PASTEL SOCIETY
The Pastel Society (PS) is a registered charity, widely recognised for its success in promoting and encouraging the use of pastel within the contemporary art world. The Society was founded in 1898 and its first exhibition was held in the Royal Institute in Piccadilly. Founder members and early exhibitors included Brangwyn, Degas, Rodin, Rothenstein, Whistler and G F Watts. There are currently over 50 members who are all professional artists living and working in this country and overseas. Membership is granted through a strict assessment of technical skill, originality, innovation and enthusiasm. The Society pursues its aims through education and example. It is currently responsible for organising exhibitions, tutorial workshops, demonstrations and lectures throughout the UK. The Society’s Annual Exhibition is open to entries from both members and non-members. Awards are made for works of particular note.

President’s Foreword
Cover Artist: Jeannette Hayes PPS
A warm welcome to The Pastel Society’s 119th Annual Exhibition. The Society champions all dry mediums, soft and oil pastel, pencil, conté and charcoal as well as some mixed media work. Artists use the medium for its vibrant colour, vitality and immediacy. Visitors can be confident of seeing a variety of approaches. The Pastel Society is recognised as foremost in its field, a magnet for brilliant exponents of the pastel medium showing the work of leading contemporary artists as well as encouraging work by new artists yet to be established. This year the Society was challenged more than ever during the selection of work with record numbers of submissions. As always we enjoy the diversity, but not the disappointment we inevitably cause as well. It has been a year of many lows and highs; sadly we have lost three of our most prominent and long standing members, Past Presidents Leigh Parry, John Ivor Stewart and Honorary Member Bernard Dunstan RA. They all shaped the Society’s history and are very much missed. The annual exhibition is a great opportunity to see the work of our newly selected members and this year we are thrilled to include seven new artists; Janine Baldwin, Liz Balkwill, David Brammeld, Melodie Cook, Jaana Fowler, Jan Munro and Simon Hodges, welcome all! We are also delighted to welcome our guest speaker Rupert Maas to open the exhibition. Rupert is a leading British painting specialist and gallery owner, known for his numerous media and television appearances including the BBC Antiques Roadshow. On behalf of the society I would like to thank our loyal sponsors Derwent for their continued support throughout the year and for our award givers, notably the Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Award. The Pastel Society is proud to be associated with this lasting legacy that bears her name. Lastly I thank all the members who contribute tirelessly to the Society and to you the viewer… Jeannette Hayes, President, The Pastel Society

Jeannette Hayes Yesterday Pastel 91.5 x 120.5 cm £2,400
Yesterday by Jeannette Hayes is featured on the cover of this catalogue. She comments on her painting and working methods: “Yesterday” implies I only created this work very recently! However the shapes and colours are all of objects of yesteryear sitting on the windowsill in my studio… A lot of these are part of my glass collection from Scandinavia and thread their way along the front of the window with the garden in the background… They trigger many early memories of a place which I revisited not that long ago. I am a mood painter with colours and shapes forming the basis of my work. I primarily use soft pastels which move and drift along the watercolour paper I mostly favour. I do experiment with different surfaces, however - it never ceases to amaze me how paper texture can transform colours. I never know where a painting is going to take me, or where I am going with the painting. There is no pre-set path and it is often hard to tell when a painting is finished. I do know that I will learn something new every time and will always enjoy the physicality and mystery of painting with pastels.

Zsuzsi and her family went into hiding when the Nazis invaded Hungary in WW2. Zsuzsi’s father, manager of the Vígszínház theatre, was caught and did not survive. When the war ended the Russians were in occupation, but Zsuzsi and her Mother managed to get false papers and escape to France. In 1947, still in her teens, no money and on her own, Zsuzsi came to England to seek a job in shorthand and typing. She approached Sir Alexander Korda, a close friend of her late father who offered her a secretarial job, where she met many stars of stage and screen. Zsuzsi left her job with the Korda brothers when she was accepted as a student at the RA Schools. About this time Zsuzsi met the artist Annigoni at one of his London PVs, and he accepted her as a drawing pupil in Florence. On her return to London, Sir Alexander Korda commissioned Zsuzsi to make a series of portrait drawings of his many contract artists, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom, Mary Ure – Zsuzsi never looked back. Commissions for society portraits poured in, and through her theatrical connections she was allowed to make drawings back stage at the Windmill Theatre. The resulting lithographs are in the collection of the Tate. She married Alfred (Teddy) Smith, patron of the new Festival Theatre in Chichester and met Antoinette Sibley, prima ballerina of the Royal Ballet Company and their friendship led to many years of drawing during rehearsals. Zsuzsi’s portrait of Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet, is in the National Portrait Gallery. In 1968 she was elected a member of The Pastel Society, remaining so until her death in 2012. After I became President of the Society, I had the honour of going to her fabulous studio for portrait sittings, even the lunch was a joy, champagne and smoked salmon! The resulting portrait was shown with The Pastel Society in 2005. - Moira Huntly, Past President of The Pastel Society
