Valentine Dinner and Dance The first major event of the year Valentine Dinner and Dance was held on February 12, 2012 at Long Island Marriott Hotel in Uniondale, attended by 250 guests, including members of the current executive council, past presidents, other community and business leaders and other dignitaries. Town of North Hempstead supervisor Honorable Jon Kaiman was the chief guest. He congratulated President Dr. Ranu and the executive council members for organizing such a beautiful event and stated that he always “loved” to attend all IALI events. He further commended the Indian-Americans in the area whose contributions have made a difference, and moving on, asked everyone present to raise the champagne toast for their loved ones. The Highlights: The event started with a high-voltage Bollywood style performance to the beat and lyrics of the song Senorita from the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Other entertainment, also provided by B4U troupe, included a Brazilian dance and a Las Vegas style extravaganza performance. By way of attracting active audience participation, the cultural committee organized a competition on the theme of what else but amore! When the guests registered, based on their response to if they would like to share their talents (e.g: sing a song, recite a poem, play an instrument or tell their story) with the other guests in a public performance, randomly, ten couples were chosen to perform. The theme was Pyar, Ishq, Mohabat Ka Izhar-Andaz Apna Apna. At the end of some outstanding presentations, the audience selected three winners . . .and the winners were (drum roll, please): Mrs. Rekha and Mr. Jatinder Chichara, Mrs. Mona and Mr. Balwant Parmar and Mrs. Meena and Dr. Krishna Jhaveri. The winners received attractive prizes sponsored by Mrs. and Mr. Prasad Kambhampaty, IALI’s Finance Chairperson. Later, the guests had the dance floor all to themselves, and they enjoyed every minute of it into the wee hours. The cocktail fare and Copper-Wok’s delicious dinner offerings were something to brag about. Here and there some gluttony was spotted—a real proof of the pudding. The wide range of raffle prizes included free night stay at Marriott with complimentary breakfast, two American Express gift cards at a value of $100 each, I Pod Touch, a Kindle, DVD/VCR combo, dinner for two sponsored by many local restaurants, gift certificate from Rose Boutique, grocery coupon from Apna Bazar and free facials and cosmetic baskets from Mehak and Herbal Destination. President Dr. Ranu thanked all the sponsors and everyone present for their support.

Senior’s Forum Since May 2004 India Association of Long Island (IALI) has been holding a Seniors program every fourth Saturday of each month. This year it is being held every second Saturday of the month, when Seniors meet at the Senior Citizen Center of the Town of Huntington which is providing comfortable and convenient free space to run the program between 2.00PM and 5.00PM afternoons. IALI is grateful for the Town’s support. In addition there is no financial contribution seniors have to make for attending the session. Typically the activities every month include a nice mix of songs, music, memory games, comic and story telling, sometimes bingo, birthday and anniversary celebrations and YOGA followed by a well prepared high tea. While the actual activities are determined by the participants present at the monthly meeting, the main focus is to make seniors feel at home in a cordial environment and be with their peers. To conduct the monthly sessions we have Ms. Nishi Behl – Chair, Mr. Brij Gulati – Co-Chair who helps coordinate the program and a committed Senior Citizens Committee comprising of Mr. Ardaman Singh Madan, Mr. Vijay Dutta, IALI Secretary Ms. Rekha Valliappan and Mr. Sunil Uppal. From time to time guest speakers are also arranged to speak to the group on topics specifically targeting senior issues and problems. Initiated in the year 2000 when groundwork for seniors program was first laid, the program has since grown to include at least one Senior Luncheon every year. This would not be possible without the invaluable support and help of National Indo-American Association for Senior Citizens (NIAASC), a leading national organization serving seniors, at present under the stewardship of Mr. Rajeshwar Prasad its founder. For this year the Eighteenth Senior Luncheon was held at Royal Bukhara Grill in Hicksville on April 22nd, 2012, on the topics STAYING HEALTHY WITH DIABETES and MEDICARE when professional speakers were invited to address the seniors – Rajpal S. Chopra MD., and Ms. Kelli Singleton. Besides collaborating with NIAASC in on-going activities, IALI in the past six years has also progressively expanded to arrange bus trips for seniors to Atlantic City as a fun activity for the day, which has proved to be immensely popular. 33 rd Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner

