HEATHERLEYS

The Heatherley School of Fine Art Founded in 1845, Heatherleys is one of the oldest independent art schools in London and is among the few art colleges in Britain that focus on portraiture, figurative painting and sculpture. The Heatherley Diploma in Portraiture is a two year, full time course with an average attendance time of three days per week. Work from the model is an integral part of the course activity. The aim of the course is to prepare students for professional practice as portrait and figurative painters. Members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters work closely with Heatherleys as tutors and as advisors to the course and current and past students regularly exhibit in the Society's annual exhibition.

Events, Talks & Tours

By Peter Brown, President

Free with exhibition admission and membership, we look to build on what we have inherited. But these losses focus us on the purpose of the New English: Foremost, for its members to paint as honestly and as best we can. To improve, to excel in our work and, in doing so, to converse. To reach out to new emerging artists and new audiences. And to underline the importance of work born of perception of the world in which we live, and in work that is underpinned by drawing.

It has been a sad year for the New English. Alongside the loss of wonderful painters Karólína Lárusdóttir and Peter Kelly, we have been hit by the news of Jason Bowyer’s death. It is hard to believe his deep voice will not be heard echoing the gallery walls during this year’s exhibition. We will always be indebted to Jason for the work he did for the Club, so long being at its centre, particularly in his role as President and founder of the New English Drawing School. We are so fortunate that Karólína, Jason and Peter have left us the incredible legacy of their work – a small taste of which features on their memorial walls at the exhibition. Another loss to the New English this year has been longtime supporter and companion, the late Sir Ronald McIntosh, to whom the society owes so much, and whose kindness will not be forgotten. It is hard to move on to talk of plans for Sarah Spencer’s and my new tenure: the hopes we have for the Club and how, with the committee

In doing this, we – the Club – bring with us our esteemed deceased membership. That work from which we have come, as we endeavour to forge forward, to develop new ways of seeing and to hunt out new talent – wherever it may be. This year we are reinstating the New English Annual Lecture with James Russell’s “Ravilious & Bawden: An Artistic Friendship”, sponsored by Panter & Hall. We are also reintroducing the sketchbook cabinets to give an insight into the working methods of our members. We have a panel discussion on drawing, member tours and even music inspired by the exhibition. We are so grateful to all our supporters and to everyone involved in making the exhibition happen: exhibiting artists, prize-givers, friends, sponsors, donors, the Mall Galleries team, and – of course – everyone who visits. And don’t forget, there’s more to the New English Art Club than the Annual Exhibition. New English Education Programme 2019 By Mick Kirkbride, Curator of the New English Education Programme First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to Jason Bowyer who was recently taken from us far too early in life. Amongst his many legacies, he was the founder of the New English Drawing School. His vision, passion for drawing, and infectious enthusiasm for teaching placed the Drawing School at the core of what the New English represents, and continues to represent. Nowadays the Drawing School has evolved into the New English Education Programme. Our classes and workshops cover a range of image making skills including painting, drawing, mixed media and printmaking. Our aim is to encourage flexibility, broadening our students’ understanding of observational scrutiny, and equipping all levels for the challenges they might encounter when trying to make a coherent image.

each artist responding differently throughout the year. Gabriella’s journey has not been about radical change or shift, but more about a reaffirmation and honing of what is already a cohesive visual language. Her outcomes constantly demonstrate inherent tonal awareness, and an ability to express complex structural relationships in an economical yet informative manner. In contrast, Beverley’s work has remained open to question and change as she continues to search for an artistic identity. This has yielded some direct and often intuitive outcomes, with a flexible approach to the handling of a range of wet and dry media. Her ability to translate the meaning and evoke the atmosphere of her subjects is tangible. I hope you enjoy the fruits of their labour, which are evidenced in our exhibition.

