Note from the President By Richard Pikesley, President The New English Art Club’s Annual Exhibition is a joyous mix of colour, light and good drawing. Right from its beginning in 1885 established artists have shown their very best work alongside first time exhibitors taking their first steps. In the forty-four years that I’ve been a member I’ve seen many fine painters at the height of their powers move us with their paint. Just coloured mud spread on cloth or board, and yet there’s something about painting that can bypass words and go straight to the heart. This year’s exhibition gives us a chance to remember two of our finest, with a memorial
group of extraordinary power by the late Bernard Dunstan RA NEAC whose membership from 1949 takes us back to a handshake with those founding members. We are also deeply indebted to the late Mrs Vera Bowyer, who chose to celebrate the memory of her late husband William Bowyer RA NEAC by generously giving us a prize to award for fine drawing. In addition to The Bowyer Drawing Prize there are many others and we are very grateful to all those who generously award these prizes and for the support of all of our donors and Friends.
We’re not just about the Annual Exhibition . . . The New English Art Club has a year-round programme of exhibitions, classes, workshops and other events. The best way to stay up-to-date is to sign up for our regular email newsletters, featuring: • Exclusive artist interviews • Updates on classes and workshops • Members’ exhibitions around the country
To subscribe, visit www.newenglishartclub.co.uk
The Annual Exhibition is a major focus of our year but to see the full range of activities including our Education Programme and members’ exhibitions do please visit our website at www.newenglishartclub.co.uk This year’s exhibition will be my final one as President and I’d like to finish by saying a personal thank you for the support and friendship I’ve received from the New English and its wider family. Now, where are my brushes?
New English Education Programme 2018 By Mick Kirkbride, Curator of the New English Education Programme Both artists however have taken particular value from visiting members’ studios, the ensuing dialogue has simultaneously challenged, informed and reaffirmed their artistic values and practices. This is evidenced in the quality of their outcomes which can be seen in our exhibition. Here are their thoughts and reflections on the Education Programme year...
The New English Education Programme has two main functions. The first is to propagate the teaching of observational drawing, with a flexible approach designed to enlarge the drawing vocabulary of students. The other is to establish connections with emerging artists who share a similar visual sensibility to the New English membership. Our programme offers a unique pedagogic experience, one not often found in the broader landscape of art education. Teaching is delivered exclusively by practitioners who exhibit widely and share a wealth of knowledge and experience, all of whom are members of the New English. This has been a particularly buoyant year with classes held at Heatherley’s School of Art, Mall Galleries’ Learning Centre (which is also the venue for our weekly Life Drawing sessions during term time), and many locations around London. Paul Newland, Neil Pittaway, Julie Jackson, and John Dobbs have all offered landscape based workshops, with James Bland and Peter Clossick using the human figure to address colour, form and surface collage. Each year the Education Programme offers two scholarships from an open submission of portfolios enabling the successful recipients to gain free access to all classes and workshops throughout the year. Each scholar is encouraged to visit New English members in their studio environments, fostering informal mentoring relationships, and developing a creative and critical dialogue. This year we chose Rebecca Guyver and Paul Wuensche, both have responded in an overwhelmingly positive
Paul Wuensche The New English Scholarship is deceptively unassuming: it’s hard to explain what it is in a couple of sentences, but in fact it’s really quite a big deal – a bit like doing an MA, but with a lot more freedom. It’s not very formal – you can do as much or as little as you want – but the more you do the more you get out of it.

and enthusiastic manner to the opportunities offered during the scholarship year, each demonstrating a proactive and responsive approach throughout. They have in every sense been model scholars. Rebecca has used the year to experiment and search. She possesses a natural curiosity and open mindedness which has yielded some varied and surprising outcomes, pushing and extending her visual language. Paul on the other hand has continued to hone and refine an already distinctive aesthetic, demonstrating an assurance of touch with an authoritative mark.
The weekly Life Drawing gives consistent practise which allows you to really develop your skills and explore as many different aspects of drawing as you want. Although the life classes are open to the public, a lot of control over length of pose and lighting is handed to the scholars, who can tailor the sessions to their needs. The workshops are rewarding, perhaps especially when they offer something you don’t normally do. Every member is different, so there’s a lot of variety. But perhaps the most rewarding part of the scholarship is the studio visits. As a scholar, you decide who to approach so, again, you can just follow your interests. I’ve been able to meet

members and discuss problems that I wrestle with in my own practice, I’ve had very useful feedback on my own work, but equally I’ve had the chance to get a first-hand insight into the creative mind-sets of some very talented artists. I suspect I will look back on this as a turning-point in my development and I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity.
The New English Art Club is offering a series of free events and workshops during the exhibition. Places are limited, so you will need to book soon by visiting www.newenglishartclub.co.uk/events

