President’s Foreword

Cover Artist: Bob Last PS

Welcome to this, The Pastel Society’s 121st Annual Exhibition. It is an event that offers a unique opportunity to see and buy a huge variety of work that reflects the versatility and adaptability of pastel and all dry media, in particular pencil, conté and charcoal. This year saw a record number of submissions and most notably from overseas artists, a reflection of the high regard in which The Pastel Society is held internationally. It was no simple task for the Selection Committee to decide which of these submissions should hang alongside Members’ work, but we hope you agree the end result is an inspiring collection that fully demonstrates what can be achieved using dry media, whether the artist be representational, abstract or somewhere in between. As another year of highs and lows brings us into a new decade, I regret to inform you of the deaths of Jason Bowyer and Libby January, two prominent long-standing members who will be sorely missed. On behalf of the Society I would like to thank Derwent for their continued loyal support of The Pastel Society with the Annual Exhibition and Workshops at The Heatherley School of Fine Art and for so generously sponsoring the Derwent Award and the Visitors’ Choice Award. My thanks to all our prize-givers, Unison and Caran d’Ache to mention but a few and to our Opener, Paul Martin, from BBC’s Flog It. I would also like to thank the staff of the Mall Galleries for all they have done to ensure the smooth running of this exhibition. Their unstinting behind the scenes support and professionalism is an example to us all. I hope you enjoy this year’s exhibition and this catalogue to accompany it, which includes articles by our cover artist Bob Last, featured artist Alexander Prowse, and Invited Artist Mark Cazalet. In a few weeks’ time, a new £20 note featuring JMW Turner, England’s greatest painter will be issued. The appearance of an artist on the most commonly circulating banknote in Britain marks an auspicious start to the coming decade. May it roar louder than ever! – Jeannette Hayes PPS, President

Bob Last Squaring the Circle

“I started using pastels after I retired and went back to life drawing – something I had not done since my student days. Over the years I have explored many subjects - landscapes, still life, abstracts and portraits – all of which I still enjoy doing. However, recently I have changed my approach and like to stand in front of a blank canvas or board with no plan or formulated idea as to what I am going to do. I work on board or MDF, which I prime with gesso, and add pumice powder to give a textured surface. I then just start making marks with charcoal. I like to think of this initial stage as charcoal scaffolding onto which I build shape and form with colour. I need to make marks to have something to respond to. Spaces left empty are as important to the design as what is drawn. I like to keep changing what I do and how I do it. This probably comes from working as a freelance designer for over 40 years. I constantly had to think up new ideas, be inventive and solve problems. I feel working directly without any subject in mind allows the subconscious to take over and what results can be really interesting and often surprising.” – Bob Last PS, Cover Artist

Mark Cazalet Night Watch 3

“My images all start as encounters in front of nature, site specific responses, each with their own peculiarities of light, spatial depth and atmosphere. I think of them as resonances, like waves in a ripple tank reflecting off the sides creating a dynamic gestalt movement across the surface of the paper. Resonance is defined as the sound which is produced by an object when it vibrates at the same rate as the sound waves from another object. Colour reverberates for me through interaction of complementary effects, harmonies or in variation of intensity and tone. Colours placed adjacently are spatial, this depth is woven with the flat patterns of design. To play with chromatics in this way is lyrical like setting a song or uttering a psalm. It can also be seen theologically as making a visible sign of inward transitions in perception, which are endlessly shifting and deepening. Andrew Marvell put it better in his seventeenth century poem The Garden, where our consciousness is transfigured by the power behind nature to a green thought in a green shade, an effect I aspire for my work to induce, similar to the sense of metanoia being a turning towards light.

Unison Young Artist Award £500

I trained in Cornwall, then Paris and India on postgraduate scholarships. Each place changed my working processes and references and I am indebted to each specific environment I have lived in. Recently I had a five week sabbatical in Kyoto drawing in the stroll and Zen gardens. The impact of this experience has yet to work its way out but another shift is coming.”

David Drew MBE as ‘The Jailer’

David Drew MBE as ‘Ugly Sister’

“In 1978 my wife and I were invited to moor our floating Art Gallery in the Pool of Little Venice, London. It was here that we first met David Drew and his wife June and the beginning of a lifelong and special friendship. David was a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet and Director of The Ballet Association. A regular visitor to the studio and particularly encouraging of my figure drawing, he made it possible for me to draw student dancers during rehearsals at the company School, White Lodge. An introduction to Norman Morrice, then Director of The Royal Ballet, was a short step to the huge privilege of being allowed to capture scenes from the wings and dressing rooms of The Opera House, Covent Garden. This continued under the directorship of his successor, Dame Monica Mason.

The Pastel Society Catalogue Award

First Prize Susie Prangnell Escapade Soft pastel 71 x 71 cm £520

“Escapade is worked in pure soft pastel on Pastelmat. I have used versions of the primary colours to create a childlike sense of adventure and mischief. I like the idea of pattern and order being disrupted giving me, as an adult, the freedom to play with shape, colour and composition. I prefer to work intuitively drawing upon memories, sketches, studies, and imagination so that my work gradually evolves. I am aware of an ebb and flow process during which I keep an open mind about the direction the work will take.” – Susie Prangnell

The portability and immediacy that working in pastels allows means they are a wonderful medium in which to capture the ephemeral beauty of the garden; that short season when everything is in full bloom and even that magical time of day when the colours are really glowing in the sunshine. If you have an idea for a pastel commission, get in touch with our Commissions Consultants and they will help you find the right artist for the job. commissions@mallgalleries.com www.mallgalleries.org.uk

In 1794, Nicolas Jacques Conté developed the modern graphite lead from a mixture of clay and graphite, thus making it finally possible to create different grades of hardness for pencils. The Conté à Paris range is today internationally known for its wide variety of techniques and effects for drawing, sketching, and pastel work
