President’s Foreword A warm welcome to the 210th exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the RI. This year will be my last exhibition as President of the RI. It has been an honour and a privilege to hold this position and I will always cherish the memories of working with so many talented artists. I could not have achieved so much without all those loyal Members who have served with me on the RI Council. Our Patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year. Having been on the throne for 70 years, she is the longest serving British Monarch. In 2016 The Queen celebrated her 90th birthday and one of my first roles as President of the RI was to apply for funding from ‘The Patron's Fund’, a charity set up to mark Her Majesty’s birthday. We were given the maximum amount of £2500, which we spent on workshops for young up and coming artists. This year the RI are funding a special award to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. The RI Platinum Award of £700 will be given to a young artist whose work has been selected from this year’s exhibition. Once again we had an enormous number of submissions this year. They included over 300 works from young artists and many applications for Membership. Congratulations to Gary Cook, Teresa Lawler, Matthew Phinn and Martha Zmpounou who were all elected RI Members last year. Since our last show, four prominent RI Members have sadly passed away. Paul Banning, Harry Price, Peter Weaver and Honorary Retired Member, Susan Pendered. They will be sorely missed. On behalf of myself, the RI Council and our Members I would like to welcome and thank Rebecca Salter for opening this exhibition and presenting the awards. In 2019, Rebecca was elected President of the Royal Academy and was the first female to hold the post. We have something in common! Thank you to all our sponsors who so generously give the awards and prizes, totalling over £7000. Thank you also to all the hardworking staff at the Mall Galleries who help us put on this wonderful exhibition.

Welcoming our New Members Gary Cook RI
Teresa Lawler RI
“My work is a fusion of traditional painting with a contemporary, campaigning raison d’être so I feature subtle messages about sustainability hidden within the works.”
“My current interests lie in the creation of landscapes in the same way that a designer in film creates an alternative world on screen. Into these landscapes I place stylised architectural structures. I am interested in the idea of these buildings interacting with the landscapes beyond the city boundaries.“
Matthew Phinn RI
Martha Zmpounou RI
“I have a strong connection with Japan, which undoubtedly influenced my own style of painting. I know how popular watercolour is there and how much regard the Japanese have for the British watercolour tradition.“
“Conceptually my work is underpinned by an effort to subtly undermine the glorification of an idealised, polished self, complete and coherent, which is usually evident in traditional portraiture.“

