Letter from the Headmaster

THOMAS DOHERTY

relies on you to help us make these things possible for young men today.

JIM DONOVAN

DEAR LANCERS,

DEAR FRIENDS OF MALDEN CATHOLIC,

As you read through these pages, you will no doubt be impressed by the tremendous generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends over the past school year. I am personally grateful to everyone who kindly supported Malden Catholic High School and overwhelmed by the record setting participation in the Fund For Malden Catholic. On behalf of all of our students and teachers, thank you. You have helped to make our school the wonderful place it is.

As a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School, Malden Catholic is “called to become a center of Christian concern for Gospel justice and peace.” Truly we have always demonstrated this, particularly through our Lancers In Action and Campus Ministry outreach projects. From working in after-school programs with homeless children to swimming with disabled youth on the weekends, our students live and model this ethic. I am enormously pleased to witness the call for justice as it transforms our marketing and admissions efforts. This was one of my highest priorities when I became Board Chair, and I am delighted to report that minorities now comprise thirty percent of our incoming freshman class.

Because of your support, we were able to launch into new initiatives to strengthen our programs and enhance the Malden Catholic experience for our boys. As you know, thanks to the Essential Campaign, we were able to construct the O’Donnell Science Wing with new state-of-the-art labs. This year, thanks to support for the Fund for Malden Catholic we were able to hire a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Director who will help us get the most out of these new facilities and support our teachers and students as they engage in 21st century learning. I am pleased that we have already developed partnerships with Boston College’s Weston Observatory and Tufts University. These important relationships elevate our students’ experience and prepare them for their educational and professional futures.

Malden Catholic

Letter from the Chairman

Service to others is at the heart of a Malden Catholic education. Throughout the year the boys do so much to support local organizations. They organize drives, raise money, and spend hours working for worthy charities in Malden and their own hometowns. This year, however, thanks to the tremendous success of the Fund for Malden Catholic, we are able to branch out and do service work abroad. This winter twelve students will travel with our Campus Ministry team and a group of students from St. Xavier in Louisville to serve in an orphanage in Jamaica. This will be the first such trip for Malden Catholic, but we expect it will lead to more opportunities for our boys to experience how the less fortunate live around the world. We were very excited to unveil an updated track and turf field at Bro. Gilbert Stadium last fall, as well as a new locker room and weight room. These improvements were possible because of our Campaign which was complimented by the Fund For Malden Catholic which provided new uniforms, transportation to and from games, and equipment for our teams. Thanks to these two efforts and the hard work of our student athletes and their coaches we had another great year. The football team had its best start to a season since 1997 and our hockey team captured its fifth Super Eight Championship in five years, defeating archrival St. John’s Prep in the title game. Malden Catholic relies on you to help us make these things possible for young men today. You have generously responded to our call. Malden Catholic can only provide these opportunities because of your gifts. Please know that all of the administrators, faculty and of course the students of today are thankful for what you have done for us. Warm regards, Thomas J. Doherty III

Truly, Malden Catholic High School is closer today than it has been in recent years to its roots as a school that serves the sons of our newest Americans. The communities in our backyard — Malden, Everett, Medford, Revere and others — continue to be home for first generation Americans, but their family names have changed from what many of us knew when we were teenagers. As reported in Boston College Magazine (Fall 2015), more than eighty percent of Boston’s new immigrants in 2010 came from the Americas, Asia and Africa. We live in a new reality and embracing that truth will assure the future of Malden Catholic and the continuation of the good work begun by Brother Gilbert CFX in 1932. Xaverian Brothers Schools are “challenged to understand, respect, affirm and celebrate the diversity of cultural values and worldviews.” Enrolling students of different backgrounds broadens the perspective of everyone; faculty, staff and students benefit through a mix of cultures, whether Nigerian, Vietnamese, Latino, Haitian, Italian or Irish. We must recognize, however, that with a tuition of $16,000 a year, a Malden Catholic education is out of reach for many local families. Making our school a transformative experience for local boys requires ever increasing funding support. I have every confidence that many of you will join with me in expanding your support of MC as we continue to meet the challenges presented by the demographic mix within our local footprint. Malden Catholic has had a tremendous year in terms of giving, thanks to many generous donors like yourself. The Fund for Malden Catholic surpassed goals, providing more than $700,000 in unrestricted dollars for school operations. We have also benefitted greatly in the past year from the generosity and foresight of several recently deceased alumni and friends who were thoughtful enough to include Malden Catholic in their will or estate plan. Some of these gifts were quite substantial, and it is my judgment that the real KEY to the long term sustainability of Malden Catholic is ongoing receipt of estate gifts.

recurring giving to The Fund is the heart of our school advancement effort.

Like me, many of you are “playing the back nine” and I suspect, occasionally reflecting upon what you want your legacy to be. Think of the difference you could make in the lives of so many deserving boys by including Malden Catholic in your estate plan. Xaverians such as Bro. Joseph, Bro. Bede, Bro. Aubertus, Bro. Firmin, Bro. Plunkett and others made a profound impact on many of us. Consider honoring them by making a planned gift to Malden Catholic to help sustain the mission of this great school. Sincerely, Jim Donovan

THE FUND FOR MALDEN CATHOLIC CRITICAL SUPPORT FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW The Fund for Malden Catholic consists of critical unrestricted donations that are put to work immediately to help balance the affordability of tuition with the growing cost of providing our students with a robust academic, athletic, co-curricular, spiritual and social program. Our donors show a strong commitment to the mission of Malden Catholic when they choose to make gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic each year. We rely on the generosity of those who financially contribute to MC to ensure in the preservation of Xaverian education and to provide for the margin of educational excellence that goes beyond the value of the cost of tuition. Unrestricted donations to the Fund for MC allow the school leadership to use those resources where needed most in areas such as curriculum development, library acquisitions, technology upgrades and financial aid for our students. Gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic help us keep our competitive edge and remain one of Greater Boston’s highest achieving all-boys high schools.

