem to succeed as TV personalities, she explains that it’s rooted in their legal training which emphasizes a clear thought process in which information is processed in a very quick, precise and analytical way, which is easily transferable to the skill set needed to be a top anchor/interviewer. Dealing with contention, quick-thinking and clarity of message are all skills that not only prepare you for the courtroom, but for interviewing and participating in live debates, as well as for working out in the field. Kimberly equates presenting a case to the jury with presenting a story to her viewers, “How can I connect, what are the points I need to hit to make them feel like they are in my shoes experiencing this - it’s a way you process and approach it that can be very helpful.” While her professional resume and accolades are quite impressive, Kimberly Guilfoyle’s candor and openness about her hardships and life at home make her relatable and inspiring. When asked what her passions are, she says, “Justice makes me tick.” She has made it her life’s mission to fight for those who don’t have a voice, and to be courageous and resilient. She can relate to these victims and connect with

their situations, having experienced much loss in her life with the passing of both her parents. She finds comfort in helping people seek closure and peace. Her other passion, which lies closer to home, is her family, especially her son, Ronan Anthony Villency. Kimberly opens up about her second divorce and co-parenting with ex-husband, furniture heir and style arbiter, Eric Villency. They have a very amicable relationship and she remains close with his family. She loves to be present and involved with her friends and family, and feels her best when giving back and engaging with them; she doesn’t believe in limiting herself. As her father once said, “You don't make this life about you, but about other people; no matter what you do, don't change your heart.” These words are ones Kimberly lives by and strives each day to create something she is proud of. She shares all these experiences and lessons in her book, Making the Case, which was published last year, and is comprised of stories and anecdotes that reveal practical and relatable advice that she has herself used and learned from throughout the years, both in the courtroom and in her personal life. She divulges ways to overcome obstacles and to always keep moving ahead. As Kimberly says, “You open your heart and life, and great things can happen.”

520 Park Avenue At the Summit of Luxury

L

By W.A. Muller

ocated at East 60th Street between Park and Madison Avenue, 520 Park Avenue will be the tallest building on Manhattan’s historic Upper East Side. The 54-story tower offers 33 discrete and exclusive residences valued at an average price of $38M.

Park Avenue will set a new standard for elegant design on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and we are certain this luxury residential building will become a landmark in a treasured city neighborhood,” said William L. Zeckendorf.

Recently, Zeckendorf Development revealed new renderings of the grand lifestyle balconies gracing the Central Park facing façade of its uppermost floors. The balconies begin 480 feet above the ground, from the 40th floor. Their design, like the overall 800-foot limestone-clad tower, are reminiscent of neighboring classic Upper East Side buildings, such as The Pierre and The Sherry-Netherland. Designed by world renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), the balconies are 42 feet in length by seven feet in depth, making them the largest balconies on any tower.

Featuring 31 magnificent residences with expansive interior layouts, this intimate residential condominium will offer many features unique to the Upper East Side, including 4,000 square feet of dedicated residential ground floor space.

Zeckendorf Development, is led by third-generation developers, brothers Arthur and William L. Zeckendorf, is a privately owned real estate firm. The company is responsible for some of the most successful projects in New York history. World renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern at 520 Park Avenue has designed another timeless and classic Manhattan residential building. 520 52 | 25A Black Market Issue

The 31 residences will be comprised of 23 full floor apartments each approximately 4,600 square feet, with 225 feet of exterior exposures and spectacular city views. 7 duplex apartments each approximately 9,100 square feet, and 1 triplex apartment with 12,400 interior square feet and 1,150 square feet of exterior space. The duplex and triplex apartments will have uninterrupted views of Central Park, the Upper East Side and Midtown. The full floor units consist of four bedrooms, living room, dining room, spacious kitchen and a family room. The expansive duplex residences consists of a living room, library, dining room, eat in kitchen, family room and 6 bedrooms.

Each residence will feature select-cut solid white oak hardwood flooring in herringbone and overlay patterns and a variety of over 10 exquisite marble treatments. All master bathroom suites will be comprised of two full baths complete with steam showers and soaking tub. The building will be entirely clad in Indiana limestone articulated with French balconies and stone detailing evocative of the great New York apartment buildings of the 1920’s and 1930’s. A multi-story crown tops the building adding a new dimension to the New York City skyline. “We are excited to partner again with Zeckendorf Development in another outstanding luxury residential Manhattan development. 520 Park Avenue will be a remarkable and sought after Upper East Side residential address,” said Eyal Ofer, Chairman of Global Holdings, Inc. Luxury amenities will complement the elegance of the residences. Included will be a private, two-story 8,000 square foot world class health club featuring exercise room, pool and locker rooms facilities to match the finest spa standards. Enhancing the residences is a 1,800 square foot ground floor private exterior garden, a wine storage, bicycle storage, private resident storage spaces, and a library. “520 Park Avenue will be an elegant addition to this Upper East Side

neighborhood. Robert A.M. Stern again has contributed a building design that echoes the best of New York City architecture in a 21st century development. When we built 15 Central Park West also designed by Robert A.M. Stern, we then wanted to create a similar iconic limestone residence for the Upper East Side,” said Arthur Zeckendorf. Residents and guests will enter 520 Park Avenue through a double arched entrance with a suspended bronze canopy, leading into a soaring lobby with 25’ coffered ceilings and an impressive and welcoming limestone fireplace. Beyond the lobby is a vaulted salon with a fireplace at each end. The floors and walls in the lobby are limestone with French walnut wood in the wall treatment, and satin bronze detailing. A finely crafted Venetian plaster ceiling carries through with the wood accents as well. “Working with our partners, Zeckendorf Development and Eyal Ofer’s Global Holdings, along with architect Robert A.M. Stern, we are confident that 520 Park Avenue will be a notable and welcome addition to the New York City skyline,” said Rafael Nasser. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2017 with sales and marketing to commence imminently. 520parkavenue.com April 2016 | 53

ost of us love a good burger – that familiar, delicious sandwich consisting of a bun, a main protein, and other ingredients such as cheese, onion slices, and sauces. With the evolution of tastes and dietary needs, we’ve seen many modern twists on this classic food going beyond a traditional beef patty, including different proteins and sizes (who doesn’t love sliders?). It’s safe to say the burger isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so it’s time to put your own spin on a classic dish. With spring rapidly approaching, there will be a lot more entertaining as the weather gets warmer, followed by summer when many people’s meals revolve around the grill. This is the perfect opportunity to begin experimenting with new burger creations. Get creative with your ingredients and think outside the box – while you could make a burger with your basic chopped meat, put that aside and come up with some fun alternatives.

To start, pick a protein. There are so many options available for every palate. Think about ingredients like ground turkey or chicken, lamb, pulled pork, or chorizo. If you prefer seafood, lump crab meat and tuna are delicious protein options. For vegetarians, try tofu, or combinations of beans, grains, mushrooms and legumes to make a veggie burger. Pick and choose your favorite ingredients and use that as the base for your burger.

1. Sweet potato black bean burger with chipotle maple aioli 2. Ahi tuna burger with cilantro chili lime sauce 3. Black rice mushroom burger with cucumber garlic yogurt 4. Whiskey blue cheese burger with lager cheese sauce & crispy onions

Next, it’s time to pick your bun. You can take a traditional route with an oversized English muffin, or you can visit your local bakery to see what rolls they have that day, such as pumpernickel buns, brioche buns, pretzel rolls, or Kaiser rolls. You don’t have to buy the typical bun that comes in a pack of eight in a plastic bag at the grocery store. Getting a special bun will change the dynamic of the burger and truly elevate any backyard barbeque. For toppings, be unique and go crazy with them! It’s up to you to garnish your burger with your favorite items. Some toppings that I like are roasted chili corn relish, bacon marmalade, adobo sauce, achiote seasoning, chipotle ketchup, lager cheese sauce, fried green tomatoes, and sunny side up eggs. The great thing about a burger is you can completely customize it to your liking. Here are my top 10 burger picks to inspire you:

5. Oregano scented lamb burgers with feta tomatoes and tzatziki spread 6. Chorizo burger with grilled poblano peppers and melted Oaxaca cheese 7. Lump crab cake burger with watercress and basil tartar aioli 8. Buffalo style chicken burger with crumbled blue cheese and celery mayo 9. USDA sirloin burger with crispy shallots, sautéed spinach and bacon mayo 10. Grilled turkey burger with cheddar, avocado and alfalfa sprouts

The Rise of The Culinary Pop-up With The Global Team of One Star House Party

A

By Stephanie L. Howitt

s a culturally rich and diversely expansive city, New York continues to remain a premier culinary epicentre. Fostering a high pressure and creatively competitive world, one in which Restaurateurs are ruled by reviews.

us behind the scenes of their upcoming venture, an alternative culinary experience which is set to provide an infusion of flavours and a high level of interaction in an Airbnb loft in Lower Manhattan, debuting from April 5th until April 10th.

