President’s Foreword

Cover Artist: Sheila Goodman PS

This year The Pastel Society celebrates its 120th Annual Exhibition. We are a medium-based society promoting the versatility and vibrance of soft pastel, oil pastels, fine drawing in pencil, charcoal, conté and mixed media works. The Society’s first elected President was George Frederic Watts and I am delighted to welcome Alistair Burtenshaw, Director of the Watts Gallery, to open the exhibition. A visit to Mall Galleries gives a unique opportunity to see the best contemporary work in the pastel medium, both conventional and adventurous, brought together in one exhibition. The Studio Magazine in 1899 described our exhibition with such words as ‘fascinating medium’ and ‘very remarkable’; these observations are still so very valid today. To hang alongside Members’ work, artists are selected from submissions from around the globe - the standard is exceptional which makes selection a challenging task. The Society again experienced lows and highs in the last year, as we are very sad to have lost Member Bess Avery and Honorary Member Ronald Maddox. On a brighter note, we welcome new Members Benjamin Hope, Richard Rees and Martin Goold. The Council and Members thank Derwent for their continued support as our major sponsor of the exhibition and for providing the Derwent Award and the Visitors’ Choice Award. Derwent also supports the Society’s workshops throughout the year. Thanks also goes to the other Prize Givers, most importantly The Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Award of £5,000 for a young artist and Unison Colour’s three awards. Free demonstrations and talks are all provided by our Members who generously give their time to inspire and teach; the Society is a charity and I thank all the Members for their continued dedication. Finally my thanks to you, your support is as important as ever. Along with the huge diversity of work available to view and purchase at the exhibition there is the possibility of becoming a Friend of The Pastel Society with all the benefits this brings. Enjoy the show! – Jeannette Hayes, President

Sheila Goodman Avon Meadows Pastel 43 x 43 cm £475

Avon Meadows by Sheila Goodman is featured on the cover of this catalogue. Sheila comments on her painting and working methods: “Most of my work is based on landscapes near my home so I quite often paint woodland, beaches and waterways. I’m always looking for new viewpoints to create interest in familiar subjects and this group of young trees were sitting in floodwater, creating patterns and colours that I found interesting. A contrast of vertical shapes and horizontal lines gave movement to the work and a flash of sunlight on the tree trunks brought out intriguing colours. I like to draw on location but often produce the painting in the studio as this gives me time to consider materials, size and format but this painting was completed quickly which gives it a lively appearance. I chose to ignore much of the detail and work with blocks of colour and line to simplify a very complicated subject.“

Zsuzsi and her family went into hiding when the Nazis invaded Hungary in WW2. Zsuzsi’s father, manager of the Vígszínház theatre, was caught and did not survive. When the war ended the Russians were in occupation, but Zsuzsi and her mother managed to get false papers and escape to France. In 1947, still in her teens, no money and on her own, Zsuzsi came to England to seek a job in shorthand and typing. She approached Sir Alexander Korda, a close friend of her late father who offered her a secretarial job, where she met many stars of stage and screen. Zsuzsi left her job with the Korda brothers when she was accepted as a student at the RA Schools. About this time Zsuzsi met the artist Annigoni at one of his London exhibitions, and he accepted her as a drawing pupil in Florence. On her return to London, Sir Alexander Korda commissioned Zsuzsi to make a series of portrait drawings of his many contract artists, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom, Mary Ure – Zsuzsi never looked back. Commissions for society portraits poured in, and through her theatrical connections she was allowed to make drawings back stage at the Windmill Theatre. The resulting lithographs are in the collection of the Tate. She married Alfred (Teddy) Smith, patron of the new Festival Theatre in Chichester and met Antoinette Sibley, prima ballerina of the Royal Ballet Company and their friendship led to many years of drawing during rehearsals. Zsuzsi’s portrait of Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet, is in the National Portrait Gallery. In 1968 she was elected a Member of The Pastel Society, remaining so until her death in 2012. After I became President of the Society, I had the honour of going to her fabulous studio for portrait sittings, even the lunch was a joy, champagne and smoked salmon! The resulting portrait was shown with The Pastel Society in 2005. – Moira Huntly, Past President of The Pastel Society

“My practice is concerned with drawing and printmaking, cities are my inspiration; in addition to London I have worked in New York, Shanghai and Tokyo. Through my work I want to generate that sense of energy and excitement which is representative of being immersed within the city. I seek to explore the relationship between built environments and those who inhabit them, sometimes those inhabitants are of central importance, sometimes an implied presence.

I make many sketches on location, mostly using pencil and then take these back to the studio to start my large work which continues for many weeks, sometimes months. The resulting drawings are very large in size allowing the viewer to enter the image and get lost within its atmosphere and movement. These works aren’t about one moment in time, but almost a visual diary of change.

Please enrol me as a Friend of the PS. I enclose my subscription of £35 / £17.50 / £1,000 (circle) (Cheques should be made payable to The Pastel Society)

I have been documenting the change in Canary Wharf for over twenty years. In this Canary Wharf Crossrail Station drawing I had been sketching the station for weeks when pontoons suddenly arrived carrying diggers, men and huge pipes to be thumped into the dock. It completely changed my thoughts as to how the drawing would evolve, the unexpected occurrence changing everything.”

The Pastel Society Catalogue Award

First Prize Oliver Jones Gold Leaf Mask II Pastel 57 x 123 cm £6,600

Oliver Jones is based in rural Shropshire and Birmingham, where he also co-runs A3 Project Space and Studios. Jones’ large scale, photo-realist pastel works aim to question society’s notion of flesh, provoking the viewer to analyse the surfaces which are more closely evident in reality opposed to the manipulated imagery which are flaunted most apparently through media and industry. The winning work comments on the DIY/self-help beauty therapies, processes and regimes prevalent on the internet, social media and sold to us through the media and industry. It comments on the lengths to which we are prepared to extend in order to conform to the standards of acceptability within society whilst in the pursuit of ‘perfection’.

Glenys Ambrus PS Orange Border at Kew (detail)

The portability and immediacy that working in pastels allows means they are a wonderful medium in which to capture the ephemeral beauty of the garden; that short season when everything is in full bloom and even that magical time of day when the colours are really glowing in the sunshine. If you have an idea for a pastel commission, get in touch with our Commissions Consultants and they will help you find the right artist for the job. commissions@mallgalleries.com www.mallgalleries.org.uk
