Education based on Gospel teachings helps to build the foundation for each young man at Malden Catholic, anchoring him in integrity and strength of character as he journeys beyond our school doors.

THOMAS DOHERTY Letter from the Headmaster

DEAR LANCERS, Over the summer I had the opportunity to address the Malden Catholic Leadership Institute, or as it is more commonly called, MCLI. MCLI is a four-day retreat open to all seniors which prepares them to be leaders in the Malden Catholic Community and we hope in college and beyond. MCLI culminates with a Mass, this year celebrated by Rev. John Mulloy ’62. I was asked to speak after Mass to the community gathered, which included the seniors and their families as well as a number of faculty and staff. What I shared that day has remained on my mind. Malden Catholic changes people. It leaves a mark on a young man. This mark remains with him forever. I see it on the alumni I meet every day, and I see it on the students, particularly the seniors who fill our school. Malden Catholic makes people better. It prepares them for lives of excellence.

Malden Catholic changes people. It leaves a mark on a young man. This mark remains with him forever.

This might not be news to you. It might be an expectation that all high schools change their students for the better, but when you are new to this community it immediately stands out as something special. It is the Plus Ultra that we so often call on. All high schools try to better their students. Many succeed. Malden Catholic goes more beyond. There is nothing quite like the Malden Catholic experience, and it only take a few weeks in this community to see that. So many people come together to make this possible, not only for the current students, but for future generations of students who will come and be transformed by the Mission of MC. Alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and students, all recognized in these pages have given of themselves so that this tradition can continue, so that this tradition can grow stronger, so that this tradition can go more beyond. Thank you for all you do for Malden Catholic. I look forward to the years ahead and hope that over time I too might earn the mark and be transformed by being a part of the Malden Catholic family. Warm regards, Thomas J. Doherty III

JIM DONOVAN Letter from the Chairman

DEAR FRIENDS OF MALDEN CATHOLIC, For many years, I have had the pleasure and privilege to be involved with the Malden Catholic Community at the “ground level”—as a donor, trustee, advisor, and friend. This perspective enables me to see where Malden Catholic has been and where it is going. The future is bright, and your continued support has helped make Malden Catholic a 21st-century model of educational excellence. In September, we welcomed students into a brand-new, fully modern Learning Commons and Science Center. With other capital improvements underway, now is a time of energy and excitement at Malden Catholic. Malden Catholic’s forward momentum was due in large part to the guidance of Board Chair Ted Legasey ’63 and Headmaster Edward Tyrrell. Ted and Ed brought the school through the successful execution of our strategic plan and into a truly great future. We are all thankful for their transformative leadership. MC is a stronger, better school today because of their efforts. As we enter a new era under a new headmaster, I’d like to thank Michael Cantalupa ’79 for serving as Chair of the Headmaster Search Committee. After a nationwide search, we were pleased to announce the selection of Thomas Doherty as Headmaster. Mike’s time and commitment to the headmaster search was a real testament to his loyalty to MC. I would also like to thank Dr. Peter Holland, who completed his service with the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees. Peter devoted many years to helping make MC a leader among Catholic high schools. I am truly honored to have been elected as Board Chair, and I look ahead with great anticipation to the future of Malden Catholic. Tom Doherty brings experience, enthusiasm, and a passion for Catholic education to our school. He served previously as the headmaster at St. Bernard School in Connecticut, part of our network of Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools. I have every confidence that Tom will further strengthen our connection between academics and Mission and uphold the family-like Community that is Malden Catholic.

The future is bright, and your continued support has helped make Malden Catholic a 21st-century model of educational excellence.

Thank you for your continued support of our school. Your time, talent, and treasure make a positive impact every day at MC. Sincerely, Jim Donovan

ALUMNI PROFILE Our gift is an acknowledgement of the central role that Malden Catholic has played in my life.

TOM ’66 AND OLIVIA McDONOUGH

Tom and his wife Olivia share their profound spirit of Plus Ultra with Malden Catholic.

