I D E N T I T Y

As Marc Newson worked with aboard of different design field, Marc has been working with many big name company and produced many significant pieces. Most iconic product that designed by Marc Newson is ‘Lockheed Lounge(1988)’ which made by his own hand right after he graduating his university study. Marc is now producing Apple watch while he working alongside Apple’s senior vice president of design. Marc has been keeping a long relationship withmany different companies. Marc worked with the big companies such like Alessi, Cappellini and Flos where he produced many different amazing house hold items. Marc also co-oporated with Ikepod and Apple which contributed him to design wrist watches. He also worked with Nike, G-Star and Louis Vuitton whrere he designed a product for fashion industry. Marc was a guy who obsessed with transportation as well. He designed from bicycle to airplane and even a space plane. The ‘Qantas A380 (2008)’ is known as most successful transportation design from him where he design entire part of the air plane for Qantas including exterior and interior design of the plane. The ‘Ford Car’ and Kelvin 40’ also known as another great design from him. Marc’s design is modernistic and futuristic. His style uses smooth geometric lines, transluency, strength, transparency and tends to have an absence of sharp edge. Marc also include many geometric shapes such like rounded edge in to his design as well as use of bright color (bright orange, yellow etc) in order to delivers playful image and impression. In terms of materials, he tend to use aluminum mostly. In conclusion, I decided to put my self in to Marc Newson’s perspective and design my idea in different design field (wearable product, transpotation, furniture etc.) as well as focusing what he hasn’t design. 5

First idea was designing helmet for bicycle. This idea came up because I realized that Marc didn’t design any helmet when he designed so many different transportation (Bicycle, Personal jet. etc). The functionality of this helmet idea is inspired from angler fish. The helmet contains led light at front plan of the helmet so it could bright out the road when you travelling at night time. This helmet also seperate in to two parts which is outer helmet and inner helmet. Each part contains air ventilation in order to refresh the air through the helmet. The rubber strap in inner helmet could contribute to hold the head stable too. The shape of this helmet is inspired by Marc Newson’s design style, inspired from ‘Lockheed Lounge’ by Marc Newson. The smoothly curved surface line performs

Second area that I was work on about was transportation. This idea was to redesign a tram in Melbourne. In overall, this tram design follow futuristic design as inspired from Marc Newson’s transportation design such like ‘Kelvin40’ the personal jet and also ‘Spaceplan’. I tried to design the shape in slim and also futuristic look. 8

03 SOFA

DESIGN

The third area that I looked on was furniture design. This sofa design is inspired from ‘Embryo chair’ by Marc Newson. As my research of Marc Newson’s furniture design, Marc utilized numerous geometric shape mostly rounded shape and smooth surface edge. I tried to follow his circular head of the chair as well as the back. I tried to give this Marc Newson’s playful senese design by utilizing geometric shapes as well as the bright yellow color delivers strong, energetic and playful image. In terms of functionality, this sofa has multifunctional functions. The cushion based cylincer tunnel thru the sofa could be use for sleeping space. 10

Final area that I looked at was designing wearable product. As Marc was passionate about designing wearable product, I also tried to design a wearable product which he hasn’t design on. The product was sunglasses, but it’s a electronic sunglasses so it can connect be with the personal device such like mobile with blutooth or wi fi and use it as a LED screen by pressing button on the side of the sunglasses (Google Glass). The idea was inspired from Marc Newson’s apple watch design and I tried to performs the modernistic and futuristic design by applying sharp edge. Also I tried to make the color as simple in order to contribute mordernistic design. 13

REFINEMENT 3D MODELLING

I decided to work on sofa design for the final design. 3D modelling stage has been process by using solid work, base on my idea drawing from the initial ideas. The design created by following my design brief such like using rounded edge and smooth surface line through out the experiment of using different shapes.

COLOR & MATERIAL SPECIFI CATION Experiment of different colors and materials has been proceed. In terms of the color, I tried out different bright colors as most of Marc Newson’s design utilized bright color in order to follow Marc Newson’s characteristic playful and energetic impression. At the end, I decided to use bright yellow for my final sofa design. In terms of the materials, I played around with different materials (glass, fabric, rubber matte, wood etc.) to discover suitable material that follows my brief for my sofa design. As this sofa design inspired from ‘Embryo Chair’, my decision was using fabric material as Marc Newson utilized for the ‘Embryo Chair’. I believe that fabric would be suitable material for the sofa as well. 16

REFLECTION

Through out the project, I have learnt to put my self in to my designer’s perspective and design my own product by following the inspiration from designer. Throught out detail research of designer, I have learnt and fully understood where his inspiration came from and how he influenced his inspiration in to his design. Also, I have learnt the design motto and design style of Marc Newson therefore, how I could influence that inspiration in to my own design. It was a good experience to gain many inspiration by researching Marc Newson’s design work as well as indentity of his design. Through out the initial ideas stage, I was able to gained drawing skills by using hand drawing and experience how Marc Newson could roughly sketch out his idea. Through out the refinement stage, I have also gain how to producing my rough design in to 3D model through out using solid works. As well as considering about the shape, color and materials to narrow it in to finer design. In conclusion, this project made me experience how I could respond to the inspiration that I earned from designer by desigining my own idea.