Over the past year there has been a varied programme including “Experimental Drawing” with Charles Williams. Jason Bowyer himself delivered a “Movement into Structure” workshop, with Paul Handley using images from art history as a starting point to experiment with appropriation. Alongside these, John Dobbs offered a “Reductive Figure” day in which students were encouraged to develop a visual shorthand. Tim Benson’s portrait painting session was enthusiastically received, as was Neil Pittaway’s adaptable approach to teaching watercolour. The Education Programme also gave a free taster life drawing session at Mall Galleries as part of the gallery’s annual graduate exhibition FBA Futures. I would like to thank all members who have contributed over the past year, and special thanks to Heatherley School

of Fine Art for providing us with an outstanding venue at no charge, not only for workshops but also weekly life drawing sessions held during term time. Each year the Education Programme offers two scholarships selected from an open submission of portfolios. The successful applicants are given free access to all our classes and workshops, and are encouraged to establish informal mentoring relationships with the New English membership. Visiting members in their studio environments is seen as an integral part of the scholarship experience. This year’s recipients were Gabriella Marchini and Beverley Isaacs,

creative world, and sharing with me their own experiences and being given advice, has all been very helpful.

Being granted the NEAC Scholarship has felt a little like doing a self-directed MA in observational drawing. Through experimenting freely at the excellent weekly life drawing classes, having the chance to work in other ways on the workshops, as well as the encouragement I received at the 1-1 mentoring sessions with NEAC artists, I have been able to investigate, reflect on my process, and consolidate my work.

The days where I painted on the streets was fantastic, as it’s something I don’t usually do. It was really interesting seeing some of the members in their element, and was great fun painting with them. Very mind opening. One of the first artists I went to visit asked me what I was expecting from this opportunity, of being rewarded a scholarship...

Halfway through the Scholarship I had to move out of my live/work studio in London… so I made the choice to spend the few months inbetween studios in Mexico, where I continued to put into practice the things I had learned. In the middle of February, during a visit to a remote laguna on the coast of Oaxaca, I found myself amongst a community of fishermen who shared a stunning natural landscape with local wildlife. With only a quarter bottle of ink, a reed pen made on a Jason Bowyer workshop, a sketchbook and a few tubes of paint in my backpack, I began to draw the local laguna life. Local stores did not sell anything as luxurious as art materials, so I foraged sticks to make marks. Suddenly at this point, with such limited resources, I felt I had a small breakthrough, which became a stepping stone for later paintings I did in Oaxaca. On my return to England when I tried to contact Jason again to review my (reed) drawings I discovered the sad news of his death. Without a doubt, I felt he had inspired me, and so I would like to take this opportunity to thank him and the other mentors who have supported me.

This has been a year of self-discovery, becoming a lot more confident and determined. I have definitely put myself out there as an artist. The only negative aspect is that the journey has gone by way too fast. It has been truly amazing. Thank you. Beverley Isaacs Casa de Augustin

Gabriella Marchini Becoming a NEAC scholar has allowed me to go on an amazing experience this year. Leaving the comfort zone of my own studio and daily habits, and allowing myself to try new experiences, has been a great journey. Attending regular life drawing classes and workshops, all led by different artists, has taught me to experiment with various approaches and techniques. The trips I’ve made to visit some of the NEAC members have been really inspiring experiences, and definitely enjoyable ones as well. Being allowed into their homes and seeing their own

An appreciation of Jason Bowyer PPNEAC PS RP (1957–2019) By Claire Ireland

In the Dunes

Jason was a key figure within the New English Art Club. In 1993, he founded the NEAC Drawing School, which he always championed, fuelled by an obsession and a great passion for drawing. He was always at the centre of the Club, a vocal and passionate contributor at committee meetings throughout the years. He became President in 2008, until 2013. Jason Bowyer was born in Chiswick in 1957. He studied Foundation and BA Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art. He then completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Painting at the Royal Academy Schools. Despite his childhood desire to be centre forward for Fulham, he became a full-time painter and an inspiring teacher but remained a loyal football fan. He was also the All England Lawn Tennis Club Wimbledon Championship artist in 2011. He went to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan as a war artist with his brother Francis for REMI, the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, in 2013. Jason’s painting was entwined with his family

life, often collaborating with his wife, a ceramic sculptor, and his son, a graphic designer. He spent most summers painting in Suffolk and it became an integral part of their creative life. Light was a crucial element in his paintings and he preferred a cluster of dramatic clouds to a clear blue sky any day. He seemed to have absorbed the atmosphere along that coastline and the more familiar he became with it, the more he wanted to bring out a more sculptural quality - linking them to the interiors of the workshops and the structured still lifes he painted back in his studio at the Steam Museum. In a painting of the wild flowers by their beach hut, Jason incorporated one of the many butterflies that would hover around and he later