However, for Chef James Sharman, a former protege of Tom Aikens and Chef de partie at NOMA, accompanied by his globally-trained culinary team of Kevin McCrae, William Wade, Bart Szymcazk, and Trisha McCrae, are breaking from tradition with their latest venture, One Star House Party. A transitional epicure pop-up and unique solution for the most discerning of tastemakers.

Define the mission of One Star House Party? The most important aspect for us is to give our guests an honest experience. So many fine dining restaurants get sucked into a cycle of reviews and critics. Scared of losing the accolades that keep them going, they resort to a formula, like a show; carrying out a set progression of rehearsed steps through an evening. As if there is a recipe to having a good time, it's mad. We wanted to create something personal and free from the rules, to recreate that feeling you have at an amazing dinner party, over and over again.

Collectively hailing from some of the most innovative dining establishments throughout Denmark, Sydney and London. One Star House Party takes 56 | 25A Black Market Issue

How does this venture vary from other innovative culinary experiences? Of course, the venues makes the whole experience much more versatile; each city has a different vibe, and the apartment we find reflects that. As a culinary experience, the way we structure the menu & the influences behind the food are quite unorthodox. We build a seven course ‘sharing-tasting menu,’ where each dish is a showpiece in the centre of the table reflecting the origin of the ingredients. Having so many different chefs that are all at the apex of their training, where they're all bursting for a creative outlet, but not quite ready for their own restaurants has an enormous impact on the food. What upcoming pop-ups do you have on the horizon? We start in New York, opening for six nights. Then pack up the whole

restaurant, the kitchen, and the team into an RV, before setting off to San Francisco for the next pop-up. Later this year, we are focusing on Asia with dates in Tokyo, Seoul & Taipei. Overall, when attending a limited One Star House Party, one can anticipate a completely immersive evening of sensory enjoyment. It is a revitalising experience which opens minds to elevate culinary curiosity while simultaneously satisfying palates. The environment is rugged, fast-paced and packed full of a high level of excitement and overwhelming passion, which universally pierces through each restaurant produced by the team of One Star House Party. onestarhouseparty.com April 2016 | 57

The Truth about Hot Peppers Some Like it Spicy

D

By Melinda Myers

on’t be afraid to add a little spicy heat to your meals this season by growing a few hot peppers in the garden or containers. It’s easier than you think and many of the hot pepper myths floating around the garden are simply not true.

Don’t worry about your hot peppers heating up your sweet peppers. Peppers are normally self-pollinated. If an insect happens to move the pollen from a hot to sweet pepper, it will not affect the flavor or heat of this year’s harvest. If you save the seeds from a cross-pollinated pepper and plant them in next year’s garden, the plants they produce may have hot or sweet fruit (or a little of both), but only time will tell. 58 | 25A Black Market Issue

And don’t assume all green peppers are sweet or you will be in for a surprise. Jalapenos are typically harvested when green and others, like habanero, Anaheim and Poblano are hot, whether harvested when green or red. You'll also find that hot peppers can be yellow, orange, brown and of course red. You can turn down the heat when preparing your favorite recipes, too. Contrary to popular belief, all the heat in hot peppers does not come from the seeds. While partially true, the majority of the capsaicin that gives hot peppers their heat is in the white membrane that houses the seeds. When the seeds are growing they may also be coated with extra capsaicin from the membrane. So remove the white membrane and the seeds, just to be safe, if you want to turn down the heat.

The spicy heat of hot peppers is measured in Scoville Heat Units. The ratings are based on the amount of sugar water needed to neutralize the spicy heat in the extracted capsaicin that has been diluted in an alcoholbased extract. A panel of five taste testers decides when the spicy heat has been neutralized and then assigns the rating. Today many companies use a chemical process (liquid chromatography) but translate their results into the popular Scoville heat units. The Scoville heat unit ratings vary from one type of hot pepper to another, with Poblano rating between 1000 to 2000, jalapenos 2500 to 6000, habaneros at 100,000 to 300,000 and one of the hottest, the ghost pepper, at 1,000,000 to 2,200,000 Scoville heat units. Check online or the Homegrown with Bonnie Plants mobile app (for iOs and Android) for the Scoville ratings, growing tips and a Pepper Chooser to help you pick the best varieties to grow. Ratings may also vary from individual plants within a specific type based on individual plant differences and the growing conditions. Whatever kind you grow, be sure to label hot peppers when planting, harvesting and storing to avoid any mix-ups. The sweet banana pepper,

for example, can easily be confused with hot banana. This could make for an unwelcome surprise when preparing, serving and eating. Also, consider wearing rubber gloves and avoid touching your face and eyes when working with hot peppers, as they can burn. Wash your hands, utensils and cutting boards when finished to avoid any future issues. And don’t worry if you are having a bad day when planting your hot peppers. Contrary to some old adages, planting hot peppers when you’re angry won’t make the peppers hotter, but unknowingly taking a bite of a hot pepper may very well change your mood. he experience of going to a restaurant should be about more than just the food. There are a lot of special traditions that go into how food is prepared and presented to create a satisfying experience for the patron. Sushi Seki embraces this aspect of the dining experience with a section of their restaurant called the Kappo Counter, that allows diners to have fun trying a series of special tasting courses masterfully prepared by the chef using the finest ingredients of the season and geared toward the diner's tastes.

at least once. This is a small counter consisting of only five seats facing the open kitchen, which creates a relationship between the patrons and the chef. When you are seated at the Kappo Counter you get a special seven- course Kappo menu. Each item also has a specially selected sake or wine pairing available. It's exciting watching these acclaimed chefs at work and tasting all of their specially prepared dishes. The variety of ingredients and special tastings makes the Kappo Counter a great way to sample sublime food.

Sushi Seki is the creation of Chef Seki who makes it a matter of importance that everyone feel welcome and comfortable. The restaurant is meant to be a fun, casual place with contemporary food. Of course, the freshest sushi is the main attraction and it comes in all varieties. One of their best dishes is the seared salmon and spicy scallop roll. A variety of both savory and sweet sauces enhance many of the sushi creations. For diners who would rather dine on cooked dishes, they also have a good selection of entrees as well as an oyster bar.

The restaurant-going experience should stimulate all the senses. Sushi Seki is a place to go to where variety and diversity are key phrases. Dine on raw or cooked food, watch a performance, eat at the sushi bar or oyster bar or reserve a seat at the Kappo Counter to watch the chefs and experience a taste of everything that they specially prepare. No matter what kind of dining experience you're looking for, Sushi Seki is likely to have it.

Although Sushi Seki offers a variety of ways to experience the food, the aforementioned Kappo Counter is one option that everyone should try

ive into the fantastical and mesmerizing environment of Oceana where fish is at the top of the food chain. Oceana is located on 49th Street in Manhattan between Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. Here, Chef Ben Pollinger uses pure and natural ingredients as the basis for all of his dishes, so that diners can enjoy the best flavors of the deep, as well as the land.

