FROM MARGINAL TO URBAN In this project I started out exploring spatial organisation and their social qualities within an informal community of postcolonial immigrants in Lisbon, Portugal. An impulse of local residents in the informal settlement, Terras da Costa, south of Lisbon, has led to a userdriven collaboration with local architects and authorities aiming to improve the resident‘s living conditions. Together they have started planning the relocation of residents from the informal settlement to the neighbouring city.
„How to sustain social structures crucial to a community, while encouraging integration through VISIBLE housing and ACCESSABLE circulation?“
This project aims to add a focus on communal spaces as a crucial element, when relocating residents from marginal to urban territory.

TERRAS DA COSTA Terras da Costa hosts 90 families living in self-built dwellings hidden among agricultural fields sustaining most residents with work. The community relieves the pressure of hard workloads and low income through social structures such as extended family clusters helping each other with child care, food production and cooking. Paths, court yards and the community kitchen are crucial common spaces to sustain everyday life.

KITCHENS LINKED TO OUTDOOR GATHERINGS The organisation of the settlement is a result of extensions made over the past 40 years. A closer analysis of housing plans shows how kitchens are a core element of the infrastructure in the settlement. Kitchens are positioned in the front of each house opening up towards the circulation through the settlement. They form the threshold between private interior and common exterior spaces.

VISIBLE AND ACCESSABLE The chosen site for relocation is situated in the southern neighbourhood of the city. The site itself was once a residential area. Today it is an abandoned site with spontaneous vegetation serving as a threshold between the southern neighbourhood and the public coastline of the city. The infrastructure of roads and foot paths for access are already in place and in use today. Re-introducing housing on this site brings a potential to rethink the relation between local areas and the public coastline.
My thinking was that filling in a desolate block in an otherwise dense area of the city, would enefit the city as a whole. The site’s typology and vegetation offer ground for more private pockets to accommodate a new resdential part of the existing southern neighbourhood.
The site was a residential site for fishermen from the southern neighbourhood. 14
Fishermen were relocated in the 1960’s leaving a circulation of paths.
The site became a threshold between public tourism and the private neighbourhood.

A COMMON PUBLIC FRONT When designing a new residential area for relocated residents from Terras da Costa the relation between public and private spaces was a main concern. With reference to the traditional Roman aquaducts in the Portuguese landscape, an elevated service duct runs along the coastal road. Services for housing run inside the elevated construction, which provides a shaded walkway connected to the new housing. Alternate public and semi-private streets add peripherated views through the housing.
Excerpt of model, originally built in 1:500
Alongside the shaded walkway are public programmes such as barbers, bars and a street kitchen. This way the city’s promenade continues as part of the southern neighbourhood.

CIRCULATION AS COMMON SPACE FOR GATHERING AND NEW ENCOUNTERS Spaces, which enhance community gatherings are crutial, when designing for socially and economically vulnurable groups in society. The emphasis of this project lies on the planning of spaces in which informal social gatherings can continue to exist, while a more accessable circulation ensures new relations to the surrounding city. All streets are open towards coast and existing neighbourhood with arched entrances and vegetation as thresholds between new and existing.
Sketch of connections
The housing is connected to the shaded walkway providing amenities and a public front.
Each family is provided with a housing core with the possibility to expand vertically over time as needs might change.

Housing is stepped along the site’s existing slope. With reference to Terras da Costa’s organisation, kitchens face the shared space between buildings. These form steps and large landings and can be occupied by residents for social affairs and shared everyday tasks.

AN EXPERIMENTAL BAMBOO LEARNING SPACE IN A DIVERSE LANDSCAPE
Cocoon is a space for teaching and exhibiting projects to visitors of the agriculture centre, Krishi Vigyan Kendra in South India. Krishi Vigyan Kendra is surrounded by rice fields, trees and endless species of plants. The landscape surrounding the Cocoon was programmed to connect the new bamboo building with the existing farm buildings through green corridors framing the different plants on the site.