M

y wife and I believe very strongly that if you are fortunate enough to be successful in accumulating financial resources, you also have an obligation to give back to help create opportunities for others. To this extent, we have a particular interest in establishing paths to success for MC students through our support of The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign and our family scholarship.” A 1966 alumnus of Malden Catholic, Tom McDonough and his wife Olivia know that Malden Catholic’s educational systems are constantly evolving. They believe it is essential to improve the experience for students, providing each with a quality education and a personal foundation for the future. Looking back on his earlier years, Tom sees clearly that Malden Catholic was foundational to what he was able to achieve. It goes without saying that education plays an important role in one’s success. However, where one is educated is a critical component. Tom cites the academic rigor, the competitive nature of the students, the Xaverian discipline, the preparation received to be successful in college, and the school’s insistence on excellence in all aspects as foundational for his success and the future achievement of students today. Through major support with a gift of $750,000 to The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign along with continued generous support of his family’s endowed scholarship, Olivia and Tom are building a solid foundation and

8

future opportunities for young men and families. “The Essential Campaign goes beyond scholarship,” says Tom. “The Campaign is creating enhancements and significant additions to the facility, providing students with a firstclass learning environment essential in the 21st century. As someone who attended Malden Catholic when the school was located on Highland Avenue, where it would be generous to describe the facilities as ‘spartan,’ I am excited to see the success of the Campaign emerging. More importantly, Olivia and I are so pleased to be able to help construct such wonderful enhancements to the MC student experience.” Malden Catholic has consistently been true to its mission, explains Tom, while adapting to the generational differences of students. “Malden Catholic’s care and support are still with me today. The school is a place where hardworking families like my parents and so many parents today, can find a quality education and a character-building experience within a spiritual environment for their sons. “Our gift is an acknowledgement of the central role that Malden Catholic has played in my life. The young men we support today would not have the same opportunities at another school. MC is a wonderful place and is only getting better,” says Tom. “I ask that you consider joining with Olivia and me in ensuring the future of this great school. A gift, however large or small, helps every student Aim High.”

ALUMNI PROFILE MC taught me the patience and discipline required to achieve great things. And also, without Malden Catholic, I wouldn’t have half as many great stories.

JAMES PAQUETTE ’02 Malden Catholic as a Foundation for Success

A

lthough he had considered the advantage of attending a coed Catholic high school, James Paquette ’02 was assured by Malden Catholic students that there would be “plenty of girls at the dances.” It was, however, attendance at an MC Open House that clinched the decision when James witnessed Mr. Alan Kaufman’s famous “monkey hunt” experiment. “From that day forward I was inspired to a thirst for knowledge and a quest for science and truth. The feeling has never left me. And that feeling is why I attended Malden Catholic.”

Shadowing a freshman while he was an eighth grader provided James with another opportunity to meet some of MC’s veteran teachers, including Br. Thomas Puccio. Br. Timothy Hoey was another favorite teacher, but his popularity had a shaky start. The first day of freshman year, Brother Hoey assigned a one-page essay on the topic of whether the U.S. should pay its debt to the United Nations. Everyone in the class except James answered that the debt should be paid. After James read his essay aloud to the class, Brother observed that he had a “cavalier attitude” and moved him to the front of the classroom. James later found out that Br. Hoey thought that he would benefit from the seating change due to a vision problem. “I had no idea that my happiest and best work at Malden Catholic would happen in room 213 [Br. Hoey’s classroom].”

James enjoyed Br. Hoey’s wisdom and presence in the Harvard Moot Court tournament and the Mock Trial Team. James played varsity tennis at MC and earned his letter well after graduation when Athletic Director Richard Mazzei ’74 realized he had been overlooked. Besides recalling Mr. Mazzei’s kindness in this matter, James also remembered his class on the 1960s as “amazing.” Other activities in which he was involved included Crystal 99, Model Congress, Model UN, and St. Paul’s Supper Club. After receiving his MC diploma in 2002, James attended Harvard University. He lives now in San Francisco with his wife Claire, working as a High Yield Credit Analyst for Wells Fargo. He takes advantage of the matching gift program that is offered by Wells Fargo, which effectively doubles his generous annual contribution to Malden Catholic. When asked to comment on his high school experience, James considered, “Malden Catholic laid a wonderful foundation for everything else I have ever done. MC taught me the patience and discipline required to achieve great things. And also, without Malden Catholic, I wouldn’t have half as many great stories.”