At Oceana, Chef Pollinger creates innovative dishes with bold, unique flavors that tantalize the palate, blending some of the world’s most exotic ingredients with the freshest fish in the sea. He has masterfully crafted some of Oceana’s most popular dishes, such as the Seafood Cassoulet. This dish takes monkfish confit and smoked salmon sausage and combines it with saucisson blanc, topping it off with tarbais beans. Asian influences are abundant at Oceana, especially in General Tsao’s Lobster, a succulent lobster prepared in spicy sweet and sour sauce, scallions and cashews and placed upon a pilaf of forbidden rice, as well as Tamari Glazed Steelhead Salmon in shiitake broth and served with water chestnuts and soybeans. Diners who prefer poultry or meat have a variety of choices as well. The Roasted Amish Chicken served with black trumpet mushrooms, thigh confit and green mole, is a standout dish. Prime meat choices range from a Dry Aged Black Angus Rib Eye served au jus, or Certified Angus Beef Filet Mignon served with a natural jus to a juicy Black Angus Burger with aged cheddar cheese, bacon and French fries. 64 | 25A Black Market Issue

There is also a well-stocked raw bar consisting of the freshest oysters—from Wikomico and Moonstone to Fanny Bay, to name a few, chilled seafood cocktails and a variety of seafood towers. Oceana also offers several options that will let patrons try a variety of these dishes. The seafood tower is a great choice for people dining in a larger group. Anyone looking for a more romantic experience should try the Seafood Paella for two which comes with Shrimp and Oyster Paella, to which you can also add a serving of lobster or crab. Of course after a nice dinner, you can’t go home without trying some of the marvelous dessert options available. All the desserts are made in house by Executive Pastry Chef Colleen Grapes. Chef Grapes has made a name for herself because of the inventiveness in her dishes. Not only does she invent her own desserts, but she reinterprets the classics as well. Some of her signature dishes include a Milk Chocolate Banana Soufflé made with walnut-bourbon ice cream, Chocolate Chai Tea Parfait with vanilla roasted pineapple, caramel banana bread and banana passion fruit sauce and a variety of homemade sorbets. Louie and Chan A Tale of Two Cultures

T

By Lisa Loverro

he tale of how Louie and Chan came to be may be a tall one, but worthy of explanation nevertheless. Louie, a cobbler, and Chan, a tall circus man came together in 1925 in NYC when they both had concerns of their dreams passing them by. Louie’s dream, to bring his family’s Italian recipes to the new world and Chan’s, to open a speakeasy, seemed like the perfect melding of the two as they walked down toward Broome Street on the Lower East Side of New York City and noticed an empty storefront with a basement. Many years later, in November 2014, Louie and Chan’s vision become a reality. Paying tribute to the seemingly blurred lines of the Little Italy and Chinatown neighborhoods, Louie and Chan’s serves fresh seasonal dishes, including handmade pizzas upstairs, while the hidden lounge downstairs (known as the “303”) infuses Chan’s dreams with handmade Chinese-inspired cocktails while a DJ keeps the patrons on their feet. The 44-seat restaurant’s upstairs, decorated with tufted booths and marble tables, is dimly lit with candles and trinkets of old-world Italy (think religious statues and black-and-white 66 | 25A Black Market Issue

photos) adorning the walls. For larger private parties, a 16-seat private dining room, the Louie, is available for lunch, brunch or dinner. While the menu consists of a variety of pizzas (from a basic Margherita to a spicy blue crab and grilled artichoke) and Southern Italian dishes, there are also nods to the restaurant’s Chinese influence. Tagliatelle with Fresh Sea Urchin and Spicy Cucumber, Blistered Shishito Peppers, Garlic and Szechuan Peppercorn (our favorite) make their way onto the menu as well. For dessert, the Zeppole might actually be better than those you’ll find at the local vendors during the San Gennaro feast, and the Nutella Brownie is as tasty as it sounds. Needless to say, Louie and Chan is a unique hideaway with fresh, delicious food and a cool downtown vibe. The service is attentive and friendly with a welcoming vibe that’s not always easily found in New York City. louieandchan.com.

Benjamin Steakhouse dry ages all of their prime beef in their own aging box for 28 days, ensuring the most tender and flavorful cuts of meat. In addition to the steaks, Benjamin Steakhouse also offers a wide variety of other selections such as Chilean Sea Bass, Grilled Yellowfin Tuna, Grilled Norwegian Salmon or Lobster. Reserve Cut Keeps it Kosher

pscale kosher restaurants in New York City are often hard to come by. It's even harder to find one that specializes in both European and Asian influences on its menu. With the introduction of Reserve Cut at The Setai in the Financial District , this search should now be a little easier. Reserve Cut is a, unique contemporary kosher steakhouse that serves high quality, perfectly turned out steaks and seafood. Albert Allaham, the owner of Reserve Cut and a Master Butcher has a long familial history that has brought him to this point. He was raised in a family of butchers that can be traced back 200 years from Damascus in Syria. Being a butcher is ingrained in his blood. This ancestral connection is one of the factors that compelled him to open his first high-end meat market, "The Prime Cut," in Brooklyn. His success with The Prime Cut enabled him to shape the menu at Reserve Cut. Chef Gavin Citron brings a fusion of western and eastern influences to the kosher restaurant with both European- and Asian-inspired dishes. The main attraction at Reserve Cut is the variety of prime steak. For those who prefer seafood, however, there is a separate sushi bar with top quality fish and signature rolls, including the tuna and black truffle. Sushi/sashimi platters, classic rolls and individual pieces of sushi are also available. Exquisite seafood entrees include Chilean Sea Bass or the Fresh Catch

of the Day. For poultry-lovers, there is free range poussin. To go with your meal, choose from the vast array of kosher wines offered. At Reserve Cut, you can choose from over 10 types of prime steak— including the highest grade of meat in the world—Wagyu beef, sourced from Albert Allaham's own The Prime Cut. All are dry aged for a minimum of 36 days in Reserve Cut's private aging room. Each steak entrée is prepared with the same amount of care to make them as tender and as juicy as they can be and plated with one or more of a choice of sides including roasted cauliflower, toasted pistachio nut Brussels sprouts, Thai chili and tamari glazed green beans, truffled mashed potatoes, sautéed spinach, shallots and garlic , or rosemary and garlic French fries. It often takes patience to get something just right. A cut of meat must be aged for a long time before it can become the perfect steak. It may take multiple generations of butchers before one is born that can really build upon the lessons learned by his ancestors.

Three Great Manhattan Restaurants

T

By W.A. Muller

his month it's all about the diverse flavors that New York City has to offer. We ventured downtown to explore the melting pot of flavors and cuiisines that make up the fabric of Manhattan. From a throwback to colonial India to authentic Mexican, there is somthing for everyone, which is a testament to living in the best city in the world!

Villa Cemita is a family-owned Mexican restaurant located at 50 Avenue A in New York City. The restaurant was opened after owner Alejandra Aco was inspired to create the traditional Puebla food of her family after dining at Mexican restaurants all over the city in search of these authentic regional dishes. When her search turned up empty, she committed to starting her own restaurant that lives up to her dream of authentic Mexican food, with an emphasis on the Puebla region, in New York City. Indigenous ingredients are used in all of her dishes and even outside influences from regions as far away as Spain, France and the Arabian Peninsula are evident in her eclectic menu. 50 Avenue A, NY 10009, 646.964.4528 villacemita.com

At The Royal Munkey, the exotic flavors and atmosphere of “Old Bombay are re-created. This Indian restaurant will leave the average patron feeling rich as they indulge in the wealth of flavors provided by the chef. The Royal Munkey is a great place for diners to eat their favorite Indian dishes, such as Butter Chicken Tikka Masala or Malabar Coastal Shrimp Curry, as well as expand their horizons and learn more about the excellent dishes that the subcontinent has to offer. 438 2nd Ave, NY 10010, 646.863.2249 royalmunkey.com

Freud is a new restaurant located in downtown Manhattan in the center of Greenwich village. The palate was inspired by Vienna at the turn of the century and is made up of contemporary dishes. All the food comes from chef Eduard Frauneder who is the Michelin-starred mastermind behind the beloved Austrian tavern Edi and the Wolf. Freud opened in February of 2016 and is still attracting a lot of new patrons. This is a great opportunity to try something new that has the potential of becoming a staple eating spot in the village of Greenwich. 506 LaGuardia Place, NY 10012, 212.777.0327 freudnyc.com

f you were to visit Los Angeles for 24 hours and wanted to enjoy the gastronomic trilogy, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at iconic venues where should you go ? Although there are many choices depending on your propensity for star-watching or dining under the stars themselves. Here are three go-to dining experiences to have the contact numbers for should you want to power dine in LA; Brunch at Culina, Modern Italian The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills has long been regarded as among the best hotels in Los Angeles. With Culina, Modern Italian it now has its perfect match in a busy dining field. Set in a very contemporary setting Culina, Modern Italian re-interprets the Italian cuisine under Chef Denis Dello Stritto, who grew up in a farming environment north of Naples in Italy.

