President’s Foreword

Events and Demonstrations Free with exhibition admission: Thursday 28 November, 2pm to 4pm Roger Dellar ROI PS RI will be demonstrating his painting techniques Friday 29 November, 1:30pm Peter Graham ROI leads a tour of the exhibition

2019 has been a busy year; we are continuing to run workshops in schools in low income areas to bring painting to children who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to experience it. I firmly believe that diversity is key to the future success of the ROI and it is my hope that some of these children might become our future Members. In the meantime our membership continues to diversify and I think that this is reflected in the work on show in this year’s exhibition. Building on the success of last year’s ‘Community Spirit’ themed mini exhibition we have decided to expand the idea of the show within a show. This year’s theme is ‘London’. Both Members and non-members were invited to submit one work for this mini exhibition. London is the home of the ROI and we feel that there is so much scope for a varied pictorial interpretation of this great city. In addition to the range of prizes that we offer each year we have a number of new prizes on offer this year including: Tony Merrick Memorial Prize – A £250 award in memory of Tony Merrick ROI. For members and non-members. Small Painting Prize – A £250 award. For members and non-members. Emerging Artist Prize – A £250 award and the opportunity to spend a day with one of the ROI members. For non-member artists aged 30 or under. As ever we will be running a series of events during the exhibition; these include painting demonstrations from ROI Members, a tour of the exhibition by Peter Graham ROI, our annual Art Event Evening and the ROI Paint Live Challenge. I am also pleased to say that Winsor & Newton will once again be running a Discover Oil Colour event. Further details of all our events, many of which are free with exhibition admission, can be found opposite. I very much hope that you enjoy the exhibition. Tim Benson PROI NEAC RP President

Night Studio Reflections

We are saddened to announce the death of Tony Merrick ROI. Elected to full membership of the ROI in 2013, Tony was a much-loved Member and an integral part of the fabric of the Institute. His loosely rendered figurative painting celebrated the very best of the traditions of artists such as Alfred Sisley and Bernard Dunstan whilst delivering their own individual nuances that belonged only to Tony.

It is with much sadness that we record the death of Ronald Morgan ROI RBA. Ronald was a Senior Member of the ROI. A charming and humble man, he was an ever-present face at Council meetings and ROI events.

Tony’s work was much sought after and it can be found in the collections and estates of Nina Simone and Sam Mendes to name just a couple.

A dedicated artist, Ronald painted every day and his trademark landscapes graced the walls of galleries and collections internationally. He didn’t, however, limit himself to painting landscapes; he was equally at home elegantly interpreting football, tennis and snooker matches.

He is deeply missed.

The ROI is diminished without him.
