President’s Foreword For the past 190 years the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) has been showing the very best in the fine art of watercolour. It is the largest exhibition of its kind in the world. This year we had a record number of submissions - 1,735 from all around the world. We have chosen 210 paintings to complement the 229 works of art from our Members. Amongst the diverse and eclectic mix of contemporary works in our exhibition, there are 47 paintings from young, talented, up-and-coming artists, some of whom have exhibited with us before. I am sure that some of them will become future Members of the RI. Congratulations must go to George Butler, Juliette Losq and Brian Smith who will be exhibiting with the RI for the first time this year as our newest Members.
the Leathersellers’ Company for the £1,000 cash prize for a young artist aged 30 or under and to everyone else who has contributed to the 17 awards of cash, art supplies, trophies and publication of artists’ work into greetings cards. I would like to personally thank the Vice President, the Honorary Secretary, the Officers and the Council for all their work and, of course, the Members and all the artists who submit work annually to make this such a diverse mix of eclectic and contemporary art for our annual exhibition.
Rosa Sepple President, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours
New members
I regret to inform you that earlier this year artist, Roy Freer RI NEAC ROI, passed away. He had been a member of the RI for the past 32 years, regularly exhibiting at Mall Galleries, not only as a Member of the RI but also as a Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) and the New English Art Club (NEAC). Roy will be sadly missed by us all. Special thanks must go to the CEO at Mall Galleries, Clare O’Brien, and all the staff for managing, when possible, to open the gallery for exhibitions during the pandemic. Art buyers have still been able purchase works on-line at www.mallgalleries.org.uk throughout this time. The RI would also like to thank the companies and individuals who support us every year by donating and selecting the prizes. We would like to thank in particular, Winsor & Newton for the £3,000 cash prize and the prize of £1,000 worth of art materials,

RI Artists in their own Residence… The members of the RI like all of us, have been forced to spend much longer periods of time than usual in their home environments. But they have kept themselves busy… This year, due to Covid safety restrictions we are unable to hold the normal events in the Mall Galleries during the two weeks that our Exhibition will run. These usually include talks, tours, reviews and demonstrations but even more importantly the opportunity for our artists to meet other enthusiasts in the art of watercolour. As some small compensation to ‘the real thing’ some of our members are providing some virtual information about their work in the form of short videos and some are giving live demonstrations. Artists include; Aimee Birnbaum, Lillias August, David A Parfitt, Chris Forsey, Jean Noble, Ian Sidaway, Roger Dellar and Brian Smith. We also have a virtual, 3D version of our exhibition, enabling those who are unable to visit the gallery in person, the opportunity of “walking through and exploring” this year’s show from the comfort of home. For full details visit: www.mallgalleries.org.uk/whats-on/events All of us at the RI thank you for your interest in our work and our 209th Exhibition and we look forward to meeting you again in person in the very near future.

The RI – welcoming non-members’ work “It is, therefore, solely by the talents displayed in his Works, that the Artist can claim any preference and that the unfriended man of merit, who is unknown to the Public, will receive equal attention, and will have a fair opportunity of publicly displaying his Works ….. It is only upon the broad and simple principle of personal merit that this Society is founded, and its Regulations formed…” from the RI’s original Mandate of 1832 As you can see from the quote above, the RI continues to see the importance of an open exhibition where both members and nonmembers work can be shown together. This year we are especially proud to have almost a 50/50 split between them and are sure that this provides opportunity to artists, both emerging and established, as well as quality and variety to our visitors. On this page we have chosen to illustrate a few works by non-members to show our appreciation of all those talented watercolour artists who are exhibiting with us this year.

Then and Now...
It was a very different world in 1883 when this illustration by Thomas Walter Wilson was executed. It celebrated the opening of the first RI exhibition to be held in the then new premises of the RI in Piccadilly which was shortly before the Institute was bestowed with the prefix ‘Royal’ by Queen Victoria, herself a keen watercolourist. The RI has always sought to be progressive. It was originally founded in 1831 on the premise of allowing non-members work to hang alongside the members’ paintings. It continues in this tradition, as well as maintaining the ability to adapt, a quality that has become a necessity over the last year! Sadly, the pandemic has had a negative effect on many aspects of the RI that we used to take for granted. Exhibitions, private views, workshops and the friends’ initiative have all been severely affected. We are committed to reinstate these as soon as we are able to do so, hopefully enhanced by the use of technology - something that we have all come to rely on more than usual over recent months. All of the paintings in this year’s exhibition can be viewed to browse and buy on Mall Galleries’ website with the added feature of a 3D virtual tour of the entire exhibition space. But of course, we are also welcoming visitors to this year’s exhibition between the 20 and 29 of May with all Covid safety measures in place and we hope to welcome as many of you as possible. The full history of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours together with profiles of its members is available in the fully illustrated book, ‘RI, Then and Now’. The book is available through Mall Galleries’ bookshop or by contacting Rosa Sepple at rosa@rosasepple.com

Roy Freer RI ROI NEAC (1938-2021) Roy Freer was born in Birmingham in November 1938. He was educated at Bournville School of Art from 1953 to 1956, the Birmingham College of Art from 1956 to 1958 and the Birmingham University Art Teachers’ Centre in 1968. Living in Suffolk for many years with his artist wife Sally, they have two sons Martin and Sam. Roy was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) in 1987. He then became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 1989, followed by membership of the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 2000. He exhibited regularly in London at The Royal Academy and Mall Galleries and had numerous solo and mixed shows across the UK. In 1986 he was awarded the Bronze Medal at the RI, the same year he was given The Cornelissen Prize, which he won again in 1997. He received The Catto Gallery Award in 1992, the Llewellyn Alexander Award in 1994, the C. Robertson Prize in 1995 and the Stanley Grimm Prize in 1997. In 1997 he also received the Higher Certificate Distinction for Life Drawing from De Montfort University. In 1985 Roy was commissioned by Fidelity Unit Trust to paint the snooker final between Steve Davis and Jimmy White. This led to a request from Shell to paint the northern coast of Ireland for their calendar. Roy contributed to various publications including ‘Art Review’, ‘Leisure Painter’ and ‘Artists & Illustrators’ and was invited to arts events around the UK including the York Music and Arts Festival and Art in Action. He taught many aspiring artists and demonstrated to many arts groups. Many of their members remained loyal followers. Roy’s contribution to the RI during his 32 years as a Member has been immeasurable and he will be sadly missed.
