President’s Foreword Welcome to the 70th Annual Exhibition staged by the Royal Society of Marine Artists. This is a showcase for the best in contemporary marine artwork, whether that is painting, drawing, print-making or sculpture, and as such the exhibition celebrates a diversity of approach as well as subject matter. Here you will find almost photographic realism alongside the semi-abstract; the soft, muted tones of watercolour alongside the boldness of an oil painting. Here too you will find ocean-going vessels alongside dinghies and day-boats; busy commercial harbours alongside sandy beaches; what lies under the sea alongside the coasts that withstand the full force of the ocean. In short, something to appeal to everyone. I hope you will find works that speak to you on a personal level; that remind you of happy times spent beside the sea, or on it; works that speak to you of the beauty to be found in the seemingly ordinary; works that capture a fleeting moment, seen and not forgotten. Do please talk to a member of the gallery staff if you would like to purchase a work – they will be very pleased to help you. And while on the subject of the helpful staff, I would like to express my thanks to everyone at Mall Galleries for their ongoing help throughout the year. This exhibition, many months in the planning, would not take place without their hard work, expertise and cheerful willingness. I must also thank my fellow officers and members of the RSMA, both for constantly producing wonderful works of art, and for their help in promoting the aims of the Society. Special mention must be made of all those non-member artists who have successfully submitted to the show this year. I very much hope that we will continue to see their work in the years to come and that, in time, they become the members who take our Society forward into an exciting future. And of course, I thank you for coming: I hope you have enjoyed the works on show as much as we, the members, have enjoyed putting the exhibition together. Elizabeth Smith President, The Royal Society of Marine Artists

Interested in Marine Art? If you have enjoyed the work in this exhibition we invite you to join us as a Friends of the RSMA. The very modest annual subscription of £22 brings you the following benefits: • Free ticket to the Friends’ Evening. This enjoyable occasion, with live music, wine and canapes, is held on the evening before the Private View and gives Friends the opportunity to meet and chat with the artists in a relaxed atmosphere. It is also, of course, the first opportunity to view and purchase a painting. • Free Prize Draw. Available exclusively to Friends, the Draw offers two prizes, value £250, each against the purchase of a painting at the RSMA Annual Exhibition. • Free admission and free catalogue to the Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries, and to any other RSMA exhibition throughout the year. • Free invitations for you and your guests to the Private View. • Significant discounts on the cost of RSMA talks and workshops. • The Society’s newsletter, bringing information about the artists, their work and their travels, and details of all exhibitions. You have no obligations or duties.

How to Commission Art put down on a work of art by a chosen artist and the balance is paid on acceptance of the work. The beauty in a commission is that a conversation is had between client and artist, ideas are thrown around and a seed is sown. Depending on the artist, you might commission someone’s next work based on a painting of theirs you like or a direction they are moving in. The most touching commissions are often those in which the client shares something of their own life which becomes a reference point for an artwork. In the case of visitors to the RSMA Annual Exhibition this may be a coastal landscape or wildlife with particular significance, a family boat, a yachting race or historic maritime event.

Geoff Hunt PPRSMA Sea Cloud (detail)

There are two ways to buy artwork. One is to do what you may be doing now: falling in love with that painting in the Main Gallery or that sculpture in the Threadneedle Space and taking it home. The other is something you may not have thought of or not know how to go about doing. It involves being there right at the conception of an artwork by commissioning an artist. Commissioning an artwork is easier than most people think. The practicalities are managed by Mall Galleries’ art consultants who are able to advise which artists might be the best fit for your interests, whether a specific artist takes commissions and to make sure all parties are comfortable before going ahead. A deposit is then

We also work with businesses commissioning works around maritime themes for offices and other workplaces. Our commissions have ended up not just in people’s homes, boats and board rooms but in museums in the UK and abroad. Whatever shape the artwork takes and wherever the final destination, the result is a highly personal experience, a chance to talk to the artist and to bring a new artwork into existence. Commission Conversations Join us on 21 October, 6pm to 7pm, for our Storytelling Event to hear stories and anecdotes about maritime commissions from artists Geoff Hunt PPRSMA, Jeff Stultiens RP and Dolores de Sade. Tickets £5, Free to RSMA Friends and Friends of Mall Galleries. Book at 020 7930 6844 29

It is with sadness we record the death of Keith Shackleton PPRSMA, President of the RSMA from 1974-78. He was elected to membership in 1962, becoming a life member in 2007 when he felt unable to continue his active contribution to the society. In 2012 he was awarded the MBE for services to conservation. He died in April, aged 92. 31
