Annual Exhibition 2017
Some people see water colour paint. You see a history of innovation.
We created the first water colour pan in 1835. And in 1842 the collapsible paint tube. Two ground breaking ideas that gave artists like JMW Turner the freedom to paint anywhere. Our rich history now continues with 96 pigment-rich Professional Water Colours and eleven mediums to provide an even greater variety of techniques and effects. Turner would have approved. See our water colour history at www.winsornewton.com/professionalwatercolour

Note from the President A New English Year... Like an iceberg, there’s so much more to the New English beyond the bit you can see. Beyond the gallery walls there’s an ongoing education programme through our classes and workshops. Individual and group shows by members continue throughout the year. Exhibitions around the country have taken us out of London and we look forward to these shows featuring different groups of New English artists continuing, with plenty more planned for 2017 and 2018 already. All of these activities can be explored by visiting our website at www.newenglishartclub.co.uk. Here you will also find biographies of all of our artists and news of all that we do including the New English education programme, interviews with our member artists and details of our prize winners, along with paintings for sale by most of our member artists. But the heartbeat of the New English will always be our annual exhibition at Mall Galleries. Seeing the members’ work coming together with those selected from a huge public submission is always exciting. Here too you will find the work of our Scholars for the year just finishing, and can also read more about their experience in these pages. We are especially grateful to the organisations and individuals who generously donate awards. Prizes such as these can make a real difference to an artist, rewarding excellence and marking hard-won achievement.

An appreciation of Tom Espley NEAC (1931 – 2016) by Richard Pikesley, President Tom’s interest in photography and his passion for painting were brought together in a book about Bonnard. The book was actually written by Sargy Mann (before his eye troubles) to accompany the Bonnard exhibition at the Hayward in 1994. Sargy Mann and his wife, Bonnard’s nephew Michel Terrasse and Tom went to the house to photograph the rooms Bonnard painted and compare them with how Bonnard saw them in the paintings. Tom got a special thank you for his help at the end of the author’s acknowledgements. The book’s title is Bonnard at Le Bosquet, a villa that Bonnard bought in 1926 above the bay of Cannes.
The life and work of Tom Espley NEAC, who died just before Christmas, are celebrated in this exhibition by a group of his paintings. Born in Aberdeen in 1931, Tom was educated first at The Downs, a progressive prep school and later at Bryanston, where he continued to develop his love of painting. Progressing first to Camberwell and then on to the Slade gave him a great start. Whilst at the Slade he won the Sir Andrew Taylor Drawing Prize. National Service in the RAF followed and took him to Germany where he acquired both a grounding in photography, and the first of a growing collection of cameras. Returning to London after National Service, Tom went to work with the Special Effects department at MGM, commuting to the studios on his Lambretta. Amongst the films he worked on were The Inn of the Sixth Happiness with Ingrid Bergman and Tom Thumb, released in 1959 and for which the special effects department under Tom Howard won an Oscar.
Tom Espley View from the Back Garden
In 1964, Tom returned to Camberwell as a tutor and over 30 years nurtured many emerging talents. Home was important too. ‘Every room in the house was a studio’, Maureen said of the home they shared in Duncan Terrace, and the house was the focus of Tom’s painting and a large circle of friends including painter Euan Uglow.
Tom first showed work with the New English in 1988, and was elected a member in 2000. In the end, having survived an earlier heart attack, Tom slipped away with Maureen by his side. At his funeral, Shakespeare’s line from The Tempest told us how it was: ‘We are such stuff as dreams are made of, and our little life is rounded with a sleep’. 7
New English Education Programme 2017 by Mick Kirkbride, Curator of the New English Education Programme The New English Education Programme continues to be an intrinsic part of the identity and ethos of the New English Art Club. Our Painting and Drawing classes which are held at The Heatherley School of Fine Art, Mall Galleries and various locations in and around London, seek above all to explore a range of pictorial strategies to strengthen confidence in developing credible observational image making skills. The other primary function of the program is to offer our annual scholarship, which creates an opportunity for two artists who share the same core values as the New English membership, to inject fresh impetus into their own creative practice. The scheme enables each recipient to access all classes and workshops free of charge. For their part the artists are expected to seek contact, and develop a dialogue with New English members, through studio visits and the fostering of informal mentoring relationships. A small bursary is also offered to cover travel and other expenses.
Jan Gaska
Hero Johnson
enthusiastically immersed themselves in the experience of the Scholarship year, displaying a highly responsive and inquisitive mindset throughout.
Jan Gaska on the other hand creates outcomes which offer a different visual rhythm. His enthusiasm for painting plein air landscape has heightened his ability to edit and make every mark count, these outcomes are always imbued with a subtle tonal sensibility. Within his Life Drawing he goes way beyond merely illustrating an observed visual fact, where the ability to disrupt and recreate, constantly edges the work forward, whilst at the same time calling it into question. I hope you’ll agree that the results of their collective labour offer real enhancement to this year’s show.
In Hero Johnson’s work we see an artist who ably demonstrates an assured command of monochromatic media. Her sensitivity of touch and undoubted visual acuity are clearly evidenced in outcomes which both engage and delight the eye. Over recent months her drawings have become more varied in This year’s recipients are Hero Johnson their pitch, developing hierarchies and and Jan Gaska. Both artists have a sense of focal point. 8
