The beginnings of the RI can be traced back to the formation of the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ in 1807. Early exhibitors included William Blake, Paul Sandby, David Cox and Joseph Powell. From the start the New Society showed the work of non-members alongside that of members, a policy still followed today. Sadly the society suffered from financial problems which caused it to close in 1812. Nineteen years later, in 1831, Joseph Powell with several likeminded artists resurrected the New Society of Painters in Water Colours. The next few years were stormy ones with considerable internal disputes and policy changes. Even so the Society thrived and its growing strength during the mid 19th century shows it at the forefront of the movement to get recognition for watercolour painting and the acceptance of it as a serious medium for art. The RI exhibited in various galleries in Old Bond Street, The Strand and Pall Mall until 1883 when, having become the Institute of Painters in Water Colours, they moved into their new gallery in Piccadilly opposite the RA in Burlington House. In 1883, by command of Queen Victoria, the Institute added the prefix ‘Royal’ to its name. The RI continued in its Piccadilly home throughout the Boer War, WWI and WWII with a great many members joining up to fight or work as war artists both at home and on the front line. Prominent war artist members of the RI include Elizabeth Thompson (Lady Butler), Sir George Clausen and Sir William Orpen. During WWI Norman Wilkinson, a naval officer who eventually became the RI’s 10th President, developed ‘Dazzle Camouflage’ a novel system that influenced many 20th century artists. In the post-war years the galleries in Piccadilly were becoming more and more impractical so when the lease ran out in 1970 the RI joined several other leading art societies in the Federation of British Artists based at Mall Galleries which were opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1971. The galleries which have recently been extensively renovated and modernised remain the RI’s home today.
President’s Foreword Congratulations to Ann Kilvington and Kate Morgan for being elected as Members to the RI by the Membership last year. We are in the final stages of finding a home for our archives. The V&A have agreed to preserve our extensive collection of material from its foundation, and the RI will be looking to secure £15,000 for the restoration of some of the books which were damaged during the Blitz. During July and August this year 16 lucky students will be given free tuition by three Masters in the art of watercolour, Deborah Walker, Anne McCormack and Ian Sidaway, thanks to a gift of £2,500 from The Patron’s Fund and the donation of art materials from Winsor & Newton. The Patron’s Fund was set up by Her Majesty, The Queen to acknowledge the work of the charitable organisations for which she is Patron. This year we have several New Awards to hand out. They are ‘The Winsor & Newton Award’ of £3,000, ‘The Winsor & Newton Product Prize’ of £1,000 worth of art materials and ‘TheArtsBox Solo Prize’ which will give an RI member a solo exhibition in the beautiful city of Vicenza in September 2019. Welcome to our show, the largest exhibition of contemporary water media paintings in Europe. It has been 187 years since the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) was formed by eight prominent watercolourists of the day. The New Society of Painters in Water Colours held its first exhibition in 1832, showing 330 works of art by 118 artists. In 1883 the RI opened the second largest gallery, after the Royal Academy which exhibited 889 paintings across three galleries. Since then there have been approximately 600 Members of the RI and 16 Presidents. Welcome to this year’s 206th exhibition showing 407exquisite works of art by 151 artists from 12 countries. Lastly, one other number you might be interested in, it will be 365 days until the release of the Institute’s first hardback book ‘Then & Now’, a fascinating insight into the RI’s history and its current Members.
It’s time to pick up a bargain piece of artwork! RI Members will each be donating a small painting to a fundraising exhibition. Naomi Tydeman RI has kindly offered to host the exhibition at her gallery in the lovely seaside town of Tenby, Pembrokeshire from 25th until 31st July 2018. Finally I would like to thank the following people - our generous sponsors for the awards they have given, Humphrey Ocean RA for taking the time to open the show and present the prizes, and Mall Galleries for the endless work they contribute to make this show such a success ever year. As President I would like to thank the Officers and Council for their support and of course all the artists for the exciting work in this, our 206th exhibition. Rosa Sepple President, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 5
