Cover Artist: Jill Jeffrey PS

Jill Jeffrey was born in Derbyshire, on the edge of the Peak District, and spent much of her childhood outdoors observing and documenting her surroundings. After obtaining a degree in Fine Art, Jill went on to work as a designer at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, before working for two years as a scenic artist. She later won the Arts Council Design Award to become a set designer at Birmingham and Coventry.

The landscape of the west of the British Isles is Jill’s greatest influence – in particular Pembrokeshire, Wester Ross and the Hebrides which she visits as often as she can, sketchbook in hand, to take in the drama, movement, majesty, and awe of these outstanding areas of rugged beauty. The excitement of crashing waves, the sad beauty of a sunset across hills, reflections and shadows cast by scudding clouds never fail to inspire her. Reflecting on both the emotion of her surroundings and her own imagination, Jill’s works are a collaboration between the artist and the land.

Jill has a been a member of the Pastel Society since 1997. Her paintings are held in private collections throughout the UK, USA, Canada, Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand.

President’s Foreword

The theme of this year’s Pastel Society Exhibition is ‘Pastel without Boundaries’. The title reflects the enthusiasm we have as a Society for our chosen medium.

So, when did artists start using pastel?

Pastels are the oldest known medium – they were used to create images in prehistoric cave paintings. Initially, pastel, in the form of chalk, was only available in red, black, and white. Renaissance masters, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo used natural chalks for drawing, and it was from this that pastel developed in the 16th century.

The pastels we know today were first manufactured in the 16th century and quickly found approval with many of the great artists of the day, including the German-born Hans Holbein the Younger, the favourite artist of Henry VIII. However, it was not until the mid-18th century in Europe that pastel truly came into its own. Then, works in pastel were often valued more highly than their equivalents in oil paint. To quote the most popular pastel artist of this period - ‘For its beauty, vivacity, freshness and lightness of palette, pastel painting is more beautiful than any other kind of painting’ Jean-Etienne Liotard (1780’s).

Pastel has attracted more myths than any other art medium. ‘They are incredibly fragile’, ‘The colours fade’, ‘Only amateurs use pastels’, ‘Pastel limits a painter’s artistic expression’, ‘It is no more than a sketching tool’ − the list goes on. These myths do not help in promoting the medium and are all categorically inaccurate.

The Pastel Society was formed in 1898 and finally grouped pastel artists together in the UK. Early exhibitors included great artists such as Degas, Whistler and Sickert. They were particular in choosing pastel – in particular Degas who found pastel a medium that could both encapsulate the

importance of drawing in his work and provided ‘an orgy of colour’. Yet today, there is apparently no great enthusiasm amongst teachers at Art Schools for pastel other than as a tool for developing young minds in the art of drawing. We seem to have lost our appreciation and potential of the medium at various times during the history of our Society and pastels do not now have the status and popularity of oil and watercolour painting.

However, there are contemporary stand out examples of the scope and potential of pastel. The great Paula Rego, an Honorary Member of the Pastel Society who sadly died last year, was an extraordinary exponent of pastel in her later working years. She achieved a stunning intensity in the medium which would have been more difficult to achieve in oils or watercolours.

We wish to spread the word about our medium to all age groups. Where else would you find around 1600 colours, as are available in soft pastel, ready to use straight away? Some of the qualities of our medium will be demonstrated by our members in our East Gallery ‘Studio’. This is a repeat of last year’s successful experiment and will consist of a continuous series of demonstrations and hands-on workshops for the whole length of the exhibition.

Please spread the word about our beautiful medium. We want all our Friends and followers to tell their friends that, whether they are interested in drawing and painting, meeting artists, or just visiting a gallery to come and see our new, original contemporary PASTEL art.

Invited Artist: Curtis Holder

Curtis Holder (born Leicester, 1968) is a London based artist working primarily in the medium of graphite and coloured pencil on paper. He studied Graphic Design at Kingston University and completed postgraduate studies in Character Animation at Central Saint Martins, London. Taking inspiration from intimate conversations with the people he draws, Holder’s large-scale multilayered pencil portraits are dynamically tender, emerging in a wayward series of febrile lines to reveal a sense of his subjects’ form, movement and emotional intent. Preliminary pencil marks remain on the paper as part of his energetic process of capturing fleeting gestures and emotions with sensitivity and raw honesty.

In 2020 Holder won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, a prestigious portraiture competition televised in the UK. Impressed by his distinctive visual language, the panel of judges described his work as ‘magical […] courageous and startlingly new’. Garnering further critical acclaim and awards for his work ongoing since winning Sky Arts’ competition, Holder has exhibited widely in the UK and in Paris.

The Pastel Society Catalogue Award

First Prize

Paul Murray Arrangement on Black Table

Pastel and collage 55 x 55 cm

“In both my landscape and still life paintings I try to demonstrate a delicate compositional balance of physical shape and negative space. I attempt to create compositions that develop through layers of brushwork, drawing and collage, as they move between abstract and representational marks. Pattern and collage are very important elements, as I incorporate textures and mark making as prominent features.

I have continued to be inspired by the shapes and textures within landscape and still life compositions but only as a starting point.

I look for shapes both within the object but also in the negative space and allow the drawn mark or brush stroke to dictate what happens next.” -

Second Prize

Les Heywood Between Showers Derbyshire Village

Pastel 35 x 45 cm

Les Heywood was born in Manchester, England and after leaving school, joined the advertising industry as a trainee visualiser. After gaining many years of experience, Les has continued within the industry as a self employed freelance illustrator.

“Painting has always been my passion from an early age and most of my paintings are produced using oil or pastels. My subject matter and inspiration comes from places I’ve worked ie inner city or the beautiful English countryside. I’ve been lucky enough to have had my work in many Galleries throughout the UK and have a steady client base of collectors both at home and abroad.

I would say to any aspiring artists out there to paint anything and everything that inspires, keep your work loose, don’t get too bogged down with detail, and I’ve found working fast produces a fresher and more satisfying painting. Good luck and above all enjoy yourself.”