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT I had the privilege to be under your guidance, and you welcomed me into the school with open arms and made me feel I belonged there. BROTHER

Connor Mulcahy ’11 about Br. Dan

DANIEL CREMIN C.F.X. In his own words

A

little over 39 years ago, I sat in Bro. Robertus’ office for my Malden Catholic job interview. One of the first questions that the Headmaster asked me was, “So, what do you know about MC?” Well, my first thought was to mention that my father was a graduate, class of 1945. I said to Brother that “my father always spoke quite fondly of how formative the experience at MC was. He always credited the Xaverian Brothers for being an important influence in him becoming the man that he was, both personally and professionally.” When my father sent me to the Brothers’ school in Lowell, Keith Academy, I understood exactly what he was talking about, because they had the same positive effect on me. In fact, they inspired me to join the order, and with my father’s blessing, I transferred to the Brother’s Juniorate program at St. John’s in Shrewsbury. I wanted to be a part of that tradition of formation, helping adolescents become young men.

18

Needless to say, Brother Robertus hired me, and I have been trying to live up to the wonderful example that my father and the Xaverian Brothers set for me. So after my father died and I inherited part of his estate, there was only one thing to do with it—offer students that same opportunity to experience the value of a Xaverian education. My father grew up in Somerville and went to St. Joseph’s Parish grammar school, where he had the Brothers in grades 6, 7, & 8. So we decided that the recipient of the Daniel Robert Cremin Scholarship would come from there. Well, before long St. Joseph’s school closed. As time went on we didn’t even have a viable candidate from Somerville until four years ago. So we’d like to keep that tradition of a Somerville recipient alive if we can, but my father was the type of man who would help anyone in need. Thus we are flexible when it comes to rewarding a deserving candidate, wherever he lives. My father would like any young man we select, because he—Daniel Robert Cremin—was once just like him!

Memorial Gifts A gift in memory of someone you love or admire can be a particularly meaningful way to contribute to Malden Catholic High School. Upon a special occasion or the loss of a family member or friend, many choose to create an endowed scholarship in their memory.

Gifts In Kind Non-cash gifts of property such as computers, books, scientific equipment, art materials also make important gifts. The fair market value of such items is deductible for income tax purposes. A formal appraisal is required by the IRS for gifts in kind valued at over $5,000.

CAMPAIGN SUCCESS HAS PROVIDED NEW: Learning Science Commons Center

THE EXPANDED CAMPAIGN WILL PROVIDE: Faculty Property Support Maintenance Additional Financial Campus Assistance for Upgrades Local Students