Regular life drawing classes with the New English
For me, the New English Scholarship has been like a perpetual feast of ideas, images and approaches; and I certainly dined well. I loved the studio visits not just for the conversations and the visual delights but because I really admired the work of the artists I visited. Seeing the people in their studios, surrounded by their work and their inspiration, was quite special. Each visit, workshop and weekly Life Drawing session has been an opportunity to test new ways of working that were different and challenging. Then I tried to fold all of that into my own practice. My own process is one of discovery, so a focus on observation suited me perfectly. The voices of the New English artists who I met seem to be there in the background, nudging me to work a little harder and a little differently. Being ‘embedded’ in the New English Art Club has been absolutely brilliant and leaves me with surprises, a little daunted, more determined and brimming with ideas for the years ahead. Thank you.
Taking place in Mall Galleries’ Learning Centre, all levels of ability are welcome, with some basic materials provided. Poses vary from short to more sustained, with an emphasis on exploring the broad language of drawing through a flexible approach, and varied methodology. You can block book all twelve sessions for £156 (£13 per session) or book single classes for £14.50 each online. Rebecca Guyver Untitled
There is a 10% discount for Friends of the New English and students with an appropriate student number booking online. Alternatively you can pay £15 cash to the tutor on the day. Check our website for details of the Fridays these classes are held. www.newenglishartclub.co.uk/events
An appreciation of Bernard Dunstan RA NEAC PPRWA (1920–2017) By Richard Pikesley, President taught at Camberwell and Byam Shaw and wrote many influential books including ‘Learning to Paint’ and ‘Painting Methods of the Impressionists’. He also prepared a wonderful annotated version of Ruskin’s ‘Elements of Drawing’. He exhibited regularly with Roland, Browse and Delbanco, London from 1952 to 1970, and with Agnew’s, London, since 1972. He also exhibited annually in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the New English Art Club, and his work is held in many private collections.
Bernard Dunstan The Bathroom
When Bernard Dunstan died on 20th August last year the New English lost a towering figure and more significantly a great friend and advocate for real painting. Born in 1920 in Teddington, Middlesex, Bernard Dunstan initially studied at Byam Shaw School of Art and then at the Slade School of Fine Art, London from 1939 to 1941. An influential teacher and writer on painting, he
it out with reading. Here in simple language, Bernard lay out everything I needed to start making sense of a previously incomprehensible world. As an example, he writes this: “This is one of the eternally fascinating things about drawing and painting from nature. As one continues to work, to stare, compare and make marks on paper or canvas, one begins to see relationships which were invisible before, and which one knows very well would be quite
Bernard was elected to the New English in 1947, and became a Royal Academician in 1968, becoming its longest serving member. He was President of the Royal West of England Academy from 1979 to 1984. Bernard married the painter Diana Armfield RA NEAC in 1949 and they lived and worked in Kew, Surrey. My own personal recollections of Bernard started with a time in my art education when I was feeling particularly lost. Salvation came in the small shape of a little book about composition written by someone called Bernard Dunstan, newly published and sitting in a bookshop display in Canterbury. I think it cost me two and sixpence and I nearly wore

unnoticeable to someone who merely glanced at the subject – even to someone who looked at it with love.” He goes on to talk about the layered nature of figurative painting, describing how at its root every good figurative painting carries within it its abstract bones; I got it, and I immediately knew that this would be my life. Without the support of that little book and the later one on still life I would have been lost as a painter, but little by little it began to make sense and Bernard had given me a bridge which took me from chaos and bafflement to the beginnings of making my way as a painter. For such tiny books they went way beyond their brief, and had so much to say. It saddens me now to think that I never really told him that. Later on I found his annotated Ruskin book and still read that pretty much every year. But it was more than just the books. I took every opportunity to see his paintings, at the RA and also at the New English where I was soon to become a member. The paintings carried an extraordinary poetry within their structure apparently effortlessly, with such a tonal sense and such colour! Whenever we met, Bernard was warm and encouraging, relaxed amongst his many friends, especially at the annual New English lunch. Visiting Diana recently at their home in Kew, I saw Bernard’s studio with an unfinished painting still on his easel. On my way home I thought about their two studios at each end of the house and Diana’s presence in so many of Bernard’s paintings.
Bernard Dunstan D Resting
The sense of loss when we lose someone can be overwhelming. When a great musician passes I think of a lifetime of knowledge and instinct, heart and soul, in those fingers or that voice that’s gone forever. But with a painter, and especially such an eloquent one as Bernard, we not only have our memories but his writing and his paintings will continue to teach and inspire generations to come. As news of Bernard’s death became known, many of our New English painters have been in touch with their recollections and thoughts: “When I was teaching I used ‘Paintings in Progress’ and his annotated Ruskin more than any other books. A wonderful painter and British art will be a much poorer place without him.” - Paul Handley
“His paintings are a direct link to the world of Bonnard and Sickert.” - James Bland “What an inspiration he was. I think I can honestly say that he opened my eyes to the true poetry of paint. I discovered his little Studio Vista book on still life about 45 years ago in our tiny library in Ascot. The page fell open to reveal the most sublime still life - my heart missed a beat. I was so moved by the beautiful close tones, the touch and beauty of the paint.” - Salliann Putman For myself, I think Bernard’s own motto which heads his page on our website says a great deal: “Paint what you love, love what you paint.”
