President’s Foreword Welcome to the 123rd Pastel Society Annual Exhibition with the theme of ‘Fresh Eyes’. There were many submissions of dry medium work from all over the Globe and the best of these are on show alongside the work of our established Members. The theme of ‘Fresh Eyes’ is an apt description of the rich variety of styles that you will experience in this exhibition. In 2021, I became the Fourteenth President of the Pastel Society. Former President Jeannette Hayes did a sterling job of guiding us through some turbulent times and we are grateful for her commitment and passion during her six years in the position. We also have a new Vice President, Simon Hodges, and he has been instrumental in planning and coordinating the ‘Studio’ idea we have set up in the East Gallery. This is the setting for our free demonstrations and workshops which will run continuously during the Exhibition. Our Members generously give their time to inspire and teach and I thank all of them who are doing this for their continued dedication to promoting technical skill, originality, innovation and for their enthusiasm. I do hope that you can come and join us in the newly created studio environment. There is also an Art Evening on Tuesday 22 February from 6.00 to 8.30pm where two models will be provided for sketching (for a small charge) and there will be drinks available. This can be booked through the Mall Galleries website. We are planning a repeat of our Easter Workshops at Heatherley’s in Chelsea where you can get a more in-depth insight into our working methods and get handson with materials. We have been doing these workshops for several years now and

Richard Rees St. Michael’s Mount Oil pastel 22 x 38 cm £500 they have proved very popular. This will be advertised by the Mall Galleries on their website in due course. We have a new sponsor in Caran d’Ache after six fruitful years association with Derwent. We thank Caran d’Ache for joining us as our sponsor in promoting the art of pastel painting. In addition, there are a number of other generous sponsors and prize donors who give a great boost to the Society and my thanks go out to all of them for their continued support. The Pastel Society promotes the use of dry materials such as pastel, oil pastel, charcoal, conté, pencil and crayons as well as any mixed media work utilizing them. These are easy materials to carry around and use spontaneously so they

are popular with all artists. The flexibility and creative possibilities with these media are clear from the works in this exhibition. We welcome four new Members who were elected to the Society in 2021 – Keith Bennett, Henry Jabbour, Ian Rawling and Katrina Wallis-King – and whose work can be seen in this exhibition. Thank you for coming to our unique exhibition and I hope you like the diversity and richness of work on show. The work is also available to view on the Mall Galleries website. I hope you will tell your friends to visit us and if you really like our work, please consider becoming a Friend (there is a joining form in the catalogue and available in the studio) and buy some works! Richard Rees, President

Halla Shafey Still Life with Watermelon Pastel 48 x 60 cm £1,000 I am an abstract artist. I visually express the poetry in my heart using colour, shape, line and texture, instead of words. My works in soft pastel – often likened to intricate tapestries – are informed by the warm sunbaked hues of Egypt, its diverse history and rich cultural heritage. My work is deeply rooted in my kinship to nature and connectivity to the universe and our creator. I am guided by my imagination, intuition, and feeling rather than logic, calculation or exactitude. Indeed, I paint what I feel, not what I see. I allow myself to be led by the painting rather than depend on sketches or references. That is not to say that abstraction is haphazard and devoid of thought. On the contrary, much balancing, orchestration, analysis and evaluation are necessary while composing. For this, mental sharpness, clarity of mind, risk-taking and patience are needed. By continual experimentation and learning by trial and error I believe “Works of art make rules: rules do not make works of art” as Debussy affirmed. Challenge, excitement and anticipation as the magic unfolds is the real reward for me. It is this enchantment I hope to share with the viewer. – Halla Shafey PSA PS IAPS(MC), Cover Artist

Invited Artist: Tor Falcon

Tor Falcon Yare at Cantley Sugar Beet Factory, Jan 2017 Pastel 28 x 38 cm £875 Tor Falcon is an artist who draws and writes about landscape. Walking, drawing and writing about a particular thing – a path, for instance - for years at a time. She aims to build an in depth picture of place. For her last project she published a book, Rivers of Norfolk, and showed over 100 drawings at Norwich Castle Museum and at Abbott & Holder.

Featured Artist: Anne Magill Anne Magill was born in County Down, Northern Ireland in 1962. She studied in Liverpool before moving to London to complete her degree at St Martin’s School of Art. After graduating in 1984, Anne Magill worked as an illustrator where she quickly built a reputation for her evocative drawings in charcoal and pastel, winning the B&H Gold Illustration Awards four times. Alongside her work as a commercial artist, she started to experiment with more intimate charcoal drawings based on memories reflecting her time spent in Belfast, at Greenham Common and in Paris during her studies. The rapid, reportage drawings she made during this time became the precursor to a mature style in which her highly atmospheric paintings are built from anonymous, intimate images, appearing like memories frozen in time. Her work has won her international acclaim with work hanging in the collection of British Airways, Nike, Levi Strauss, Heineken, Canary Wharf, the Forte Group, SAP as well as major private collections worldwide.

Caitlin Heslop By Your Side Pastel 30 x 40 cm £570

Maria Kaleta Magical Covent Garden, London Oil pastel 56 x 81 cm £950

By Your Side was created on an artist residency in Kent. Caitlin searches seemingly everyday scenes for beauty and depth. Sitting by the side of a pond, Caitlin was drawn to the way leaves are interrelated in front of the still waters.

“Just like ‘all roads lead to Rome’ in the well-known saying, in London, all the paths of Londoners lead to Covent Garden. This is a very vivid area, full of street performers, jugglers, buskers, singers, surrounded by local theatres and The Royal Opera. Crowd of tourists joyfully welcomes them, rewarding them abundantly with applause, delight and a small penny. The upcoming Christmas season has brought there once again the iconic decorations and legendary Christmas spirit evident everywhere. All is topped up by a gigantic Christmas tree with a shiny star at the top, clear guiding sign for Santa. My main aim was to capture this unique, wonderful moment of hope, which allows us to enjoy this magical time of being together despite the Covid struggle. Although it was cold, windy and rainy at times, I felt a great joy to draw my pastel from nature. I tried to capture a very specific vibration of this place, expressed in its colourful dynamic movements.“ – Maria Kaleta