The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) would like to congratulate Her Majesty The Queen on her 70th year as Queen of England, the longest serving British Monarch. Her Majesty is Patron to the RI and on 25th February 1971 opened the Mall Galleries. The RI has always had a close relationship with The Royal Family. In 1831 the ‘Institute’ was established. William IV was King and his wife Queen Adelaide was our first Patron. At that time the RI was known as the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ and The Duchess of Kent, Princess Victoria and The Duke of Sussex all became Patrons in the early 1830s. In 1863 the name was changed to the ‘Institute of Painters in Water Colours’. In 1883 The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, opened the Institutes’ magnificent new galleries in Piccadilly, London. This, the 65th exhibition, was also attended by The Princess of Wales, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and the Duke and Duchess of Teck. Later that same year Queen Victoria conferred upon the Institute the title ‘Royal’. The artist William Leighton Leitch RI tutored Queen Victoria, The Prince of Wales, Princess Beatrice and other members of The Royal Family. Over the years Royals have commissioned and purchased works by Member artists. Many members of The Royal Family have visited the RI exhibitions, amongst them, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, George V and Queen Mary, Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh and, in 1989, The Queen Mother. Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Beatrice, became an Honorary Member as did Lady Patricia Ramsey, granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In 1984 HRH The Prince of Wales became an Honorary Member and has exhibited regularly in our annual exhibition over the years. In this special year 2022, the RI will be giving a special prize, the Platinum Award in honour of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The RI – welcoming non-members' work “It is, therefore, solely by the talents displayed in his Works, that the Artist can claim any preference and that the unfriended man of merit, who is unknown to the Public, will receive equal attention, and will have a fair opportunity of publicly displaying his Works... It is only upon the broad and simple principle of personal merit that this Society is founded, and its Regulations formed…” from the RI’s original Mandate of 1832. As you can see from the quote above, the RI continues to see the importance of an open exhibition where both members and nonmembers work can be shown together. Again this year we are especially proud to have almost a 50/50 split between them and are sure that this provides opportunity to artists, both emerging and established, as well as quality and variety to our visitors. On the following three pages we have chosen to illustrate a few works by non-members to show our appreciation of all those talented watercolour artists who are exhibiting with us this year. RI 2022... and going forward Despite the difficulties over the past few years the RI has continued working for the future. Covid forced us to stop our programme of workshops and curtail our popular friends of the RI. We are currently planning a new series of RI Workshops which will be held at the prestigious Heatherleys School of Fine Art in London Chelsea, including techniques and tuition on landscape, portraiture, still life and plein air painting. The line-up of tutors includes some familiar RI favourites, Chris Forsey, Roger Dellar and Anne McCormack as well as new Members, Gary Cook, Martha Zmpounou, Matthew Phinn, Claire Sparkes and Brian Smith.
Also this summer Jean Noble will hold another two of her successful ‘London Sketchers’ days at Canary Wharf on July 13th and August 11th between 10am and 4pm. Details of which will be on our website soon www.royalinstituteofpaintersinwatercolours.org The Linden Hall Studio Gallery, in the seaside town of Deal in Kent has offered to stage an RI exhibition this summer. It will open (covid permitting) with a Private View on 2 July 2022 between 2pm and 4pm and will close on the 23 July. www.lindenhallstudio.co.uk Further details about our future RI workshops will be available later this year on social media and on www.royalinstituteofpaintersinwatercolours.org

Fondly remembered
Harry Price RI 1933 – 2021
Paul Banning RI RSMA WGA 1934 - 2021
Harry Price was born in Kington, Herefordshire in 1933 and studied at Hereford College of Art from 1951 to 1954 and the West of England College of Art, Bristol, from 1956 to 1957. He was the Principal Lecturer in the Department of Art, History and Communication at Coventry University, between 1972 and 1995 and was elected a Member of the RI in 2003.
Paul Banning was born in 1934 in Trinidad and after moving to the UK attended the West of England College of Art in Bristol. After a successful career in fine furniture design he became a full-time painter in 1986, and was elected a Member of the RI in 2005.
Harry was a true craftsman and master of watercolour, using its translucency and fluidity in often complicated cityscapes where “the distortions and reflected images in glass and mirrors often create tensions with the flat surface of the paper itself and find expression in the natural sparkle and surface sheen”. He has had his work exhibited in London, Bristol, New York and Toronto.
38
He served on the Council from 2008 until 2014 and in March 2011 was awarded the coveted Turner Watercolour Award Medal. Paul was also a member of the Wapping Group of Artists (WGA) and the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA). Despite the complexities associated with working directly from the subject, Paul was mainly a plein air painter. He found a particular fascination for painting in tropical climates where he said he found, “the strength of light at midday is incredibly strong and the shadows are so intensely deep that it makes for an exceptional contrast…especially where the primary colours split and separate.”
Peter Weaver RI RBA 1927 - 2021
Susan Pendered RI 1925 - 2021
Peter Weaver was born in London and studied at St. Martins School of Art & Crafts, Camberwell School of Art & Crafts and The Slade School of Fine Art UCL. He worked for many years in both sculpture and painting as he found that they complemented each other.
Majorie Anne Pendered affectionately known as ‘Sue’ passed away peacefully in August 2021 at the age of 96.
Peter was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Sculptors and was a Hon. Member of Chelsea Arts Club. He was a founder member of the Printmakers Council and teacher at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts for many years. He has work in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery and also private collections in the UK and Sweden.
Sue was elected a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1982 and regularly exhibited at the Mall Galleries. In 1988 she received the Winsor & Newton Award for the best group of paintings by a Member. She exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and had exhibitions in the USA, Canada and France. In 2008 she became an Hon. Retired Member of the RI.
