Royal Society of Marine Artists 2016
President’s Foreword Welcome to this very special exhibition. This year the Royal Society of Marine Artists celebrate 50 years of Royal status by mounting our largest-ever exhibition, occupying all three gallery spaces here at Mall Galleries. Putting together such a large exhibition has enabled us to show more work from many of your favourite marine artists - our Members and Associates whose stunning work draws you here each year. But we have also been able to extend the number and range of exhibits from non-members – artists who are, perhaps, less familiar to you but who none-the-less demonstrate remarkable capabilities. A number of these artists will no doubt go on to be elected Members in the years to come, and we look forward to their continued contribution. I do hope that many of the works will appeal to you as much as they do to us; that they will make you say – yes, they’ve captured perfectly something of the essence of that scene - be that the light or the mood, the colour or the shapes, the movement, energy or excitement, the tranquillity, quietness or stillness. Our inspiration is the sea and marine environment, in its infinite variety, and this selection of work attempts to demonstrate just how endlessly fascinating that is. If any of the works capture your imagination, do please talk to the gallery staff – they will happily help should you wish to make a purchase. I cannot let this opportunity pass without expressing my thanks, personally and on behalf of the Society, to a number of people. Everyone at Mall Galleries is vital to the success of our exhibitions, and their on-going support throughout the year, together with their expert advice, is of tremendous value. My fellow Members and Officers can always be relied upon to play their part in producing a good show and, once again, I would like to commend the non-member exhibitors for their contribution. With everyone pulling together in this way I sincerely hope the result is a fresh and lively show. I can say with authority that it is the largest exhibition we’ve ever mounted; I leave you to judge whether it is also our best. Elizabeth Smith President, The Royal Society of Marine Artists

Royal Society of Marine Artists 2016
The RSMA 35 or Under Award Winner: Natalia Avdeeva where the borders of Russia, China, Kazakhstan and Mongolia meet. The boundless skies, mountains and glacial lakes of the region’s natural environment provided an inspirational backdrop for the young artist’s childhood, where her first job was picking herbs in the mountain passes for the local shaman. This natural influence is clearly evident in her work today and she describes her sense of being “in dialogue with the natural world, with the air, the sky.” The daughter of an artist father and an architect mother, Avdeeva has always had a hunger to express herself and trained as a painter at the Barnaul School of Fine Art in Siberia, Russia. The prize-winning artist, now based in London, is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. She says she “is driven by colour, light and contrast.” As part of her dialogue with nature she works in the tradition of plein air, painting small canvases from which much larger images are created in the studio. She has painted in this way for many years depicting the landscape of her native Russia but also Italy and the English coast, especially Cornwall where she captures its rugged beauty.
Natalia Avdeeva Warm Sands Monoprint/acrylic, 83 x 83 cm £1,200
Natalia Avdeeva’s Warm Sands is a ‘piece unique’, based on a plein air oil study of Gwithian Beach on the North Cornish Coast. It is deceptively simple – the blue of the sky contrasting with a sandy beach and a hint of green landscape on the horizon; but it is the clouds that dominate. These are hazy, somewhat imprecise, yet delineated with a certain power that almost overwhelms with their immensity. It has been created using an innovative technique that combines painting with printmaking technology. Painting vast skies seems to come instinctively to Avdeeva who was born and grew up in the Altai region of Russia, in Southern Siberia
Her paintings are created on a large format vacuum bed. Painting directly onto silk screen, it is a fast-paced, freestyle process, which at first glance appears to be frantic and chaotic, belying the reality that each painting is the result of meticulous preparation. Avdeeva selects an image from a pile of small studies and paintings, or sometimes works from memory. A colour palette is prepared and much time is taken mixing the acrylic paints – in the same way as she would mix oils outside, en plein air – until the desired shades are achieved. The paint is quickly but precisely applied directly on to the screen with small pieces of card and plastic palette knives, each of which is scrupulously selected. There is an extremely short window of time to get the paint applied and the image made before it dries. The process is finalised by ‘squeegeeing’ the paint through the screen and the results revealed on a large piece of white paper; in this way, the paintings are exposed, only in the final seconds, through printing technology. The innovative method produces unique pieces in an adrenaline-fuelled 15-20 minute period, where Avdeeva taps into the emotion of the painting experience and captures the moment.

Commissions of the Year Summer has given way to Autumn but you need not forget the holidays just yet. One of our most popular commission themes last year was the beach. Sandy bays in Cornwall, fishing off the end of piers, the kids building sandcastles; you were looking to catch those fleeting holiday moments that pass all too quickly.
Duncan Palmar Bantham Beach
One of the most interesting things about commissioning is that it gets personal. Commissioners are often drawn to an artist’s work because of the way they depict a region they know and love. They feel an affinity with the artist who sees the landscape the way they do.
Commissioning allows the art lover to engage with the artist from the beginning, to discuss and to share their own stories. Some clients have asked an artist to paint a specific place special to them, sending their chosen painter on a journey to a new place. But often people are interested in seeing their family in the picture frame. One of our favourite commissions to have come out of last year’s RSMA exhibition was a painting by non-member Duncan Palmar who had submitted a hugely popular painting of Bantham Beach in Cornwall. The painting had sold quickly and he was subsequently commissioned by a client who knew the beach well from holidays windsurfing there, to revisit this subject. As the conversation evolved and ideas were thrown around between the artist and the client, Sebastian Seal, the painting, shown above, was developed to include Sebastian’s family on the beach and himself windsurfing in the distance. Sebastian said: “Commissioning was a great experience for us, from the anticipation in waiting for the painting to be finished, the lovely surprise at the final result and the personal touch when we met Duncan and discussed how our ideas were introduced into his own work.” Our art consultant Anna Bromwich will be on hand throughout the exhibition to discuss the commissioning process and to help you find an artist. Find her in the North Gallery during the exhibition, where you can browse portfolios. Email: annabromwich@mallgalleries.com Tel: 020 7930 6844 www.mallgalleries.org.uk 36
