Note from the President by Peter Brown, President
Since our last exhibition, the world has been shaken by dramatic changes that have threatened and inhibited many aspects of our lives. Amidst the dislocation, however, some things have not merely survived, but have thrived and flourished. Art – the making of it and the enjoyment of it – has remained as a compelling constant. Many of our artists have expressed a common feeling of guilty freedom, “We can just paint.” Our audiences similarly have turned to art with a real hunger during this period. This burgeoning amidst troubled times can be seen periodically within the history of the New English Art Club. In 2023, we will exhibit for the seventh time with the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath, whose archives reveal – remarkably – that three of these exhibitions were held during the Second World War. Fittingly, our annual lecture this year by David Boyd Haycock looks at the five ‘crisis of brilliance’ painters: Spencer, Nash, Nevinson, Gertler and Carrington, whose careers were dramatically shaped by the First and Second World Wars.
Looking to our current membership, we can share the wonderful news that Diana Armfield celebrated her 100th birthday this year, but that also we sadly lost Ann Le Bas. We draw inspiration from both these extraordinarily strong women: their positivity and attitude to art and life is an example to us all. We imagine Ann would have been undaunted by current troubled times. Diana similarly appears able to take all in her stride – in Wales one minute, in Kew the next, writing long letters to friends and colleagues, and painting at the height of her powers. They are a reminder that beyond stoicism, this show should be a celebration of the human spirit. An important factor in the success of the New English is the support of our followers and friends, in particular the generosity of Richard and Alison Chenevix-Trench and the backing of Chris Beetles who exhibited our members at his gallery in February. Support from both has amongst other things helped us produce this catalogue to reach those that may not be able to visit the exhibition in London. Chris Beetles has also offered one of two new prizes, both to encourage new talent: The Chris Beetles Gallery Award for Figurative Art for a non-member and the Hermione Hammond Drawing Award for an artist aged 35 or under. Visiting exhibitions has been transformed recently. There is more room, less bustle and at the Mall Galleries with its large, calm, spaces, the COVID-secure layout is proving a very congenial way to view paintings. If you feel comfortable travelling, I urge you to visit. If you cannot make it to the gallery, please enjoy this catalogue and visit the exhibition and all the events we have online. We miss the parties and the contact but the painting goes on! Peter Brown President, New English Art Club

The Slade and the Early History of the New English Art Club by David Boyd Haycock It was less than a decade after its foundation in 1885 that the New English Art Club developed its close link with the Slade School of Art. This association lasted at least up until the outbreak of the First World War and would see some of the most important young British modernists first exhibiting their work with the NEAC in the first years of the twentieth century. The relationship began in 1892, when one of the NEAC’s founder members, Frederick Brown, was appointed Slade Professor. The Slade had been founded in 1871 as part of University College London, and its first two professors, Sir Edward Poynter and Alphonse Legros, established a tradition of fine draughtsmanship whilst simultaneously revitalising artistic connections between England and France. This was such that in 1917, a critic would write of Legros’ ‘great services at the Slade school in rescuing our younger British painters from insularity and bringing them into touch again with the great schools of European painting’.1 This was important since one rejected choice for the NEAC’s title had been ‘the Society of Anglo-French Painters.’ Fred Brown (no relation to the Club’s current President) continued this close association with France. He had himself studied at the Slade and was particularly influenced by that then still relatively new French artistic movement, Impressionism. He quickly went on to appoint two other members of the NEAC as – respectively – his tutors of painting and drawing at the Slade: Philip Wilson Steer and Henry Tonks. Another friend, Walter Sickert, had also briefly studied at the Slade and was also a member of the
NEAC20 LATEST VERSION.qxp_Layout 1 15/10/2020 21:18 Page 5
NEAC. Steer and Sickert were two of the most exciting and prominent British artists then at work and Sickert, moreover, was also one of the country’s most important writers on art. It was almost inevitable that the fortunes of Slade’s students and the Club’s younger membership would become closely linked. Thus in 1901, in a review of the NEAC’s spring exhibition, The Athenaeum observed that the ‘rising generation of artists, those who are but just emerging from the schools, are year by year taking a more assured position at the New English Art Club.’ Two artists picked out for particular praise, Ambrose McEvoy and William Orpen, had both only recently left the Slade. By the autumn, the same journal was noting that it was ‘the younger men, those who had barely left the schools,’ who had been ‘the most prominent’ exhibitors in the spring – though it was felt that the young Gwen John had ‘not come up to the promise of the last two exhibitions’.2 It was at the NEAC that the work of the most notorious name in early twentieth-century British art was first exhibited to public acclaim. In November 1903, The Athenaeum praised a painting by Gwen John’s younger brother Augustus as ‘one of the best portraits which we have ever seen at the New English Art Club. We cannot doubt that the man who can do this, with all its shortcomings ... must at once take a place in the front rank of contemporary artists.’3 Augustus John’s biographer, Michael Holroyd, has observed that by 1910, John dominated the NEAC to such an extent that ‘his failure to send in work to their exhibitions itself became headline news.’4 But whilst John
showed his work less frequently with the Club, his presence there – and the continued presence of Brown, Steer and Tonks at the Slade – encouraged subsequent generations of Slade students to continue to do the same. It was thus the hanging jury of the NEAC that made judgment on early work by the likes of David Bomberg, Mark Gertler, Paul Nash and C.R.W. Nevinson. And it was at the NEAC that some of the most important works by the young Stanley Spencer were first seen. It was another Slade student, Percy Wyndham Lewis, who helped drive nails into the coffin of this relationship. His short-lived organisation, the Rebel Art Club, was one of a number of groups that appeared in the years around 1910, the period immediately associated with Roger Fry’s landmark exhibition, ‘Manet and the Post-Impressionists.’ This sudden proliferation of varying and sometimes overlapping alliances and show places included the critic Frank Rutter’s Allied Artists Association, Vanessa Bell’s Friday Club, Robert Bevan’s Cumberland Market Group, Fry’s Omega Workshops, Sickert’s Camden Town Group, Lewis’s Vorticist movement and – perhaps most significantly of all – the establishment in 1913 of the London Group. With the arrival of the avant-garde, the New English started to look very passé indeed. Nonetheless, as Kenneth McConkey has pointed out in his excellent history of the Club, even in 1920 The Athenaeum could describe the NEAC as ‘the Mecca of the Slade School students, who habitually make their bow to the public at its exhibitions ... [The club] stands for something more tremendous to them – it stands for ART.’5

