President’s Foreword
Welcome to our 207th exhibition, the largest of its kind in the world with over 400 contemporary paintings coming from Canada, USA, China, India and Europe. We have the very best of traditional watercolours and mixed media water-based paintings. Members’ and non-members’ work still hang side by side, which was the basis for our foundation in 1831. Since the last show we have lost four prominent Members of the RI; former President, Ronald Maddox; former Vice President, Peter Folkes; former Archivist, Sandra Walker; and past Council Member, Richard Plincke. All of them will be sadly missed. In 2018 the RI elected four new Members. Congratulations and welcome to Varsha Bhatia, Ann Blockley, Mark Elsmore and Tianya Zhou. This year we have released a comprehensive and fully illustrated hardback book, ‘Then & Now’, about the RI’s long history and its current members. This long-anticipated publication includes a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, and a comprehensive list of all the RI members from its inception. The 170 page book costs £34.99 and is available at Mall Galleries. Special thanks must go to these people - Anthony J Lester for opening this show and for the hours he spent researching and writing the history for the book, Adrian Hill who spent endless hours writing the members’ biographies, and Halsgrove Publishing for all their hard work producing it.
This year we have four new awards; the Baohong Artists’ Watercolour Paper Prizes; the Chaoshan Watercolour Award; and the Richard Plincke RI Prize. I would like to thank Winsor & Newton, The Leathersellers’ Company, The ArtsBox, John Purcell, Schmincke, Frank Herring & Sons, Megan Fitzoliver, Cass Art, Escoda, James Fletcher-Watson RI, the family of Matt Bruce RI, Linda Blackstone for the Debra Manifold RI Memorial Award, the family of Neil Meacher RI, Anthony J Lester, Dry Red Press, and our new prizegivers of course. As President, I would also like to thank not only everyone at Mall Galleries for their contribution to making this show such a success every year, but also the RI’s Officers and Council for all they do to help make decisions, record minutes, manage social media and run the ‘fRIends of the RI’. Last but definitely not least, we would like to thank the artists who submit such wonderful work every year and all of you for your continued support which is so very important to us. Rosa Sepple President, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours

: a colourful history The beginnings of the RI can be traced back to the formation of the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ in 1807. This new Society had a fascinating and sometimes turbulent period, sadly having to close in 1812 but re-emerging in 1831 when it thrived and, in the mid 19th century was at the forefront of the movement to get recognition for watercolour as a serious medium for painting. The success of the Society’s endeavours were marked in 1883 when it received the prefix ‘Royal’ by command of Queen Victoria. With a huge array of prominent artists as members and exhibitors, the RI has continued to promote its ethos and traditions throughout the 20th century and up to the present day. This unique history is now revealed fully in a newly published hardback book, ‘Then & Now’. Researched and compiled over a period of two years by Anthony J Lester, the writer and broadcaster, it is the first book to be written exclusively about the Institute and its members. The book contains many archive images and a list of every member since the RI’s inception. It also features biographies of the RI’s current members with examples of their work written by Adrian Hill, of Adrian Hill Fine Art. The book has a foreword written by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
The book will be available during the Exhibition at Mall Galleries bookshop and is priced at £34.99. Full details are available at: royalinstituteofpaintersinwatercolours.org

Ronald Maddox FCSD PS Hon RBA Hon RWS (1930–2018) Ronald Maddox was born in Purley, Surrey, in 1930. He studied art at St Albans School of Arts and Hertfordshire College of Art and Design from 1945. He was a designer and artist in the Air Ministry Design Unit with the Royal Air Force during his National Service. He subsequently continued with his studies from 1950 to 1956 at the London College of Printing and Graphic Art and Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and later gained designer experience with the British Overseas Airways Corporation. In 1962 Ronald became a freelance artist, consultant, designer and illustrator undertaking numerous important commissions, notably in 1974 completing line drawings of the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Royal Naval College and Queen’s House, Greenwich, and Mansion House, City of London. The original drawings are held in the public collection at the Tate Gallery, London. Ronald became a Member of the RI in the early 1960s serving on the Council before being elected Membership Secretary in 1974. In 1979 he became Vice President, holding this post until becoming the fourteenth President in 1989, a position he held for 25 years until 2014. He was an Honorary Member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), The Pastel Society (PS), as well as a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD). Ronald won numerous awards for his paintings at the RI including the Rowland Hilder Award for the Most Outstanding Landscape in 1990 and the Winsor & Newton Members’ Award for the Most Outstanding Group of Watercolours in 1981 and 2000.