Cocoon is constructed of local materials from the area around Trichy. The bamboo structure is constructed on a granite plinth with different levels to accommodate different programmes. It allows natural ventilation and adapts to the local climate. On the South side of the site we built an earth brick construction with access to a compost toilet including waste water cleaning basin and a toilet for both women and men.

A CULTURAL JOURNEY THROUGH NATURE A rethinking of the historical bunkers from the 2nd Word War allows locals and tourists to experience the exceptional landscape on the west coast of Denmark in a new way. Each bunker is re-interpreted in relation to it‘s form, function and contextual landscape to serve particular experiences for visitors. Each invention is constructed with minimal impact on the existing structures to respect the natural experience of the historical traces.

Flagship Shelters was initially designed by Superflex, supervised by KWY before the final design and construction by Colectivo Warehouse and Eurostand. The pavilions are designed to mimic three of the most exclusive and prominent flagship brand stores in Tokyo.
38
These modifications of famous fashion brands‘ flagship stores are not a celebration of the fashion industry. The modifications were downscaled and built out of cheap materials, commenting on issues such as consumption, social injustice and how to prioritise financial and social resources. For Roskilde Festival 2016 three of the Flagship Shelters were built in shed-size structures to function as recreational VIP-lounges for the bottle and refund collectors during the festival. The lounges were offering food, shelter, internet and electricity for those attending the festival under the worst circumstances.

Trafaria, Portugal Colectivo Warehouse (Ricardo morais | Malin Mohr) Furniture design | Technical Drawing | Construction Workshop Tutoring | Community Involvement A project developed in collaboration with Ricardo Morais, Colectivo Warehouse. This project became part of the municipality’s plan of revitalising the town through local engagement. We collaborated with the library staff, the architect connected to the municiality and the local users. We were asked to transform an existing space, on the town’s main square, to be used by elderly and children. Biblioteca Trafaria also serves as the local cultural centre, community space of the Union of Parishes. They host several public events, screenings and collaborations with different associations through social interventions and local entertainment. I was responsible for the design of the different furniture peaces from first sketches to technical construction drawings. During the construction workshop I was one of two tutors responsible for teaching wood construction and furniture making to volunteers and collaborate with carpenters, the library staff, architects and volunteers.

EXHIBITED PERFORMANCE
DIALOGUE BETWEEN BUILDING AND PEOPLE; BACHELOR PROJECT
2014
Bachelor Project Aarhus School of Architecture Unit D Collaborative project with Anette Vintervold Site location: Prora, RĂźgen, Germany
Spanning 4,5 km along the coast of Prorer Wiek between the vacation destination, Binz and the seaport Sassnitz, RĂźgen Germany, the Nationalistic intended beach resort, Prora appears as a trace of man-made historical events. With a combined fine arts and performance centre we add a new step to the eventful timeline of the existing building, Prora. The project raises the question: when is art exhibited, and when is it performed? The brief said to transform the abandoned, intensional nazi vacation centre, Prora, into an extension of the University of Arts in Berlin. In a group of two, we were asked to work with the combination of two art forms as a foundation for the strategy of transformation.

An added rail structure with flexible canvas walls is attached to the existing concrete grid, creating a variety of different sized flexible spaces. The spaces in between can be created through piviting the canvases. These include a double wooden frame. The outer frame is directly attached to the rail and enables the canvas to pivit. The inner frame enables the user to attach different materials as a wall, depending on the use.

A HOUSE FOR MUSIC A NEW SEAMUS ENNIS CULTURAL CENTRE IN THE NAUL, IRELAND 2013
Exchange semester project University College Dublin, Architecture Department Richview
Seamus Ennis Cultural Centre A combination of several briefs led to a project where individual research was transformed into a proposal for a new cultural centre with performance spaces for traditional Irish music, completed as a group work. Integrating the slope of the site through a core path through the planned area, connects the eastside, towards the main road through the village, and the back road towards the forest and the church towards west. Curved, solid walls of concrete compliment the shape of the planned area, while connecting the continuous circulation inside and outside. The aim was to let the shape of both the building‘s exterior and interior circulation path create a natural flow and hereby connect all the programs to one centre curve.
