Note from the President As I write this my head is full of pictures. We have just completed two days of selection to choose the paintings, drawings and prints which will hang alongside members’ work in this open exhibition and as always, started the second day by looking at paintings sent in by members before moving on to the final stage of selection from the public submission. With competition fiercer than ever to get into the show there are always hard decisions to make. Between their gathering into the gallery store rooms where they sit in their silent stacks and the opening of the show, all of those individual works have to become an exhibition, first in the heads of the hanging team, and then, at the end of one long day, on the gallery walls. Being a painter is a lifetime’s vocation. Writing in 1939 in old age, Philip Wilson Steer, one of the founders of the NEAC in 1886 and hero of the flowering of English Impressionism wrote, ‘If I had another 80 years I would start where I left off. I should not have to make all my mistakes again... I had only just got going.’ Margaret Thomas NEAC, whose passing is marked in this catalogue, began to exhibit with the New English in 1933, overlapping with Steer and still exhibiting with us in her ninety-ninth year. But it’s the journey ahead that is most intriguing, and it stirs me to think of the young painter, just beginning to make her or his way, whose work will be a part of this exhibition and who will perhaps make as important a contribution to the New English story as that of Steer and Thomas. For many years now it’s been part of the role of the New English to nurture young talent and elsewhere in these pages you can read about our Drawing School Scholarships. We continue to be grateful to all of our supporters and those who so generously donate prizes. We especially thank Richard and Alison Chenevix-Trench, Sir Ronald McIntosh, The Haworth Trust and The Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Trust. Richard Pikesley, President 5

Margaret Thomas NEAC RBA (1916 – 2016) by Ian Collins

Margaret Thomas, one of the country’s oldest working artists, has died six months short of her 100th birthday.
Margaret Thomas was born in Highgate, the only child of a London timber merchant. After a thrilling spell at Sidcup School of Art, Margaret won a scholarship to the Slade, but loathed the regimentation and separation of the sexes she found there. So she switched, very happily, to the Royal Academy Schools.
A person of firm and idiosyncratic opinions, Margaret introduced the catalogue to her 85th birthday show at Messum’s in London – whose opening had would-be buyers queuing down Cork Street – with lists of her likes and Launching her career with portrait commissions, she had her first solo show dislikes. The loves began with “a good view” in London, at the Leicester Galleries, in and the hates with “mountains (they 1949. Two years later she was elected impede the view)”. Winter was her a member of the New English Art Club favourite season since lacking view- – appearing in every group exhibition for the rest of her life. blocking glare and greenery. She further declared herself a fan of looking down from a height, milking cows, swimming in the rain, people, dogs, bees, teddy bears, old roses, trams, driving, Indian art and not travelling abroad.
She produced lyrical and swashbuckling pictures – only in oils, only in one of her fine studios, with a growing preference for landscape and still life studies.
Her floral pictures could be very still indeed since she most liked to paint the At the same time she was wholly against blooms long after they had drooped hot sunshine, painting out of doors, and withered into husks. snobbery, hairdressing salons, make-up, Looking back on her near century with television, supermarkets, committees, gratitude, she was glad finally to rest coffee mornings, garlic, gravel and after so long a journey. orange plastic watering cans.

Classes, Workshops & New English Scholars 2016 by Mick Kirkbride, Drawing School Curator The teaching of drawing and painting continues to be at the heart of what the New English art education programme represents. Our classes encourage the practice of observation, with the aim of translating perceptions of the visible world into something more tangible, but within a liberated framework. It also seeks through an annual scholarship scheme to make connections with practicing artists who share a similar visual sensibility with the New English membership.
of Art, we now hold many of our studio based workshops at weekends in their studios. However the Mall Galleries’ Learning Centre continues to be our regular base for weekly Tuesday evening life drawing during term time, and also for our free events during the Annual Open Exhibition. We are offering a series of free events and workshops during this year’s exhibition. Places are limited, so you will need to book soon by visiting: classesatneac.eventbrite.com You can follow the Drawing School on: @newenglishart
To this end we have taken on two new scholars again this year. Each were given free access to all our classes and workshops and were encouraged to visit members’ Bernadett Timko studios to foster creative dialogue and seek informal mentoring relationships. Our recipients, Paulina Pluta and Bernadett Timko, share a connection with The Heatherley School of Fine Art, and over the past year have continued to hone their already considerable skill set each artist ably demonstrating an innate ability to articulate form, structure, and spatial relationships within their images. Through a newly formed alliance with Heatherley’s School 8