Richard Plincke RI (1928–2018) Richard Plincke was born in Woldingham, Surrey in 1928. He was educated at Stowe where his interest in the Art School provided a foundation for his future as an artist. He later studied experimental abstract painting at the Department of Fine Art, Southampton Institute of Education. Formerly a partner in Plincke, Leaman & Browning Architects, Richard followed a second career as a professional artist. His approach to painting evolved over many years and his style attained a level of expression that evokes freshness of atmosphere, and the activity and excitement of the scenes depicted. Richard was elected to the RI in 1984 and served on the RI Council. He was previously runner-up for the Bronze Medal for two consecutive years and shortlisted for the Hunting Prize for Watercolour of the Year. Richard carried out work in stained glass and in tapestry and appeared in two BBC television programmes, each presenting three artists and their work. His work has been published in nine books, particularly in the book: ‘Watercolour Innovations’ by Jackie Simmonds, published by Collins. Richard’s work was selected for many open exhibitions: the Singer and Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition; the Hunting Group Art Award Exhibitions; the ‘Discerning Eye’ Exhibition; the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions; and the Royal West of England Academy Annual Exhibition, to name but a few. He was an annual exhibitor at Mall Galleries with the RI, the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) and The Pastel Society (PS). He also took part in travelling exhibitions with the RI to Seattle, Vancouver and Belgium and with the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in 1989.
Peter Folkes RI RWA (1923-2019)
Peter Folkes was elected a member of the RI in 1969 and served as Vice President from 1989 until 2009.He was born in Beaminster, Dorset, in 1923 and trained at the West of England College of Art, Bristol, between 1941 and 1950. His studies were interrupted by military service between 1942 and 1947 in which he served as a draughtsman in the Royal Corps of Signals in North Africa, Sicily and Italy and through which he was awarded a mention in dispatches in 1944. Peter was Head of Art at King Edward VI School, Southampton, from 1950 until 1965. In 1952 he became an Associate of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), seven years later becoming an Academician. Between 1964 and 1978 he was a lecturer at Southampton College of Art. In 1990 he was elected an Honorary Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and in 1992 he was appointed a consultant for Winsor & Newton. He later became an External Examiner for the Certificate in Humanities at the University of Southampton. Peter has had many solo shows and shared shows, exhibiting in New York, London, Gainsborough House in Sudbury, the University of Southampton and at the Royal West of England Academy. As well as private collections, his work has been in the public collections of the UK Government Art Collection, Arts Council of Great Britain, Southampton City Art Gallery, Royal West of England Academy, the Universities of Hull, Keele, Portsmouth, Southampton and King Edward VI School, Southampton.
Sandra Walker RI (1935–2018)
Sandra Walker was born in Milton, Pennsylvania, USA. She studied art at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and later she made her home in England. In 1999 Sandra was elected a Member of the RI serving on the Council and taking on the role of Archivist in 2012. Internationally renowned as one of the finest photorealist watercolourists, Sandra travelled the world seeking subjects to photograph which would ultimately be turned into stunningly intricate and realistic compositions. According to Sandra, ageing paint, crumbling brick and reminders of the cleverness, elegance and daring of man-made structures were her main inspirations. She was drawn to the street sounds and structures that constitute a city. Sandra Walker’s watercolours are represented in numerous public and private collections and embassies throughout the world. Her work is included in the collections of Senator Edward M Kennedy, Senator George McGovern, Senator Fred Thompson, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the Bank of America, New York, The Chase Collection, Denver, Colorado, Worcester College, Oxford and many others. While living in America, she was commissioned by the United States Mint to design a Congressional medal honouring Simon Wiesenthal. Sandra was also commissioned by Prime Minister Thatcher to paint the Houses of Parliament. She has won several awards including the Singer and Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and she had solo shows in India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, France, Italy and Mongolia.
