President’s Foreword A very warm welcome to the 124th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. The ROI has a proud and independent tradition of providing a vehicle for working artists to gather and exhibit their work directly to the public, without the need for state patronage or the temptation to submit to the whims of a few big money collectors and dealers. We are therefore still being true to one of the tenets envisaged by our founding fathers back in 1882. The standard and quantity of work submitted this year is testament to our continued progress and we hope you enjoy the results of our efforts. Paintings on show from non-members have successfully made it through our gruelling selection process which ensures any work of art purchased during the show comes with that extra guarantee of quality. Indeed we expose our own work to that same process in order to keep our membership on their toes. Our guest opener this year is the Cartoonist Michael Heath. Cartoonists have a great power to expose and lampoon society and capture a particular moment in politics and social fashion just as we painters might capture a moment through mood and light. We are most grateful to Michael for vacating his drawing board for an afternoon to join us. We have a number of events during the Exhibition and members are often on hand so do come and say hello. Our aim is to share our enthusiasm and to demonstrate the marvellous qualities of this most durable and versatile of painting mediums.
Become a Friend of the ROI The Royal Institute of Oil Painters welcomes your support and invites you to join us as a Friend of the ROI. The Friends of the ROI programme will offer you the opportunity to keep up-to-date with the Institute via newsletters, painting days and ROI Masterclasses held around the country.
