ROYAL SOCIETY OF MARINE ARTISTS Annual Exhibition 2014
SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ART
The Threadneedle Prize 2014 The Threadneedle Foundation is pleased to support Mall Galleries and The Threadneedle Prize, a leading competition for figurative and representational painting and sculpture. Since its establishment in 2008 The Threadneedle Prize has become recognised as one of the country’s major art prizes and a vibrant and engaging forum for creative talent. As well as supporting new techniques that stretch the potential of young, emerging and established artists, it provides an exciting and varied exhibition for everyone to see.

President’s Foreword This year our Society celebrates its 75th anniversary. Many things have changed since 1939 and those changes can be seen within the RSMA just as much as in society at large. It is certainly true that very few of our members now have direct experience of the deep sea, unless perhaps it is on a cruise ship, and, whilst women members have always been welcomed, it is only now that one has had the privilege of being elected to take over the helm of the RSMA. It is no doubt also true that the range of subject matter seen at our annual exhibition has gradually changed over the years, reflecting different interests and experiences. However, I’m confident that what has remained constant throughout the 75 years is the quality of the work we exhibit. Members can always be relied upon to put their very best work on the walls at Mall Galleries, but this year I would also like to draw attention to the work of the non-member exhibitors. We had a record entry from non-members and it was difficult making our selection from the many high quality submissions. We sincerely hope that many of these non-member exhibitors will be elected to membership in the future. A huge amount of work goes into running a successful Society and mounting an annual exhibition of this size and quality. I would like to thank my fellow officers, council and committee members and indeed all our members for their continued support, and all the staff at Mall Galleries who do such a superb job and without whom this exhibition would not be possible. Thanks must also be expressed to our generous prize sponsors. And of course I thank you for coming to see the results of our labours and purchasing some of the exhibits: I do hope they give you many years of pleasure. Elizabeth Smith President, The Royal Society of Marine Artists