ALEXANDER R. VITALE 2016 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Alex Vitale 2016 Memorial Scholarship Fund Donors

The beloved son of Ronald and Robin Vitale and brother of Lindsay, Alex was born and raised in Peabody, MA and attended St. John the Baptist School prior to becoming a Lancer at Malden Catholic. At MC, Alex was an honors student who was very active and used his enthusiastic smile, charm, and personality to be a leader in school spirit. He was involved with Campus Ministry, Lancers-in-Action, and was President of the Lancer Buddies Program - helping students with special needs. Alex was also a member of the swim team. He volunteered for numerous causes, including St. John the Baptist Food Pantry in Peabody. He played lacrosse, football, and basketball in his hometown. On October 25, 2015, during his senior year at Malden Catholic High School, Alex tragically passed away from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 17 years old. He was posthumously awarded a diploma during the Class of 2016 Commencement. The Alexander R. Vitale 2016 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Alex’s parents, Ronald and Robin Vitale, to provide tuition support to qualified students entering Malden Catholic from a Catholic middle school, who are actively engaged in service in both their school and their community, and who would benefit from the quality education offered at Malden Catholic. 18

Comprehensive Campaign Exceeds Goal, Strengthens Our Foundation for the Future Overwhelming support for The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign has generated more than $20.4 million for school improvements and upgrades, tuition assistance and equitable faculty compensation. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents, friends and even students themselves, MC students and teachers now enjoy a modern, comfortable learning environment that features a collegiate-style Learning Commons, the state-of-the art O’Donnell Science Center, a new art room and classroom upgrades. In October of 2015, the Dining Hall was dedicated to John F. Donovan in recognition of the Yawkey Foundation’s $1 million gift to the Campaign. John F. Donovan was a distinguished alumnus of the Malden Catholic Class of 1950 who had a remarkable career as a state representative, counsel to the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Executive Vice President of the Boston Red Sox.

The family of John F. Donovan ’50

The many exciting facilities enhancements made possible through The Essential Campaign also include major track and field renovations, the completion of a new turf field, and lighted tennis courts at Howard Park and a complete remodeling of the weight room and varsity locker room. Equally important, the comprehensive campaign established a reserve fund that supports fair and just compensation for Malden Catholic’s dedicated faculty and financial assistance for deserving students. As The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign nears completion, we invite anyone who has not yet given to be part of the Campaign’s success. Please contact Bob McCarthy, Director of Institutional Advancement and Strategic Partnerships, at 781-475-5333 for information on giving or see www.maldencatholic.org/campaign

In December, the Malden Catholic courtyard was dedicated as “The Our Lady of the Rosary Courtyard” in honor of Marilyn Doherty, wife of former trustee, Gerard Doherty ’46. Mr. and Mrs. Doherty have provided scholarships to countless students from Charlestown and beyond, donated generously to the Fund for Malden Catholic, aided school athletic programs, and have been strong supporters of The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign, in which Gerard ’46, donated $1 million in tribute to Marilyn.

Malden Catholic would like to thank the Donahue family for their loyal support and tremendous generosity and gratefully remembers Priscilla and Captain William K. Donahue 1938 in the daily prayers of the MC community.

Malden Catholic High School held a special place in Priscilla Donahue’s life and heart. Her husband Captain William K. Donahue was a member of the Class of 1938 and throughout his life always appreciated the foundation he was provided by the Xaverian Brothers.

Bill and Priscilla lived during extraordinary times and were the recipients of a strong Catholic upbringing from their parents. They insisted on and provided the same to their five children. When Bill was tragically killed in Frankfurt, Germany in 1979, Priscilla wanted some lasting way for the family to remember their father and 24

Mrs. Priscilla Donahue Supports Malden Catholic With $150,000 Estate Gift

An alumnus of Immaculate Conception School and Malden Catholic, Bill spent a year and a half at Northeastern and then, just three weeks after Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army Corp. Bill was a World War II pilot in many locations including India and flew cargo planes for 34 years. Bill and Priscilla were married in 1942 in New York City. Priscilla, a Medford native, graduated from the Malden Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the Boston Floating Hospital. Priscilla and Bill then lived in New York and California finally settling in Huntington, New York where they raised their five children.

to help young people. Priscilla sought the advice of financial counsel to use estate planning to help provide income during her life, ease the tax burden on her heirs while at the same time creating a legacy for her husband. “This gift is from Bill not from me,” Priscilla was frequently heard saying. Priscilla considered other organizations but believed that it would make the most difference at Malden Catholic. “Providing a planned gift to Malden Catholic was a thoughtful way that our mother could give back to a school that gave so much to her husband and our father along with countless young men since 1932,” remarked Priscilla’s daughter Estelle Donahue McCarthy. Through the life and service of Captain William K. Donahue 1938, the decades of support from his wife Priscilla, and the establishment of the scholarship fund, the Donahue family strongly exemplifies the motto of

arrangement or charitable trust for the benefit of Malden Catholic such as a charitable remainder trust, a charitable lead trust or a pooled income fund.

As designated funds the estate gift of Mrs. Priscilla Donahue will provide permanent financial support to young men who attend Malden Catholic High School.
