President’s Foreword
It’s the 78th year of another glorious celebration of marine art. Marine art has been a significant visual element in these islands in past centuries. And now we are once again surrounded by the contemporary interpretation of the sea, shores and ships.
As a nation there seems to be a national instinct that draws its people to the sea and of course our artists are never far from the sea. The tradition of marine painting includes many of the greatest names in British art. May we think that amongst the artists represented here some may in the future be listed historically as nationally important?
Many of you will have already visited this exhibition online. I hope in reality the work you see here today lives up to your expectations. Seeing the work early online gives previous buyers and collectors a chance to snap up the gems of artists whose work they already own. But it also gives online visitors a preview of the scope of the exhibition and encourages them to see the works live.
The RSMA at present has over 60 member artists. As you will see there are some new candidates for Associate Membership. We wish them of course success in the upcoming election. New members are elected having had their work accepted in previous RSMA exhibitions, but most importantly showing continued skill and excellence.
Many of our artists have their work displayed on walls throughout the world. The RSMA has connections with commercial enterprises and shipping organisations in the UK. In the past the society has had a strong association with the Royal Navy. This link has been recently rekindled. The building of a new City Class frigate HMS Glasgow by BAE Systems is being recorded for posterity. We hope that further connections with the Royal Navy will develop in the future.
Finally, I am sure that it’s no surprise to find out how much planning and effort goes into the presentation of this exhibition. This year being no exception, in some instances artists start preparing work almost as soon as the previous annual exhibition has ended. RSMA members and Mall Galleries staff get together early to ensure that the exhibition is a success. We are always trying to refine the future marketing and PR possibilities for the next show. But now it’s all done and so it’s my pleasant task to thank our selection and hanging committees for their enthusiasm and dedication. It’s no small effort to carefully select from some 1,750 works entered by non-member artists. Then quickly comes the day when all the work has to be arranged around the galleries for hanging. All is now ready for the superb Mall Galleries team to perform their miraculous efforts in getting our work on the walls in the shortest time. All that is once again successfully confirmed in the exhibition this year. With many, many thanks from the RSMA council to all concerned.
President, Royal Society of Marine Artists

John Stillman RSMA Grey Day, Cowes, Isle of Wight Oil 41 x 51 cm
Kayla Martell Hey Sailor 49 x 39 cm
Born in 1990, Kayla lives and paints in the beautiful countryside of Wicklow, Ireland. She loves bringing to life the spirit and beauty of every day things on the canvas and each painting is a little conversation between her and those special characters. Kayla’s paintings focus on maintaining dynamic and expressive brushwork.
Kayla’s paintings are regularly shown in exhibitions including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), Society of Women Artists (SWA), Dublin Painting & Sketching Club (DPSC), Society of Graphic Fine Art (SGFA), and others.
“All the shortlisted candidates for the Baltic Exchange Award were exceptional. As Chair of the Baltic Exchange Council, I was impressed by the diverse and high-quality entries spanning various aspects of shipping. After tough deliberation, I chose ‘Sundown from Harwich Quay’ by Jenny Aitken. The artwork beautifully captures the sun’s descent while symbolizing the 24/7 essence of global shipping. It serves as a poignant reminder that those observing from the quay often remain unaware of the profound reliance their lives have on the ceaseless activities of the international shipping industry and the dedicated professionals who sustain it.”

Lord Jeffrey Mountevans
Winner of the Baltic Exchange Award 2023
Winner of the RSMA New Generation Award 2023
Winner of The Charles Pears Award 2023
Winner of the BAE Systems Award 2023
For an outstanding work by a non-member presented in memory of Charles Pears, founding member and first President.
“When presented with such a superb collection of paintings, where each has great appeal for very different reasons, the task of selecting the winner is hard. 'The Shipwright', by Richard Dack, is our selection this year. A fine picture, the composition of frames inside the hull drawing the eye to the solitary worker, dressed in orange in a dark enclosed space, lit from above, works very well. But what really took this painting to the next level are the feelings it evokes in me; of the ship as a structure of natural form that cradles and keeps safe its crew; of the heroism of the graft and grit often involved in ship building and the frequently solitary nature of the work, as difficult but vital tasks are completed, often alone and in challenging places. While our congratulations go to all the finalists, our deep pleasure in offering this prize to Richard reflects the way his painting connected with this observer powerfully and personally. Thank you for the privilege of viewing this exceptional work.”

The RSMA features works by non-members – inspired by the sea
Once again, we are delighted by the overall quality of work submitted by non-members. The selection process as always requires concentrated effort by members of our selection committee.
We always realise that our judgements will bring forth both joy, but also disappointment. Decisions on the work entered are not taken lightly.
This year we have viewed work from both national and international artists, confirming that the sea and ships is a continued source of influence for them.
The works shown here are representative of the over one-third of those selected by non-members for this year’s exhibition.

Ultra Low Emission Sail Cargo and Travel
Discover a range of companies and initiatives from the inspiring world of sail cargo and travel. These ships are a link between thousands of years of history and the innovative solutions of today. They are a renaissance in responsible maritime trade: sourcing goods that cannot be produced locally, and delivering them on sailing ships, emission-free. Some ships are engineless, with solar for electricity; some are traditional, some modern. Travel is offered too. Read about a sustainable culture of trade and transport, and the visionary sailors involved.
On average, 75% of the emissions of a business are in its supply chain. Take longlife foods such as cocoa, coffee, olives and wine: sail cargo provides the missing link - an environmentally sustainable onward journey. When necessary, smaller sailing ships look after the last leg of a voyage, and distribute the goods up and down local coasts. There is no queuing outside ports or access points (e.g. Suez, Panama) and no waiting to re-fuel. Smaller ports are often chosen in proportion to the cargo. Sail cargo rejuvenates these, and invests in local communities and infrastructure. And shipbuilding provides
local, long-term employment. Right now, coastal communities are being transformed. The human connection on arrival, plus land distribution, are just as important as the voyage. Inspirational travel options include being a passenger or ‘trainee crew’.
Who runs these agile companies? Many professional sailors leave the merchant navy to found and join them, and there is a rich range of professional backgrounds. The businesses have clear visions for clean shipping and a healthy and transparent transport culture. Producers get the biggest share of what the customer pays. Money circulates within an ethical, green market that grows exponentially and attracts new entrants. Sail cargo is helpful to start-ups and small producers, who are free to trade globally and responsibly.
Sail cargo also shines a path for the global merchant fleet as it moves towards full decarbonisation, in line with the International Maritime Organisation's revised Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy (July 2023). Sailors talk to each other and share inspiration. Find yours in these companies!
Welcome! Explore these extraordinary companies! Explore the companies; buy and ship ethical goods; book a voyage. Click on the logos; buy and ship ethical goods; book a voyage.