THE DEAR FAMILY, FRIENDS, & ALUMNI, When we launched The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign a year ago, we optimistically set a tentative goal of $15 million. In fact, the Campaign has had amazing success, achieving our original target. To date, the majority of money raised has been invested in Malden Catholic High School’s physical plant. We started with the basics that were sorely lacking at MC, providing a safer, more comfortable environment for teaching and learning through the installation of a modern HVAC system. We have also brought the school into the 21st century, upgrading the technology infrastructure to accommodate wireless devices for all students and integrating Apple technology into all classrooms. We are most proud to have opened the doors this fall to a new Science Center and Learning Commons. These ambitious projects enhance our curriculum and put us in a position to compete academically with the very best high schools. Why has the Campaign been so successful? It’s obvious: people like you see and understand the real need at Malden Catholic High School. Year after year, Malden Catholic makes a profound difference in the lives of local young men. Our college placement rivals that of any other Catholic high school in the area, and our expanded STEM program and challenging academics provide a solid foundation for future career success. Beyond these tangibles, Malden Catholic consistently develops young men of character, whom you would be proud to call your son and who do the right thing. Sustaining the Xaverian mission in Malden and the surrounding area is critical to making a positive impact on so many students, and, indeed, so many families. We are convinced of that truth; clearly, so are many others who support The Essential Campaign. Due to the inspiring support from our generous donors, we are currently in the process of raising the financial goal and extending the campaign timeline. Further needs include retaining quality faculty, maintaining our physical plant, and making additional campus upgrades, such as replacing the turf field. We are especially mindful of the necessity to build reserve funds to meet the financial aid needs of boys from our core communities. Malden Catholic has never been an elitist school; we have always been a school of opportunity. Now is the time to step up and expand the MC opportunity for future young Lancers. As we move into the next phase of The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign, we hope you will join us in supporting it, so that the vision established by the Xaverian Brothers in 1932 will continue to shine brightly for future generations. We need every member of the Malden Catholic Community to do his or her part for The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign. Think about how Malden Catholic has touched your life. Please consider joining us in supporting the Campaign so you can make a difference in the lives of Lancers today and tomorrow. Sincerely, Joe O’Donnell ’62 Campaign Co-Chair

A CONVERSATION WITH

PAUL AND MARGARET

CHISHOLM Enduring Personal Relationships

M

alden Catholic provides an important alternative educational experience—one that emphasizes academic mastery, of course, while also being valuesbased, gospel-centered, and grounded in community. It stresses the importance of both the common good and individual accomplishment. To achieve this balance, the school must have the resources to maintain high standards of scholarship while nurturing an environment in which personal best and regard for others are equally significant.

The decision of Margaret and Paul Chisholm to make a leadership gift in support of The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign is so important because the Campaign funds the projects and programs that are necessary for Malden Catholic to embody its educational philosophy. The Campaign also honors the legacy of this great school, the Xaverian Brothers, and the dedicated faculty who made great sacrifices for our sons and generations of young men.

“Our sons, Robert ’95 and Brendan ’99, benefitted greatly from the ethos of MC, both explicit and implied, that reinforced Christian values of compassion, respect, tolerance, and service, as well as the responsibility to develop one’s own talents to the highest degree possible. They also benefitted from interaction with teachers and administrators who modeled what they preached, especially our beloved principal Brother Puccio CFX.”

“MC strives to help its students to find meaning in life beyond professional success,” Paul says. “It fosters their ability to be self-aware adults whose lives are centered in core Christian values of love, equality, concern for others, and responsibility.

As parents of Malden Catholic alumni, the Chisholms believe that it is their obligation to pay it back by paying it forward. “Our sons profited from the sacrifices of those who came before them—Xaverian Brothers, lay teachers, and alumni benefactors. Now it is our turn to help MC grow and flourish so that future generations of young men and families will benefit from the MC experience.”

26

“It is a great privilege to support The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign. We would encourage today’s Lancers to take advantage of everything that MC has to offer, in every possible academic and extra-curricular pursuit. They have the privilege to spend four years in an environment that will give them the tools they need to make a real difference in our world. If you do your part, you will graduate from MC ready to thrive in college and beyond.”

Malden Catholic is nurturing tomorrow’s leaders. Anything I have achieved in my life is a direct result of my high school education. So…play a part, however small, donate and keep a great school going.

QUESTIONS WITH

KATIE WAUNCH Kathleen (Katie) Sullivan Waunch GC 1966

What role did Malden Catholic play in helping you get to where you are today? Many years ago attending Malden Catholic/Girls Catholic High School was a special privilege in my life. High school meant MC football games, basketball games, hockey games, record hops, etc. and was also a time to buckle down and study. It was during the early ’60s — Vietnam, Vatican II — the Catholic value set instilled in us was not just our “neighborhood” anymore. It was global…social justice, poverty, equal rights, fairness, human kindness and the ability to recognize that we, as individuals, would be able to contribute to the world to help make it a better place. The education, training, and ethical conduct I acquired during these years opened numerous doors for me and were an entrée into government sector positions in Massachusetts: high level staff positions with two Governors; Cabinet Secretaries; an international consulting firm and the opportunity to work in Washington, D. C. for then- Congressman Ed Markey. MC/GCHS educational backgrounds instilled in us the possibilities of improving the lives of citizens at the highest level of government.

