It is with sadness that this year we have to record the death of Rebecca Cains RBA RWA who will be greatly missed by the Society. To contact any artist, please email honsec.rba@gmail.com or see the artist’s page on the RBA website at: www.royalsocietyofbritishartists.org.uk

President’s Foreword submissions from them and we have included 60 in this show - all selected on merit. This is a testament to our commitment and success in encouraging young people to involve themselves with our Society. Additionally, we have a further 40 young artists who are this year’s RBA RISING STARS – they are the semi-finalists for our Rome Scholarship and their work can be seen online at the Royal Over-Seas League. They are also featured in this catalogue. It will be apparent from the show that our Members have worked extremely hard to present their best works for you to enjoy, whether viewing them in the gallery or online, and I express my thanks to them all. ‘Investing in art for the future is investing in the future of art’ This is my second year as President and I am delighted to celebrate another RBA exhibition at the Mall Galleries, showcasing figurative art at its best. We have all been challenged by the 2020 pandemic and adverse weather conditions, so it makes it all the more exhilarating and joyful to engage in something as uplifting and inspiring as this exhibition. Our Patron, Sponsors and Prize-givers have reaffirmed their support for this

prestigious event and we thank each and every one of them. This year we have had a record-breaking number of works submitted by non-members and I wish to congratulate those whose work is represented in the show. There were many others we would like to have included, had we had the space to do so – it was such a difficult task for our Selection Committee.

Warmest regards, Mick Davies PRBA Hon RBSA President

Over the last three years we have made a concerted effort to reach out to young artists and, as a result, this year saw 328 5

RBA Star Students 2021 The RBA are delighted to work once again with The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS) in celebrating the work of young artists from schools and colleges nationwide. Our Education Committee had the difficult task of selecting 20 works from many which had been submitted with the aid of The Art Society’s colleagues, who visited ‘A’ Level shows nationwide to put forward the names of student artists whose work was of an exceptional standard to include as part of our exhibition at Mall Galleries. Sadly due to Covid restrictions the RBA Star Students have been unable to show their work in this exhibition.

Winner of The Whistler Award 2020: Nick Tidnam PPRBA NEAC The Whistler Medal is presented annually to an RBA member chosen by his/her peers. The award is seen as a mark of respect and appreciation for a fellow artist, whose artistic work and/ or efforts on behalf of the Society have contributed greatly to its betterment and well-being. In 2020 the Society awarded the Medal to a man who has always worked hard on its behalf and is also a fine painter, therefore easily meeting both requirements. He was Membership Secretary for many years, Council member, Trustee, a Member of The Education Committee and RBA President. His support for Member artists and his lifelong commitment to helping and guiding young artists has been outstanding. We all know him as a fair minded, honest gentleman. A modest man by nature, thankfully his paintings speak for themselves and represent a culmination of hard work and thought. He is always striving to take his work forward and is constantly challenging himself artistically.

Nick Tidnam Viennese Window Acrylic 28.5 x 28.5 cm £650

Times may change and there may be new fads and directions, but whatever the trends, quality always stands out and Nick Tidnam has it in abundance.

Nick Tidnam has works in public and private collections in the UK and worldwide and has received many awards and prizes in prestigious exhibitions. He was elected to the RBA in 2001 and to the New English Art Club in 2014.

26

During his time as a Member, his service to the RBA and his actions are there for all to see - and actions speak louder than words! Nick Tidnam is a very special man, a very special artist and a worthy recipient of this award.