Women’s Forum

Every month on the 1st Fridays the Women’s Forum puts together an enjoyable luncheon program for the ladies. Our goal is that the women, who attend our programs, should go home with a smile on their faces! Many times the ladies have said how they love to come because they meet so many people and even many friends, after a very long time. And they of course love the shopping! So far this year, we have been lucky to have such great vendors too. Changes for this year include new venue Mint Restaurant in Garden City decided by current IALI President Dr. Ranu and a committed team of Co-Chairs and Committee Members – Ms. Lalita Mansukhani, Ms. Indra Puri, Ms. Shoba Prakash, Ms. Rashmi Mittle, Ms. Shashi Malik and Ms. Damayanti Goklani. Also of big help is IALI Vice President Ms. Jaya Bahadkar. We have added another “new” this year; celebrating the ladies whose birthdays and anniversaries fall in the month we have our programs, with a huge cakecutting, candle lighting and by wishing them. Let me tell you, everyone enjoys this celebration. Our 1st program for the year commenced in February. We celebrated Valentine’s/Heart Awareness Day, with a great attendance of more than 80 people! With the new team and new venue it was very overwhelming that day, but all who came really enjoyed the new food and the ambience. Shoba spoke a little about Valentine’s Day and Indra recited a lovely poem. For the month of March, we decided to wear white. We put ‘tikka’ on all who came, gave them sweets and distributed ‘Paan’. The women really loved it. We also sprinkled some color on each other, did the ‘garba’ and took many lovely pictures. There was a smile on everyone’s faces that day! April, we celebrated ‘Baisakhi’ with ‘dhol’ player, Jarnail Singh. A lot of the ladies sang and danced and enjoyed. For May we were able to arrange for a singer Akshata Mudinoor to come and entertain us with her lovely singing. A blockbuster crowd of over a 100 ladies attended! Let me tell you, she managed to get everyone onto the floor to dance! Next month being the ‘Father’s Day’ month of June, we will be inviting all the men to please join us for a very enjoyable and entertaining afternoon of celebration. The program we will leave as a surprise! 33 rd Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner

33 rd Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner

Editor’s Note by Mrs. Rekha Valliappan

“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” ~ G.K. Chesterton This Souvenir Journal has been undertaken and presented to you to highlight the occasion of the 33rd Annual Fund-Raising Gala Dinner of the India Association of Long Island (IALI) one of the largest associations representing Indians on Long Island. It is targeted as a matter of immense pride to focus attention on the vast pool of extraordinary individuals amongst us in diverse fields such as arts, medicine, community service, public affairs, entrepreneurship, information technology, advocacy and others who make up the citizenry of Long Island. As you leaf through the pages, the Journal also showcases the many businesses we are proud of, we have become a part of and we have let enter into our daily lives. The front cover logo for this year 2012 is the “WHEEL”. It bears the tri-colors of the flags of USA (red-white-blue) and India (orange-white-green) in alternating spokes or cogs. It is meant to convey the forging of two largest world democracies – U.S.A & India, the unity that is shared and the continuing giant strides taken forward as the wheels turn in the road ahead. To remember the words of two powerful men of our times : “We must be the great arsenal of democracy,” spoke Franklin D. Roosevelt. In a different context and a different time and more than a thousand miles away Mahatma Gandhi had this to say : “The spirit of democracy cannot be imposed from without. It has to come from within.” While we congratulate all those honored at the podium this evening for their exemplary contributions for which they received well deserved recognition among their peers, our heartfelt and sincere thanks extend to each and everyone of you – patrons, sponsors, all advertisers and attendees who by your participation made yourselves so much a part of this Journal and without whose support our Annual Souvenir Journal would not have been possible. Thank you wholeheartedly for your strong, committed and sustained support. If we have been in any way remiss in what we have produced we ask that we be excused. Of particular mention our special thanks extend to……….for your contributions. We are also deeply grateful to IALI’s Executive Council 2012 and Chairs of various Standing and Ad Hoc Committees for all help provided in a timely manner towards enhancing this publication. Our gratitude would not be complete if we did not extend thanks to Mr. Mohamad Faroqui of Malak Designs for bearing up with us to meet extraordinary deadlines over the past several days. Thank you.

Dr. Sukhvinder Ranu

Mr. Rajeshwar Prasad

Mrs. Rekha Valliappan