Your life has taken you far beyond Malden, yet you have been very generous to our school and choose to remain connected to Malden Catholic. Why? Professionally and in volunteer positions I have met hundreds of people involved in hundreds of professions. I’ve worked with our school district board in developing educational programs; became a certified religious education instructor; participated in capital campaigns to build a new Catholic Church, two hospitals and a YMCA; I’ve sat on Boards of Directors for Historical Preservation,

Healthcare Foundations and the Ventura County Star newspaper editorial board. I serve as a member of an allwomen civic fundraising organization and the United Way Women’s Leadership Council. Gratitude in volunteering is achieved in the satisfaction of witnessing the success of a great endeavor and knowing that you played a part.

Why do you think the Essential Malden Catholic Campaign is important? I am blessed to have had the opportunity to attend Malden Catholic/GCHS and carry away with me a rich tradition that has allowed me to put into practice what I was taught for the benefit of others. I want Malden Catholic to succeed and expand its educational excellence for those who have a desire to learn.

Do you have any advice for today’s Lancers about their high school years? What you’re learning right now is vitally important…. It is imperative to recognize and appreciate the teachers and staff who take the time and make the effort to guide and develop your background and put you on the right road to adulthood.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the MC Community? I’m proud to be a graduate of Malden Catholic/Girls Catholic High School, which provided me with an unequaled quality education, memories, and friendships. I am thankful for the opportunity to remain connected and support the important traditions that are being carried on to benefit today’s students at Malden Catholic. It is difficult to speak about high school in the past because it is so much a part of my life in the present.

STUDENT PROFILE The minute I came in the door of Malden Catholic I fell in love with the school. It was a true community, and everyone made me feel very welcome and at home immediately.

TIM SMITH ’15 Developing his potential at Malden Catholic

T

imothy Smith ’15 is from Saugus, where he lives with his parents and his two brothers. Tim’s older brother currently attends Salem State University and his younger brother, who is in the 8th grade, is an aspiring Lancer.

in the annual Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Retreat, which gathers more than 100 students from around the country to reflect and act on the yearly theme of “Falling in Love with the Service of God.”

While Tim did not attend a Catholic elementary or middle school, his mother was very interested in having him attend Malden Catholic for high school. His uncle, Paul Eaton, is a member of the Class of 1972, and his grandfather had wanted to come to MC but was not able to afford it at the time. Tim was not “sold” on Malden Catholic until the day in 8th grade when he came to shadow an MC student. “The minute I came in the door of Malden Catholic I fell in love with the school,” Tim explained. “It was a true community, and everyone made me feel very welcome and at home immediately.”

“Mrs. Driscoll and Campus Ministry have been big influences in my life,” said Tim. “Mrs. Driscoll pushes me so that I can reach my fullest potential: to be the best person I can be and to always go that extra mile in everything that I do, to always try to do the right thing and to be a good person to everyone I meet.”

During his past three years here at MC, Tim certainly made his mark as a Lancer and has excelled both academically and athletically. As a senior, he will be a member of the football team, captain of the swim team, a member of Lancers United, and chairman of Lancers in Action. Tim is very active in Campus Ministry and feels that since coming to Malden Catholic he has become a more spiritual person. During his junior year, he was chosen to participate

Tim is also very proud to have participated in the annual Joey Fund Film Premier, which benefits the Joey Fund and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and which is held in memory of Joey O’Donnell, son of Joe O’Donnell ’62 and his wife Kathy. “Malden Catholic is a brotherhood, so it was very special for me to be able to give back to an organization that means so much to one of our alums. The best part of being a member of the MC community is the comradery and being part of a team.” Students like Tim rely on people like you who generously support the Malden Catholic Mission, enabling them to grow and thrive in the transformative experience that is MC.