The brunch/lunch dining menu strongly emphasizes wellness options and as such makes our recommendation to start your dining triathalon. Try from the revised menu the Grilled Escarole, Broccoli e Salsiccia pasta or the vegan Ortolana pizza to name but three delicious options. culinarestaurant.com Lunch at The Ivy The Ivy in Los Angeles is like dining at the country cottage belonging to your hip, super-star, gourmand relative at the centre of the entertainment 78 | 25A Black Market Issue

universe. Brunch lunch dining recommendations include the Ivy Cobb Salad (combining baby lettuce, beets, avocado, tomato, organic eggs, neuske’s bacon, roasted turkey breast and point reyes bluc cheese), Ricky’s Fried Chicken (served with grilled corn, sautéed spinach and fresh mango chutney) – in fact everything on the menu tastes great – after all, what meal would you not appreciate made by your favourite relative… heivyrestaurants.com Dinner at Craig’s Comedian Don Rickles made the quip that “this place is never gonna make it !” while Jeff Ross describes Craig’s quite effectively as “the olive garden for celebrities”. Some restaurants transcend being a place to dine and become a place to simply be – Craig’s is one of them. One of the aims of anyone seeking to ‘make it’ in LA is to secure a table in the centre of Craig’s. In fact, one can probably take a seating location at Craig’s as a barometer reading of where a celebrity is at – rising (table at the back), current hit (front and centre), over-the-hype – booth of to one side. The dinner menu ranges from Vegan options to the Grill to seafood, pasta and pizza. Try a Vegan Sausage Pizza (san marzano tomato sauce, vegan sausage, vegan cheese) or a 14oz prime New York Steak. Like Hollywood, Craig’s has something to please everyone, and of course people watching. craigs.la

Magical Malta Beauty in the Mediterranean

V

By Victoria R. Crosby

alletta is the capital of Malta, an amazing country I visited in December, staying at the Corinthia Hotel St. George's Bay. The 2016 Sports Illustrated iconic swimsuit issue, with super models, was filmed there recently.

The city is named after its founder, the Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Jean Parisot de la Valette. Valletta is a European Art City and a UNESCO World Heritage City, and will be the European Capital of Culture in 2018. There are two impressive harbors, Marsamxett and Grand Harbor. Building the city began in 1566 and with forts, bastions and a cathedral. We were told that the steps are narrow because the Knights of Malta weren’t able to stride in their heavy amour. Mdina is known as the silent city. Walking into the walled city was a surreal experience, as though I were in some kind of theme park, but this is the real deal, a true step back in time, with history dating back more than 4,000 years. The noble families of Malta lived there, descendants of Norman, Spanish and Sicilian leaders, so it is known as the Noble City. The architecture, a mix of medieval and baroque is a delight to behold. It is no surprise that many movies have been filmed in Mdina. The three cities of Malta, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua 82 | 25A Black Market Issue

have harbors in use since Phoenician times, and was the first home of the Knights of St. John, with forts, churches and bastions much older than Valletta. Malta has many stone temples that are older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Some of these are UNESCO World Heritage sights. We visited the temple at Hagar Qim. Dining in Malta is a wonderful experience, whether outdoors overlooking the sea, or in an old farmhouse in the countryside, the food is always fresh, homegrown produce, and since the islands are surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea there is always plenty of fresh fish. Malta has salt flats, olive groves and vineyards. Sitting outdoors at the restaurant La Nostra Padrona, overlooking Marsaxlokk Bay, Malta's second largest natural harbor, watching the colorful traditional Maltese fishing boats, and the ladies selling the items they made of lace, from parasols, to tablecloths and many other lovely creations, one can see the Italian influence. Another Italian influence is the glass, seen everywhere are colorful glass chandeliers and other glass objects. Mdina glass is as popular as Mirano glass.

La Nostra Padrona restaurant offer a variety of fresh seafood to choose from, mussels, calamari and local fish, accompanied by a crisp white Maltese chardonnay from Meridiana Vineyards. On a later tour of the vineyard, we tasted all the wines they produce. Several questions came up about the name of the chardonnay, Isis, but as I knew and it was explained, that is the name of an Egyptian Goddess, and they have no plans to change the name. Ta’Frenc on the island of Gozo, is an award winning restaurant with amazing cuisine prepared by chef Mario Schembri. It is housed in a 17th Century converted farmhouse surrounded by charming gardens. The meat is locally sourced, the salt is from their own salt flats in Xwejni, they produce their own olive oil, the honey is from local hives, and the bees collect nectar from the wildflowers in the meadow at Marsalforn Valley, fresh produce is all from local farms, they grow their own asparagus, and have an herb garden, plus an impressive wine cellar. The bread is baked on the premises and they rear chicken, quail and rabbit, the chef is renowned for his rabbit ravioli. Rabbit is very popular in Malta, as it is a France, although not my cup of tea! I enjoyed a lobster and prawn soup, followed by a grilled pork chop with sage and apple sauce. The ambiance is very elegant and the service impeccable. The menu is described by the chef and owners as “Global Village.” Another farm to table restaurant, in a much more casual style, is Dar Il-Bniet, in Dingli, with down home cooking in a relaxed atmosphere.

A popular stop for coffee and pastizzi, the traditional Maltese delicacies, is Café Cordina. The Cordina Family founded their bakery in 1837 in Bormla, then in 1944 relocated to Valletta. Visitors can sit inside or outside, but it is worth venturing inside to see, not only the amazing selection of cakes and pastries, and smell the wonderful aromas, but to look up to see the beautiful vaulted ceiling embellished with paintings by the renowned Maltese painter Giuseppe Cali, and the dazzling crystal chandeliers Chef Marvin Gauci is at Caviar and Bull, where the specialty is molecular cuisine. These are the innovative dishes which include specialty drinks served “smoking.” The ambiance is modern and chic, with a great view of St Georges Bay. I particularly enjoyed the smoked salmon with caviar. The Black Pig, in Valletta is another memorable restaurant. A small restaurant, they do not accommodate young children under eight, so it’s a perfect place for adults. The menu is creative and Chef Andrew Borg presents the food artistically, as did all the restaurants we visited. What I found fascinating, was a painting that took up the whole length of the wall in the dining room. It was painted on wood, then the wood was sliced and heated into curved panels. Malta is a magical country, filled with history, art and culture, as well as beaches and lovely countryside to relax and refresh the soul, and of course great cuisine! visitmalta.com

La Dolce Vita In the Italian Countryside

I

By Lisa Loverro

n the heart of the Pisan Hills, the quaint Italian town of Casciana Terme plays host to Le Querciole, a renovated farmhouse B&B sitting on approximately 22 acres of a lush landscape, primarily covered by olive trees, vineyards and fruit trees. It’s only seven miles from the highway that connects Pisa to Florence, and the towns of Siena and San Gimignano are easily accessible by car through a beautiful hilly landscape. A short walk from the house through the vineyards brings you to the center of Casciana Terme where you’ll hear music being played in the main piazza during summer, find stores to browse and enjoy dining in the town’s restaurants and cafes. Casciana Terme lies south of Pisa in a quiet and relaxing location between Cascina and the river Nera. The nearest train station is Pontedera and Pisa is the closest airport. The town is known for its spas situated in the center of the town in a beautiful green park. In the evenings people come from

84 | 25A Black Market Issue

nearby villages to enjoy ice cream and listen to music in the main square. The main house at Le Querciole has been split into two two-bedroom apartments and two three-bedroom apartments—all have air-conditioning and heating systems for year-round comfort. The old cellar has been converted into two two-bedroom apartments that can be joined to become one apartment with eight beds, perfect for a family reunion. All apartments are independent from each other with built-in magnificent rustic kitchens in each apartment. The apartments are each named for fruit grown on the property, and are furnished with the corresponding colors of that particular fruit. For example, on the first floor of the main house, the “Cherry” twobedroom apartment consists of a living room with sofa bed and access to a private bathroom and shower along with a large double bedroom. The main

characteristic of this apartment is the magnificent panoramic view in front of the kitchen and the double room. There are warm, colorful paintings in the living room and just outside you’ll be able to sample the delicious fruit and cherries that you can enjoy during the month of May. The apartment access is a staircase that starts from the veranda of the main house. Also on the first floor in the main house, their “Strawberry” apartment consists of a living room with cooking alcove, sofa bed, along with a twin bedroom, a small hallway that leads to the bathroom with shower and another large double bedroom. From the rooms of this apartment you can enjoy the view of the Tuscan countryside, up to Florence and Siena. The décor consists of clusters of strawberries throughout its upholstery. On the ground floor of the central wing of the house, Le Querciole’s “Peach” room consists of a living room with sofa bed, and a twin bedroom, along with a large bathroom with shower. The colors in this apartment use hues that fade from peach pink to orange, staying consistent with the apartment’s name. The house has a common barbecue area located in the park and a large swimming pool surrounded by olive trees with a section for children. With its large, well-tended gardens, beautiful swimming pool and spectacular views, this really is a haven of tranquility and a delightful place to enjoy the real Tuscany. You can see all the way to the town of Volterra from the house, and if the views alone don’t entice you, the many olive groves, orchards, vineyards and numerous animals kept on the land (including rabbits, horses and chickens) certainly will. The charismatic owner, Gianluigi Fagiolini, encourages his guests to help themselves by picking the fruit and vegetables on his land and he also enjoys presenting his delicious wines and excellent extra virgin olive oils in the small taverna in the house, all of which are available for sale.