The poet John Masefield described them as “the souls of summer hours.” They exist in the most wonderful places, in the best of all weathers, in the greatest of seasons. Jason painted his last works on Walberswick beach in glorious sunshine just a few days before his untimely death on 17 February. In The Guardian, Zoe Williams remarked on the sunshine this February, “I love that feeling when the air temperature is coolish and the sun finds a spot on your back, like a memento, a promise, a siren song. You remember summer; it’s coming back for you”. That is what his paintings do and it resonates with all who admire his work. “You remember summer; it’s coming back for you.”

An appreciation of Karólína Lárusdóttir NEAC RE RWS (1944–2019) By Jacqueline Rizvi NEAC RBA RWS

Karólína Lárusdóttir NEAC RE RWS was born in Reykjavik in 1944. Her grandfather worked in a travelling circus before returning in the 1930s to establish a grand hotel. Memories of this glamorous world, and family picnics to the spectacular Icelandic countryside influenced much of her imagery in later life. During a trip to the UK aged fifteen, she was treated to a tour of the Royal Academy Schools, which started a long association with the British art scene and a resolve that this was what she was meant to do with her life. Her parents were unconvinced, but her grandmother stepped up becoming her greatest supporter – paying for bed, board and materials in the UK. She studied at the Sir John Cass School of Art and the Ruskin School of Art, graduating in 1967. She gave birth to her two children, prompting a sabbatical from painting. Then, in 1977, Karólína enrolled on a lithography course under the instruction of Jane Stobart, who remained a great friend. She began etching with Harry Eccleston, acclaimed artist and printmaker.

I first noticed Karólína’s work more than thirty years ago when I saw at the Bankside Gallery a little etching ‘Angel Speaks to Woman’ – magical in feeling and beautifully drawn. I bought it, and through it I met Karólína, who became a good friend. Karólína introduced me and my daughter Sophia to Iceland. She lent us her beautiful flat in Reykjavik to stay in and gave us introductions to her friends and family. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with the country. My work gained a dimension, and Sophia is the painter she is thanks to Karólína. I love Karólína’s imagination, rooted as it is in her native country and society, and expressed through strong, firm draughtsmanship.

In Iceland, I saw the stolid men and women who appear in her narratives, the snow-covered mountains and glaciers and the little blue and red houses that form the backgrounds and settings; and the visiting angels made perfect sense. Karólína was immensely kind and generous; generous in her appreciation of fellow artists and especially encouraging to young artists.

An appreciation of Peter Kelly NEAC RBA (1931–2019) By Judith Gardner RBA NEAC

Low Water, River Thames, London

We are sad to share the news that Peter Kelly died on 17 April this year. He was a member of the New English Art Club from 2007 and a member of the Royal Society of British Artists since 1982. Peter was an enthusiastic member of both societies and I particularly remember him from the RBA where he was always the first person to put himself forward to support events and exhibitions. I was fortunate to recently meet Peter and his wife Brenda at Aldeburgh where we were both handing in work for an exhibition at Thompson’s. Members of both societies will miss his friendship and his skilful, beautiful, evocative paintings at exhibitions. Our thoughts go out to his wife Brenda and the family of his two sons. Peter trained in graphic design at the West Ham School of Art and Technology and afterwards at the Central School of Art and Design in London. In 1957, he pursued a career as a graphic designer, illustrator and painter.

The Red Vase

Peter’s paintings display his mastery of light. His preference for a limited palette of muted tonal colours, occasionally warmed by brighter accents which was reminiscent of the Dutch and Scandinavian Schools. His paintings of architecture show the fine classical draughtsmanship which characterises his work. Peter painted interiors, landscapes and still life. He explored the world of empty rooms, mysterious corridors, atmospheric canals and ancient silent churches. Peter’s works are invariably paintings of stillness, of moments suspended in time. In a world of increasing pace and rapidity they offer an escape into a world of calm and quiet reflection. We all shall miss him.