2014 GALA

Eighth Annual Gala a Success

O

n Thursday, April 10th, Malden Catholic High School held its 8th Annual Gala, honoring James R. Donovan with the Lifetime Achievement Award. More than 420 alumni, friends, and family members attended the event, which raised over $880,000 through sponsorships and our silent and live auctions. A lifelong supporter of Malden Catholic, Jim Donovan’s experience with our school began when he was just a boy. Jim’s dad, a 1937 graduate of Malden Catholic, drove a truck for Hood Milk and also took a second job at Malden Catholic as custodian to support his growing family. Recently, Jim served an initial nine-year term, ending in 2011, as trustee at Malden Catholic and was reelected to the Board in July 2013. He currently chairs the Enrollment Committee and also serves on the Finance, Advancement, Plant, and Nominating Committees. A huge fan of MC athletics, Jim is frequently seen at school events. We are grateful that our many supporters and donors helped the school raise much-needed funds for the young men who attend MC. These funds are essential in providing continued Xaverian-inspired education for young men and their families in Malden and throughout Greater Boston.

THE THEODORE JAMES

RYKEN SOCIETY I

n 2004, Malden Catholic inaugurated the Theodore James Ryken Society. For 80 years, Malden Catholic has benefited from the generosity and forethought of those who have given their time, talent, and treasure to educating young men taught in the tradition of Ryken, the Founder of the Xaverian Brothers. The Society was created to recognize those who have provided for future generations of Malden Catholic students by making significant gifts through bequests, life income arrangements, or other planned gifts.

You can become a member of the Ryken Society by:

Members of the Ryken Society will be recognized for their gifts and receive a handsome lapel pin and invitations to special events. They will also receive news and information about planned giving at the school and ongoing gift planning services. For more information on how you can benefit Malden Catholic through a planned gift, please contact Bob McCarthy, Director for Institutional Advancement, at 781-475-5333, or email Bob at mccarthyr@maldencatholic.org. Since our founding, Malden Catholic has focused on the family commitment to our students and alumni. I hope you will also consider us a member of your family when you create or modify your will or estate plan.

I really do think it’s about challenging the students to reach or to go places where they haven’t been before, because that’s really where the confidence comes from. That’s where they’re going to realize that if they can do it here, they can do it elsewhere. Cindy Jacobs, Director of Guidance

ANNUAL FUND

T

he Fund for Malden Catholic is part of a strategic advancement effort that is dedicated to securing financial support from MC community members to help offset operational needs, provide additional resources, and enrich the outstanding education offered at Malden Catholic. Each year, Malden Catholic relies on the generosity of those who financially contribute to MC to ensure in the preservation of Xaverian education and to provide for the margin of educational excellence that goes beyond the value of the cost of tuition. These dollars are put to work immediately and help to balance the affordability of tuition with the growing cost of providing our students with a robust academic, athletic, co-curricular, spiritual, and social program. Our donors show a strong commitment to the mission of Malden Catholic when they choose to make gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic each year. Support of the Fund for Malden Catholic ensures that things like curriculum development, library acquisitions, technology updates, and more remain a top priority so that our students receive the best educational opportunities our dedicated faculty and staff can provide. It is gifts to the Fund for Malden Catholic that help us keep our competitive edge and remain one of Greater Boston’s highest achieving all-boys high schools.

Class of 2014 Donates a Gift to MC Malden Catholic High School students have a long and rich history of giving back to their school through their Senior Class Gift. This year the Class of 2014 decided to participate in the school’s first-ever capital campaign, The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign. The Class purchased a new San Damiano Crucifix that will hang in the new Learning Commons, accompanied by a plaque recognizing their contributions and participation in the Campaign. The fundraising efforts were led by members of the Student Council under the leadership of President Nick DeSouza and Executive Committee members. “The Class of 2014 wanted to choose a class gift that was tangible and best expresses MC’s Catholic roots and represents the Xaverian charism,” explained DeSouza. The Class of 2014 raised over $1,000, and more than 50 percent of the class participated.