In recent years “Le Querciole” played a significant role in the rediscovery of the Pisan Hills, demonstrating how it is possible for the area to create quality products while respecting the region’s agricultural tradition. Their process requires simple observation of nature in this part of Tuscany, utilizing the fertile land, vines, olive and fruit trees along with plenty of sun exposure and rain. In keeping with this theme, Gianluigi is an excellent ambassador and advocate to his home region. Reguest a guided truffle hunt with his nephew (and cutest dog ever!) or ask advice on where to eat at an exceedingly authentic meal in a nearby restaurant and Mr. Fagiolini is quick to help or even join you! It is this passion that seeps into your pores and makes you want to live La Dolce Vita. While there is Internet service here, it can be spotty at times, but you’ll more than likely want to unplug, relax and experience the abundance of fruit, wine and nature’s scenery all available at this unique and tasteful hideaway in the Tuscan countryside. lequerciole.com

Eau Palm Beach The Best of Palm Beach By Joe Alexander Perched on a pristine beach on the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by lush tropical gardens is the specular Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa. Gloriously reimagined from its previous identity as the Ritz-Carlton by iconic potter, designer and author Jonathan Adler the resort’s rooms, suites and public spaces are now playful, comfortable and breathtaking to behold. Filled with whimsical treasures all of Adler’s colorful rooms transport guests to a tranquil but fun filled retreat, with color schemes of blue and white spotted with dashes of yellow as an homage to the brilliant Florida sunshine. “ Palm Beach is lemon sorbet for the soul,” Adler says, “and the rooms needed to communicate that. The hotel is right on the ocean, so that inspired the color palette. I adore blue, yellow, and white because that’s what a vacation should be: sea, sun, and sky.” Designer Jonathan Adler Taking notes from his own vacation home in Palm Beach, Adler has created a tropical haven for the sophisticated traveler yearning for a tailored experience. Among Adler’s gestures to this historic setting is a glamorous portrait of Lady Daphne Cameron by photographer Slim Aarons, which 88 | 25A Black Market Issue

hangs on one of the living room’s walls. The designer also commissioned pieces by contemporary artists. "The art in hotels is usually an afterthought, whereas the first thing I thought of for this project was the art." Said Adler. Fittingly, the hotel was featured on the Condé Nast Traveler Top 10 Best Resorts in Southeast Florida list. Eau Spa The most sensual of all the amenities here is the hotel’s not to be missed award-winning 42,000 square feet Eau Spa. I spent a day being pampered here and I thought I was at Rancho Le Puerta. From the expert mani, pedi, facial and massage to the whirl pool, steam, sauna and rain showers, I was in Nirvana. Town & Country named it one of the Top 15 Spas in the World and Condé Nast has given it numerous rankings including the Readers choice Award as one of the Top 25 Spas in the World. The Eau Zone’s Relaxation Lounge with luxurious spa cabanas allows for total sensory escape. Among the spa’s services I recommend is the Scrub & Polish Bar that allows you to choose from a dozen formulas and of course there is a full service beauty salon. You’ll be in heaven at Eau spa.

Other amenities here include Har-tru tennis courts, two swimming pools and a varied menu of activities for the whole family. Enormous coconut palms shade the pools and courtyard, which are serviced by attendants there to fulfill your every wish from iced drinks and sunscreen to cool face towels.

of the day. Try the tamarind glazed short rib or the decadent black truffle lunette as the sun goes down. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Asian flavorings of local celebrity chef Sushi Jo attracts the foodie crowd before a live DJ spins mixes for the late night revelers.

Culinary Treats Dining at Eau Palm Beach tantalizes the senses just as much as the rest of the resort. The breakfast buffet is among the best in South Florida with an endless selection of every breakfast treat you can imagine and taking in the view of the ocean from the terrace is how you want to start every day. The modern-American Angle restaurant offers fresh line-caught fish, dry-aged prime beef, a unique selection of cocktails and an extensive wine collection. The hotel also offers lunch and light bites on their sprawling terrace overlooking the sea. Try the crab burger with fries and a fresh lemonade and enjoy the breeze. This becomes a family-friendly restaurant at the end

The Best of Palm Beach The dazzling rejuvenation of Eau Palm Beach has transformed what both veteran and first-time Palm Beach patrons imagine when they think of tropical luxury. With a new frisky feel that still stays true to the historic and opulent aura that the community is synonymous with, Eau Palm Beach is the newest and shiniest jewel on the shores. blow BEAUTY BARS Offers More Than Just the Best Blowouts

W

By W.A. Muller

e sat down with Lila B, founder and owner of Blow Beauty Bars, a shique and affordable option for your Blow out needs. With locations in Nassau County and the Hamptons, and soon to be North Jersey, she has fast become the go to beauty spot for those in the suburbs and vacation spots. Tell us about the business. How do you differentiate from competitors? I opened this business in April of 2014 in the Hamptons. After I saw the growing trend of Blow Dry Bars in metropolitan areas, I wanted to start bringing these salons to secondary markets, or vacation markets. When I was living in NYC I was managing a restaurant in Union Square and we had a Dry Bar around the corner! A lot of the women who worked for me would be getting blowouts on Thursday and they would last all weekend! It puzzled me how women were getting their hair done on a weekly basis, on a waitress salary, so I decided to check in out for myself! It was $40!! A small price to pay to have your hair looking great for 2-3 days! In Manhasset we charge even less, “drop by” price is $35, if you buy a series it’s $30 and if you are a member, ($100 a month) its $25!!

90 | 25A Black Market Issue

I wanted the women who are frequent clients reap the benefits. I always tell the girls that I believe Blow is different and/or more successful than some competitors because of the warm, hospitable feeling that you get when you walk in. I hand select all of my staff, and customer service is the most important thing to me. I want my girls to anticipate the client’s need-whether that be hair, beverage or comfort related--before they even ask. Combined with talented stylists, I think we are on the road for longevity and success here in Manhasset! What services do you offer? How long have you been in business? We are a full service blow dry bar, which means even though we specialize in blow drying, the stylists do it all! We do cuts, colors, make up, and we have an excellent brow specialist, Carina! I opened my first salon in Bridgehampton, New York in April 2014, East Hampton shortly after in June 2014, West Palm Beach Jan 2015 and Manhasset opened Feb 2016. I am opening Englewood, New Jersey, in Spring 2016! Its been a run ride, I learn more from each store, mostly what women want and what we should offer, which is why we provide the extra services. I was mortified my second month

in business when Luanne from the housewives was in my Bridgehampton store and she asked the stylist, “Can you just cut this piece right here.” I’m notorious for not saying “No,” so it was hard to have to say to anyone, let alone a realilty television star, countess and new customer! From that point on, every stylist brought their shears to work! How many locations do you have - how are the different from each other (if they are) and what are your plans for expansion? I try to keep the brand as consistent as possible, though when you are a growing business with multiple locations it can be difficult. I speak to all my managers everyday and we stay in touch collectively through email so we can make sure we are always offering the same specials, services, etc. I think one of the most important pieces of business is to have a great front person, and I have been so blessed to find wonderful, warm, capable women to run the front of house of these salons. As far as what’s next.. I would keep your eyes peeled on Brooklyn. Who is your customer? The beauty of this business, because of price and excessability, it can be anyone! We have women of all ages, I’ve seen 3 generations of women get their hair done collectively. My customer can be the stay at home mom

who is on the routine of all that entails, it can be an executive that has no time to do her own hair. Mostly it’s women who know the power of a good blowout, which is looking and feeling great! Where do you see the company in 5 years? I wrestle with that idea all the time. I want to see my company grow, but also know eventually I’ll have to slow down. My mother may kill me when she reads this, but I think expanding into Europe and Asia could be big. It hasn’t quite exploded there yet, and I’d like to stay ahead of the curve. What makes you passionate about your field? The smile on women’s faces when they walk out of Blow. I love to sit on the bench and watch them bounce out of the store smiling. I know I feel best when I look good and hair is an essential part of that. There’s a quote I’ve seen circulated on social media; "If your hair is done properly and you're wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything." –Iris Apfel. I love this quote, I believe this quote, so much of succeeding in life is because you push yourself through things you think you cannot do. I am proof of that, and my hair and shoes tend to be on point. blowbeautybars.com April 2016 | 91

ASK DR. CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI, D.O.

