The ROI Annual Exhibition 2022 will be my last as President of the Institute. It would be misleading to suggest that my tenure has been trouble free. The last 5 years has thrown up extraordinary challenges that have tested us all in ways that we couldn’t have possibly foreseen. From new data protection regulations and a pandemic to the economic fallout of our exit from the EU and huge geo-political instability; we have had to face these tests with resolve, unity and no small measure of humour.
In spite of it all, the ROI has evolved. I am extremely proud that we are more inclusive than ever before. We increasingly receive submissions from and exhibit work by artists under 30 years old and from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This is thanks to the tireless work by the ROI Council and the staff at the Mall Galleries. I can honestly say that without them the ROI wouldn’t be what it is today. There is, however, still so much more that remains to be done. I cannot think of a time when passing the baton to the next President has carried so much responsibility; they will assume the vital task of building the Institute over the next 5 years in a world facing so many uncertainties. With that responsibility comes a huge opportunity to further progress the ROI and to uphold its reputation as the home of British oil painting.
2022 has brought some devastating losses. We have been deeply saddened by the deaths of Neville Fleetwood ROI, Derek Daniells AROI, Brian Bennett FROI and Ken Howard FROI RA OBE. Each of these wonderful painters’ passing leaves a great
void in the ROI and the wider art world. I can only hope that the next generation of Members can provide such a steadfast source of inspiration to so many.
The mini theme for the 2022 show is ‘Changing Times’. It is undeniable that we are all living in a world that is in a state of transition; therefore it is fitting that this is reflected in our Exhibition. As in previous years, I welcome a varied interpretation of the theme that will, I’m sure, produce a diverse and personal set of paintings.
This year a record number of artists submitted to the open call and choosing the works to exhibit has been exceptionally hard. I am proud to be ending my Presidency with what I consider our finest show yet. It has been an honour to lead the Institute over the last 5 years and I would like to thank the ROI Council, Officers and Mall Galleries staff who have made my job such a pleasure.

Come and take part in the Royal Institute of Oil Painters annual Paint Live competition, a friendly and engaging event where you will have the day to create a painting within a half mile of Mall Galleries. The area includes some of London’s most iconic places: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, Leicester Square, Westminster Abbey, St James’s Park and Piccadilly Circus, as well as many smaller streets, squares, parks and views of the Thames.
