The Pastel Society 122nd Annual Exhibition Browse & Buy now at www.mallgalleries.org.uk Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1 020 7930 6844 www.thepastelsociety.org.uk www.mallgalleries.org.uk Registered Charity Number 296479
President’s Foreword It is late January 2021, and I should be writing a foreword welcoming visitors to this year’s 122nd Pastel Society show at Mall Galleries, but due to circumstances beyond everyone’s control, I am instead welcoming you to view our 2021 exhibition online. We are all hoping that the situation with COVID-19 will improve enough for an actual exhibition to be held from the 1 to 10 April (with a Preview on 31 March), but for the time being are happy to accept that an online exhibition is a welcome alternative to not holding the exhibition at all! The Pastel Society’s Annual Exhibition is a showcase of paintings, drawings and three-dimentional works in pastel and other dry media such as pencil, charcoal and conté by leading professional and emerging artists created now, today. As any visitor to past exhibitions will tell you, the diversity of what can be achieved with dry media is astonishing.
elected this year (COVID-19 regulations mean it is not possible to interview potential new members and see their portfolios in person), she occupies her unique position two years in a row. We are pleased to present as this year’s Invited Artist, Ingrid Wilkins. An established abstract artist, based in London, Ingrid likes lines, edges and corners. The linear quality of pastels therefore suits her style. “There are certain lines that I find beautiful. Making a straight line or a curved line should be easy, but to do it and achieve this feeling of beauty is quite difficult,” she says. There is great affinity for pastels in Ingrid’s use of lines in her work. There is unique beauty in the texture of pigment pressed on and into paper. Ingrid has contributed two collages to our show, for which we are grateful.
The Pastel Society saw the highest number of submissions in its history this year and I thank everyone who submitted their work. I know from personal experience how great an undertaking it is to enter, and how much heart and soul will have gone into the art work sent for selection. Having spoken to many members over the past twelve months, I get the impression that while Lockdown provided some members with an opportunity to focus on their work without the usual distractions of ‘normal’ life (which translated into a very creative time), for others it was a time of distress and anxiety (which meant they had to dig deep to practise their art at all). Supporting each other has never been more important, and I have been heartened by the way that members have taken to sharing their experiences, and teaching and mentoring online. Knowing you are not alone is an important factor in making it through these tough times. It is my sad duty to inform you of the loss of two dear, longstanding members, Ken Paine and Bob Last. We have been kindly loaned some of their work for inclusion in this year’s exhibition. While their work serves as a poignant reminder of the talent they both wielded, it is a pale substitute for their company. In happier news, we welcome new member, Halla Shafey, whose thought-provoking work ‘Child Bride’ won the Catalogue Award, Second Prize in last year’s exhibition. Halla, who is a dab hand at hosting online workshops, was the only new member elected at last year’s AGM and because there will be no new members

I would like to thank our Sponsor, Derwent, who have now been marvellous supporters of the Society for six consecutive years. I also thank the Council, our members, Mall Galleries and our opener Griff Rhys Jones for their generous support in putting this exhibition together during what has been a particularly difficult year and, finally, you the visitor. Most of the works in the exhibition are for sale, so if one grabs your fancy, why not buy it and make 2021 a year to remember for something other than vaccines and face masks? – Jeannette Hayes PPS, President

There are a number of prizes and awards available to win at the Annual Exhibition. These include:
My subject matter is found all around me in the landscape of the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales. This painting ‘Inspiration, Bowland Knotts’ is close to home and forms the high ground on the Yorkshire and Lancashire border and is subject to everchanging colour and light.

I enjoy being out in the landscape where my attention to a subject is often captured by an unexpected brief glimpse such as a burst of yellow in spring gorse or the rich burnt sienna in the moorland grasses. However, my working approach is, in the main, studio based. I work on full size sheets of mount-board which gives me space for expressive mark making. Painting is a journey of adding and subtracting, I’m always mindful of balancing busy spaces and texture with quiet passages. Occasionally I will divert into other media but I enjoy the sensitivity and dynamics that can be found in the drawn line and the ability to add spontaneous blasts of instant pastel colour. – Norma Stephenson PS, Cover Artist

The Pastel Society Catalogue Award “Escapade is worked in pure soft pastel on Pastelmat. I have used versions of the primary colours to create a childlike sense of adventure and mischief. I like the idea of pattern and order being disrupted giving me, as an adult, the freedom to play with shape, colour and composition. I prefer to work intuitively drawing upon memories, sketches, studies, and imagination
First Prize
Anne Magill September Pastel 125 x 125 cm £25,000
“I made this drawing just after moving into a new studio in the first lockdown; for a number of reasons I had found it quite hard to settle in. I instinctively felt that working on this large drawing would help me bed into my new space and happily it did. The man in this portrait occasionally appears in my work, always silhouetted against the sky, I like how he looks directly out to the viewer, not confrontational but with strength and confidence.“ – Anne Magill

In 1794, Nicolas Jacques Conté developed the modern graphite lead from a mixture of clay and graphite, thus making it finally possible to create different grades of hardness for pencils. The Conté à Paris range is today internationally known for its wide variety of techniques and effects for drawing, sketching, and pastel work