T

By Bennett Marcus

his is the first of a monthly medical column by this prominent Long Island doctor who specializes in longevity treatments and stem cell therapy.

1. What is stem cell therapy? Stem cell therapy is a technique in which certain cells taken from your body fat are extracted and injected into tissues or the bloodstream. These cells create healing for growth and repair of your body. The cells used in the therapy don’t have any “identity” or “blueprint.” When your eye, say, makes new cells, they can only be eye cells. Your hair or heart cells can only divide into the realm of the same cell. There is a special type of cell that exists in your fat and your bone marrow that can be used to go anywhere and take on the identity of anything else. 2. How are anti-aging medicine and stem cells linked? Anti-aging medicine involves taking steps to get the body functioning at the level that it did years before by raising vitamin and mineral levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. The use of stem cells fits into anti-aging treatment because when injected, they go to wherever there is damage or degeneration. They seek out the body’s distress signals, so if the pancreas is damaged, stem cells can get to the pancreas because of those distress signals, take on the identity of pancreatic cells, make more pancreatic cells that make insulin, and now the diabetic will make insulin again, and then their sugar comes down. Combine that with the exercise, vitamins, minerals, and hormones and you’ve reversed a very damaging process. 3. How can stem cells help with joint pain? For joint pain, from sports injuries or arthritis, stem cells are injected directly into the affected joint, the shoulder or the knee for instance, and they begin to repair damaged ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. The new cells will continue to divide, which helps the healing along. 92 | 25A Black Market Issue

4. What are the benefits of vitamin blood tests? I have created a comprehensive technique to evaluate all underlying causes of a patient’s medical problems. This is the ultimate holistic approach and it includes a physical and a series of tests, including a blood test to evaluate the body’s vitamin, mineral, and hormone levels. We go over that and determine what you should or should not eat, what exercises to do, what vitamins to take, so it’s based upon your body’s specific requirements. With this thorough evaluation, we take steps to start correcting things. This method contrasts with the traditional medical approach of treating symptoms. Every single patient I have ever seen requests the vitamin blood test. 5. What results have you seen using stem cells? Throughout the years, my stem cell treatments have achieved remarkable results in clinical trials on patients with conditions as varied as Alzheimer's, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, frailty syndrome, heart, kidney and liver failure, lupus, MS and Parkinson's. Dr. Calapai started his practice in New York City in 1986 where he still consults with patients. For over 25 years he has hosted nationally syndicated radio shows, including two weekly call-in shows on WABC 770-AM one on Saturday morning 8-9am and the other Sunday evening from 6-7pm. He has worked with numerous high-profile clients including Mike Tyson, Mickey Rourke, Steven Seagal, and Donal Logue who stars on the Fox series Gotham. He was a medical consultant for the New York Rangers and currently works with models True Model Mangament.

Balanced Hormones & Optimal Body Chemistry Are Critical to Aging Well

By Katherine Sempecos, Owner of PRISM Med Spa

T

he way people feel and perform is a combination of how close they are to their optimal body chemistry and their genetically driven responses to exercise, rest, nutrition, prescribed medications, vitamins, supplements, and hormones, as well as many other factors. The variables in this complex ecosystem are all highly interdependent. Even a small change in one can have a substantial ripple effect to many others. Due to age, stress or trauma, a person’s body chemistry falls out of balance. Maintaining your optimal body chemistry on all levels can deliver better aesthetics, better muscle to fat ratios, better levels of energy, stamina, sharper mental acuity, better memory and in turn a longer life. So what if we could use our own DNA Blood Analysis to measure each individual’s unique body chemistry? PRISM Med Spa announces its cooperation with Integrated Genetic Solutions for the North Shore. Integrated Genetic Solutions (IGS) is a California software company that developed an exciting new ‘algorithm’, capable of mathematically analyzing your DNA and bloodwork, to come up with a personalized program designed 94 | 25A Black Market Issue

to help you achieve perfect health and overall wellbeing. Our doctors now have the power to medically treat imbalances and based on these results, prescribe tailored natural bio identical hormone replacement dosages, as well as other pharmaceuticals, NSF GMP-certified supplements, vitamins, electrolytes and nutraceuticals. WOW….. REALLY? This literally takes all the guess work out of achieving perfect health, inside and out! But why is having balanced hormones so important anyway? According to one of New York’s leading authorities Dr. Maria Levada, Gynecologist and F.A.C.O.G., who is on IGS’s Medical Advisory Board for Natural Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (NBIHRT), “hormones are natural substances made by our organs and function as ‘messengers’ between cells. The balance of hormones directly affects how our bodies function. Hormone imbalance leads to fatigue, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, depression, impaired immune function, chronic illnesses, debility and premature aging. A good hormone balance translates into energy, weight control, sexual vigor, youthful appearance, and an overall sense of well-being.”

However, in recent years there’s been an ongoing debate regarding the difference between “natural” bio identical hormones versus synthetic hormone replacement therapy and the potential dangers. So how do Natural Hormones compare with Synthetic Hormones? Synthetic estrogen is derived from the urine of pregnant mares and altered in a lab to produce a patentable and profitable product. Of the 200 molecules of estrogen in this synthetic product only 2 resemble the estrogen our body makes. Synthetic progestogen is a chemical formula made in the laboratory and also does not resemble that of human progesterone. The human body may respond to synthetic hormones by developing adverse reactions such as breakthrough bleeding, bloating, abnormal elevation of LDL or bad cholesterol. When used long term, synthetic hormone therapy replacement has been linked to serious complications such as heart disease, breast cancer, strokes and blood clots. On the other hand, natural hormones are made from concentrated and purified plant extracts (soy and wild yam) and are bio-identical to the

hormones produced in the human body because their molecular structure is exactly the same. They are FDA-Approved but cannot be patented because they are natural substances. A compounding pharmacy mixes the extracts with a trans-dermal cream that is then applied topically. Natural Hormones include: Estradiol, Estriol, Estrone, Micronized Progesterone and Micronized Testosterone. The personalized dosage is now available based on your DNA and bloodwork to achieve the ‘optimal’ results. This therapy relieves all the uncomfortable symptoms for women - hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, and for both men and women - weight gain, fatigue and sex drive. And what a relief it is to finally find a precise treatment for all symptoms of hormonal aging!”

Make Healthy Eating EASY & AFFORDABLE 6 Ways to Achieve Your Goal

H

By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN

ealthy eating does not have to be difficult; it’s really as simple as that. Many clients tell me that it is “too expensive” or “too timeconsuming” to make positive dietary changes. I explain to them that when you know what you should be focusing on as well as how to structure your meals around your busy lifestyle, eating nutritiously can actually be both enjoyable and effortless.

4. Create “one-pot” meals: If your definition of a “healthy dinner” is a baked chicken, roasted sweet potatoes and burnt broccoli, no wonder you think healthy eating is time-consuming! I recommend creating easy meals that incorporate all the food groups in one simple dish. Time-saving dishes include stir-fries, soups and stews, or casseroles. Sauté some diced chicken or beef with whatever vegetables you have on hand. Steam some brown rice or quinoa and voila dinner is served! Also, the fewer dishes you have to clean, the better!