New English Education Programme 2020 by Paul Newland, Curator of the New English Education Programme This has obviously been a challenging year for everyone involved in teaching. I took over the role of NEAC Education Programme Curator from Mick Kirkbride in summer 2019, so I was really just getting started when the rug was pulled out from under us in early 2020 and we had to cancel all our classes and workshops. We are all adapting. COVID safety measures have been introduced that allow some socially distanced workshops with limited attendees. And, of course, video technology like Zoom has come into its own as you’ll be able to see in our series of events at the Annual Exhibition that we will be beaming into people’s homes. (see p3 for details) Eve Pettitt, At One with Nature. Self Portrait
An important part of the programme is the awarding of the New English Scholarships and our 2019 recipients were Ali Robert Last and Eve Pettitt. We have decided to extend their tenures until next summer to make up for the reduction in teaching activities and accessibility of members’ studio visits that effectively cut their scholarships short. We hope that as the emergency recedes our education programme will resume and that studios will again be opened for visits, and that we will be able to announce new Scholars at our next exhibition in summer 2021.
Eve Pettitt, Poured Out of Emptiness
But for now, I’ll leave you with some inspiring words from one of our current Scholars, Eve Pettitt: “I am hugely honoured to have been awarded the NEAC scholarship. Wonderfully informative workshops have enabled me to experiment with different methods and materials and discover new ways of working. Egg tempera has been a real eye-opener! I cannot express the thrill of visiting NEAC members in their studios, such havens and secret hideaways. It is a great privilege to have access to their own creative worlds and to share stories and glean from their deep knowledge. The chaos of COVID has encouraged me to work outdoors much more, and I gain great solace from painting in nature.” Find out more about the NEAC Scholarship application process at www.newenglishartclub.co.uk/scholars

An appreciation of Ann Le Bas NEAC RE (1923-2020) At the start of 2020, we received the sad news that Ann Le Bas died at the age of 96. Ann was elected to the New English Art Club in 1972 and was an active member for nearly 50 years, earning the friendship and admiration of her fellow members … "What a considerable individual she was," remembers Maurice Sheppard HRNEAC PPRWS. "Her fine draughtsmanship she applied to watercolour, oil and etching. Etching, and the press, is a distinctly physical activity, requiring many hours of steady work. She conquered all and I admired her real stamina which all appears in her work. The news brought a real sadness to my heart, which we all feel - when we lose a true comrade."
Ann had a technical skill and understanding of engraving, etching and aquatint that is rare. She made prints that reflect on observation of her surroundings, all beautifully convincing in the bringing together of knowledge, technique and sympathy for the subject. In her paintings, Ann used watercolour and oil. She never had any desire to make a statement about her work, believing it should speak for itself.
supporting projects and people in need of help and advice.
In 1960, Ann was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers & Engravers, now the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE). In 1969, she was elected to the Art Workers Guild; in 1972, to the NEAC; and from 1995-1999 was Master of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen.
With thanks to Hilary Adair for her help with Ann’s biographical information.
"I remember as a new NEAC member how welcoming she was and how hard she worked on the committee for several years. She will be missed by all who knew her." Diana Calvert NEAC "She was as a devoted member and, besides exhibiting, cooked over 100 sausages on a Baby Belling in batches in her London flat - carrying them all in shopping bags on the tube for the 20 years I ran the NEAC exhibition lunch!" Mary Jackson NEAC RWS Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy. She has prints in the Ashmolean permanent collection and is also represented in the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as in numerous private collections. For over 25 years, Ann held an Open Studio with Somerset Art Week where visitors could see her work and ask questions. Ann also played a vital role in her local community in
Peter Brown recalls, "I always looked forward to seeing Ann at the NEAC Critics' Lunch having made her way from deepest Somerset. Her smiling face would accompany a jovial greeting. She was warm, sharp, entertaining and wonderfully engaging. We will all miss a very dear friend."
