President’s Foreword
Welcome to this, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 208 th exhibition. It is now 189 years since its foundation. The RI was originally called the New Society of Painters in Water Colours and it held its first exhibition in 1831 under the patronage of Queen Adelaide with the aim of promoting artists who were not affiliated to any ‘Society’. Invitations were circulated amongst artists and this first open exhibition was held in Old Bond Street with 118 painters submitting works.
The Leathersellers’ Company for their continued support and to all those who give so generously every year by supplying us with prizes. We are fortunate to have an additional prize this year - The President’s Choice Award of £750. Above all, our thanks must go to all the artists who have contributed their amazing paintings, to the Chief Executive Officer, Clare O’Brien, and everyone at Mall Galleries for their help and support. I would personally like to thank my amazing Council for their support and contribution over the past year making this one of the most respected art institutes in the world today. Rosa Sepple President, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours
New members
This year we have had contributions from North America, Europe and Asia. 459 artists submitted 1,096 works online which included not only a record number of young ‘Emerging Artists’, but also a record number of artists wishing to become members. Please take time to look around the galleries. This is the largest exhibition of its kind in Europe and includes 444 watercolour paintings, 196 of which are from non-members. Since our last show we have sadly lost three members. Ian Bliss, John Raynes and David Easton who will all be sadly missed. Congratulations and a big welcome must go to our two new members, Claire Sparkes and Zi Ling. Both of them have a unique approach to painting that will add a new and exciting dimension to our shows. On behalf of myself, the RI Council and our Members I would like to welcome and thank Royal Academician, Chris Orr MBE, for opening the exhibition and presenting the prizes. Our immense gratitude must also go to Winsor & Newton and

: a colourful history The beginnings of the RI can be traced back to the formation of the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ in 1807. This new Society had a fascinating and sometimes turbulent period, sadly having to close in 1812 but re-emerging in 1831 when it thrived and, in the mid 19th century was at the forefront of the movement to get recognition for watercolour as a serious medium for painting. The success of the Society’s endeavours were marked in 1883 when it received the prefix ‘Royal’ by command of Queen Victoria. With a huge array of prominent artists as members and exhibitors, the RI has continued to promote its ethos and traditions throughout the 20th century and up to the present day. This unique history is now revealed fully in a newly published hardback book, ‘Then & Now’. Researched and compiled over a period of two years by Anthony J Lester, the writer and broadcaster, it is the first book to be written exclusively about the Institute and its members. The book contains many archive images and a list of every member since the RI’s inception. It also features biographies of the RI’s current members with examples of their work written by Adrian Hill, of Adrian Hill Fine Art. The book has a foreword written by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
The book will be available during the Exhibition at Mall Galleries bookshop and is priced at £34.99. Full details are available at: royalinstituteofpaintersinwatercolours.org

His whimsical paintings were inspired by his love of the countryside, his home and his family, his wife Jill, four children and his six grandchildren. His love of fishing as a boy was the creative force behind his sea paintings. His beautiful and imaginative work evolved slowly over weeks and took on a dream-like quality.

John Raynes RI (1929-2019)
John Raynes was born in New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. John studied for a National Diploma in Design at St Albans School of Art from 1949 to 1952, completing his studies in 1957 as an Associate of the Royal College of Art (ARCA) in London. John returned to painting full time in 1993, exhibiting in the UK, Europe and the United Arab Emirates. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 2003, winning the St. Cuthbert’s Paper Mill Prize. John also wrote sixteen instructional painting technique books and was commissioned to work with celebrity participants on “Star Portraits” for BBC1. John’s painting subjects ranged from portraiture and figurative images through to landscape, in his later years the landscape of Cornwall. He was ever drawn to extend his search for abstract shapes in primary figurative images. John recently chose to become a Honorary Retired member.