Here are six tricks to make healthy eating both stress-free and wallet-friendly: 1. Stock your pantry and fridge: When you keep your refrigerator and pantries stocked with healthy necessities like fresh produce, low-fat dairy products, lean meats, beans, nuts and seeds, and hearty whole-grains, there really is no excuse to snack on processed foods like candy and potato chips. I would also encourage you to take this a step further and wash/chop fresh produce items like carrots and celery. This way, when the 3 pm snack attack hits you, you’re more inclined to grab the crudité with hummus instead of the more readily available crackers and dip. Also, from a financial perspective, you’ll be more inclined to eat these healthy items since you’ve already made the up-front investment. 2. Batch cook on a weekend afternoon: Setting aside an hour or two on a weekend afternoon to batch cook for the week ahead is a great time saving strategy. Also, cooking in advance makes you less wasteful since you’ll be more inspired to eat your leftovers since you put time and money into creating the finished product. 3. Carry healthy snacks with you: As long as you do a little planning ahead of time, it is quite easy to prevent unhealthy snacking on the go; think “spur of the moment” bagels and pastries. Here are a few ideas of easy, healthy snacks that you can carry with you at all times: raw nuts, hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit, low-sugar protein bars, low-fat string cheese, or dry-roasted edamame beans. 96 | 25A Black Market Issue

5. Make a grocery list and stick to it. By heading to the store with a clear list of what's necessary that week, it's much easier to avoid last-minute (and often unhealthy) purchases. When creating your grocery list, plan out ingredients based on meals and snacks you’d like to assemble. 6. Buy in bulk and divide into portions: Buying items like vegetables, grains, and even meats in bulk is a great way to cut down on cost. This will also cut down on shopping time, so there’s more time left to prepare your healthy meals. Additionally, it is a good idea to pre-portion snack foods into single serving bags or plastic containers ahead of time, as this will prevent you from overdoing it when you are actually feeling snacky.

Jeff R. Bridgman America's Antique Flag Dealer By Bennett Marcus America's Top Dealer in Antique Flags: Only time will tell how valuable the campaign buttons and banners of our current contentious presidential candidates may one day become, but there are some esteemed politicians whose memorabilia is highly collectible, like Abraham Lincoln. Americana dealer Jeff R. Bridgman just sold the best of all known parade flags from the 1864 Lincoln-Johnson campaign for six figures. Bridgman who runs Jeff R. Bridgman American Antiques in historic York County, PA is the foremost dealer in historic flags in the United States. His clients have included Michael Bloomberg and Jon Bon Jovi and Barbra Streisand, who bought two flags as gifts for her friends Bill Clinton and Bill Gates. Bridgman also deals in 19th-Century furniture and folk art, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren is a longtime client of over 20 years. “He loves flags,” Bridgman says, and Lauren has purchased items for his Colorado ranch, as well as for display in his stores and corporate offices. Some of the Lauren boutiques even carry and sell Bridgman’s rare collectibles. Foremost dealer of political textiles: He started his business at a young age, at first encouraging his mother, an avid collector, to become a dealer. “But then one day it dawned on me that I was really the one that wanted to do it,” Bridgman laughs. Starting with $1,000 borrowed from his parents, he hunted yard sales and the like, buying pieces and refinishing them for sale. Twenty-five years later, he has exhibited at almost 1,000 antique shows including the prestigious New York Art, Antique, and Jewelry Show, Palm Beach Jewelry, Antiques and Design Show and the Aspen Antiques, Jewelry and Fine Arts Fair, with a stock of over 2,000 flags, mostly 19th 104 | 25A Black Market Issue

Century, and a full-time conservation business, staffed with experts in the field. Bridgman has been featured in many publications, including the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and appeared in the BBC’s “Art in America” documentary series. Flags as folk art: “I consider myself to be an American folk art dealer, and flags are included in that,” Bridgman explains. “During the 19th Century, there were no official proportions for the flag, or official shades of red and blue. There was no official number of points that the stars had to have,” he says. You could even advertise directly on the flag, as suggested by the Lincoln-Johnson campaign flag he sold recently. In those days, people did all kinds of interesting things with the flag design, adding eagles, and reversing colors, and dropping the number of stars when the South seceded. “There were all sorts of whimsical and interesting things that people did that make 19th Century examples some of the best American folk art that there is,” he says. One standout currently in his inventory is a rare 27-star flag, commemorating the State of Florida joining the Union. The circa-1845 textile is priced at $125,000. “It’s extraordinarily rare,” says Bridgman. In the 19th Century, because the U.S. was adding states so quickly, he explains, some starcounts got overlooked by flag makers. Online sales growth: His business has grown, and he now attends roughly one show per month. “The business has changed,” Bridgman explains. “Fairs are no longer the most important part of the picture, but they’re still critical to get in front of people. Nowadays, a lot of goods are sold online." jeffbridgman.com antiquescouncil.com

The Art of Annette Shattering the Cinderella Stereotype

W

By David Koteles

hen asked why she writes, author Annette Alicanti explains with sincerity, “When I write, I can be anyone I want.” She adds, “I have an inexplicable, uncontrollable urge to write.” She then breaks into a hearty laugh, perhaps realizing how passionate she sounds. And producers are taking note of her passion and her talent. Having penned several film scripts, Annette has now written a big new dance musical aimed at Broadway. Her musical, “The Art of the Hustle,” is based on her first screenplay. While it may be a work of fiction, it’s clearly drawn from her hard-earned experience as a competitive ballroom dancer and dance instructor, not to mention her time in the clubs doing the popular dance the Hustle. “The Art of the Hustle” is a musical featuring the hottest dance music of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that follows Anna, a housewife from Long Island, who escapes her failing marriage on the dance floor and gets swept away with the both glamour and dangers of nightlife. Much like her passion for storytelling, Annette has always been profoundly drawn to music and dance. When she suggests that it may be genetic, you can’t help but wonder. Annette never met her biological mother, but feels a strong connection to her nonetheless. Initially put into foster care and then adopted by an ItalianAmerican family in Queens, Annette’s childhood was far from picture-perfect.

106 | 25A Black Market Issue

Annette dreamed of getting out and finding her birth mother. Despite being constantly told that her real mother was a junkie who gave her away, Annette yearned to meet her. As a child, she happened to find her birth certificate and saw the name of her biological mother: Iolene Catalano. Her first clue in what would become a life-long fascination with her mysterious past. Her years of wonder soon became years of searching. An investigation conducted by a close friend delivered a crushing blow to Annette: Iolene Catalano had died. Annette would never meet her birth mother. As she was finally catching up with her past, her present life was falling apart. Her husband did not understand or support her desire to find her roots, and along with the couple’s financial troubles and constant fighting, their once-happy marriage dissolved. It was during this painful time of self-reflection, and the terrifying prospect of being a single mother to three young daughters, that Annette discovered her writer’s voice. Annette wrote her first screenplay, “The Art of the Hustle,” shortly after her divorce. Despite the shock of her birth mother’s death, Annette wanted to find out more. After years of dead ends, an internet search produced a hit. She learned that Iolene was indeed a drug addict and had died in her forties, contracting HIV 10 years earlier, just before she had quit heroin for good. What she never could have imagined was that Iolene had been

an iconic figure in the New York rock scene of the 60s and 70s, and two young journalists, David Isay and Steve Zeitlin, had recorded her memoires, together with some of her poetry and her singing, just weeks before her death. Speaking with a withered voice into a tape recorder and with Isay, Zeitlin, Cat Rebennack (wife of music legend Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack), and other close friends by her side, Iolene gave a dying bedside account of her astonishing but brutally tragic life. These memoires were later compiled into a documentary that had aired on both NPR and public television. Learning this, Annette reached out to Isay and Zeitlin. They were as happy to meet her as she was to meet them, and they graciously placed of the tapes her mother’s memoires into her hands. With her hands shaking and her heart pounding, Annette put on earphones and listened to her mother’s voice for the first time. She heard her glorious voice drive home a bluesy number, anecdotes about the rock superstars she once knew, and stories of a horrific childhood and the hardships of street life more painful than Annette could ever imagine. Born to a Carney and an exotic dancer, Iolene and her older sister, Antoinette, were both sexually abused at a young age by their father. Their mother, in shock from what her husband had done, tried to kill herself and her three children. When that failed, she fled, taking her daughters with her. The Catalano girls lived in a car while their mother supported the family by propositioning men, only to rob them at knife point in front of her small children. The police eventually caught up with her and she took her own life while in prison. The young girls, having already suffered a lifetime’s worth of tragedy, were dispersed through a Dickensian maze of mental institutions, reform schools and foster homes, where the cycle of abuse would continue. Eventually, Iolene and Antoinette made a pact and decided to run away. Mere children trying to raise themselves on the mean streets of New York City, they quickly fell into the hard life of sex work. They soon fell victim to the drugs and alcohol that so often accompany street life as a means to dull the pain of their existence. When Iolene became pregnant with Annette, she was just a teenager, already addicted to heroin and turning tricks to support her habit. Alone, afraid, and without the means to care for a child, Iolene knew she had to give up her baby. Despite the odds, Iolene and Antoinette grew into fascinating young women who would rock the New York music scene. They came to be seen and appreciated for the beautiful, ethereal, and wise-beyond-their-years women that they truly were. Antoinette developed a long term relationship with Fred Neil, a pioneer of folk rock who helped launch the age of the singersongwriter. Neil mentored the likes of Bob Dylan and David Crosby, and wrote the hit “Everybody’s Talkin’”—ironically the song used in the Academy

