President’s Foreword Greetings and a warm welcome to this 127th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. What a delight it is to be involved with so many talented artists and seeing the work presented by non-members for the selection committee is a pleasure that seems to grow year by year; both in the number of works submitted and the quality of that work. The ROI was founded in 1882, like many of our Art institutions as a way of resisting the perceived stranglehold of the Royal Academy. In many ways this purpose is still relevant, The RA has moved away from figurative painting of late and many of us don’t believe it is currently worth getting out of our un-made beds to enter! There is a consistency in the values of the ROI, the pursuit of excellence in oils, but in the widest range of expressive styles; from the loud to the softly spoken, all get a hearing and are heard at the ROI. You will find something for all tastes and budgets, from abstract to photo-realism. You may buy with confidence in the knowledge that work selected for our show has been selected by a panel of some of the most experienced artists working today. Jacob Rees-Mogg is a politician who knows how to put a sentence together in a similar way that we as painters might put a picture together. Jacob is doing his bit to preserve the English Language (in this age of text and jargon) just as we try to uphold the value of draughtsmanship and the craft of oil painting. It is a real pleasure to welcome Jacob who has agreed to formally open our Annual Exhibition. We hope you enjoy the Exhibition and if you feel you would like to get a bit closer and perhaps involved with our activities then why not join the ROI Friends, open to all who have a love of the Oil Painting medium. May I take this opportunity to thank our sponsors DAS Insurance for their continued and generous support and the many people who do so much to enable us to share our work with you. A Merry Christmas to you all.

Ian Cryer PROI
