President’s Foreword
Become a Friend of the ROI The Royal Institute of Oil Painters welcomes your support and invites you to join as a Friend of the ROI. The Friends of the ROI programme offers you the opportunity to keep up-to-date with the Institute via newsletters, painting days and ROI Masterclasses held around the country. As a Friend you will be supporting the ROI in its remit to encourage and promote the oil medium within the field of contemporary art.
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 126th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. As the new President of the Institute I am honoured and excited to be charged with overseeing its evolution for the next five years.
For your subscription: • You will receive the ROI Newsletter • The chance to participate in regional workshops at a reduced rate • Priority booking on all workshops • Reduced rates for regional Masterclass sessions • A chance to meet and work with Members of the ROI • Visits to Members’ studios • Free admission and catalogue to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition
Whilst upholding our tradition of excellence in oil painting, one of my main aims is to increase diversity within our ranks and indeed of the work that is shown at our Annual Exhibition. I believe that this starts at grassroots level; so we are collaborating with schools in North London and eventually beyond to engage children with oil painting, encouraging the next generation to see the ROI as an open and progressive organisation where they feel that they belong.
Friends of the ROI Enrolment Form
This year we have a show within a show on the theme of ‘Community Spirit’. Members have put forward work that highlights cohesion and togetherness, a perfect foil for the times of uncertainty and division in which we are currently living.
Please enrol me as a Friend of the ROI. I enclose my subscription of £30 (Cheques should be made payable to ROI Ltd)
We have a number of exciting events planned during the exhibition, details of these can be found elsewhere in the catalogue. ROI Members will also be on hand throughout the exhibition to answer any questions that you may have about the work on show.

In Memoriam Gladys Maccabe MBE Hon Sen ROI (1918-2018)
Gladys died on 22 February 2018, three months short of her 100th birthday.
Michael Noakes PPROI RP (1933-2018)
at Windsor, and in the possession of the Prince of Wales, the House of Commons and the British Museum.
Richard Price ROI (1962-2018)
At the Fair (c. 1995) Gladys Maccabe was born in Randalstown, County Antrim, on the 5 June 1918. While she was a pupil at Brookvale Collegiate School in Belfast she had a drawing published by the Royal Drawing Society, and then went on to study drawing, painting and fashion at Belfast School of Art. Much of Gladys’ work is concerned with the depiction of gatherings of people, whether at a race meeting, a fair or market, on the beach or in a shop. Speaking about how she was inspired by people, she once said, “When I see a crowd I get a sense of excitement together with a feeling of compassion”. In 1961 Gladys was elected a Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the arts in 2000. Like her husband, Max, she was an Honorary Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Low Tide, Poole (c. 2016)
Self-portrait, but economising over the frame (1995) It is with much sadness that we record the death of Past President and Fellow of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Michael Noakes. Elected to membership of the ROI in 1964, Michael became President in 1972, a position he held until 1978. He died in May, aged 84. Noakes, who was educated at Downside and the Royal Academy Schools, was one of Britain’s leading portrait artists, with a hugely distinguished list of sitters – from Margaret Thatcher to Bill Clinton. He painted the Queen’s portrait a number of times, and spent over 20 hours alone with her in the course of sittings. His work is in many public collections, in the National Portrait Gallery, in the Royal Collection
We are sorry to announce that Richard passed away on 15 October. He was a wonderfully talented painter, whose works were concerned with light and atmosphere, capturing well the constantly moving drama of the environment. Richard’s local beaches and seascapes revealed a deftness of drawing and an enthusiasm for sunlight on figures, clouds and wet sand. Luminous translucent windbreaks and windsurfers’ kites became his signature. In 2005 he won The Charles Pears Award for the best painting by a non-member at that year’s Annual Exhibition by the Royal Society of Marine Artists. With the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Richard won the Winsor & Newton Nonmember Award in 2008, became an Associate Member in 2009, following which he was elected to full membership in 2011.