Award-winning film Midnight Cowboy to capture the spirit of street life in New York. Together, Antoinette and Neil had a child. Iolene was a hauntingly soulful singer in the style of Janis Joplin who had a following among the cognoscenti in the Village and the Lower East Side. Sadly, her heroin addiction would hold her back from achieving larger notoriety and true greatness. Nonetheless, the Catalano sisters became fixtures in the rock scene. They can be seen on YouTube in a video with Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Jimmy Hendricks, and Jerry Garcia, as the legendary rock stars wait to be flown to the now infamous 1969 concert known as the Altamont Free Concert, a day Rolling Stone called, “rock and roll's all-time worst day… when everything went perfectly wrong.” Surviving those turbulent years, Iolene continued her exciting, on the edge lifestyle of music, musicians, and hard drugs, until the drugs eventually won. Iolene was back on streets, scrounging to find her next fix. In later years however, Iolene conquered her addiction and mentored many young women, helping them to reclaim their lives from the vicious cycle of sexual abuse, drug addiction and life on the streets. She was a wise and charismatic figure who was deeply loved and greatly admired by all who knew her. If you’re thinking all of this should be a movie, you’re right. Annette has written a film script of her mother’s brief, tragic life. It’s titled “All the Way Broken,” and it has attracted the interest of several film producers. It’s given her the chance to really understand and get to know the mother she never met. “There are definite parallels in our lives,” admits Annette. Both were robbed of their innocence, battled demons, and searched for love their entire lives. While Iolene’s life never played out the way she hoped and ended tragically, Annette’s life is the ultimate comeback story, with a thriving film and Broadway career on the verge of making her a household name. “Annette’s writing is the antithesis of the Cinderella myth. She tells emotionally honest stories about realistic women who lead imperfect lives. That’s what makes her writing so powerful and unique,” says longtime friend and confidant, Marina Paredo. Having completed her musical adaptation of “The Art of the Hustle,” an industry reading of the show was produced and enthusiastically received. Plans are currently in the works to bring the show to full production on Broadway. Annette has also written a psychological thriller called “Betrothed” and is currently at work on her latest screenplay, titled “Online.” She describes her work as “raw,” and to no one’s surprise she says she doesn’t depict “Cinderella stories.” Annette explains, “I write true to life stories about real people hoping to find love and beauty in the midst of the tragedies that happen to people in real life.” Again, Annette laughs with enthusiasm and says with a shrug, “Writers tend to tell the stories they know.” And Annette has many more stories to tell. A Chance Encounter with a Homeless Man and Actor Robert De Niro By W.A Muller

down, Larry stared as he walked away. The man’s face became etched into Larry’s memory.

We decided to revisit Larry and share his wonderful successes.

This encounter led to the drawing ‘Old Man’ and ‘Old Man 2.’

As more and more collectors became owners of his The Myths of Man series of portrait realism drawings and paintings, he is pleased to share his 2015 success stories.

Fame for ‘Old Man’ What a year for the drawing! ‘Old Man’ won the Salmagundi/AAPL Presidents Award at the highly respected Salmagundi Galleries 87th Grand National Exhibition in New York City. In addition, it won Honorable Mentions in two prestigious gallery shows, took second place in the Nationwide American Artists Professional Future Art Masters Awards, was shown at the Untitled Gallery at Miami Art Basel, and was simultaneously featured as the cover of ArtVoices magazine along with a four page article on Larry.

hat a wonderful year this has been for Larry Aarons, our 2015 profile of the Long Island artist. larryaaronsart.com

In January, Larry was named as ‘One of the top artists to watch in 2015.’ Let’s see what has gone on since then. 2015 started off for Larry as he strolled the beachfront streets of Santa Monica, CA. There he saw a homeless man whose face Larry could not stop staring at. He approached the old man and asked if could sketch him. Although hesitant, he said only for a few minutes. The minutes passed, and as the old man got up to leave, Larry offered him some money. Turned 108 | 25A Black Market Issue

Yes, there is more! The United Nations in NYC interviewed Larry about his art, ‘The Myths of Man.’ ‘Old Man,’ along with other award winning portraits, was featured. See it on YouTube; type in Larry Aarons.

FAMOUS – Hollywood: The Greatest Myth of All Not only is Larry an artist, but he is also a part-time actor. At a recent movie shoot, he was on the set with Academy Award winner Robert De Niro. The chance encounter led Larry to seek out Mr. De Niro’s business manager so he could show a drawing he did of Mr. De Niro.

Larry has always been sensitive to the world around us. He created a special series of assemblages titled “Defense of the Species.” DOTS raises consciousness about the beauty and the right of all creatures to exist on our planet. The art is controversial, and can be checked out on his website tab Defense of the Species. It’s worth the time.

Once the manager saw it, he rushed to show Mr. De Niro. De Niro was taken by the likeness, and set a time to meet with the artist. As they say,” the rest is history.” His drawing is now in Mr. De Niro’s collection.

The assemblages are a stark combination of reclaimed animal skulls with defense masks, awaking the viewer’s inner spirit to feel the need to protect all species. DOTS will be shown at NYC Art Scope Show in March. He actually produced a book on this art so check it out contact Larry. A percent of sales will go to WWF.

After all this we’re exhausted. This didn’t include the portrait commissions he’s done. Larry definitely was the one to watch in 2015!

Larry just found out that he is going to part of a major art show in Marbella, Spain this summer. I think we want to go along to cover it.

What a year! So what’s coming for 2016? The first quarter of the year is already busy. Larry just finished a new series: The Myths of Art Deco. And Scarf Dancer a new pastel drawing is already in a show in Naples Fla.

Good luck Larry with everything! We’ll catch-up again soon.

He loves doing portraits for people. He has been included in the new book “101 Contemporary Artists.”

Larry supports our military and donates a percentage of his art sales to the US Navy Seal Foundation.

Jackie's Joke Box Follow Jackie on Twitter for a daily joke! @JackieMartling A lawyer parks his brand new Lexus in front of his office, and as he gets out, a truck passes too close and completely tears off the door on the driver's side. When a cop pulls up, and the lawyer's screaming, "My Lexus! My Lexus is ruined! It'll never be the same! It'll never be the same!" The cop shakes his head in disgust and says, "I can't believe how materialistic you lawyers are. You're so focused on your possessions that you don't notice anything else. You don't even realize that your left arm is missing from the elbow down. It must have been torn off when the truck hit you." The lawyer says, "No! Nooo! Where's my Rolex?" A lion's walking along in the jungle. He goes up to an ostrich and says, "Argh! Who's the king of the jungle?" The ostrich says, "You are, lion." The lion goes up to a hyena and says, "Argh! Who's the king of the jungle?" The hyena says, "You are, lion." The lion goes up to an elephant and says, "Argh! Who's the king of the jungle?" The elephant smacks him with his trunk, picks him up, twirls him around over his head a few times, smashes! him into a tree and tosses him thirty feet. The lion gets up and says, "Sheesh. You don't have to get all pissed off just because you don't know the answer."   A guy’s on the kitchen floor with his neighbor’s wife when they hear a car pull into the driveway. She says, "That's my husband." The guy says, "Where's the back door?" She says, "We don't have a back door." He says, "Where would you like one?" 120 | 25A Black Market Issue
