Rosa has been a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours since 2003. In 2010 she accepted the role of Publicity Secretary and in 2016 was elected as Vice President. Since August 2016, owing to Andy Wood’s illness, Rosa has been Acting President. Rosa started painting in 1999 and is self taught. In 2001 an exhibition in a local library led to her meeting Colin Kent RI who inspired her to experiment with watercolour and submit work to the RI Open Exhibition. After exhibiting for two years she was invited by Ian Bliss RI to apply for membership.

Rosa has stated that her initial objectives as President are to raise the profile of the Society, especially with young, up-and-coming painters; to find strong new members; to promote the new ‘fRIends of the RI’; to find a permanent home for the archives; and to publish a hardback book on the history of the RI with profiles of its current members. With her energy and enthusiasm, I am sure that she will achieve all of the above. Robin Hazlewood, Acting Vice President

Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 2017
President’s Foreword Welcome to the 205th Open Exhibition of the RI. This year we had a record number of entries since digital submissions were introduced. There were 1,090 images from 489 artists worldwide. This meant that the selection panel had difficult decisions to make but I think you will all agree that this is one of the best exhibitions to date. In the last few months of 2016 we sadly and unexpectedly lost three prominent and much loved members of the Society - our President of two years, Andy Wood, and long-time members, Bill Toop and C J Archer. They will be sadly missed.
In 2015 the RI launched ‘fRIends of the RI’ which is steadily growing. Members’ benefits include invitations to RI Private Views and exhibitions, discounted rates for workshops by members of the Society, regular newsletters and competitions. On a final note, I would like to thank our generous sponsors for supplying the awards and artist and printmaker, Norman Ackroyd, for coming to open the show and present them. Our grateful thanks also go to Mall Galleries for all their help and assistance, the artists for sending in such wonderful paintings and to you for coming to see the work. On a more personal note I would like to thank our wonderful Council Members who have worked so hard and made my job so much easier over the past few months. Lastly, I would like to thank the Members for voting for me to be their President. It is an honour. Rosa Sepple, President, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours
On a more positive note, the RI were given £2,500 from The Patron’s Fund. This charitable fund was set up to mark Her Majesty, The Queen’s 90th birthday and to acknowledge the work of the charitable organisations for which she is Patron. The monies will go to promoting the young up-and-coming watercolourists of the future. We had a very successful week-long fundraising exhibition and auction in the North Gallery at Mall Galleries in November 2016. This has raised money for a long-overdue hardback book on the illustrious history of the RI and its current members. This year the Society will be having two ‘Out of Town’ Exhibitions. The first will be hosted by Horsham Museum in West Sussex from 13 May until 15 July 2017. The other will be at The Albany Gallery in Cardiff from 12 October until 4 November 2017.

Andy Wood PPRI RBA (1947-2016)
a professional artist, including stage electrician at The London Palladium and running an Arts Centre. When he moved to Charmouth, Dorset, in 1977 he joined the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and started painting professionally. He opened a gallery in nearby Lyme Regis, and remained a fire fighter until moving with his wife, Kate and two children, Arthur and Freya, to Rye, East Sussex in 2002.
Archie was elected as a Member in 1987. His work, humour and unique style proved very popular. He was a prolific artist and produced an incredible body of work after retiring early from the advertising industry.
Bill Toop RI MSCD AOI (1943-2016)
Andy passed away on 19 November 2016, after a short illness. Although he had only been President for a short time, he and the RI Council had introduced many new initiatives including RI Workshops, RI fRIends and more social events for members. His sense of humour and dedication to the RI was unquestionable and he will be greatly missed by us all.
Andy Wood was elected President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 2014, the 15th President elect. Born in Porlock, Somerset in 1947. In the 1960s he attended Croydon College of Art and Newport College of Art and attained a degree in Fine Art and Film. He became a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1980 and a Member of the RI a year later. In 2009 he was elected RI Honorary Secretary and in 2014, as RI President, he was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS). Andy had many varied jobs before becoming

C J Archer Hon Rtd RI (1928-2016)
RI Member C J Archer affectionately known as ‘Archie’ sadly passed away peacefully just before Christmas 2016.
Bill Toop had a long career in the Arts and Education. He was born in Bere Regis, Dorset, in 1943 and opened his own gallery in Wiltshire in 1976 which he later moved to Dorset. Bill exhibited widely and worked as an illustrator for many publishers. I think he spoke for many RI Members in saying ‘I love watercolour, it has a wonderful life of its own, everyday something new happens’. Bill passed away suddenly on 30 December 2016. He leaves his wife Elizabeth, two children Oliver and Lucy and two grandchildren. We will all remember him, not only for his paintings and his personal involvement and enthusiasm for the RI, but also for his warm and gentle character.

Past Presidents of the RI
History of the RI
New Society of Painters in Water Colours founded 1831 Joseph Powell 1832–1833
The beginnings of the RI can be traced back to the formation of the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ in 1807. Early exhibitors included William Blake, Paul Sandby, David Cox and Joseph Powell. From the start the New Society showed the work of non-members alongside that of members, a policy still followed today. Sadly the society suffered from financial problems which caused it to close in 1812.
Founding Members Thomas Maisey Henry Warren
1833–1834 1839–1873
The Society became the Institute of Painters in Water Colours 1863 Louis Haghe 1873–1884 In 1883 the prefix Royal was granted by Queen Victoria Sir James D Linton 1884–1898 Edward John Gregory RA 1898–1909 Sir James D Linton 1909–1916 Sir David Murray RA 1916–1933 Terrick Williams RA 1933–1936 Norman Wilkinson CBE 1936–1963 Rowland Hilder OBE 1963–1973 Aubrey Sykes 1973–1979 Charles Bone 1979–1989 Ronald Maddox 1989–2014 Andy Wood 2014–2016 Rosa Sepple 2017–present
Nineteen years later, in 1831, Joseph Powell with several likeminded artists resurrected the New Society of Painters in Water Colours. The next few years were stormy ones with considerable internal disputes and policy changes. Even so the Society thrived and its growing strength during the mid 19th century shows it at the forefront of the movement to get recognition for watercolour painting and the acceptance of it as a serious medium for art. The RI exhibited in various galleries in Old Bond Street, The Strand and Pall Mall until 1883 when, having become the Institute of Painters in Water Colours, they moved into their new gallery in Piccadilly opposite the RA in Burlington House. In 1883, by command of Queen Victoria, the Institute added the prefix ‘Royal’ to its name. The RI continued in its Piccadilly home throughout the Boer War, WWI and WWII with a great many members joining up to fight or work as war artists both at home and on the front line. Prominent war artist members of the RI include Elizabeth Thompson (Lady Butler), Sir George Clausen and Sir William Orpen. During WWI Norman Wilkinson, a naval officer who eventually became the RI’s 10th President, developed ‘Dazzle Camouflage’ a novel system that influenced many 20th century artists. In the post-war years the galleries in Piccadilly were becoming more and more impractical so when the lease ran out in 1970 the RI joined several other leading art societies in the Federation of British Artists based at Mall Galleries which were opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1971. The galleries which have recently been extensively renovated and modernised remain the RI’s home today. 9
